  • Is it Worth the Effort?
    • Authors: Christian Meier; Dennis Kundisch; Jochen Willeke
      Pages: 81 - 95
Abstract: Abstract The adequate consideration of resource interactions among IS projects is a challenging but important requirement within IS project portfolio selection. However, the literature does not mention any potential techniques for the identification and assessment of resource interactions. Moreover, the literature has so far neglected the question of the trade-off between time and effort invested in identifying and evaluating resource interactions caused by resource sharing among projects, compared to the benefits derived from this procedure. Hence, the paper’s contribution is twofold. First, a technique to support the identification and evaluation of potentially economically relevant resource interactions is suggested. Second, the paper proposes a decision model that allows to calculate a theoretical upper bound for the amount of effort that should be invested in improving estimates for identified interactions as part of the portfolio planning process.

  • Service-Channel Fit Conceptualization and Instrument Development
    • Authors: Hartmut Hoehle; Thomas Kude; Sid Huff; Karl Popp
      Pages: 97 - 110
Abstract: Abstract Electronically mediated self-service technologies in the banking industry have impacted the way banks service consumers. Despite a large body of research on electronic banking channels, no study has been undertaken to empirically explore the fit between electronic banking channels and banking services. To address this gap, we developed and validated a service-channel fit conceptualization and an associated survey instrument. We applied a mixed methods approach and initially investigated industry experts’ perceptions regarding the concept of ‘service-channel fit’ (SCF). The findings demonstrated that the concept was highly valued by bank managers. Next, we developed an instrument to measure the perceived service-channel fit of electronic banking channels. The instrument was developed using expert rounds and two pretests involving approximately 300 consumers in New Zealand. Drawing on IS alignment literature, we created a parallel instrument allowing us to calculate SCF across three unique fit dimensions, including service complexity-channel fit, service importance-channel fit, and service routineness-channel fit. To explore the nomological validity of the SCF construct, we linked SCF to customers’ intention to use a specific channel for a particular banking task. We tested our model with data from 340 consumers in New Zealand using Internet banking applications for two different banking tasks. The results of our study have theoretical and practical implications for how clients should be serviced through electronically mediated banking channels.

  • Retained Organizations in IT Outsourcing
    • Authors: Marius Goldberg; Axel Kieninger; Gerhard Satzger; Hansjörg Fromm
      Pages: 111 - 124
Abstract: Abstract IT outsourcing is a strategic option which enables companies to focus on their core competencies. Over time however, many outsourcing arrangements suffer from severe problems. While the design of retained organizations is generally seen as a critical element, there is hardly any empirical evidence on how the choice of the organizational setup is linked to the occurrence of outsourcing management problems later on. In this work, a quantitative study across various outsourcing arrangements is used to identify the key outsourcing management problems and their interdependency with organizational attributes of retained organizations. It is shown that the key problems differ by outsourcing degree, and critical organizational attributes for each of these problems are unveiled. The paper’s objective is to enhance the design of retained organizations to enable more mature and successful outsourcing solutions as well as to provide foundations for future IS research.

  • Meta Modeling for Business Process Improvement
    • Abstract: Abstract Conducting business process improvement (BPI) initiatives is a topic of high priority for today’s companies. However, performing BPI projects has become challenging. This is due to rapidly changing customer requirements and an increase of inter-organizational business processes, which need to be considered from an end-to-end perspective. In addition, traditional BPI approaches are more and more perceived as overly complex and too resource-consuming in practice. Against this background, the paper proposes a BPI roadmap, which is an approach for systematically performing BPI projects and serves practitioners’ needs for manageable BPI methods. Based on this BPI roadmap, a domain-specific conceptual modeling method (DSMM) has been developed. The DSMM supports the efficient documentation and communication of the results that emerge during the application of the roadmap. Thus, conceptual modeling acts as a means for purposefully codifying the outcomes of a BPI project. Furthermore, a corresponding software prototype has been implemented using a meta modeling platform to assess the technical feasibility of the approach. Finally, the usability of the prototype has been empirically evaluated.

