  • Unfolding Workplace Skills through Oral Progress Report Activity (OPRA)
(Merungkai Kemahiran Pekerjaan Melalui Aktiviti Laporan Kemajuan Lisan
           (OPRA))

    • Authors: Wahiza Wahi, Azwan Shaiza Nizam, Normazidah Che Musa
Abstract: In line with the changing nature of the workplace, Malaysian higher learning institutions are currently confronted with issues pertaining to graduates’ lack of ability to communicate confidently and fluently in English and to adapt effectively to the requirements of the workplace. This paper deliberates on the dynamic and constructive workplace skills demonstrated by undergraduate students through Oral Progress Report Activity (OPRA), introduced in an English language course. OPRA requires the students to carry out small group discussions in which they present and discuss the progress of their project work in a meeting-like situation. One student leads the group discussion while the others report on the progress of the project. After conducting the OPRA, the students are asked to write on their experiences, feelings and action plans in their reflective journals. Informed by the social theory of learning, this paper explicates the workplace skills involving communication skills, meeting skills and analytical reasoning. Data for this study are drawn from students’ reflective journals and focus group interviews. The findings of the study illustrate that OPRA enhances students’ communication skills, fosters critical thinking skills and increases students’ self-confidence. The findings also show that OPRA encourages them to become critical of their own performance and skills. The implication of this study suggests that the use of pedagogical approach promotes language and communication, and at the same time, emulates workplace skills is important to train students to acquire workplace skills.

  • Effect of Education Level and Religion on Attitude to Stem Cells in
Malaysia (Kesan Tahap Pendidikan dan Agama ke atas Sikap terhadap Sel Stem
           di Malaysia)

    • Authors: Latifah Amin, Hasrizul Hashim, Maznah Ibrahim, Anisah Che Ngah, Nik Marzuki Sidik
Abstract: The issue of using stem cells derived from human embryos and adult tissues to treat diseases has been divisively debated mainly due to ethical concerns. The objective of this article was to assess and compare the attitude level of the Malaysian public in the Klang Valley region towards human adult stem cells (hASCs) and human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Results of the survey on 509 adult respondents revealed that the Malaysian public expressed higher support for hASCs, perceived the application as having lower moral concern and more acceptable by their religion as compared to hESCs. Univariate analysis following Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) confirmed that there were significant differences for perceived benefits and religious acceptance of hASCs across education level. Respondents who hold tertiary education level tended to perceive both hESCs and hASCs as more beneficial and believed the applications as more acceptable from their religious point of view. Their opinion of hASCs differed significantly compared to the respondents who hold pre-university education. Respondents from all religions perceived both hESCs and hASCs as having moderate benefits and risks. Significant differences were only detected for perceived moral concerns and encouragement of hESCs across religion. The Christians expressed greater moral concern of both hESCs and hASCs compared to other religions but post hoc test only detected significant difference in their opinion on hESCs from the Buddhists. The Buddhists were found to be more supportive towards both hESCs and hASCs but their support level for hESCs only differed significantly from the Muslims.

  • Aggression Profiles of Incarcerated Malaysian Male Murderers (Profil
Agresif Pembunuh Lelaki Malaysia yang telah Dipenjarakan)

    • Authors: Mohammad Rahim Kamaluddin, Azizah Othman, Khaidzir Ismail, Geshina Ayu Mat Saat
Abstract: Criminological and psychological researches have highlighted aggressive behavior as the basic ingredient of violent crime, including murder. Increased concerns about the rate of murder in Malaysia have called for studies examining aggression profiles of the Malaysian murderers. The present study intends to explore the aggression profiles of Malaysian male prisoners convicted of murder, utilizing Buss and Perry’s Four Structure Aggression Model. A cross-sectional methodology was adapted as a research design of the present study. A guided self-administered questionnaire was distributed among 71 Malaysian male prisoners convicted of murder using purposive sampling method. The entire aggression profiles are assessed using Aggression Questionnaire-12 items (AQ-12). Descriptive item analyses were carried out to elicit the level of responses for each item in the AQ-12 while bivariate analyses were used to ascertain associations among aggression subscales. The aggression profiles indicated that the mean score of anger (8.10, SD = 2.93) was higher than other forms of aggression traits. The least mean score was noted for verbal aggression (6.24, SD = 2.45). Among the respondents, 54.9% of them scored above the mean score (8.10) for anger subscale. This was followed by 52.1% who scored above the mean score (7.77) for physical aggression subscale. The correlations among all the aggression subscales had indicated positive and significant associations which in turn, may enable it to be a platform to inspire other researches in this field. In conclusion, this ground-breaking study among male murderers has successfully explored aggression profiles using AQ-12.Keywords: Violence; crime; criminal behavior; male murderers; murder ABSTRAKKajian kriminologi dan psikologi telah mengutarakan tingkah laku agresif sebagai ramuan asas untuk jenayah kekerasan, termasuk pembunuhan.

