  • ASp 78, November 2020: Teaching ESP in a major health crisis situation

    • Abstract: Theme Initially, issue 78 of the ASp journal (due out in November 2020) was to be devoted to the theme of language certification in specialised contexts (call available here: ). However, given the major crisis situation currently facing ESP teachers and researchers due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we feel it is wiser to postpone this topic to ASp 79 (due out in spring 2021), and we are issuing a new call for papers for a special issue dedicated to the effects of the health crisis on ESP. The editorial team of the ASp journal would like to preserve the memory of an unprecedented moment in the history of ESP in Europe: the shutdown of most higher education institutions over a relatively long period of time, and the implementation, sometimes in an emergency, of measures allowing the partial or total continuity of teaching and learning through the internet.     • Abstract: Theme As the French higher education system is being called upon by the government to implement large-scale certification tests – a decree issued on July 30, 2018 makes the formal assessment of language competence mandatory at Bachelor’s degree level – we find it useful to reflect upon language certifications in English-speaking specialised contexts. Not only does this issue raise many debates, but many issues remain unsolved. We therefore invite scholars to share their reflections about the following questions: 1.     • Abstract: Thème À l’heure où le système d’enseignement supérieur français est appelé par le gouvernement à mettre en œuvre des certifications linguistiques à plus grande échelle (l’arrêté du 30 juillet 2018 relatif au diplôme national de licence impose ainsi d’associer une forme de certification à ce grade universitaire), il semble utile de lancer une réflexion sur les certifications linguistiques en contexte spécialisé anglophone.     • Abstract: Thème Initialement, le numéro 78 de la revue ASp (parution prévue en novembre 2020) devait être consacré à la thématique des certifications linguistiques. Cependant, compte tenu de la situation de crise majeure qu’affrontent actuellement enseignants et chercheurs du secteur LANSAD en raison de la pandémie provoquée par le virus Covid-19, nous jugeons plus sage de reporter ce thème au numéro 79 (parution prévue au printemps 2021), et nous lançons un nouvel appel à contributions en vue d’un numéro spécial consacré aux effets de la crise sanitaire sur l’enseignement de l’anglais de spécialité.       Abstract: Le présent numéro contient deux articles de recherche. Catherine Resche explore certains néologismes récemment apparus dans le secteur anglophone de la banque et de la finance. Souvent fondés sur des matrices lexicales telles que l’oxymore, l’amalgame ou les mots-valises, ils reflètent l’émergence de positionnements éthiques nouveaux chez les acteurs du domaine, que l’on a pu traiter de « banksters » dans le sillage de la grande crise financière de 2008. Comme dans de nombreux autres secteurs du monde de l’entreprise, les nouvelles préoccupations liées à la responsabilité sociale, citoyenne et environnementale favorisent l’apparition d’une terminologie méliorative, fondée sur des syntagmes nominaux comprenant certains mots-slogans (responsible, sustainable, impact, mission), comme dans mission-driven finance ou ethical funds.       Abstract: This book is a selection of papers given at the 21st LSP Conference (formerly known as the LSP Symposium), held in Bergen, Norway, in 2017. The definition of LSP in this context is by no means restricted to English for special purposes, though many of the studies focusing on other languages take English into account. In their Introduction, the editors start off by sketching out a brief history of how LSP, initially dominated by onomasiologically oriented terminology, has been gradually transformed into studies of specialised discourse. To confirm this trend, they have chosen Kjersti Fløttum’s keynote lecture, with its textual basis and resolutely cross-disciplinary orientation, as the introductory article to the whole book.       Abstract: Foreword This report describes an ESP teaching course in Legal English (LE) taught at the Faculty of Law at the University of Niš, Serbia, as a two-term obligatory course in a Bachelor’s programme or as an elective course at Master’s level. Its main objective is to empower law students with the professional linguistic skills to achieve persuasiveness and critical thinking required in a cross-cultural legal context. Although the report details the different steps of the course as well as assessment procedures, it also mentions the small number of students per class (up to ten students per group), which will make it harder for teachers to develop similar courses especially in current university working conditions. Overall, the use of ethnographic perspectives in applied linguistics studies to describe situated discourse is on the rise (Swales 1998; Lillis & Curry 2010; Starfield 2011; Pérez-Llantada 2012; Dressen-Hammouda 2014; Paltridge, Starfield & Tardy 2016), with researchers seeking to develop an insider’s account of specialized communities in order to better understand the conditions in which the discourse is created and maintained, how it changes over time, and what the implications for social identity construction and group membership are.
