  • Security Requirements Elicitation from Airline Turnaround Processes
    • Authors: Raimundas Matulevičius; Alex Norta; Silver Samarütel
      Pages: 3 - 20
Abstract: Security risk management is an important part of system development. Given that a majority of modern organizations rely heavily on information systems, security plays a big part in ensuring smooth operations of business processes. For example, many people rely on e-services offered by banks and medical establishments. Inadequate security measures in information systems have unwanted effects on an organization’s reputation and on people’s lives. This case study paper targets the secure system development problem by suggesting the application of security requirements elicitation from business processes (SREBP). This approach provides business analysts with means to elicit and introduce security requirements to business processes through the application of the security risk-oriented patterns (SRPs). These patterns help find security risk occurrences in business processes and present mitigations for these risks. At the same time, they reduce the efforts needed for risk analysis. In this paper, the authors report their experience to derive security requirements for mitigating security risks in the distributed airline turnaround systems.

  • Modeling Simultaneous Cooperation and Competition Among Enterprises
    • Authors: Vik Pant; Eric Yu
      Pages: 39 - 54
Abstract: Coopetition (simultaneous cooperation and competition) between organizations has emerged as a prominent and critical industrial practice that allows organizations to increase combined welfare through cooperation while maximizing individual gains through competition. The formulation and enactment of such an organizational strategy entails designing and operating information systems that maximize benefits while minimizing costs from concomitant cooperation and competition. Coopetition raises new concerns and considerations about the design of data, processes, and interfaces of information systems. Analyzing coopetition can be challenging since cooperation and competition are paradoxical social behaviors that are undergirded by contradictory logics, hypotheses, and assumptions. Therefore, the ability of decision-makers to represent and reason about coopetition in a structured and systematic manner can be beneficial as it can support their efforts to co-design organizational strategies and information systems. This paper presents insights about the initial stages of an exploratory research project that is focused on the development of a modeling framework to support representation and reasoning of interorganizational coopetitive strategies. The objectives of this paper are to outline the goals of this research project which include: (1) identifying the primary characteristics for modeling and analyzing coopetitive relationships, as well as (2) proposing artefacts for expressing and evaluating these relationships.

  • Simulation-Based Research in Information Systems
    • Authors: Jannis Beese; M. Kazem Haki; Stephan Aier; Robert Winter
Abstract: Simulations provide a useful methodological approach for studying the behavior of complex socio-technical information systems (IS), in which humans and IT artifacts interact to process information. However, the use of simulations is relatively new in IS research and the current presence and impact of simulation-based studies is still limited. Furthermore, simulation-based research is quite different from other approaches, making it difficult to position and evaluate it adequately. Therefore, this paper first analyses the epistemic particularities of simulation-based IS research. Based on this analysis, a structured literature review of the status quo of simulation-based IS research was conducted, to understand how IS scholars currently employ simulation. A comparison of the epistemic particularities of simulation-based research with its status quo in IS literature allows to critically examine epistemic inferences in the respective research process. The results provide guidance for prospective simulation-based IS research through discussing the theory-based derivation of simulation models, as well as different simulation techniques, validation techniques, and simulation uses.

  • Decision Support for the Automotive Industry
    • Authors: Christoph Gleue; Dennis Eilers; Hans-Jörg von Mettenheim; Michael H. Breitner
Abstract: In the automotive industry, it is very common for new vehicles to be leased rather than sold. This implies forecasting an accurate residual value for the vehicles, which is a major factor for determining monthly leasing rates. Either a systematic overestimation or underestimation of future residual values can incur large potential losses in resale value or, respectively, competitive disadvantages. For the purpose of facilitating residual value related management decisions, an operative decision support system is introduced with emphasis on its forecasting capabilities. In the paper, the use of artificial neural networks for this application is demonstrated in a case study based on more than 250,000 data sets of leasing contracts from a major German car manufacturer, completed between 2011 and 2017. The importance of determining price factors and the effect of different time horizons on forecasting accuracy are investigated and practical implications are discussed. In addition, the authors neither found a significant explanatory nor predictive power of external economic factors, which underlines the importance of collecting and taking advantage of vehicle-specific data or, in more general terms, the exclusive data of corporations, which is often only available internally.

  • Recombinant Service Systems Engineering
    • Authors: Daniel Beverungen; Hedda Lüttenberg; Verena Wolf
Abstract: Although many methods have been proposed for engineering service systems and customer solutions, most of these approaches give little consideration to recombinant service innovation. Recombinant innovation refers to reusing and integrating resources that were previously unconnected. In an age of networked products and data, we can expect that many service innovations will be based on adding, dissociating, and associating existing value propositions by accessing internal and external resources instead of designing them from scratch. The purpose of this paper is to identify if current service engineering approaches account for the mechanisms of recombinant innovation and to design a method for recombinant service systems engineering. In a conceptual analysis of 24 service engineering methods, the study identified that most methods (1) focus on designing value propositions instead of service systems, (2) view service independent of physical goods, (3) are either linear or iterative instead of agile, and (4) do not sufficiently address the mechanisms of recombinant innovation. The paper discusses how these deficiencies can be remedied and designs a revised service systems engineering approach that reorganizes service engineering processes according to four design principles. The method is demonstrated with the recombinant design of a service system for predictive maintenance of agricultural machines.