  • Unsur Semiotik dalam Wacana Iklan Kecantikan (Semiotic Elements in the
           Discourse of Beauty Advertisements)

    • Authors: Maserah Shabudin, Noraini Ibrahim
Kata kunci: Semiotik; media cetak majalah; bahasa Jepun; analisis wacana; wanita Kaukasia Oksidental ABSTRACTIn the discourse of women’s beauty product advertisements, the elements of semiotics are the most important and play a huge role in communicating the concept and message about a product that is to be advertised. Visual image is said to be more effective and more meaningful than a thousand words, simaltenously plays a very important role in attracting the consumers’ attention and as a tool to form a dialectical relationship between the discourser and the public. In the homogenous, monolithic and monoethnic Japanese society, research shows that there are interventions of Occidental Caucasian women’s image application in the creation of discourse of beauty product advertisements in Japan. This article discusses the mechanism of semiotic elements that is oriented towards Western ideology of beauty which is exploited in 23 texts of women’s beauty product advertisements in Japanese language. Analysis is based on Fairclough’s framework of discourse analysis. Interpretation shows that the discourser has utilised as maximal as possible, the values, image as well as the positive and prestigious etnocultural stereotypes brought by the Western countries. The enthusiasm of Japanese women in imitating the style of Occidental Caucasian women which is considered as the ‘symbol of world culture’ and ‘universal beauty’ in terms of dressing, make up, hair styling, facial and bodily physical features is utilised as best as possible by the discourser in creating, developing and instilling the ideology of occidental beauty in order to influence, and to attract the attention and interest of Japanese women towards a beauty product. Keywords: Semiotics; magazine print media; Japanese language; discourse analysis; occidental Caucasian women

  • The Relationship between Attitude, Intention, and Entrepreneurship Career
Choice among Malaysian Indian Undergraduates (Hubungan Sikap, Keinginan,
dan Pemilihan Kerjaya Keusahawanan dalam Kalangan Prasiswazah India
           Malaysia)

Abstract: Entrepreneurship involves processes of starting and managing a venture and business of a company or organization. The entrepreneurs are responsible in developing their own business plan, acquire human and other available resources. Entrepreneurship is an essential field for a nation’s economic development because it creates job opportunities and brings wealth to the people. Despite being fanned around the globe, entrepreneurship is taken lightly in Malaysia especially among the Indian graduates. In order to highlight this problem, this study was designed to identify the relationship between attitude and intention towards an entrepreneurial career choice among the Indian undergraduates. A total of 315 Indian undergraduates from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, and Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur were selected as respondents for this study. In this survey method study, a set of questionnaires were distributed online to the respondents and data obtained were analyzed using descriptive, regression, and ran using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 19.0. The findings show that, intention is highly correlated with an entrepreneurship career choice (r=0.854) while attitude possessed milder effects with a moderate correlation (r=0.510) at a significant level of 0.05. These findings suggest that attitude and intention influence an entrepreneurship career choice. Education is well known in contributing to attitude and intention development. Attitude and intention at higher education institutions are very important in predicting students to choose entrepreneurship as a career. Thus, education is a powerful tool to enhance attitude and intention in favor of choosing entrepreneurship as a career. • Analisis Kajian Sastera: Semiotik Dalam Novel Anwar Ridhwan (Analysis of
Literature Research: Semiotik dalam Novel Anwar Ridhwan)

    • Authors: Jyh Wee Sew
Kata kunci: Buku ilmiah Melayu; kajian semiotik; Anwar Ridhwan; novel Melayu; mitologi ABSTRACTThis discussion inspects the quality of a Malay academic book published in 2014. The academic framework examines the external presentation and the internal structures. The former scrutinises the qualities of editing, and attentiveness to referencing whereas the latter evaluates the qualities of research as well as the accuracy in using aspects of theory as part of the argument. The quality of editing informs on the accuracy of spelling whereas attentiveness academic referencing entails a complete inclusion of all the consulted references in the bibliography. Research quality refers to any expansion of knowledge from the analysis of the book in cohesion with the existing findings, or any reconciliation for the existing findings identified in the literature review. The accuracy of theoretical application, on the other hand, refers to the author’s clarity in detailing the arguments towards a new horizon of viewpoints based on the selection of specific components from the theory subscribed in the research. This article shows that the book under investigation contains shortcomings ranging from errors in spelling to inconsistent reference organization in the bibliography. Furthermore, the rather limited discussion in the book on the associations between signifier and signified fails to uphold the concept of mythology, a higher order semiotic analysis pioneered by Roland Barthes. Due to a surface application of the field of semiotics, that is a mere counting of icon, index and symbols in the analyses, the research of this book is limited to a cataloguing of semiotics terminology into Malay novels. Keywords: Malay academic book; semiotic research; Anwar Ridhwan; Malay novel; mythology

