  • Competition and Privatisation Policies in a Differentiated Mixed
           Oligopoly: The Pay-off-interdependence Approach
    • Authors: Yasuhiko Nakamura
Abstract: I revisit the relationship between competition and privatisation policies in a mixed oligopoly with differentiated goods, following the pay-off-interdependence approach in the fashion of Matsumura and Okamura. We find that although the intensity of market competition increases with the degree of importance of each firm’s relative performance, the optimal degree of privatisation can decrease in a differentiated goods mixed oligopoly in both the increasing marginal costs case and the constant marginal costs case. Further, given the degree of importance of each firm’s relative performance and the number of private firms, we find that the optimal degree of privatisation can decrease as the degree of product differentiation declines. Finally, by considering an alternative-pay-off model in both cases, we compare the optimal degree of privatisation of the public firm.

  • Equilibrium Analysis of A Dual-CHannel Supply Chain Under Different Market
           Powers
    • Authors: Chunhua Tang; Shujin Zhu, Erbao Cao
Abstract: We examine the effect of firms’ market powers on the optimal strategies and profits of partners and make comparisons under different structures in a dual-channel supply chain, where the manufacturer provide a value-added service to differentiate the product for the customer to some extent. We consider centralised decision and decentralised decision cases where supply chain partners have different market power structures, including the Manufacturer-Stackelberg, Retailer-Stackelberg and Nash Game. We find that the direct sale price and added value are unchanged under different power structures. However, dominating power structures always lead to inefficiency for the whole dual-channel supply chain. The more power one of the channel partners has, the larger profit loss the whole supply chain will suffer.

  • The Innovation-R&D Nexus in an Emerging Economy: Evidence from the
           Indian Manufacturing Sector
    • Authors: Sunil Kanwar; Shailu Singh
Abstract: While R&D is considered an important input for innovation, its relationship with the output of the innovation process continues to remain enigmatic, especially in developing countries with low levels of domestic research. Using patents and knowledge capital stock as proxies for the output and input of the innovation process, we study their nexus in the emerging economy of India using a large sample of manufacturing firms over the period 2001–2010. Using a specification that addresses the problem of ‘excess zeroes’ in count data, the firm's non-technical knowledge stock as an additional factor of the success with which R&D transforms into patents, and a linear feedback mechanism that yields consistent estimators, we find that a one unit increase in knowledge capital likely raises expected patent count by only about 4.3% at most. Further, although patenting experience, resource access and knowledge spillovers are strongly significant in explaining patent counts, the magnitude of these effects is marginal at best. In brief, evidence for the knowledge production function is rather weak even in the context of a dynamic developing economy.

  • Fundamentals and Oil Price Behaviour: New Evidence from Co-integration
Tests with Structural Breaks and Granger Causality Tests
    • Authors: Nourah Al-Yousef
Abstract: As the world economy has undergone various changes and shocks, the oil market went through significant fluctuations during the period 1994–2015. This study focuses on discussing the possible factors that determine crude oil prices, which include world economic growth, market power of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), non-OPEC supply and the value of dollar, taking into account the structural changes that influence the study period, which is quarterly data for the period of 1994.Q1–2015.Q3. For time series stationarity tests, Zivot and Andrews (1992) and Perron (1997) unit root test with structural break is used. To test the existence of a long relationship in the presence of structural changes, the Gregory and Hansen (1996a, 1996b) method of co-integration is used. For long-run coefficient, we proceed to estimate fully modified least squares. The result shows a significant influence of non-OPEC supply, the dollar appreciation and world gross domestic product growth, but OPEC did not have a significant effect on the price of oil, which is indicated by the structural break for OPEC capacity utilisation at 2002.Q1, that indicates the starting point of the loss of OPEC power. Establishing the presence of co-integration, we apply the evaluation of Granger causality for co-integrated data, using vector error-correction model.

