  • Scheduling Flexible Demand in Cloud Computing Spot Markets
    • Abstract: The rapid standardization and specialization of cloud computing services have led to the development of cloud spot markets on which cloud service providers and customers can trade in near real-time. Frequent changes in demand and supply give rise to spot prices that vary throughout the day. Cloud customers often have temporal flexibility to execute their jobs before a specific deadline. In this paper, the authors apply real options analysis (ROA), which is an established valuation method designed to capture the flexibility of action under uncertainty. They adapt and compare multiple discrete-time approaches that enable cloud customers to quantify and exploit the monetary value of their short-term temporal flexibility. The paper contributes to the field by guaranteeing cloud job execution of variable-time requests in a single cloud spot market, whereas existing multi-market strategies may not fulfill requests when outbid. In a broad simulation of scenarios for the use of Amazon EC2 spot instances, the developed approaches exploit the existing savings potential up to 40 percent – a considerable extent. Moreover, the results demonstrate that ROA, which explicitly considers time-of-day-specific spot price patterns, outperforms traditional option pricing models and expectation optimization.

  • Performance Analysis and Enhancement of Deep Convolutional Neural Network
    • Abstract: Convolutional neural network has been widely investigated for machinery condition monitoring, but its performance is highly affected by the learning of input signal representation and model structure. To address these issues, this paper presents a comprehensive deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based condition monitoring framework to improve model performance. First, various signal representation techniques are investigated for better feature learning of the DCNN model by transforming the time series signal into different domains, such as the frequency domain, the time–frequency domain, and the reconstructed phase space. Next, the DCNN model is customized by taking into account the dimension of model, the depth of layers, and the convolutional kernel functions. The model parameters are then optimized by a mini-batch stochastic gradient descendent algorithm. Experimental studies on a gearbox test rig are utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of presented DCNN models, and the results show that the one-dimensional DCNN model with a frequency domain input outperforms the others in terms of fault classification accuracy and computational efficiency. Finally, the guidelines for choosing appropriate signal representation techniques and DCNN model structures are comprehensively discussed for machinery condition monitoring.

  • An Adaptive Scheduling Algorithm for Dynamic Jobs for Dealing with the
           Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem
    • Abstract: Modern manufacturing systems build on an effective scheduling scheme that makes full use of the system resource to increase the production, in which an important aspect is how to minimize the makespan for a certain production task (i.e., the time that elapses from the start of work to the end) in order to achieve the economic profit. This can be a difficult problem, especially when the production flow is complicated and production tasks may suddenly change. As a consequence, exact approaches are not able to schedule the production in a short time. In this paper, an adaptive scheduling algorithm is proposed to address the makespan minimization in the dynamic job shop scheduling problem. Instead of a linear order, the directed acyclic graph is used to represent the complex precedence constraints among operations in jobs. Inspired by the heterogeneous earliest finish time (HEFT) algorithm, the adaptive scheduling algorithm can make some fast adaptations on the fly to accommodate new jobs which continuously arrive in a manufacturing system. The performance of the proposed adaptive HEFT algorithm is compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms and further heuristic methods for minimizing the makespan. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed approach.

  • How Do Market Standards Inhibit the Enactment of Digital Capabilities'
    • Abstract: Digital capabilities can improve organizations’ performance by supporting complex decision-making processes. However, when market standards constrain their enactment, the potential benefits promised by digital capabilities do not realize. The paper explores this tension by means of the critical case of a European airline, which had difficulty to enact a novel pricing approach and finds that market standards are entrenched in the airline’s pricing and distribution ecosystem. This causes the organization to focus on local improvements and IT-based workarounds instead of enacting a dramatically new and potentially improved digital pricing capability.

  • The New Era of Business Intelligence Applications: Building from a
           Collaborative Point of View
    • Abstract: Collaborative business intelligence (BI) is widely embraced by enterprises as a way of making the most of their business processes. However, decision makers usually work in isolation without the knowledge or the time needed to obtain and analyze all the available information for making decisions. Unfortunately, collaborative BI is currently based on exchanging e-mails and documents between participants. As a result, information may be lost, participants may become disoriented, and the decision-making task may not yield the needed results. The authors propose a modeling language aimed at modeling and eliciting the goals and information needs of participants of collaborative BI systems. This approach is based on innovative methods to elicit and model collaborative systems and BI requirements. A controlled experiment was performed to validate this language, assessing its understandability, scalability, efficiency, and user satisfaction by analyzing two collaborative BI systems. By using the framework proposed in this work, clear guideless can be provided regarding: (1) collaborative tasks, (2) their participants, and (3) the information to be shared among them. By using the approach to design collaborative BI systems, practitioners may easily trace every element needed in the decision processes, avoiding the loss of information and facilitating the collaboration of the stakeholders of such processes.

  • Towards Digital Transformation in Fashion Retailing: A Design-Oriented IS
Research Study of Automated Checkout Systems
    • Abstract: Automated checkout systems promise greater sales due to an improved customer experience and cost savings because less store personnel is needed. The present design-oriented IS research study is concerned with an automated checkout solution in fashion retail stores. The implementation of such a cyberphysical system in established retail environments is challenging as architectural constraints, well-established customer processes, and customer expectations regarding privacy and convenience impose limits on system design. To overcome these challenges, the authors design an IT artifact that leverages an RFID sensor infrastructure and software components (data processing and prediction routines) to jointly address the central problems of detecting purchases in a reliable and timely fashion and assigning these purchases to individual shopping baskets. The system is implemented and evaluated in a research laboratory under real-world conditions. The evaluation indicates that shopping baskets can indeed be detected reliably (precision and recall rates greater than 99%) and in an expeditious manner (median detection time of 1.03 s). Moreover, purchase assignment reliability is 100% for most standard scenarios but falls to 42% in the most challenging scenario.