  • Dilemma Kemiskinan: Falsafah, Budaya dan Strategi (Poverty Dilemma:
           Philosophy, Culture and Strategies)

    • Authors: Kartini Aboo Talib @ Khalid
Kata kunci: Kemiskinan; kategori; strategi; budaya; multidimensi ABSTRACTThe discourse in this article highlights the needs for poverty to be redefined and reconceptualized due to multidimensional factors that deter the efforts to alleviate poverty. The common measurement to identify poverty is always within the lens of rational economic approach based on income and wealth or resource-based. Poverty dilemma and causes are beyond economic rationality, thus poverty variables for redefinition must include capability deprivation such as limited or deprived access to health, education, infrastructure, political freedom and human rights, resources and many more. Poverty categories need to be refocused and must identify other categories such as the invisible poor, vulnerable poor, cronic poverty, and urban poverty. Each category represents different contexts in term of class, community and spatial. This article outlines the strategies of multidimensional approach to poverty that are grounded in the philosophy of poverty. Poverty culture and stereotypes are analysed critically and it justifies that poverty categories must consider the socialisation aspect, knowledge, and contexts. Additionally, such perspective also demands consistent intervention programs from the government and non-government organisations in order to change the poverty culture and vicious cycle. In fact, intervention programs must be able to cater contemporary changes to income level, size of family, inflation, unemployment, health issue, aged factor, etc. Most welfare assistances are managed by the Baitulmal, state alms, and state welfare agency; hence it is mandatory for these institutions to equip themselves with the current issue on poverty definition, category, type of assistance, and entitlement to ensure that the rights of the poor is delivered and protected. Keywords: Poverty; category; strategy; culture; multidimension

  • A Glimpse at Women Entrepreneurs in Penang (Satu Tinjauan kepada Usahawan
           Wanita di Pulau Pinang)

    • Authors: Zarina Md Nor, Zuraidah Ramli
Abstract: Women entrepreneurship is a force to be reckoned with. Women in business are commonly found all over the country and they help to create vibrant economic activities in domestic arena. This study focuses on the characteristics of 50 women entrepreneurs in the state of Penang, Malaysia. Among others, we find that many of them are stay-at-home married women with children. Therefore, they have to juggle and find balance between family life and their business. It is interesting to note that 84 percent come from families with entrepreneurial experiences. Therefore, it is fair to say that this kind of exposure has cultivated interest among these women to become entrepreneurs themselves. Further, family support has been one of the important factors that encourage these women to venture into businesses. However, despite their involvement in business, 50 percent of our respondents have not attended any training and courses on entrepreneurship. It seems that they rely more on advices from family members on issues related to their business compared to formal or government institutions. This is probably due to their reliance on personal savings and family sources of capital in embarking into the businesses such that institutional involvement is minimal in charting the direction of their businesses though they are aware of various kinds of financial assistance provided by the government. Hence, even in a smaller scale, women entrepreneurs are increasingly creating wealth for the nation while simultaneously caring for their families.

  • Transitiviti Dalam Bahasa Mendriq (Transitivity in Mendriq Language)

    • Authors: Fazal Mohamed Mohamed Sultan, Khairul Faiz Alimi
Kata kunci: Bahasa Mendriq; program Minimalis; kerjaan; transitif; intransitif ABSTRACTMalaysia is rich with 19 moribund languages spoken by minority people in Malaysia, who are known as Orang Asli. One of these moribund languages that is on the verge of extinction is the Mendriq language. Mendriq is a language which is spoken by Orang Asli Mendriq in Kuala Lah, Gua Musang, Kelantan. It is spoken by 245 people in three villages namely kampung Kuala Lah, Kampung Baru and Kampung Kuala Stail. This paper analyzes transitive and intransitive verb phrases in Mendriq. Primary data of Mendriq is obtained through fieldwork that was funded by a research grant UKM-GUP-PLW-08-11-047. The data that was collected involved field work which utilized interview techniques. The composition of the data collected through the field work was sorted out with the help of a Mendriq translator. The analysis on the verb phrases involved descriptive and theoretical analyses. The descriptive analysis on its simple sentences indicates Mendriq has transitive and intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs indicate two arguments namely internal and external arguments. Intransitive verbs on the other hand, are divided into two types which are unaccusative and unergative verbs. Intransitive verb which implies external argument is known as an unergative verb, while intransitive verb that only indicates internal argument is known as an unaccusative verb. While, the theoretical analysis using the Minimalist framework displays that the features checking involves the left pheriphery of the syntactic structure in Mendriq simple sentences.Keyword: Mendriq language; Minimalist program; verbs; transitive; intransitive
