    • Authors: Francisco L. Roman
      Pages: 1 - 35
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 1-35, June 2017.
David Chen moved from Ijutsu Philippines to Indonesia more than three years ago to turn around an ailing pharmaceutical organization, PT Ijutsu Indonesia (PTII). As President and Director, he played a crucial role in the successful transformation of the company, particularly in setting and meeting annual growth targets. The most pressing problem Chen faced at the time was internal resistance to change. Facing the problem meant focusing on the company’s marketing and selling organization and practices, such as heavy price discounting, and on professionalizing the team. He also addressed organizational and human resource development issues as part of a review of the PTII strategy. Encouraged by his success, the head office required him to meet even more ambitious targets in the future.

      Pages: 37 - 80
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 37-80, June 2017.
Chery, which used to be the leader of Chinese indigenous automobile manufacturers as well as the entry-level market, has been losing its leader position since 2010. Chery, founded in 1997, has experienced a radical expansion along with industrial liberalization and economic growth in China since 2000. In 2007, Chery started the internationalization strategy by launching two middle and high-end brands and developing a series of joint ventures consecutively. However, Chery has confronted various challenges since 2010 with the growing maturity of Chinese automobile industry, including declining domestic sales and market share, and thus was in a weak position under attack. Finally, Chery announced its tactical adjustments in April 2013. This case describes the co-evolution between the environmental transitions of Chinese automotive industry and the business strategies of Chery. Students are asked to analyze the development of Chery and provide specific suggestions of future directions on competitive strategy for Chery.

  • Fostering Rural Financial Services through Technology: The Case of FINO
           PayTech
    • Authors: Debasish Maitra, Parijat Upadhyay
      Pages: 81 - 117
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 81-117, June 2017.
The case depicts a situation faced by a company in the business of financial inclusion services. FINO PayTech Limited (popularly known as FINO) was the first mover in the blue ocean of financial inclusion business in India. It is quoted as the world’s largest banking agent manager. Formed in Mumbai in 2006 with the mission to solve problem of financial exclusion, FINO entered the market riding on the biometric smartcard and hand held devices technology and had since grown exponentially. It served more than 64 million end customers all across India adding average of one million new customers to the formal financial system every month. FINO’s uniqueness came from factors such as diversified product offering (which ranges from savings, credit, payment services, remittances, insurance, financial literacy, and so on), a robust technology, a dedicated channel of bandhus (banking correspondents/agents) and mature processes. The top leadership envisaged that FINO could not remain limited to savings and withdrawals activity if it had to reach many more million customers. The credit and micro insurance services had to be provided at the doorstep of the people and only then could FINO possibly project itself as a multi-product delivery company and that’s the challenge management was encountering when scaling up in a constrained regulatory framework.

  • Reliance Communications Ltd.: A House of Cards'
    • Authors: S. R. Vishwanath, Vijaya Narapareddy
      Pages: 119 - 147
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 119-147, June 2017.
Reliance Communications Ltd., a large, Indian telecom company has experienced severe financial difficulties brought on by poor management practices, an ill-conceived capital expenditure of more than $6 billion, a debt load of $5.8 billion, and changing industry dynamics. Interestingly, two analysts at a Canadian Investment Research firm gave a “sell” recommendation on the stock with a target price of INR 15 when the stock was trading at INR 93. The analysts also pointed out a possible rip-off of minority shareholders by the firm’s founders. The company’s stock price fell from a high of INR 844 in 2008 to INR 46 in 2012. The company is in the process of restructuring its assets and liabilities. The case considers the economics of the business from the perspective of shareholders. Students are required to assess the company’s performance and decide whether they would invest in the company’s shares. The first half of the case describes the company’s constituent businesses and the strategy followed by the wireless division. This gives students an opportunity to critique RCL’s marketing strategy and pricing of its services. The second half describes the company’s financial strategy, the instruments it issued and its restructuring initiatives. The case allows students to examine problems associated with high leverage and the challenges to restructuring in emerging markets.