  • Service-Dominant Business Model Design for Digital Innovation in Smart
    • Abstract: In many business domains, rapid changes have occurred as a consequence of digital innovation, i.e., the application of novel information technologies to achieve specific business goals. A domain where digital innovation has great potential is smart mobility, which aims at moving around large sets of people and goods in a specific geographic setting in an efficient and effective way. So far, many innovations in this domain have concentrated on relatively isolated, technology-driven developments, such as smart route planning for individual travelers. Nice as they are, they have relatively small impact on mobility on a large scale. To achieve substantial digital innovations – for example, optimizing commuting on a city-scale – it is necessary to align the efforts and related values of a spectrum of stakeholders that need to collaborate in a common business model. To this aim, the study proposes the use of service-dominant business logic, which emphasizes the interaction of value network partners as they co-create value through collaborative processes. Moving to this paradigm has significant implications on the way business is done: the business requirements for services will change faster, and the complexity of value networks required to meet these requirements will increase further. This requires new approaches to business engineering that are grounded in the premises of service-dominant logic. The paper introduces the service-dominant business model radar (SDBM/R) as an integral component of a business engineering framework. Following a design science approach, the SDBM/R has been developed in close collaboration with industry experts and evaluated through an extensive series of hands-on workshops with industry professionals from several business domains. This paper focuses on the application and evaluation in the smart mobility domain, addressing the design of new business models for digital innovation of collaborative transport of people and goods. In summary, it contributes a novel business design approach that has an academic background and relevant practical embedding.

  • Scenario-Based Design Theorizing
    • Abstract: As ever more companies encourage employees to innovate, a surplus of ideas has become reality in many organizations – often exceeding the available resources to execute them. Building on insights from a literature review and a 3-year collaboration with a banking software provider, the paper suggests a Digital Idea Screening Cockpit (DISC) to address this challenge. Following a design science research approach, it suggests a prescriptive design theory that provides practitioner-oriented guidance for implementing a DISC. The study shows that, in order to facilitate the assessment, selection, and tracking of ideas for different stakeholders, such a system needs to play a dual role: It needs to structure decision criteria and at the same be flexible to allow for creative expression. Moreover, the paper makes a case for scenario-based design theorizing by developing design knowledge via scenarios.

  • Design Principles for Systematic Search Systems: A Holistic Synthesis of a
Rigorous Multi-cycle Design Science Research Journey
    • Abstract: Rigorous systematic literature searches are often described as complex, error-prone and time-consuming because of a prevailing lack of adequate technological assistance. Nonetheless, one of the first steps when conducting a rigorous literature review is finding an appropriate literature sample. The quality of this literature sample is an important factor for the overall quality of the literature review. This article investigates how to design innovative IT systems that effectively facilitate systematic literature searches. Applying the design science research paradigm, the research method consists of multiple design cycles of artifact development, evaluation, and refinement. In doing so, six design principles are derived that intend to increase the comprehensiveness, precision, and reproducibility of systematic literature searches. The results could be helpful for research and practice. The derived design knowledge builds a foundation for future research on systematic search systems and enables new methodological contributions. The results could also guide the development of innovative search systems and features that, eventually, increase the quality and efficiency of information accumulation in different contexts.

  • Engineering of Augmented Reality-Based Information Systems
    • Abstract: The development of augmented reality glasses is still ongoing and faces barriers in diffusion and concerns about their impact on users, organizations and society. The study aims to find sufficient solutions for this struggling digital innovation and to provide guidance for the implementation of augmented reality glasses in design-oriented projects. During a 3-year consortium research, acceptance and privacy have been identified as major phenomena that influence the adoption of augmented reality glasses in the logistics domain. To forge ahead digital innovation research, the focus of the presented research lies on the diffusion of this technology with design knowledge for the development of augmented reality glasses-based systems. Evidence and artifacts contribute to the still limited knowledge of system design based on augmented reality glasses from a domain-specific instantiation and an implementation framework.

  • A Reinforcement Learning Based Model for Adaptive Service Quality
           Management in E-Commerce Websites
    • Abstract: Providing high-quality service to all users is a difficult and inefficient strategy for e-commerce providers, especially when Web servers experience overload conditions that cause increased response time and request rejections, leading to user frustration and reduced revenue. In an e-commerce system, customer Web sessions have differing values for service providers. These tend to: give preference to customer Web sessions that are likely to bring more profit by providing better service quality. This paper proposes a reinforcement-learning based adaptive e-commerce system model that adapts the service quality level for different Web sessions within the customer’s navigation in order to maximize total profit. The e-commerce system is considered as an electronic supply chain which includes a network of basic e- providers used to supply e-commerce services for end customers. The learner agent noted as e-commerce supply chain manager (ECSCM) agent allocates a service quality level to the customer’s request based on his/her navigation pattern in the e-commerce Website and selects an optimized combination of service providers to respond to the customer’s request. To evaluate the proposed model, a multi agent framework composed of three agent types, the ECSCM agent, customer agent (buyer/browser) and service provider agent, is employed. Experimental results show that the proposed model improves total profits through cost reduction and revenue enhancement simultaneously and encourages customers to purchase from the Website through service quality adaptation.