  • The Price of Privacy
    • Authors: Annika Baumann; Johannes Haupt; Fabian Gebert; Stefan Lessmann
Abstract: The analysis of clickstream data facilitates the understanding and prediction of customer behavior in e-commerce. Companies can leverage such data to increase revenue. For customers and website users, on the other hand, the collection of behavioral data entails privacy invasion. The objective of the paper is to shed light on the trade-off between privacy and the business value of customer information. To that end, the authors review approaches to convert clickstream data into behavioral traits, which we call clickstream features, and propose a categorization of these features according to the potential threat they pose to user privacy. The authors then examine the extent to which different categories of clickstream features facilitate predictions of online user shopping patterns and approximate the marginal utility of using more privacy adverse information in behavioral prediction models. Thus, the paper links the literature on user privacy to that on e-commerce analytics and takes a step toward an economic analysis of privacy costs and benefits. In particular, the results of empirical experimentation with large real-world e-commerce data suggest that the inclusion of short-term customer behavior based on session-related information leads to large gains in predictive accuracy and business performance, while storing and aggregating usage behavior over longer horizons has comparably less value.

  • Dynamic Activities for Managing an IS-Enabled Organizational Change
    • Authors: Taru Salmimaa; Riitta Hekkala; Samuli Pekkola
Abstract: The interpretive grounded theory (GT) study analyses information system (IS) enabled organizational change in two private sector organizations. These two organizations, who are long term partners, were developing a new IS product to divergent markets. The data was gathered through 15 interviews, conducted at the phase of initial rollouts. The findings focus on the results of the theoretical coding phase in which selective codes, referred to as change management activities, are related to each other. As a theoretical contribution, the dynamic structure presents how the change management activities appear differently, depending on a set of choices. Several paradoxical situations stemmed from inconsistencies and/or tensions, because the choices did not support the targeted change management activities. The study thus proposes that there is an increasing demand to analyze the sources of paradoxical situations. Paradoxical situations in these five opposing forces were identified: long term vs. short term, macro vs. micro, past vs. future, centralized vs. distributed, and control vs. trust/self-organization. Some paradoxical situations arose because of the nature of the trust-based IS partnership, while others were socially constructed as a result of unintended consequences of actions in relation to the strategic goals. Managerial efforts are increasingly required for identifying paradoxical situations at an early stage and for considering the right balance for the opposing forces in the dynamic IS change process.

  • Process Modeling Recommender Systems
    • Authors: Michael Fellmann; Dirk Metzger; Sven Jannaber; Novica Zarvic; Oliver Thomas
Abstract: The manual construction of business process models is a time-consuming, error-prone task and presents an obstacle to business agility. To facilitate the construction of such models, several modeling support techniques have been suggested. However, while recommendation systems are widely used, e.g., in e-commerce, these techniques are rarely implemented in process modeling tools. The creation of such systems is a complex task since a large number of requirements and parameters have to be taken into account. In order to improve the situation, the authors have developed a data model that can serve as a backbone for the development of process modeling recommender systems (PMRS). This article outlines the systematic development of this model in a stepwise approach using established requirements and validates it against a data model that has been reverse-engineered from a real-world system. In a last step, the paper illustrates an exemplary instantiation of the data model in a Smart Glasses-based modeling environment and discusses business process agility issues. The authors expect their contribution to provide a useful starting point for designing the data perspective of process modeling recommendation features that support business agility in process-intensive environments.

  • From Expert Discipline to Common Practice: A Vision and Research Agenda
for Extending the Reach of Enterprise Modeling
    • Authors: Kurt Sandkuhl; Hans-Georg Fill; Stijn Hoppenbrouwers; John Krogstie; Florian Matthes; Andreas Opdahl; Gerhard Schwabe; Ömer Uludag; Robert Winter
Abstract: The benefits of enterprise modeling (EM) and its contribution to organizational tasks are largely undisputed in business and information systems engineering. EM as a discipline has been around for several decades but is typically performed by a limited number of people in organizations with an affinity to modeling. What is captured in models is only a fragment of what ought to be captured. Thus, this research note argues that EM is far from its maximum potential. Many people develop some kind of model in their local practice without thinking about it consciously. Exploiting the potential of this “grass roots modeling” could lead to groundbreaking innovations. The aim is to investigate integration of the established practices of modeling with local practices of creating and using model-like artifacts of relevance for the overall organization. The paper develops a vision for extending the reach of EM, identifies research areas contributing to the vision and proposes elements of a future research agenda.

  • Methodology for the Implementation of Knowledge Management Systems 2.0
    • Authors: Sergio Orenga-Roglá; Ricardo Chalmeta
Abstract: Web 2.0 and Big Data tools can be used to develop knowledge management systems based on facilitating the participation and collaboration of people in order to enhance knowledge. The paper presents a methodology that can help organizations with the use of Web 2.0 and Big Data tools to discover, gather, manage and apply their knowledge by making the process of implementing a knowledge management system faster and simpler. First, an initial version of the methodology was developed and it was then applied to an oil and gas company in order to analyze and refine it. The results obtained show the effectiveness of the methodology, since it helped this company to carry out the implementation quickly and effectively, thereby allowing the company to gain the maximum benefits from existing knowledge.

  • Enabling Normalized Systems in Practice – Exploring a Modeling
           Approach
    • Authors: Peter De Bruyn; Herwig Mannaert; Jan Verelst; Philip Huysmans
Abstract: Contemporary organizations are required to adapt to a changing environment in an agile way, which is often deemed very challenging. Normalized Systems (NS) theory attempts to build highly evolvable software systems by using systems theory as its theoretical underpinning. A modeling method which supports the identification of the NS elements, required for building NS sofware in practice, is currently missing. Therefore, the paper introduces an approach for creating both data models and processing models in the context of NS, as well as their integration. It is discussed how these models can be taken as the input for the actual creation of evolutionary prototypes by using an earlier developed supporting tool. The modeling approach and its suitability for feeding the tool are evaluated to discover their current strengths and weaknesses.
