Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 253-280, December 2017.
Korean fashion firms face difficulties in sustaining their growth momentum because of market stagnation and the aggressive entry of global luxury and SPA brands. To find a breakthrough, local fashion firms are adopting diverse strategies, including direct entry, licensing, and acquisitions, to successfully tap into the global market. Kolon FnC, which is among the five affiliates of Kolon Industries, focuses its business in the production and sales of fashion goods and clothing lines. Focusing on its strength as a leading brand power in the sports and outdoor segment, Kolon FnC is making strategic moves, such as diversifying its fashion portfolio, creating new value by collaborating with artists, and enhancing its R&D capability for new garment materials, which is led by one of its sister affiliates, Kolon Fashion Material. Under the leadership of the newly appointed CEO Dong-Mun Park, Kolon FnC is aggressively seeking talented young designers in Korea to differentiate itself from its global competitors. CEO Park strongly believes that talented young Korean designers can be a viable source of competitive advantage against global competitors. Since 2010, Kolon FnC has acquired several small-sized designer shops and fashion accessory shops to diversify its fashion portfolio and to create a young and vibrant brand image. This approach marks a departure from the strategic paths of its major local competitors, as Korean fashion firms typically focus on licensing or acquiring foreign brands. This case aims to identify the practical implications of global expansion strategies by analyzing how the Korean fashion industry has evolved and how Kolon FnC and its competitors have deployed different global expansion strategies in developing their resources and/or capabilities for future growth.

  • Gucci: Facing Growing Challenges in China
    • Authors: Ivy S. N. Chen, Sherriff T. K. Luk
      Pages: 281 - 310
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 281-310, December 2017.
High economic growth, increasing disposable incomes and an emerging middle class that was optimistic about the future had created a booming market for luxury goods in China. Growing wealth was accompanied by greater willingness to spend and travel. Many Chinese now had the opportunity to travel for business and leisure and this had increased their exposure to luxury brands and lifestyles overseas. The culture of gift giving for business as well as social reasons was also fuelling this demand. Luxury goods were also a symbol of success in this emerging market. Gucci had seen tremendous growth in China but of late, this growth had stagnated due to the slowing economy and the government’s crackdown on corruption. The preferences of Chinese consumers were also changing. The case illustrates some problems luxury brands faced in China as the market matured and how environmental changes affect the marketing strategy of luxury brands. The case provides students the opportunity to suggest ways on how Gucci should move forward.

           Asia
    • Authors: Young-Choon Kim, Hyeonjin Cha, Taekyun Kim
      Pages: 311 - 346
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 311-346, December 2017.
Ahkera Smart Tech is a technology start-up specialized in baggage loading, a niche market of airport baggage handling system. Its robotics technology has great potential to revolutionize baggage loading by improving operational efficiency, accuracy and safety in the airport. As Ahkera brings its innovation to a global stage, the management team is keen on Asian markets. Aviation industry in Asia has observed exploding demand for air traffic, providing great market opportunities for Ahkera. As a non-Asian startup, Ahkera faces significant challenges in market penetration and global strategic management in order to ride on Asian opportunities.

  • Wipro Ltd.: The Demerger of Wipro Enterprises
    • Authors: Rajesh Haldipur, Vijaya Narapareddy, S. R. Vishwanath
      Pages: 347 - 375
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 347-375, December 2017.
In November 2012, Wipro Ltd., a NYSE listed IT Services company, announced its plan to demerge the non-IT businesses into an unlisted entity — Wipro Enterprises. The case highlights the governance, valuation, and ethical issues surrounding the demerger. Shareholders were given three options to choose from. But, in reality, they had no choice but to exchange Wipro Enterprises shares that they would receive after the demerger with Wipro Ltd shares because Wipro Enterprises would remain unlisted. The case asks the student to analyze the restructuring from an investor’s perspective. The case is especially interesting in that it provides a platform to discuss governance issues in the context of a familyowned public firm. It demonstrates how the preferences of majority shareholders can affect the wealth of minority shareholders.

