  • Tobacco Policies at Colleges and Universities Housing PreK – 12
           Laboratory Schools: An Exploratory Study

    • Authors: Sarah Prudhomme et al.
Abstract: Objective. This study examined the current status of tobacco-/smoke-free campus policies at PreK - 12 laboratory schools and their affiliated colleges/universities. Perceived barriers to passage of tobacco-/smoke-free policies and aspects of the school environment perceived to aid in passage of such polices were also examined. Methods. Data were collected through electronic surveys to administrators of 61 U.S. International Association of Laboratory School members and their affiliated colleges/universities. Information on state tobacco policies was obtained from the National Association of State Board of Education’s State School Healthy Policy Database on tobacco use. Results. Inconsistencies between college/university tobacco-/smoke-free policies and state board of education guidelines existed. Faculty/staff issues, social issues, and internal policy implementation challenges emerged as the top categories of barriers. Laws and policies, support from key stakeholders, and communication strategies were the strongest aids. Conclusions. There is not a consistent standard of protection offered for PreK - 12 students across the country. Colleges/universities housing laboratory schools may be placing their PreK - 12 students at greater risk of exposure to pro-tobacco influences and secondhand smoke if they are not governed by comprehensive tobacco policies.

  • Student and Teacher Attitudes Toward Giftedness in a Two Laboratory School
Environment: A Case for Conducting a Needs Assessment

    • Authors: Jennifer Riedl Cross et al.
Abstract: Providing effective professional development in laboratory schools around topics that can be divisive, such as preparing a school environment for expansion of gifted education services, can be quite difficult. However, doing so based on data collected through a needs assessment can be invaluable to the planning process. As part of a needs assessment in preparation to enroll 100 new gifted students, students and teachers (N=171) from a unique setting in which a residential school for gifted high school students is housed within a laboratory school were surveyed using F. Gagné and L. Nadeau’s (1991) Opinions about the Gifted and Their Education instrument. Clustering participants based on their responses identified 3 distinct clusters showing varied support for gifted education. Most laboratory school students and teachers opposed special services for gifted students. A group of supporters, made up of some laboratory school and residential school teachers and approximately a third of residential school students acknowledged the needs and social value of gifted students to some degree and strongly supported gifted education. Most students in the residential school (59%) were conflicted, recognizing the needs of gifted students and the value of giftedness, but showing opposition to gifted education. In addition to its usefulness in designing effective professional development, the needs assessment identified attitudes that have implications for the larger gifted education community.

  • Lessons Learned: Building a Better Laboratory School

    • Authors: Amanda S. Wilcox-Herzog et al.
Abstract: Laboratory schools serve an important function in the education and training of early educators as well as important sites for the development of new knowledge related to best practices in early care and education. To this end, it is important to determine how to promote and preserve Laboratory Schools in the United States. The following paper utilizes existing literature and field data to identify essential components of successful Laboratory schools and provides a case study of a relatively new Laboratory school serving infants and toddlers; both its successes and struggles.

  • The Effect of Physical and Music Education in the Development of Motor
Skills in Children between Six and Eight Year-Olds in an Inclusive
           Environment

    • Authors: José E. Betancourt et al.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the effect of the integration of music education and physical education programs on the development of locomotor skills in students who are between six and eight years old. Various activities were developed and implemented to assure the best quality of teaching in both academic subjects using 28 children –13 girls and 15 boys. Fourteen children were in an experimental group and followed the integrated class of physical and music education for two months. The rest served as the control group and followed the physical education program, separate from musical education, for the same time period. Six of the fourteen students of the experimental group (42.9%) participate in the special education program. Fifty percent (3 of 6) of these participants have an ADHD diagnostic. Two students in the control group (14.3%) are also inscribed in special education but lack an ADHD diagnostic. Children’s level in locomotor skills such as walking-running, sliding, skipping and jumping were assessed with a rubric developed by both music education and physical education teachers. The results of this study showed an increase in the post-arithmetic means of both groups (control and experimental) in the skills previously mentioned. Furthermore, there were statistically significant findings in the post-arithmetic means of the experimental group when compared to the scores obtained during the motor skills pretest. Finally, when comparing the control group pretest and posttest scores, there was no statistically significant increase. These outcomes could be regarded as an effect of the treatment to which the participants of the experimental group were subjected.

