  • Preparation and Characterization of Polyisocyanurate Modified Polyimide

HamedPoly (isocyanurate-imide)s (PIR-PI)s foams have been prepared from the reaction of polyimide (PI) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) prepolymers with different weight ratios of PIRs. The synthesis involve a two stage reaction process, in which firstly, a polyamic acid was produced from a polycondensation of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4’-oxydianiline (ODA) in the presence of isoquinoline (IQ), benzoic acid and dimethyl formamide (DMF). The polyamic acid was thermally imidized at 190°C to produce the PI precursor which was reacted with PIR prepolymer produced from the trimerization of 6.3 equivalents isocyanate and 1 equivalent polyol with -tris (3-dimethylaminopropyl) hexahydro-s-triazine as catalyst. The PIR-PIs were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric (TGA), differential thermogravimetric (DTG), and solubility analyses. The PIR-PI foams were soluble in polar aprotic solvent only on heating, soluble in H2SO4 at room temperature, but insoluble in acetone. The PIR-PI foams showed excellent thermal stabilities. The temperature of T5% ranged from 328 – 350°C and the residual weights (Rw) were more than 40% at 450°C. The study revealed that presence of phenyl groups and imide structures in the PIR-PI backbone can improve thermal stability.
  • Reinforcement of High Density Polyethylene with Snail Shell Powder

OhaekeThe effects of snail shell powder on the mechanical properties and morphology of high density polyethylene, HDPE /snail shell powder composites were studied. The snail shell powder of particle size 83µm was incorporated into HDPE polymer resins at varying percentages of 0%, 5%, 15% and 25%. The test samples were prepared by using injection moulding machine. The mechanical and morphological properties of high density polyethylene/snail shell powder composites have been characterised by an Instron machine in accordance with ASTM standard and optical microscopy respectively. From the results, hardness was observed to increase while the tensile strength, flexural strength and elongation at break decreased as the filler load increased. The result of the optical microscopy showed that the composites are more compatible than the unfilled composites. The filler improves the compatibility by finely dispersing the filler in the polymer matrix and a better interaction adhesion between the polymer matrix and filler particles.
  • Influence of Composition and Structure on the Property of
           Radiation-Chemical Vulcanizates on the Basis of the Combination of
           Copolymer of EPM-NBR in the Presence of Bis - Phenylmaleimide and Triazine

MammadovaIt was studied the role of 4,4-dithio-bis-phenylmaleimide (DTBFM) and metal oxides (CaO, MgO, ZnO, CdO) in EPM-NBR polymer system under radiation peroxide vulcanization. With the help of mechanochemical analyzes, the elastomeric mixtures were plasticized at low temperatures with the participation of metal oxide. It was shown by the method of sol-gel analysis that the cross-linking of EPM-NBR polymer system proceeds slowly in the absence of metal oxides, the acceleration of crosslinking process of EPM-NBR polymer systems is observed only in the presence of MgO and ZnO. The spatial network parameters were determined: emergence of the yield of cross-link (1\Mc) and crosslinked molecules (1\Mnτ) in the presence of DTBFM. 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl s-triazine (DAFST) was used as the sensitizer. It was established that from the obtained combinations of the sensitizer (DAFST), the accelerator of crosslinking of DTBFM at 500 kGy dose of irradiation, forming cross-links of C-C bonds, provides elastomeric materials, resistant to aggressive media.
  • Novel Thermoplastic Vulcanizates Prepared by Dynamic Vulcanization:
           Undergraduate Experiments for Polymers

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2018Source: American Journal of Polymer Science, Volume 8, Number 1Zhaobo Wang, Baoxiang Wang, Zhiyan Guo, Tong Liu, Yalong Shao, Fanglin DuNovel thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on high impact polystyrene (HIPS)/high vinyl polybutadiene rubber (HVPBR) blends were prepared by dynamic vulcanization where styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymer was used as a compatibilizer. The effect of SBS dosage on the mechanical properties of the TPVs was investigated. Compared with those of HIPS/HVPBR blends, the tensile strength, elongation at break and tearing strength of HIPS/HVPBR blend with 12 phr SBS incorporation were improved remarkably. The morphological evolution during the dynamic vulcanization was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis system (EDX) was used to confirm that the protruding particles in the etched TPV surface were the vulcanized HVPBR particles.
  • Application of DSC in the Study of Thermal History of Cable Insulation

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2017Source: American Journal of Polymer Science, Volume 7, Number 3Armaya’u Usman, Zakariyya Uba ZangoApplication of Differential scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was employed to study the thermal history of cable insulation wire. Samples of pre-heated and non-pre-heated polymer sample of the cable wire were analysed. From the DSC curves plotted against temperature on both pre-heated and non-pre-heated samples there are considerable differences in the curves. Moreover, the pre-heated curves obtained for pre-heated sample at 50 K/min heating rate shows very distinct similarities, the glass transition occurs at 130°C in all the samples. Two major endothermic peaks of melting and decomposition stages at different stages of temperatures between 337.2°C and 347.7°C where observed and a decomposition transition temperatures between 446.1°C and 448.6°C. These were found to be absent in the curves of the non-pre-heated sample which has only a melting transition stage. Observing the entire DSC curves and the graphs plotted, it can be seen that DSC too showed a clear difference on the thermal history of the two different cable wire samples.
  • Polymeric Compositions on the Base of Acrylic Acid and Bentonite Clay

