  • La Oralidad, los ecos en el Tiempo

    • Authors: Vicente Robinson Echevarría
Abstract: The oral tradition is deeply rooted in the country, the monumental work of religions coming from Africa were transmitted through orality. Starting from word, people leave their witness that passed down from generation to generation through time, real stories, legends, tales, and myths are transmitted and re-created even by time, receiving relevance in the popular imaginary. The community of Surgidero de Batabanó has been included in this practice. There are several stories about it with central core, other fantastic based on the imagination and the popular belief. The contribution re-creates three stories that have been told in the community since the first years of the last century (XX), that have been heard in the homely silence, during the winter nights when families gather and bring out the same. The stories by Juan Oliven, la Familia Fontanel and Policarpo Sandoval are told in this manner. They originate from stories told from the local black universe, given that their characters are black people, in which they expose their misfortune, beliefs, discriminations and spoliation to which were submitted old slaves and their descendent, practices really common and discriminated in that period. Three stories are described (even though they are not the only ones in the community), we analyze the social-historical context in which they spread, the consequences of the actions described and the contribution that the same bring to the traditional, popular culture and the oral tales as community practice.

  • Emancipación o Metamorfosis: Consecuencia postcolonial de la Trata
           Negrera de la Esclavitud

    • Authors: Nelson Aboy Domingo
Abstract: The postcolonial emancipation in Africa implies the insertion of ethnos elements into the dominant cultural system. The slaves rescued by the British Navy during the legal Trade were multiple and dissimilar to between them concentrated in coastal cities that can not subsist in particular minorities, also, the need for social integration; and they were, in turn, incompatible and incompetent in the face of British and learned culture. The British were schooled in English and converted to Christianity, as part of the “civilizing” process. So, they substituted each and every one of their diverse cultural and religious identities, for an ethnocultural colonial invention, that granted official weight and that since then was denominated: Yoruba, to all the emancipated ones concentrated in the British colonial demarcation of Yorubaland (Yoruba Earth). Because of the relevance and egocentrism that the official British discourse of the time gave to this fallacy of the African indigenous tradition, in the last decades (1980-2010) it has migrated to America and other latitudes, for the purpose of a new colonization of the cultural identities of African antecedents that are conserved in the African-American diasporas and, paradoxically, they call themselves: Yoruba traditionalists, as false bearers of the oldest autochthonous traditions of the original ancestral cultures. The present material tries to locate historical facts and events that clarify the colonial origin of this human conglomerate, which call themselves Yorubas; at the same time, to demonstrate that they are only carriers of the egocentric and colonizing pattern of cultural thought, which since then they inherited from the metamorphosis they suffered, rather than from a real emancipation and conservation of their ancestral cultures.

  • ¿De quién es la falta de ética del mayor o del
           iniciado'

    • Authors: María Vicenta Borges Bartutis
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to illustrate the current reality of the Ocha-Ifá Rule in Cuba, which is characterized by the diversity mediated by modernity, which together with other social factors and syncretism identifies a social problem originated, in principle, by the circumstance in which the Spanish white man arrived in Cuba, the way in which he brought the African black and the conditions in which he kept him enslaved; nevertheless, the new reality, black, with skill and wisdom preserves and protects their traditions, their culture. Thus, the expansion of the primary oral transmission of African culture begins in the process of “transculturation”; At present, despite the survival of this religious practice, the modern trend has changed the coexistence between the branches and the actions of practitioners, who with the intention of making their actions prevail, set excessive prices for the established ritual ceremonies. Or they constantly violate duties and rights, thus deforming what is stipulated in the Ocha-Ifá Rule. The above is the result of the «boom» of the Ocha-Ifá Rule «Santería»; event that, sometimes for some implies a fashion and for others the spirituality of the practitioner, which differs from the ethics, respect and confidence of the believer in his practice, therefore the contrast in Cuba between the historical moment is questioned lived by those who preceded us; the silent, discreet scenario in which, for various reasons, they guarded the religion and the current context in which the Ocha-Ifá Rule is practiced.

