  • The Indigenisation Policy and Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe: A Case
           Study of the Zimunya-Marange Communities

    • Authors: Zvavahera Promise, Chigora Farai, Roselyn Tandi
      First page: 12
Abstract: This study sought to evaluate the impact of the Indigenisation Policy on the socio-economic emancipation of rural communities in Zimbabwe. A case study approach was taken focusing on the Marange and Zimunya communities in Manicaland Province of Zimbabwe, where diamonds are being mined. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were applied to get a balanced view from these two communities on their socio-economic improvement because of the mining of diamonds, which are a valuable natural resource found in these two communities. Purposive sampling was applied to come up with the sample of senior politicians and traditional leaders. Two Focus groups were formed in the two communities. The study established that the five diamond mining companies doing business in the two communities had failed to honour their pledges of contributing USD10 million each towards the development of the two communities. Only USD400 000 was contributed by two mining companies at the time of the study. Ninety five percent (95%) of the respondents reported that there were no projects that were being implemented to benefit the local communities. It was therefore, concluded that there was limited socio-economic empowerment of the Marange-Zimunya communities by the diamond mining companies. The study recommended the intervention by the Government in order for these mining companies to honour their pledges by coming up with empowerment projects and also by allowing the two communities to have shares in these companies so that they could be economically empowered.

  • Liquidity and Profitability Analysis of Non-Financial Entities Listed on
           the Macedonian Stock Exchange

    • Authors: Dusica Stevcevska Srbinoska
      First page: 34
Abstract: Liquidity management has a considerable influence on company performance. By analyzing secondary financial company data, this paper seeks to assess the correlation between liquidity and profitability. Through the use of audited annual report of 76 non-financial entities listed on the Macedonian Stock Exchange for the period 2014-2017, the study looks into the association between two traditional liquidity measures, current ratio and acid-test ratio, and three profitability measures, return on assets, return on equity and return on capital employed. Prior to embarking on the statistical research, literature review was performed to obtain basis for the test of hypotheses. Through the use of SPSS software, the dataset comprised of 304 observations generated descriptive statistics, and was subjected to tests of normality and variable correlation testing. The empirical findings designate that liquidity and profitability depict a positive association and that the correlation between current ratio and quick ratio on one hand and ROA and ROE on the other is statistically significant. Moreover, the empirical work reveals a slow trade receivables collection across several Macedonian industries which may damage the long-term solvency of companies, especially in times of recession and economic hardship when liquid funds are a must. In conclusion, this study suggests that the liquidity-profitability relationship should be subject to further scholarship having in mind the immense importance that liquidity management has on the financial health and stability of firms.

  • Determinants for Effective Implementation of Electronic Payment System by

    • Authors: Kulwa Mangana, Mangasini Katundu
      First page: 47
Abstract: The era of rapid growth of the internet has witnessed the exponential growth of electronic payment systems (EPS); consequently, business transactions are constantly shifting from cash-based to electronic-based system. This paper is a product of a research conducted to explore factors that could influence effective adoption and implementation of the EPS among hospitals in Tanzania and the challenges associated with its adoption. The study used the KCMC as a case in point. The case study design was used. In this study we sampled 152 respondents randomly who included clients at the outpatient clinics of the hospital. The data were gathered using a structured questionnaire consistent with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The findings suggest that the majority of the clients preferred to use EPS whereas, intention to use EPS, previous experience in the use of EPS, and being banked were significant factors influencing both preference of EPS and intention to use EPS. It is recommended that in order to hasten adoption of EPS in Tanzania it is important to address the identified barriers and also to encourage clients to keep their money in and use the services of banks.

  • Book Review: Brian Tracy, Something for Nothing, Why We Do the Things We
Do. Jaico Publishing House, Mumbai, 2009, reprint 2011, p. 245, ISBN:

    • Authors: Mangasini Katundu
      First page: 74
Abstract: In his book Tracy discusses “the something for nothing” syndrome, he answers the main question, “why we do the things we do'” The author associates what we do the things we do with what he called “human nature”, that every individual has both the “bright side” and a “dark side” of his nature, an angel and a devil. According to the author these two forces compete continually in an individual’s mind and heart and hence, they control individual’s thoughts, feelings and actions (p. 2). He reminds everyone that, real life is different from dreams; people have various sweet dreams which sometimes may not come true. Life is difficult; we need to work hard to realize our dreams.

Health Service in the Kumasi Metropolis

    • Authors: Victoria Timah
      First page: 77
Abstract: The quest for quality efficient workforce in the attainment of organizational goals continues to attract attention from organizations in their desire to remain competitive in the business arena. This study sought to assess the impact of training on staff performance at the Ghana Health Service in the Kumasi Metropolis (GHS-K). The research was conducted through questionnaire administration on the impact of staff training and development at GHS-K. The questionnaire was administered to randomly selected health workers at the selected public hospitals and staff of GHS-K. The data collected were analyzed to yield frequencies and percentages of responses. The results showed that In-service training (85.0%) as part of on-the-job training types dominate training programmes organized by GHS-Kumasi Metro and that greater number of these programmes are routine (66.0%) in nature and as such do not base on training- needs assessment. The study also shows that the organization of training and development programmes at GHS-K has brought some remarkable improvement (59.0%) in the performance of employees, and that financial constraints (64.0%) and lack of organizational objectives (54.0%) pose a challenge to its sustenance. The study concludes that as more training programmes in varying forms are given to employees and right procedures adopted, better performance of job execution will be achieved.

  • Long Run Performance of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in Pakistan

    • Authors: Zahira Batool
      First page: 95
Abstract: This study is aimed to analyze long run performance of initial public offerings (IPOs) in Pakistan by taking the sample of 15 firms for the period of 2006 to 2011. We took secondary data for our research from KSE, SBP, and Brecorder. Stock returns of IPO firms are considered as dependent variables and firm size, firm age, profitability and leverage ratios are considered as explanatory variables for the long run performance of IPOs. Previous literature on IPOs indicates that IPOs underperform in the long run. Firm’s size and profitability have some significant positive correlation with the IPOs long run performance. All the findings of this research paper depend upon the background of the different industry sectors, the perspective of the study and sample distribution. And the Leverage ratio and Age of the firms are negatively correlated with the long run performance of the IPOs.
