  • Portraits d'enseignants de FLS, pédagogues de l'hybride. Vers une
           ébauche de modèle

      Abstract: Cet article porte sur une initiative d'hybridation de cours de langues au sein d'une institution universitaire canadienne. S'appuyant sur une démarche d'ingénierie ergonomique pour mettre en œuvre le processus de conception des cours hybrides, cette initiative a donné lieu à une recherche-action-développement qui a mobilisé un ensemble d'acteurs, dont trois enseignants de FLS que nous avons suivis. À travers les portraits de ces enseignants, nous proposons une analyse des dimensions contextuelles, pédagogiques et de l'idéal professionnel de leurs représentations professionnelles en tant que pédagogues de l'hybride. Ces portraits ont été construits sur la base d'une analyse qualitative d'un questionnaire distribué en amont de l'initiative hybride et d'un entretien semi-guidé mené après celle-ci. Ils ont conduit à l'ébauche d'un modèle à visée formative de la dimension pédagogique de l'enseignement d'une langue en modalité hybride.

  • Telecollaboration: foreign language teachers (re)defining their role

      Abstract: This study uses mixed methodology adapted from Nexus Analysis (Scollon & Wong Scollon, 2004) to analyse the development of in-service and pre-service foreign language teacher identity and their perception of their roles with a potential normalisation of personal digital devices (Bax, 2003) and telecollaboration (O'Dowd, 2009) in the classroom. Diverse institutional, personal, professional and informal discourses were traced to determine a nexus of practice with its constitutive discourses in place, interaction orders and historical bodies. Transgressive, conservative or transformative uses of technology or practices were noted. In an attempt to challenge current visions of possible selves (Kubanyiova, 2009), the teachers were asked to imagine alternative scenarios of technology integration and telecollaboration.   • Les signes expressifs corporels de la conversation par

      Abstract: Nous nous intéressons aux rencontres interculturelles, telles qu'elles adviennent avec l'usage de dispositifs de communication numériques formant un espace double, celui de la classe et celui à distance. Nous prenons pour objet l'usage de la vidéoconférence de groupe à groupe afin d'étudier la façon dont les apprenants d'une classe de français langue étrangère construisent et coordonnent une conversation avec un groupe de locuteurs de la langue-cible. Dans une perspective interactionniste (Goffman, Traverso, Cicurel), nous envisageons la conversation comme un polylogue et une activité à la fois sociale et didactique, et analysons uniquement les interactions non verbales, proxémique et gestuelle, afin de mieux en faire ressortir la dynamique de l'échange. L'étude montre que l'engagement des apprenants dans la conversation fait de la classe de langue un espace d'apprentissage dynamique où l'échange actif est rythmé par la collaboration et la compétition.

  • La télécollaboration vue par la communication exolingue – Pour un

      Abstract: Dans notre article, nous nous proposons de discuter les relations possibles entre les études sur la télécollaboration et les études sur la communication exolingue, le but étant de montrer comment les recherches dans ces deux domaines peuvent s'enrichir mutuellement. Pour ce faire, l'article sera divisé en deux grandes parties : une première où nous dresserons un bref panorama des études dans les deux domaines et montrerons les articulations conceptuelles possibles ; une deuxième partie où nous montrerons certains points d'un tel enrichissement par un exemple concret, tiré d'une étude d'un télétandem.

  • "I'm the first video Voicethread–it's pretty sweet, I'm pumped": Gender
           and Self-Expression on an Interactive Multimodal Platform

      Abstract: This study explores how male and female users of, an interactive multimodal web 2.0 platform that allows asynchronous commenting via text, audio, and video, communicate and perform identity through self-expression in different semiotic modes. A quantitative computer-mediated discourse analysis of three public English-language Voicethreads found that in video and audio comments, both genders express more positive attitudes; they are also more self-conscious and ego-focused. The text comments express more neutral and negative attitudes, especially when written by males, but they are also more socially interactive. With few exceptions, female communication patterns resemble those for audio and video, while male communication patterns resemble those for text. We propose explanations for these findings and discuss their implications for identity performances in interactive multimodal environments.

  • How to be virtually French: Australian Facebook users' co-construction of
           a Francophile identity

      Abstract: The websites of an abundance of Australian businesses invite us to enjoy a more French existence through the purchase of French products, lessons, travel and property, and through participating in the opportunities for interaction they offer via social media. This paper proposes a case study of the forms this interaction takes on the Facebook page of one such vendor. Analysis of the multimodal data posted 2012-2014 by the predominantly Australian participants reveals an intracultural community projecting itself into an idealized construction of French life, even during travel to France. Drawing on positioning theory, the paper details the ways in which the affordances of the social networking page facilitate the construction and ratification of a Francophile identity and expand the possibilities for its performance.

  • The Effects of Social Media on the Dynamics of Identity: Discourse,
           Interaction and Digital Traces

      Abstract: This paper introduces the journal's special issue concerning identity construction in social media. While considering social media, we examine how (and if) its use changes the dynamics of identity: constructing or shaping the identity, negotiating it, etc. In other words, what do social media "do" to dynamics of identity' With our multi-disciplinary background (philosophy, linguistics, cognitive sciences), we will seek to answer this question at least partially by first explaining what we mean by dynamics of identity (part 1) and how we study social media in terms of interactivity and discursiveness and by the digital traces they leave behind (part 2). Thirdly, we will examine identity construction with the temporal, spatial and otherness dimensions, which are the three fundamental aspects of human interaction (part 3).

  • Identity and engagement in networked Open Educational Practice

      Abstract: Open Educational Resources (OER) lie at the heart of the global Open Education movement, which advocates increased access to and support for learning opportunities. To unleash the potential of OER, current research lays emphasis on Open Educational Practice (OEP), as the (re-)use of open resources in learning and teaching contexts. This paper explores the role played by social networks in the deployment of open practice and repercussions on professional identities. A survey was conducted with 18 experts on open resources for language education, with the aim of better understanding processes and forms of user engagement in open practice, the role digital and social technologies can play and the implications for professional identities emerging from engagement in (or abstinence from) open practice.   • Performing Identities in Social Media: Focusing on Language Learners'
           Identity Construction Online

      Abstract: This article starts with an introduction into common public discourse regarding the impact social media has on identity construction (in particular children and youth) and why this is of concern to educational stakeholders. Next, some of the ways in which identity has become a recognized factor in language learning theories are summarized, followed by a brief discussion of conceptualizations that have been applied to the construction of online identities and their link to technology-enhanced language learning processes. This is followed by a study that shows how analysis of online presentation and production can integrate an agentive, performative perspective in order to better understand the fluidity of identity in formal and informal learning environments and how this can enhance language teaching and learning practices.

  • Digital eternities. Post-mortem digital identity from a semio-pragmatic

      Abstract: Nowadays, the persistence of digital data after the death of the user changes the way digital Self-presentation data may be perceived. Using a pragmatic semiotic approach, we consider social discourse as constitutive acts of social relations and place strong emphasis on the technical dimension of the objects supporting communication phenomena (Meunier & Peraya, 2004). This paper proposes to analyse the system of personal data constituting the digital profile of a living or deceased user as a semiotic pattern. We have followed a qualitative rather than quantitative approach, examining in depth a limited quantity of relevant web profiles. The results show how the digital identity model modifies the frame of the living user's digital identity.
