Abstract: Wet-markets in Sarawak have remained a momentous part and parcel of the Sarawak people. Such markets exist in both the rural and urban areas of the state, but more importantly, it is popularized by women, either as sellers (traders) or buyers in these markets. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to critically examine the factors that motivate female sellers (market women) in these wet markets to take up this occupation. To empirically explain these factors, the study will explore the notion of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in relation to women’s participation in the wet market trading activities. Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some external influence. In contrast, extrinsic motivation is a behaviour that takes place when one is being influenced to do something by an external force.

Abstract: Tagang system is a method used to conserve an aquatic life. In Sabah, this system has been implemented since 2003 and known as tagal system. Due to its benefits to the community and aquatic life in Sabah, Sarawak Agriculture Department adopted and extended the tagal system to the people of Sarawak, especially in rural areas. In Iban language, the term tagal system is known as tagang system, which means ‘prohibit or prevent’ or ‘do not’, but in the Bidayuh language, it is known as tegang system. Terbat Mawang village which is located near Kedup River was chosen for the Tagang Project. Tagang Project was implemented officially in 2006. However, because of the drought in 2009, this project was almost terminated. The objective of this paper is to assess the benefits of the tagang system to the community. The outcome of this study shows that the acceptance and cooperation between the community and the department of agriculture are essential for the success of this project. This study used documents analysis, observation and in-depth interview.

Abstract: In the early 19th century in Sarawak, Hansen’s disease or leprosy became a reportable disease where the unfortunate victims were forcibly segregated to a leprosarium, leaving behind family, relatives and future. The image of claw hands or toes and rot noses were associated with the unclean and the sinful. This chronic transmissible affliction made a great panic to the state government to ostracize sufferers in an isolated settlement back in the 1920s. Fortunately, the infection can be cured but negative attitudes towards the former leprosy patients persist until now. This paper is based on ethnographic work that explores the stigma experienced and challenges faced by former leprosy patients and their generation. The research findings are based on three months of fieldwork with seven former sufferers and three children of former sufferers who live in Kampung Sinar Baru, Kota Padawan, Sarawak, a resettlement village for the former leprosy patients. The findings reveal their dreadful past experiences on compulsory segregation in Rajah Charles Brooke Memorial Hospital (RCBMH) where they were forced to be separated from family and hometown which still haunt them till today. In addition, former patients suffer mental health consequences and humiliation from the effects of treatment and also from visible deformities. Nevertheless, they believe that the stigmatization is less severe now than in the past and empathy from society makes them become more independent.

Abstract: Recycling is one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the world in which we live in. In this modern hectic world of ours, people are indulging in activities which harm the environment. It is vital to educate our future generation in the preservation of our pleasant environment by not only polluting but also spreading crucial diseases. The purpose of this research is to understand the recycling practices and perceptions among rural primary school children. The sample for this study included Primary Three to Primary Six (N=16, M=11.31 years) school children with different ages and ethnic groups. The research was carried out in SJK Chung Hua Asajaya, Samarahan, Sarawak. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect the data. Face-to-face interviews guided by questionnaires as a tool determine the habits and practices on recycling activity. Findings of this study indicated that majority of the school children have good habits of recycling in both school and at home. Their perceptions indicated that they were aware on the importance of recycling in preserving the environment. This study would benefit the people in rural areas to be aware on the importance of recycling and how they can practice and improve their habits in recycling. School plays an important role in cultivating this practice. Recycling will help the town council and related institutions to giveindividuals a better quality of living.

Abstract: This study investigates the possible gaps in current indigenous knowledge in the use of natural resources, specifically in traditional handicraft making. The Iban women are known for their traditional weaving skills. However, due to various reasons, this knowledge is declining. Through interviews and focus group discussions, the knowledge on the types and availability of resources in the respective areas, as well as the gap of knowledge in resource use and management between the older and younger generations and its cause were identified. Through observation, while traditional baskets and mats are still used by the Iban today, most of the traditional handicrafts made using natural materials seen in the longhouses are relics from the past, made by previous generations. The scarcity of raw materials such as rattan and wood has resulted in the decline of the production of such handicrafts. Though the skills of making these baskets especially among younger generation are eroding, the cultural significance of this basket among Iban community should not be forgotten.

Abstract: Cancer remains as one of the most fatal diseases affecting human life today. Despite medical advances in cancer treatment, cancer mortality rates remain high and there is still much more to be done to raise public awareness about its risks and prevention. Posters are among the means to communicate cancer risk messages to target audiences to influence them to adopt recommended behaviours to minimise their risk of developing the disease. This paper presents an analysis of cancer risk messages in cancer prevention posters. Using multimodality and persuasive communication theory, the paper examines the posters’ verbal and visual elements and how they converge in creating persuasive messages that aim to influence behaviour change among the target audience. To achieve this, five posters on cancer risk produced by the Ministry of Health Malaysia are chosen and analysed in terms of (1) their visual and verbal elements and (2) how they work together to produce persuasive messages with motivational appeals that can effectuate a change from harmful health behaviours to those that prevent cancer. The findings show that the posters’ visual and verbal elements work metafunctionally (e.g. ideationally, interpersonally and textually) in creating cancer risk messages. The findings also show that the posters’ visual and verbal elements converge with motivational appeals of fear, guilt and pity to produce persuasive messages that can induce people to change their behaviours and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of cancer. More importantly, the posters also promote the idea of cancerfree, healthy lifestyles.