  • SoftBank’s Acquisition of Sprint Nextel Corporation
    • Authors: Jae C. Jung, Xiaomei Grazia Xiong
      Pages: 377 - 392
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 377-392, December 2017.
This case illustrates the cultural challenges that SoftBank, a Japanese corporation, experienced in the M&A integration of Sprint Next Corporation, the third largest US wireless telecommunications carrier in 2015. In the mind of Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s maverick founder, the consolidation of SoftBank and Sprint was to create the world’s No. 1 company in the telecommunications industry. Although it seemed beneficial to SoftBank financially and strategically, differences in the business cultures of two corporations and countries where they were based raised concerns about the success of their integration. In addition to the cultural differences, SoftBank managers faced extra challenges from their Midwest counterparts through a series of changes in business strategies, marketing, human resources, and management since its acquisition of June 2013. How could SoftBank and Sprint increase the odds of success'

  • Corporate Social Responsibility in McDonald’s Australia
    • Authors: Alvin Lee, Claire Lambert
      Pages: 393 - 430
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 393-430, December 2017.
This case focuses on marketing public policy and legislation issues in the business environment. The Commonwealth Government of Australia wants to impose mandatory warning labels for fast-food served by quick-service chainrestaurants like McDonald’s. These warnings are to appear on fast-food packaging to warn diners of the possible harms arising from consuming fast-food. This is similar to the warnings that are used in Australia on tobacco product packages. This highlights a turning point where legislators appear to be heeding calls of vocal pressure groups to curb and legislate the industry’s activities. The loudest calls have appeared in well-publicized legal cases and film documentaries like Super-Size Me. McDonald’s has been well-aware of these challenges. The company continues to respond and fight legal challenges on these points. As a result, the company has improved its supply chain, employees’ work-conditions, their treatment of animals, their stores, food and customer service to offer leaner, healthier and more upmarket products. The few vocal critics who have secured media coverage seem to rely on sensationalizing the issue — e.g., eating McDonald’s for 30 days makes you fat. They seem to ignore the results from other experiments where people who ate suitable portions of McDonald’s food for the same 30 day period actually lost weight. Other challenges that have been found to be lies in courts of law include allegations of animal cruelty, unsafe food and food that makes people obese. Yet the public continue to believe these allegations. Can the industry do more, or do something different, to change people’s minds'

  • Nava Jyoti: Farmer’s Pursuit of Profitable Sales
    • Authors: Jeevan J. Arakal, Dinesh Sharma
      Pages: 431 - 451
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 431-451, December 2017.
Small and marginal farmers in India face several difficulties in selling produce due to their scale of production and related transaction costs. Aggregation of produce under the aegis of a producer organization is seen as a possible solution for improving market access. This case is about Nava Jyoti, a producer organization based in Odisha, India. Nava Jyoti received support from several institutions in the form of grants, soft loans and managerial handholding at the time of its inception. However, after a few years Nava Jyoti had incurred losses due to several internal and external factors affecting its sales operations. Building profitable sales operations was the key for farmers to stand on their own feet since grants and other institutional support would not flow indefinitely. The time had come to review the sales operations and take corrective steps, finding an optimal route to market strategy was the envisaged outcome of the review process. Solutions had to be relevant to the context and capabilities of Nava Jyoti’s members — small and marginal farmers in one of the poorest regions of the country.

  • Media Lab Asia: Renovating Business Model for Underserved
    • Authors: Subhash Kumar
      Pages: 453 - 474
Abstract: Asian Case Research Journal, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 453-474, December 2017.
Media Lab Asia (MLA) has been incepted in 2001 with the collaboration of MIT Media Lab and Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DEITY), Government of India. It is working on the paradigm of collaborative research from the lab to land in developing and operationalizing technologies to bridge the gap through educating, equipping and empowering common man. MLA is working in four sectors: livelihood, healthcare, empowerment of the disabled and education. MLA is successful in collaborating with Research & Development (R&D) organizations, institutions in Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academia and industry. A long list of collaborators of MLA includes 59 partner agencies. MLA role, however, had confined to provide funding to the partner agencies. The collaborative organization develops product, tests and launches the projects. The reach of the project touches major states in India. eGalla, Chic, mDhanwanthari, and Sehat-Saathi are some of the projects developed by MLA and collaborators. eGalla is a retail management software, and Chic is developed to simplify the traditional craft for livelihood generation. mDhanwanthari and Sehat-Saathi are based on healthcare to rural communities. MLA has developed 75 projects since its inception. The projects have reached the beneficiary but lack in scale and commercialization. The parameter of success for MLA includes the potential for commercialization of the products or projects and self-sustaining mechanism of the impact of these products and projects. There are not many obligations for commercial success being a Section 25 company; however, a self-sustaining mechanism was critical. DEITY, the parent organization, has sought external support to develop a new business model to overcome the limitation.