  • Fiamchi: Fishing in Troubled Waters
    • Authors: Atul Arun Pathak, Manish Singhal
      Pages: 149 - 174
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 149-174, June 2017.
Abhijeet, Amit, Alok and Saumitra met recently while attending a six-month residential course on entrepreneurship at a leading management institute in eastern India and decided to start a business venture together. They formed a partnership firm named Fiamchi, and explored the opportunity of producing the Pangasius breed of catfish in either open tanks or using the cage farming method. The opportunity looked attractive. There was good demand for fish locally. Also, technical and financial support was available through various government schemes. The cost-structure was such that their venture had a good chance of making profits. However, social issues peculiar to Jharkhand state, the region where they were planning to start their venture, made their decision to go ahead a tough one. A largely uneducated, poverty stricken, nature worshiping, tribal population lived in the area. There was a possibility that the local population would oppose the project due to their social and religious beliefs. Also, the region was affected by Naxalite violence. The entrepreneurs were concerned about the impact that the social unrest and violence would have on their venture. More importantly, they were also worried that the local population would initially allow them to commence their business but cause a “hold-up” at a later stage when the investments were already made. For a business dealing in the production of a rather fragile and perishable product, this sort of a ‘hold-up’ would have serious negative implications and lead to large losses. The case discusses four strategic alternatives that the entrepreneurs need to evaluate. They can either buy peace; collaborate in government projects in the region; approach local population through a not-for-profit or non-governmental organization; or seek corporate support through the corporate social responsibility activities of a large company active in the region.

  • Koufu: Fortune of an Entrepreneurial Singapore Hawker
    • Authors: Pui Mun Lee, Chong Guan, Calvin M. L. Chan
      Pages: 175 - 205
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 175-205, June 2017.
This case traces the rags-to-riches entrepreneurial journey of Mr Pang Lim in building his Koufu food court business empire over the past decades amidst the changing landscape of the food and beverages industry in Singapore. After dropping out of school at 13 years old, Mr Pang started work as a dishwasher in the 1960s. However, his entrepreneurial acumen enabled him to seize strategic opportunities and adapt to changing environmental forces to become the owner of Koufu, a leading food court chain in Singapore. When Koufu was founded in 2002, the food court business in Singapore was already dominated by other major players such as Food Junction and Kopitiam. Yet, through astute management, clearly defined market segmentation strategies, and a significant focus in brand-building, Koufu grew into an international food court empire. By 2012, it consisted of 54 food courts in Singapore, one food court in Macau, and annual revenue of $152.7 million. Koufu also grew to become one of Singapore’s most established F&B brands with many sub-brands in its stable. This case is suitable for use in Marketing Strategy and Strategic Marketing courses. Key marketing and branding theories and concepts illustrated in this case include macro-environment and micro-environment analysis; segmentation, targeting and positioning strategies; and branding architectures (i.e., house of brands, branded house, house brand).

  • WPG Holdings: Electronic Integration of Supply Chain Network
    • Authors: Hsin-Lu Chang, Wan-Chu Yen
      Pages: 207 - 230
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 207-230, June 2017.
Globalization and the development of information technology not only accelerate the growth of the electronics industry but also threaten the industry in an increasingly competitive market. In order to have a leadership position in the electronics industry’s supply chain system, WPG Holdings, as a distributor of electronic components, needs to not only maintain a good relationship with existing upstream suppliers and downstream customers but also to consolidate its position through continuous mergers and acquisitions. However, these strategies also confront WPG with the complexity of network structure. Thus, the application and adjustment of information technology play an important role in WPG’s operations. This case study presents an example for business-to-business supply chain network integration. The study allows students to understand how WPG has overcomed its problems using various solutions and additionally has become the largest Asian electronic components distributor and one of the top three electronic components distributors worldwide.

  • The Challenges at JSW Steel: Brand Valuation and Corporate Governance
           Issues
    • Authors: Pitabas Mohanty, Tina Stephen
      Pages: 231 - 251
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 01, Page 231-251, June 2017.
The shareholders of JSW Steel received a list of 24 items that would be put to vote in the AGM of the company, to be held on 31 July, 2014 along with the annual report of the company for the 2013–14 fiscal year. Item No. 23 of this list was a surprising addition, as the company stated that the brand name ‘JSW’ belongs to a private company called JSW Investments Private Limited (JSWIPL), promoted by Ms. Sangeeta Jindal, the wife of Mr. Sajjan Jindal, the Managing Director of JSW Jindal. It further stated that henceforth JSW Steel would pay 0.25% of the net consolidated turnover to JSWIPL for the use and promotion of the brand. The stock price fell in reaction to this news. JSW Steel justified its move by arguing that payment of royalties for the use of brand name is a common practice followed by Indian business groups. Many corporate governance experts, however, called this an abusive transaction and advised the shareholders to vote against the proposal. This case allows the examination of issues such as related party transactions and their corporate governance implications and the relevance of brand valuation for a steel company.
