  • Canadian Ethnic Studies in the Changing Context of Immigration: Looking
           Back, Looking Forward
    • Abstract: The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Canadian Ethnic Studies / Études Ethniques au Canada! The journal started fifty years ago as an interdisciplinary publication devoted to the study of ethnicity, immigration, inter-group relations, and the history and cultural life of ethnic groups in Canada. As we celebrate this important milestone, it is important to look back at its history by reflecting on the following questions: How has immigration contributed to the transformation of Canada into an ethno-culturally diverse nation' How has past immigration, settlement, and integration policy in Canada affected and shaped ethnic studies in Canada' What are the future directions for immigration, and racial and ethnic ... • A Retrospective of Canadian Ethnic Studies/Études ethniques au Canada
    • Abstract: The first issue of Canadian Ethnic Studies/Études ethniques du Canada appeared in 1969, a modest research bulletin of the Research Centre for Canadian Ethnic Studies, edited by Alexander Malycky and Clive Cardinal of the Germanic and Slavic Studies Department at the University of Calgary. It appeared sporadically through the early seventies as several other bulletins, bibliographies, book reviews, and review articles. It then transformed into its current format in 1975, under the co-editorship of Drs. Alexander Malycky and Howard Palmer of the History Department, accompanied by a full editorial board represented from across Canada. For the next four years, the journal often combined one regular issue and another ... Read More

  • Multiculturalism in a Comparative Perspective: Australia, Canada and India
    • Abstract: The term ‘Multiculturalism’ means different things to different people. The concept has been interpreted in many ways such as a descriptive concept or as policy so that there are many ‘multiculturalims’ (Eriksen 2006). Its definitions range from extreme tolerance of unfamiliar customs and norms to blaming all immigrants for a society’s economic (unemployment) and social problems such as terrorism (Daily Mail 2011). In common usage it generally refers to equal respect of all cultures in a society, thereby maintaining their cultural distinctiveness. In the political sense it refers to ideology and policies of different countries that deal with diversity in populations. To say that a society is multicultural is to ... Read More

  • Contemporary Ethnic Retailing: An Expanded Framework of Study
    • Abstract: Ethnic retailing is not a new phenomenon. Concentrations of retail activity focused on specific ethnic groups have existed in North American cities for over a century. Traditionally, ethnic retailing refers to businesses that are owned and operated by members of an ethnic group, and that offer culturally specific and suitable goods to serve the co-ethnics of the business owners. The traditional definition implies that the ownership, operation, merchandise, and clientele are all ethnic specific; together, they form an isolated system, where money is retained within the same ethnic group. This definition of ethnic retailing has, however, been blurred, with some ethnic retailers (selling both goods and services) now ... Read More

  • Does Employment in Precarious Work Lead to Wage Disparities For Canadian
           Immigrants'
    • Abstract: Labour force participation with an adequate income by all citizens of a country is fundamental to that country’s economic success. With the increasing arrival of migrants from non-European countries, Canada’s ethnic diversity appears to be expanding. According to a report by Statistics Canada (2013b), over 1 million foreign-born individuals arrived in Canada between 2006 and 2011 making up 17.2 percent of the total foreign-born population in this country (Statistics Canada 2013b). The majority of these individuals arrived from Asia and are some of the most educated immigrants in Canada’s history. Given that higher education is assumed to lead to better jobs with higher earnings, it is reasonable to assume that ... Read More

  • Racial Literacy Practices among Anglophone Caribbean Parents: An Answer to
           Racism in Montreal Elementary Schools
    • Abstract: Canadian researchers have noted that the majority of teachers working in schools within metropolitan cities such as Toronto are white and Anglophone, and in Quebec, they are white and Francophone. In these places, the teaching profession is not reflective of the diversity of student population in the K-12 classrooms (Bernhard 2010; Toussaint 2010). These white teachers may not understand the extent to which Black children and their families are affected by racial and cultural differences between the school and their home. One of these differences relates to the ways that skin colour is used to position individuals in Canadian society. “Skin colour does not necessarily signify race or racial identification, but ...

Read More

  • From India to Canada: An Autoethnographic Account of an International
Student’s Decision to Settle as a Self-Initiated Expatriate
    • Abstract: One of the key challenges facing advanced economies, such as Canada, is an aging workforce and an impending shortage of skilled workers (Burke and Ng 2006). As such, the Canadian government has implemented an aggressive immigration policy aimed at attracting skilled migrants (Ng and Metz 2015). Between 1989 and 2013, Canada accepted 3,210,826 immigrants or permanent residents in its economic class category (Citizenship and Immigration Canada 2014a). “Economic immigrants” are individuals who are selected based on their potential to contribute to Canada’s economy, such as skilled workers and business immigrants (Citizenship and Immigration Canada 2014b). However, recent research suggests that economic immigrants ... Read More

  • Realistic Group Conflict and Voting for the 2002 Aboriginal Treaty
           Negotiations Referendum in British Columbia
    • Abstract: Although Indigenous peoples around the world suffer from poor economic outcomes and widespread discrimination and prejudice (World Bank n.d), the global literature on Indigenous rights has mainly focused on the antecedents of current policies (e.g., Anaya 2009; Attwood and Markus 1999; Barker 2005) rather than the causes of anti-Indigenous public attitudes per se. Outside of Canada, a small group of scholars such as Fetzer and Soper (2011), Pedersen et al. (2004), and Saldierna and Muñiz (2012) has used advanced statistical methods to estimate the effects of various cultural, psychological, and demographic variables on mass-level views of Indigenous rights in general samples. Among the more sociological regressors ... Read More

  • Mastery and Minorities: Sense of Personal Control among Ethno-racial
           Groups in Canada
    • Abstract: This paper assesses how Canada’s ethno-racial groups differ in levels of mastery, which has been defined as the extent to which people believe their life chances are under their own personal control (Milan 2006; Pearlin and Schooler 1978; Pudrovska et al. 2005; Schwartz 1999). American research shows that, compared to other groups, minorities express lower mastery; this can have important negative consequences, including lower physical and mental health, and overall well-being (Hughes et al. 2012; McFarland et al. 2016; Pudrovska et al. 2005; Oates and Goode 2013). Few Canadian studies have compared mastery levels across ethno-racial groups. Research from three decades ago, which looked only at French-English ... Read More

  • Biographical Research Note/Note de recherche biographique: Bapuji
    • Abstract: This is a biographical sketch of Kalidas Samii (a.k.a., Bapuji, a respectful address for a father by his family members. And Kalo as he was called when he was young). It is also a story of a young lad who had to learn the lessons of life the hard way. He was resourceful, and had an ability to confront challenges. An attempt is also made here to provide as a backdrop, an early history of Zanzibar and the migration of people from India, specifically Gujarat and Kutch, a peninsula on the west coast.Bapuji was born in Bhadla, a small village outside Rajkot, Gujarat, in 1891. His father, Samjibapa and mother Jijiben lived in a joint family with three other brothers: Purshottam, Damji and Hirji. They had a business in ... Read More

  • Real Queer' Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Refugees in the
Canadian Refugee Apparatus by David A.B. Murray (review)
    • Abstract: The author, David A. B. Murray, begins this book with a story of his personal encounter in late 2006 with a fellow volunteer (a sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) refugee from Uganda named Edward), while volunteering at a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) helpline. This experience frames the content of this book, which further explores how this group of asylum seekers endeavors to prove both their identity as LGBT refugees and the persecution that they have faced as a result of their membership in this group in their countries of origin. Murray refers to this as the “daunting double challenge” and as a process that is unique to SOGI refugee claimants (13). This book details how SOGI refugee ... Read More