  • The Practice of Olympic Wrestling as a Mechanism of Behavior Modification
in Elementary School Special Education Students.

    • Authors: José E. Betancourt
Abstract: The purpose of this study was the investigation of the effect of the practice of Olympic wrestling on the modification of the behavior of sixteen elementary school special education students between the ages of eight and twelve years old. Ninety two percent of this group was enrolled in a special education program of which eighty six percent were classified with ADHD. The investigation lasted ten-weeks during which the students were evaluated before and after their participation in the wrestling program. During this period the students participated in Olympic wrestling training sessions, which consisted of many motor skill activities including axial skills, together with other activities such as artistic gymnastics, wrestling techniques, wrestling, and motors skills games. The evaluation instruments were constructed by three teachers: a specialist in special education and in Olympic wrestling, a special education teacher, and a wrestling specialist. The teachers of the students’ regular classes and the wrestling trainer evaluated the students. The results indicated an improvement in the opinion of the students concerning their behavior in the classroom. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the Olympic wrestling teacher and the teachers of the regular program saw an improvement in the behavior of the students. The results were found to be statistically significant.

  • Laboratory School Leaders Provide Support for Literacy

    • Authors: Doyle Brinson et al.
Abstract: Laboratory school leaders can greatly influence reading achievement among students. In this light, the authors propose that school leaders, by becoming more aware of their own journey in becoming readers, are encouraged to strengthen reading programs in their own schools. Consequently, writing a memoir titled “My Life as a Reader” can be used to encourage reflection on becoming a reader. In this study, analysis of the memoirs of school leaders provided substantial evidence supporting the conclusion that experiences with books and interested adults greatly encourages eventual reading achievement. The subjects in this paper are school leaders; however, application of the strategies employed can be applied in a variety of settings such as school faculty meetings, college education classes, and parent involvement sessions.

  • Financially Sustaining University Lab Schools: One University’s
           Story

    • Authors: Gloria J. Gresham Dr.
Abstract: University lab schools connected to teacher preparation programs are based on the clinical teaching model. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education encourage teacher preparation programs to extend the hours required in clinical settings for teacher candidates. For years, some teacher preparation programs have championed the clinical teaching model. The university that was the focus of this study has implemented the clinical teaching model for over 87 years. Sustaining this model was not easy but through perseverance, this university did just that. The intent of this study was to determine the organizational practices implemented at this university that aided in financially sustaining university lab schools over time. Through a case study method, the researchers discovered lab schools were sustained by (a) creatively utilizing state funding and regular teacher candidate tuition to assist with lab schools’ support; (b) instituting childcare tuition to help cover costs; (c) using teacher candidate lab fees and including lab school teachers as university faculty.

  • A Picture Literally Is Worth a Thousand Words! Using Documentation to
           Increase Family Involvement

    • Authors: Eva M. Zygmunt-Fillwalk et al.
Abstract: Research conducted over the past two decades indicates the predictive nature of family involvement in children’s education to child school and life success (Jeynes, 2005). Beyond factors such as socioeconomic status and parental education, the extent to which families are involved in children’s education at home and at school has been shown to have the strongest relationship to student academic success (Henderson & Berla, 1994). This manuscript details a collaborative project between Burris Laboratory School and Ball State University, through which early childhood practicum students created web-based documentation pages to showcase kindergarten student learning. These pages opened the door to the kindergarten classroom, and provided families the opportunity to more fully engage in their children's learning. Additional benefits for children and preservice teachers are fully explored.

  • Why Parents Choose Laboratory Schools for their Children

    • Authors: Paul Erickson et al.
Abstract: Since the 1960s, laboratory schools have been diminishing throughout the United States with less than 100 active today. This reduction is attributed to lack of financial support, and the fact that fewer children are choosing to attend laboratory schools. Why, then, do parents choose to enroll or withdraw their children in laboratory schools' This article focuses on this question, while presenting the strengths and weaknesses of laboratory schools. Strengths of laboratory schools include better preparation for higher education, an understanding of a college atmosphere, higher college acceptance rates, and increased performance on standardized tests. Weaknesses of laboratory schools include high tuition, adjusting to an observed classroom, high teacher turn-over rates, and homogenous environments. This study solicited the opinions of parents, whose children attended a laboratory school in the southeastern part of the United States, concerning their reasons for selecting or leaving laboratory schools. Additionally, implications for educational leaders and administrators of laboratory schools are discussed.
