  • The flipped classroom and the use of educational software videos in
           initial teaching education. Qualitative study

    • Authors: Ana Cristina Blasco, Juan Lorenzo, Javier Sarsa
Abstract: In many courses, the way to implement the ‘flipped classroom’ methodology takes recorded video lectures as reference material. In this case, a group of lectures about educational software, recording the computer screen (screencast) has been used, in order to allow students to spend the practice sessions time solving problems with the cited software. The study described below has been done following a qualitative methodology, using participant observation and individual interviews to inquire about the teaching-learning process of the students in four categories: effort/benefit, difficulty, usefulness and satisfaction. These categories have been defined starting from the scientific bibliography review and the observation process. As a result, it has been observed that, in spite of the several distinct patterns found in the way and time exposed to the videos, the majority of students made positive comments about their potential to better solve in-classroom problems. Besides, they noticed improvements in the interaction with students and teachers when they needed to pose questions or doubts. Finally, they manifested that the experience should be applied to every practice session.

  • Teacher training at the University of Barcelona: satisfaction, transfer
           and impact

    • Authors: Teresa Pagés Costas, Rosa Sayós Santigosa, Juan Antonio Amador Campos, Evangelina González Fernández, Lourdes Marzo Ruiz, Mònica Mato Ferré
Abstract: This study analyses the effect that the training programs of the Institute of Education (ICE) of the University of Barcelona (UB) has on the teaching of the trainees who received this training. The satisfaction of the teaching staff about the courses, the level of transfer of the knowledge acquired to their teaching and its impact on the academic performance, motivation and participation of the trainees have been evaluated. Besides, the difficulties in transferring knowledge and skills acquired in the training to the teaching practice have been analysed. The indicators used for the collection and analysis of data are part of the Internal Quality Assurance System (IACS) of the ICE’s training programs. The data show a high satisfaction of the teacher trainees with the training received. They indicate that the programs designed favour the acquisition of teaching competences and provide teachers with a greater capacity to introduce changes in their teaching. These changes affect the improvement of academic performance as well as the participation and motivation of their students. The perception that some organizational aspects of the institution hamper the transference to their teaching is greater in the trainees who have received more training. Moreover, it shows that IACS is a good tool for monitoring and evaluating the training programs, to accredit them, and therefore also to accredit the professional development of teacher trainees.

  • University teacher training in the EHEA: a study at the University of

    • Authors: Vanesa Delgado Benito, Raquel Casado Muñoz, Fernando Lezcano Barbero
Abstract: Changes in the educative paradigm, arising from the transitional process towards the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), call for a new teaching model and a new role for university teaching staff. In this context, institutionalized and systematic teacher education is considered fundamental to face up to new educational challenges with success. Over the last decade, the majority of Spanish universities have sought to carry out teacher education experiences in line with international practice. This article assumes an approach to the study of the application in the classroom of the teacher training at the University of Burgos (Spain), to analyze the perception of teachers and students about this training. A two-stage mixed methodology was used: in the first, the training content related to the “European Higher Education Area” and the “Renewal of teaching methodologies” completed by 606 teachers over the period 2000-2011 was described and analyzed; and, in the second, a qualitative study was conducted with 4 teachers (in-depth interview) and 30 students (focus-group). It was concluded that teacher education is highly valued by teaching staff and a keen interest in the improvements. Likewise, students acknowledged good teaching practice delivered by well trained teachers. Important coincidences are found with regard to what teachers and students identify as positive teaching practice.

  • Transforming a class from the Psychology degree into a flipped

    • Authors: Marta Miragall, Gemma García-Soriano
Abstract: The flipped classroom is a teaching methodology that changes the dynamic of the traditional class, as the students study the lesson before attending class (mainly through Information and Communication Technologies), and the time in class is used to clarify the contents and do meaningful activities with the teacher’s support. Recent studies show that positive results have been obtained using this methodology. However, the implementation of this methodology in the Psychology degree is scarce. The objective of this study was to use the flipped classroom methodology in a lesson on the subject of Psychopathology and compare its effectiveness with that of a traditional class. The sample was composed of 87 students (M = 23.02, SD = 7.88 years old, 73.1% women) majoring in Psychology at the University of Valencia. In the flipped classroom condition (n = 47), the lesson was explained through a video that students watched at home, and then the time in class was used to assess and clarify the lesson (using the Kahoot! platform) and do significant activities in small groups. In the traditional condition (n = 40), the teacher explained the lesson in class, and the contents were assessed and clarified through the Kahoot! platform, but the activities were done at home.  The students assessed the interest, usefulness, and difficulty of the components of each methodology using a Likert scale and two open questions. In addition, the acquired knowledge was assessed through the final exam. No significant differences between conditions were found in the acquired knowledge (assessed through the Kahoot! platform or the final exam). However, working on the meaningful activities in small groups with the teacher’s support decreased the perceived difficulty of these activities, and the students made positive comments about the flipped classroom methodology.

  • An application of the case study in the Zaragoza University Masters’
           Teacher Training

    • Authors: Natalia Larraz
Abstract: This study is based on the implementation and application of the case study method in Higher Education teaching (University Master's in Teacher Training) by the use of case study propitiated by the methodological changes from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This study has been applied in two groups of students of different specialties (Natural Sciences and Experimental Sciences) of the subject of Interaction and coexistence in the classroom, forming a joint sample of 98 students (N = 98). In order to analyze the learning outcomes obtained through the case method and the subject, it has been proved if there is a relation between the acquired learning through the resolution of the case and the overall learning of the subject. The results show the existence of a positive and a moderate significant correlation between both types of learning (p <.001), observing a greater correlation in the specialty of Natural Sciences in comparison with Experimental Sciences. These results show the usefulness of the case study method to improve the teaching-learning process in institutions of higher education and the importance of the use of this methodology by teachers, which could promote the acquisition of transversal competences, such as creativity, critical and metacognitive thinking skills in problem solving. The implications of this work serve to design different types of activities in which the case study method and its impact on learning are applied.

  • Foreign Exchange students and the control of the free-riding problem

    • Authors: Rosella Nicolini, José Luis Roig Sabaté
Abstract: This study discusses a teaching experience that has been taking place at the School of Economics and Business at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since the academic year 2012-2013. We implement a self-evaluation mechanism: students working on group projects are required to deliver a joint declaration in which they asses their individual participation in the accomplishment of the joint task. The importance of this device is twofold. On the one hand, it reduces conflictivity among team members and, on the other hand, it delivers quantitative elements to the lecturer for grading the individual participation to the group report.  The results of our experience provide evidence that foreign students can be a valuable tool to control for the free-riding problem in homework projects performed by teamwork groups.
