  • Beginning Teacher Induction Practices in the Context of Large Classes

    • Authors: Maria Victoria C. Hermosisima, Jerick C Ferrer, Arthur S Abulencia
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Most of the challenges faced by new teachers are connected to the inherent weaknesses of the public school system; lack of and congested classrooms; and not enough textbooks, instructional materials, and equipment. The challenges experienced by new teachers in the public school, specifically in dealing with student differences, are related to their being new to the public education system and to the urban setting. This study looked into the support given to new teachers of three schools from three Divisions of National Capital Region, that topped the National Achievement Test for 2013 and 2014. Data were gathered through the use of two validated sets of semi-structured interview guide. Results showed that handling large classes, student differences, and classroom management were the greatest challenges experienced by the new teachers. Training, school-initiated programs, and support from colleagues were mainly the form of support given. The study recommended that the Department of Education of the Philippines should consider the institutionalization of Induction Program for new teachers in the public schools, specifically addressing the unique needs, especially those related to large classes, of beginning teachers who have no experience in the professional teaching and transferees from private schools and the provinces.KEY WORDS: Beginning Teachers; Teacher Induction; Public School System; Large Classes; Professional Teaching.    About the

  • Research and Development of an Elementary School Teacher’s Guide for
Supporting Student-in-Transition Adaptation into Indonesian Educational
           System

    • Authors: Yulia Hapsari, Hamamah Hamamah, Yana Shanti Manipuspika
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This study is proposed to find out what information elementary schools teaching staffs need to understand as well as to find out what type of teacher’s guide would help elementary school teaching staffs to effectively support and assist students-in-transition adaptation process into Indonesian educational system. In order to get the answer, a research and development design using ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model is employed in this study. In the first step of ADDIE model, the Analysis, it was found out that all the 14 teachers, 3 students, and 3 parents who responded to sets of questionnaires and interview agreed that language, educational system, and culture play important role for the adaptation process of the students-in-transition to Indonesian educational system. In terms of language, the teachers should improve their English competence and the students-in-transition need to improve their competence in the “Bahasa” (Language) of Indonesia. In educational system aspect, it was revealed that the teachers have a very limited knowledge about education system in the countries, where the students-in-transition lived previously. Similar phenomenon happens with the teachers’ knowledge about culture of the countries where the students-in-transition previously stayed. As the three aspects are really needed to help the students-in-transition to adapt with Indonesian educational system, a guidebook containing these three topics was developed to be used by the elementary school teachers teaching the students-in-transition. • Situated Learning Theory: The Key to Effective Classroom Teaching'

    • Authors: Pengiran Hajah Siti Norainna binti Pengiran Haji Besar
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Situated learning theory holds that effective education requires learning that is embedded in authentic contexts of practice, wherein students engage in increasingly more complex tasks within social communities. Opponents of the theory point out its failure to account for individual differences among students and its insufficient emphasis on knowledge acquisition. In this essay, by using the qualitative methods, I describe situated learning and review the arguments for and against it, contrasting participatory and acquisitive learning models as they apply in classroom settings. The view that all learning should be situated if it is to be effective is too strong. Such a statement ignores the fact that learning is a matter of acquiring knowledge before one can participate effectively in the situation or real setting. The teacher acts as a provider, facilitator, and mediator of knowledge; students are able to learn from that knowledge and practice it in group activities. In turn, students arrive at a new level of knowledge and understanding based on their experience as a real practitioner in the group or community. The different norms and values attached to participation and acquisition complement one another, and either one alone would be insufficient. I then assess religious education in Brunei Darussalam, where education has traditionally focused on memorization and written exams. I suggest that a blend of participatory and acquisitive learning models may be the most effective approach to classroom instruction.KEY WORDS: Situated Learning; Classroom Instruction; Brunei Darussalam; Cognition; Social Networking.About the Author: Pengiran Dr. Hajah Siti Norainna binti Pengiran Haji Besar is a Lecturer at the APB UBD (Academy of Brunei Studies, University of Brunei Darussalam), Jalan Tungku Link, BE 1410, Negara Brunei Darussalam.