  • Eliciting and Modeling Business Process Stories
    • Authors: David Simões; Pedro Antunes; Luis Carriço
Abstract: Abstract Most business process modeling tools used today encourage the rendition of lean, prescribed and clearly coordinated activities, which often clash with far more intricate business realities. This paper evaluates an alternative approach that adopts concepts from storytelling and sense-making theories to elicit process stories. The viability of this approach is tested in a case study involving sixteen individuals from the same organization who tell their personal views about a business process, thus gathering a total of twenty process stories. The obtained results suggest that process stories may increase the meaningfulness, contextualization and overall richness of process models.

  • Guidelines for Education in Business and Information Systems Engineering
           at Tertiary Institutions
    • Authors: Reinhard Jung; Christiane Lehrer
Abstract: Abstract The paper presents guidelines for education in business and information systems engineering (BISE) at tertiary institutions, which were designed by a working group comprising domain experts, both from academia and practice. The guidelines contain the learning outcomes in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, in particular, the key subject-specific, social, and personal skills needed by BISE graduates. Moreover, corresponding occupational profiles, the specific skills required, as well as the essential and typical learning content for BISE education are described. Furthermore, detailed recommendations for the design of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees curricula and sub-curricula in BISE, business administration, and computer science, respectively, are provided. The presented guidelines serve several purposes. Providing common directions for BISE education is aiming to support personnel in charge of curriculum development and to assist students in program and career choice.

  • Solving Practical Railway Crew Scheduling Problems with Attendance Rates
    • Authors: Kirsten Hoffmann; Udo Buscher; Janis Sebastian Neufeld; Felix Tamke
Abstract: Abstract Arising from a practical problem in German rail passenger transport, a prototype for a multi-period railway crew scheduling problem with attendance rates for conductors is developed and evaluated in this paper. The consideration of attendance rates is of increasing importance in regional transport networks and requires decision support. For this purpose business analytics is applied in order to offer an approach to transform real-world data to concrete operational decision support (action). The focus here is on the analysis step using a new set covering model with several essential restrictions integrated for the first time. A hybrid column generation approach is applied, which solves the pricing problem by means of a genetic algorithm. The artifact is evaluated with the help of a case study of three real-world transport networks. It is shown that the hybrid solution approach is able to solve the problem more effectively and efficiently compared to conventional approaches used in practice.

  • On the Value and Challenge of Real-Time Information in Dynamic Dispatching
           of Service Vehicles
    • Authors: Marlin W. Ulmer; Leonard Heilig; Stefan Voß
Abstract: Abstract Ubiquitous computing technologies and information systems pave the way for real-time planning and management. In the process of dynamic vehicle dispatching, the adherent challenge is to develop decision support systems using real-time information in an appropriate quality and at the right moment in order to improve their value creation. As real-time information enables replanning at any point in time, the question arises when replanning should be triggered. Frequent replanning may lead to efficient routing decisions due to vehicles’ diversions from current routes while less frequent replanning may enable effective assignments due to gained information. In this paper, the authors analyze and quantify the impact of the three main triggers from the literature, exogenous customer requests, endogenous vehicle statuses, and replanning in fixed intervals, for a dynamic vehicle routing problem with stochastic service requests. To this end, the authors generalize the Markov-model of an established dynamic routing problem and embed the different replanning triggers in an existing anticipatory assignment and routing policy. They particularly analyze under which conditions each trigger is advantageous. The results indicate that fixed interval triggers are inferior and dispatchers should focus either on the exogenous customer process or the endogenous vehicle process. It is further shown that the exogenous trigger is advantageous for widely spread customers with long travel durations and few dynamic requests while the endogenous trigger performs best for many dynamic requests and when customers are accumulated in clusters.

  • Integrating Data Collection Optimization into Pavement Management Systems
    • Authors: Gabriel Bazi; John El Khoury; F. Jordan Srour
Abstract: Abstract This paper describes a method for using location data to optimize the routing of pavement data collection vehicles. In much of the developed world, pavement testing is performed on a regular basis; the pavement testing data, in turn, serves as input to Pavement Management Systems. Currently, in the United States of America, state departments of transportation plan this data collection work by providing the list of roads that must be tested and then leave the routing of the vehicles to the equipment operators who typically execute the work in an ad hoc manner. This study presents the processes required to code the list of roads for testing, select appropriate hotels in the region of testing, and apply a Traveling Salesman Problem with Hotel Stops model to derive a route. Applying the processes to a case study shows significant cost savings associated with this method of roadway testing, as opposed to the current ad hoc methods.