MuhkamedievIn this investigations some peculiarities of obtaining composition hydrogels (CH) on the base of cross-linked polyacrylic acid (PAAc) and bentonite clay (BC) were investigated. Optical microscopy and X ray diffraction have shown that in CH’s destruction of crystalline structure of montmorillonite has carried out owing to penetrative of polymeric macromolecules between bundle layers in result of which CHs have a uniform homogeneous structure. The kinetics of swelling of obtained CH in water was investigated and it was shown that they have a high sorption ability to water in wide interval of pH. Sorption of methylene blue (MB) by gels from water solutions was investigated by statistical method. It was determined that sorption ability of CHs was higher than by hydrogels on the base of PAAc. Sorption of MB has increased with increasing temperature of medium and consequently the bonding of MB by CHs has carried out owing to chemisorption.
  • Effect of Pressure on the Separation of Ethylene from Ethylene/Ethane Gas
           Mixture Using Hollow Fiber Membrane

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2017Source: American Journal of Polymer Science, Volume 7, Number 2Nayef Ghasem, Mohamed Al-Marzouqi, Nadia ShetaThe aim of this work is to study the effects of pressure, gas flow rates, liquid flow rates and silver nitrate concentration on the separation of ethylene/ethane gas using hollow fiber membrane contactor. A mathematical model is developed; the model considers the gas solubility as a function of pressure, temperature and silver nitrate concentration. The model is validated by the accomplished experimental data. The results of model predictions and the experimental data are in excellent agreement. The obtained results indicated that ethylene/ethane separation increases with increasing the inlet gas pressure to certain extent, silver nitrate concentration and liquid flow rates.
  • Influence of Gamma Irradiation on Structure and Properties of
           Nitrile-Butadien Rubber in Presence of Modified Nano Metals

N.Polymer-based nanocomposites NBR in the presence of nanoscale zinc oxide powder were obtained the crosslinking agent disulfochlorid benzene (DSCB) and carbon black. The role of ZnO nanopowders and DSCB in NBR systems NBR+ZnO+DSCB and NBR+ZnO+DSCB+F324 with radiation, chemical exposure. With the help of physico-chemical and spectral methods shown changes in the molecular structure of the rubber NBR, in the presence of ZnO nanopowders and DSCB. Each studied nanocomposites have been identified by and the emergence of cross-linking and cross-linking yield in the rubber. It is shown that the presence of the chemical interaction between polar groups of the macromolecule BNK (-C≡N) DSCB (C-Cl) nano particles of zinc oxide leads to a significant change in the density of spatial grid nanoexamples that provides an increase in the output of cross-links (1/Ms). Shown properties of filled nanocomposites prepared by chemical bonds (C-C) to modify the mechanical properties in the 423K and 500kGy. Especially, conductive properties of nanocomposites are identified based on NBR. It is found that the change in the value of dielectric permittivity (ε) and dielectric losses (tgδ) material depends on chemical reactions of the polymer structure.
  • Comparative Physicochemical Characterization of Chitosan from Shells of
           Two Bivalved Mollusks from Two Different Continents

UzoaganobiThe need to turn seafood wastes that hitherto constitute an environmental pollution into important pharmaceutical excipients is gaining ground worldwide. This study investigated the extraction and characterization of chitosan from two oyster shells: Mytilus edulis and Laevicardium attenuatum from different continents. Demineralization and deproteinization were carried out to obtain chitin from the shells, followed by deacetylation to obtain chitosan. Percent yield, degree of deacetylation and other physicochemical characteristics were determined for the extracted chitosan from the two oyster shells. The yield of chitosan from Mytilus edulis was 51.8% and 43.8% from Laevicardium attenuatum. The degree of deacetylation (DD) of chitosan from Mytilus edulis was 69.6% while that of Laevicardium attenuatum was 37.3%. The Laevicardium attenuatumchitosan had higher swelling ratio. Calcium was the predominant metal ion in the two chitosan. While the micrograph of Mytilus edulis chitosan showed a non-uniform particle distribution, Laevicardium attenuatum chitosan showed a brick-like structure. This work has shown that it is more economical to produce chitosan from Mytilus edulis, and the polymer has higher degree of deacetylation. The higher degree of deacetylation implies better solubility and the chitosan could be more suitable as a permeation enhancer. The Laevicardium attenuatumchitosan could be more suitable for sustained release formulation.

Contributions from researchers with various scientific backgrounds who have worked on different objectives that resulted to several applications of functionalized dendrimers are cited in this review.