  • Comparing Horizontal Mergers Under Cournot with Bertrand Competitions
    • Authors: Pu-yan Nie
Abstract: Taking the product substitutability into account, this paper considers the horizontal mergers under Cournot with Bertrand competition. Firstly, the big market size indicates non-intention to merge. Secondly, independent goods indicate indifferences between the quantity competition and price competition. Finally, firms under quantity competition are more willing to merge than under price competition. The antitrust authority is more inclined to approve the merger under quantity competition than that under price competition.

  • Inflation and the Dispersion of Relative Prices: A Case for 4 % Solution
    • Authors: Sartaj Rasool Rather; Raja Sethu Durai, Muthia Ramachandran
Abstract: Unlike earlier literature that documented positive association between inflation and the dispersion of relative prices over time, the empirical evidence from this study suggests that the relative price dispersion increases in response to the deviation of inflation from certain threshold/target level in either direction rather than inflation per se. The striking feature of the empirical evidence from United States and Japan is that the inflation rate at which the dispersion of relative prices is minimised turn out to be 4%; hence, supporting the proposal of 4% inflation target for both the countries.

  • Product Quality With Heterogeneous Consumers and Linear Pricing
    • Authors: Hugh Sibly
Abstract: This paper considers a linear-pricing monopolist that conducts vertical product differentiation. Previous analyses consider customers who either have unit demand or firms who conduct nonlinear pricing. In this paper, customers’ opportunity cost of time generates a demand for quality. Customers differ in either their demand, income or taste for quality. Differences in income and taste for quality are sources of vertical differentiation. The presence of quality distortion and the variety that may exhibit it are dependent on the functional form of the customer types’ demand.

  • Endogenous Timing in Mixed Duopolies With Externality
    • Authors: Toshihiro Matsumura; Akira Ogawa
Abstract: We investigate endogenous timing in a mixed duopoly with a negative externality. We find that quantity (price) competition yields a simultaneous-move (sequential-move) outcome under a significant negative externality. These results indicate that mixed duopolies yield the same results as private duopolies under a significant negative externality, which is in sharp contrast to the results in mixed duopolies without a negative externality. Unless the negative externality is insignificant, public leadership yields greater welfare than private leadership, and public leadership is more robust than the private leadership as equilibrium. If optimal environmental tax policy is introduced, however, private leadership yields the greatest welfare and this an equilibrium outcome in the endogenous timing game under quantity competition.

  • A Note on Optimal Industrial Policy Towards Bertrand Homogeneous Duopoly
    • Authors: Qi Duan; Jie Ma
Abstract: Recent studies in strategic trade and industrial policy analysis suggest that an investment subsidy, in the form of an R&D subsidy, a capacity subsidy or an advertising subsidy, would be a robust industrial policy recommendation towards an international differentiated oligopoly. However, in this paper, we show that this result does not carry over to the case of a Bertrand homogeneous duopoly. This result together with the fact that the optimal industrial policy is to set an investment subsidy when in product market competition firms play a Cournot output game, imply immediately that there hardly exists a robust industrial policy recommendation towards homogeneous goods industries.

  • Effect of the Tax System ON R&D Intensity, Growth, Wages and
           Consumption Share
    • Authors: Óscar Afonso; Ana Maria Bandeira, Manuela Magalhães
Abstract: We propose a general equilibrium knowledge-driven (semi-)endogenous-growth model with horizontal R&D, which is extended to consider two types of labour, skilled and unskilled, and exogenous government expenditure, financed through taxes on financial assets and on labour income, to analyse the implications of the tax system on R&D intensity, economic growth, wage inequality and consumption share in the output. In particular, we show that: (i) taxes have negative influence in the consumption share, being higher the marginal effect of the labour-income tax; (ii) for any given government expenditure share, an increase (a decrease) in financial-assets tax decreases (increases) the labour-income tax; (iii) only the financial-assets tax affects negatively the R&D intensity and the skill-premium; thus, to reduce the skill-premium the financial-assets tax must increase; (iv) ignoring the effect on wage inequality and on R&D intensity, taxes are substitutes.