  • Esculturas africanas de Chile: lecturas de un patrimonio nacional en el
           escenario de la diferencia cultural

    • Authors: Javiera Antonia Carmona Jiménez
Abstract: Since 1930 the Chilean sculptural heritage has a set of African sculptures that belonged to the avant-garde poet Vicente Huidobro. The foundational temporality of this heritage is examined, understood as the contexts of initial collection of the pieces within the framework of the European avant-gardes, the acquisition by the Chilean State and the first exhibition of the pieces by the National Museum of Fine Arts of Chile. The revision of this first temporality links the work and ideology of Huidobro with his sculptures and with the construction of knowledge and ideas about the cultural difference affirmed and expressed by state museums attuned to the legacy of European colonialism in Latin America and the emancipatory artistic and political movements, critical of Eurocentrism of the elites. This stage of the patrimonialization process of the African sculptures that finally became Chilean sculptural heritage, reveals the state museums as legitimate agents of the symbolic dispute for the construction of patrimonial sense around the cultural diversity. This challenge of the museums is relevant in the current Chilean context of the XXI century of intensification of the migratory flows that confront the Chilean society with itself before “the black”, “the afro”, “the other”.

  • Remanentes socio-históricos y culturales de la esclavitud urbana en el
           centro Histórico La Habana Vieja

    • Authors: Inaury Portuondo Cárdenas
Abstract: Transatlantic slavery as a process has been stereotyped in many bibliographies emphasizing plantation slavery. However, urban slavery and its characteristics are always overlapping “under the city’s comfort” that the owners could offer. In the Havana Historic Center, this view has a great impact on the history, culture and development of a city close to its 500th anniversary. However, the optimal visualization and socialization of the subject with its just historical treatment has been a debt for the management of heritage in terms of the slave theme. The architectural potentialities, popular traditions and other expressing that exist in Old Havana, has its genesis in the period of slavery in Cba. However, repeated discourses polarize only African-based religious practices as the most transcendental legacy of Africans to Havana and Cuban culture. To approach the historical elements related to urban slavery, to Africans and descendants as active subjects in the formation of a transculturated society; it confirms how cultural resistance was the most effective weapon from black people. This article systematically links the contributions made by previous investigations regarding urban slavery and as a contribution the sites related to this trend that persist as witnesses in an old and rich city stand out.

  • Potencialidad de la inclusión del arte en el ámbito comunitario como
herramienta de transformación social en Argentina

    • Authors: Maia Berzel
Abstract: This article is about experiences that exist in Argentina in the community area and that we think as part of a scientific field called Art and Transformation field. It is composed by different experiences made by different organizations and organisms, that as a way to achieve social transformation, include art in the community work because they think it´s inclusion has great potential. They work with new conceptions about art, where it is considered at the same time as a way and a gold (not only an instrument to achieve other objectives). They work with different artistic languages (music, circus, visual arts, drama, dance, among others) and, in general, in precarious contexts. It´s a field that is not very studied, but there are some works about it that we will take in consideration in this article. That´s why the objective of this work would be to conceptualize and describe the art and transformation field and some of the characteristics of the work that the experiences that compose the field use. We will take contributions from different disciplines in which we based our investigation: social and cultural anthropology, community psychology, communication, popular education, among others.

  • Procesos interculturales y decolonialidad. En memoria de Leyda Oquendo
“una trayectoria por el derecho humano al conocimiento de la verdad
           histórica”...

    • Authors: Giovanna Campani
Abstract: Starting from the idea – expressed by Claude Lévi-Strauss and Tzvetan Todorov – that cultures do not evolve if it is not through contacts and that intercultural is constitutive of culture, the paper analyzes the specificity of intercultural relations after the Renaissance and the European expansion in the world, marked by colonialism, which coincided with the development of a modern capitalist system and the ideology of the race. The second part of the paper analyzes the development of post-colonial studies, which focused the critical analysis of colonial discourse and the valorisation of the struggles of the dominated populations in the process of decolonization. In Latin America, in the last few years, de-colonial thought has defined the colonization of being, together with the colonization of power and knowledge, opening the way to a radical critique of Eurocentrism and its identification abusive with the universal. All the work of Leyda Oquendo that this special issue of Comparative Cultural Studies, remembers ten years after his death, was oriented in that direction.
