Case of Construction Firms in China

    • Authors: Shigang Yan, Guozhi Liu
      Pages: 1 - 9
Abstract: As an important participant in the international construction market, Chinese construction firms (CCFs) are confronted with the tasks of keeping themselves competitive. To help CCFs maintain and improve their competitiveness, this research builds a conceptual model to investigate the relationship between competitive strategy, market entry mode and performance within CCFs. Based on data collected from CCFs, this research has confirmed the importance of cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy and business scope diversification, to achieve their superior performance. • Development Aid: A Perspective on the World Bank Performance Calculating
the Social Return on Investment for the Least Developed

    • Authors: Dominik Schäfer
      Pages: 24 - 41
Abstract: This paper focuses on the evaluation of the World Bank (WB) performance in delivering development aid to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The portfolio Net Present Value (NPV) at the result stage of the LDCs (168 projects) was positive with NPV values ranging from 42,059 to 50,779 Mio USD (33,506 Mio USD total project costs) and from 6,188 to 7,799 Mio USD excluding the 7 outlier projects with abnormally “high-value” NPVs. The minimum Social Return on Investment (SROI) of the LDCs including all project costs was calculated. This SROI ratio outcomes of 1 and 1.06 in the weighted and 1.3 and 1.72 in the unweighted case indicate that projects delivered by the WB have a positive effect on the poor countries.

  • Selecting an Appropriate Strategy to Increase Petrochemical Product Sales
           (Case Study: Iranian Petrochemical Industry)

    • Authors: H. Esmaeili Shahmirzadi
      Pages: 42 - 54
Abstract: This article aims to find the best strategies which help increase petrochemical products sales in Iran using multivariate regression model, Grand Strategy Matrix (GSM), and SWOT matrix. Market Development, Market Penetration, Product Development by creating and developing chemical cities or parks, petro-chemical refineries, and Especial Economic Zones, Vertical Integration, and Concentric Diversification with Diverse Portfolio were considered independent variables, while Increasing Petrochemical Product Sales is dependent variable. Then, each of above mentioned factors affecting the sales were ranked in order to take advantage of the highest added-value. The statistical population consisted of 140 experts, managers, directors, and customers involved in National Iranian Gas Company and Iran Petrochemical Company. Random sampling method was employed. A total of 57experts, managers, directors, and customers were enrolled as sample size. Data were collected using a five-option Likert scale questionnaire. SPSS, Grand Strategy Matrix (GSM), and SWOT[1] matrix were employed to analyze the data. According to the Cronbach's alpha (0.86), the reliability was verified. Market Development, Market Penetration, Product Development, and Concentric Diversification with Diverse Portfolio were found to be suitable offensive strategies to increase the petrochemical product sales. Product Development and Market Penetration are the most effective factors in increasing the petrochemical product sales. Therefore, they need to be taken into account.

  • The Link between Transformational Leadership Traits and Corporate Culture
Types: The Prerequisites for Sustainable Performance in Public and Private
           Sectors Organizations

    • Authors: Paul L. Flemming, Barbara E. Flemming
      Pages: 55 - 70
Abstract: This study has investigated the link between transformational leadership styles, corporate organizational culture types and performance in four public sector organizations. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of individual leadership traits, and culture types on performance in public organizations there by validating the arguments made by scholars and practitioners that organizational performance is more evident in private sector corporations. The behavior elements examined in this study were idealized influence behavior, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, idealized influence and effectiveness. The cultural variables used were clan culture, adhocracy culture, market culture, and hierarchal culture. This study utilized a survey designed and implemented a quantitative methodology. The analysis used primary data produced by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to administer on 200 respondents from four of the largest public sector organizations in the United State Virgin Islands to examine the relationship of transformational leadership, organizational performance and corporate organizational culture. The responses were scaled and coded to enable the segmentation of the data into dependent and independent variables based on the leadership, performance and culture variables. The study utilized the multiple regression models and correlation statistical analyses to determine the degree of commonality among the components. The study concluded that transformational leadership and corporate organizational culture have positive effects on facilitating performance and is best suited in managing change and innovation in mature public and private sector organizations.

           App─The Case of Facebook

    • Authors: Yi-Wen Fan, Juo-Tzu Tseng, Yu-Hsien Fang, Zheng-Yen Li, Yea-Huey Su
      Pages: 71 - 79
Abstract: Mobile Internet is coming. The social networking site application (SNS app) has become an important portal for users accessing social networking services. Based on the point of view of existing social network users, this study integrates the technology value-based adoption model and social influence to propose a framework to investigate factors influencing the use intention of the SNS app. A sample of 223 subjects surveyed from Facebook, it was found that user’s perceived value regarding the SNS app positively affects the use intention of the social networking app. Usefulness and Technicality provided by SNS app positively affects perceived value of the app. In addition, user perceived social influence also positively affects the use intention of the social networking app. Results not only advance knowledge related to social network research, as well as provide practical advice to social networking companies. They also suggest how to attract users to continually participate in social networks. Increase activeness and stickiness is critical for social network companies to facilitate long-term development.

  • Moderation Effect of Exchange Rate to Signaling Theory Validity in
           Indonesia Stock Exchange

    • Authors: Jonnardi Sutan Mantari, Nuryasman Sn
      Pages: 80 - 89
Abstract: Asymmetric information occurs between management and stakeholders and it is especially important for investors to push the company to provide a credible signal, which will differentiate it from other companies that are not performing well. In a previous study that examined the relationship between the variables of capital structure, the company's growth and profitability of the enterprise value, it has been concluded that these three variables have a positive relationship and are credible signals related to the value of any company's future. The conclusions of many similar studies support and are consistent with the signaling theory. It is hypothesised that macroeconomic conditions in which the company operates would moderate the relationship that already exists, so that capital structure, asset growth and profitability are no longer considered by investors as a credible signal on the value of the company's future. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the exchange rate as a moderating variable on the validity of signaling theory in the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The research was designed as a descriptive study and verification by using secondary data. The research was carried out on non-financial industry issuers listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) covering observation period from 2009 to 2013 year. The members of the sample have been selected using stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using panel data regression.Based on the analysis of regression panel data, we concluded that the exchange rate variable proved to have a quasi moderating influence on the pre-existing relationship between the variables of capital structure, the company's growth and profitability of the enterprise value. The moderating effects of exchange rate variable causes in particular the variables capital structure and profitability to be no longer a credible signal to the value of the company's future.

  • Between Ambitions and Ambivalences: Cross-cultural Diversity Management
           and Immigrant Integration

    • Authors: Laura Zanfrini, Massimiliano Monaci
      Pages: 10 - 23
Abstract: This article provides an outline and discussion of the main findings of an international research realized in 10 EU countries on Cross-cultural Diversity Management practices for immigrant workers. The fundamental aim is to explore the role of such practices for the promotion of a new model of integration based on the exploitation of immigrants’ human capital as a strategic lever for EU competitiveness. This goal is achieved through a targeted selection and a re-elaboration of the key indications from the research, which entailed desk-based analyses and the carrying out of more than 100 case histories of for-profit, public and not-for-profit organizations. By focusing on the variety of the observed practices and their impact in the context of a broader reflection on immigrant integration in EU countries, the paper suggests that there is potential for the development of significant diversity management actions towards immigrant workers.
