  • Competition and monopoly in the U.S. economy: What do the industrial
           concentration data show'
    • Authors: Leila Davis, Özgür Orhangazi
Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
A recent series of academic studies, think-tank reports, and news articles shows widespread attention to rising industrial concentration and market power in the U.S. economy. In this paper, we focus on concentration in the U.S. nonfinancial corporate sector to make three contributions to the literature. First, we use examples from the debate on industrial concentration to show that there are often-divergent predictions in the theoretical literature surrounding the expected consequences of concentration and monopolization for nonfinancial firms. Second, we use industry-level concentration data to describe recent trends in average concentration. We show that, while concentration increases across the majority of industries after the late 1990s, the retail and information-services sectors are particularly key for understanding recent trends in average industrial concentration. Third, we link our industry-level analysis with firm-level data to describe the relationship between industrial concentration and nonfinancial corporations’ profitability, markups, and investment. Consistent with the ambiguities in the theoretical literature, we find that these relationships are not uniform: while some highly concentrated industries confirm standard expectations with high markups, high profitability, and low investment rates, other highly concentrated industries earn lower-than-average markups and profits, suggesting that – in some industries – increased concentration and intensified competition may go hand in hand.

  • Financialization at work: Shareholder primacy and stagnant wages in the
           United States
    • Authors: Lenore Palladino
Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
Financialization has been ‘at work’ in the United States for nearly half of a century, as corporate executives have increasingly prioritized shareholder payments over other productive uses of corporate resources. Over the same period, employee bargaining power has fallen and wages for non-executive workers have stagnated across sectors. This article examines the effects of shareholder primacy on labour compensation in the United States in the neoliberal era at the aggregate, sectoral and firm level. Specifically, the article analyses changes in the relationships between rising profits, shareholder payments, and wages over the past four decades, finding evidence that shareholders’ gains come at the expense of employees in publicly traded corporations. The growing power of shareholders has been neglected compared to traditional arguments for wage stagnation, including globalization, de-unionization, rising market power and changes in industry composition. To disincentivize corporate behavior that prioritizes shareholders, a policy agenda is proposed that ends the practice of stock buybacks and institutes a stakeholder approach to corporate governance.

  • Amazon: A story of accumulation through intellectual rentiership and
           predation
    • Authors: Cecilia Rikap
Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
This article elaborates on intellectual monopoly theory as a form of predation and rentiership using Amazon as a case study. By analysing Amazon’s financial statements, scientific publications and patents, we show that Amazon’s economic power heavily relies on its systematic innovations and capacity to centralize and analyse customized data that orients its business and innovations. We demonstrate how Amazon’s innovation activities have evolved over time with growing importance of technologies related to data and machine learning. We also map Amazon’s innovation networks with academic institutions and companies. We show how Amazon appropriates intellectual rents from these networks and from technological cooperation with other intellectual monopolies. We argue that Amazon, as other data-driven monopolies, predates value from suppliers and third-party companies participating in its platform. One striking characteristic of Amazon is the low rate of reported profits. The centrality of innovations leads us to suggest an alternative calculation that shows that Amazon’s profits are not as low as they appear in Annual Reports. We also argue that lower profits are coherent with Amazon’s rentiership and predatory strategy since they contribute to the avoidance of accusations of excessive market power. Finally, the paper offers preliminary observations on: (i) the complementarities between financial and intellectual rentierism and (ii) how data-driven intellectual monopoly expands big corporations’ political power. Going beyond the specific case of Amazon, we thus contribute to a better understanding of the role of lead firms and power dynamics within innovation networks.

  • Owner–manager perceptions of regulation and micro-firm performance:
           An exploratory view
    • Authors: Marc E Betton, J Robert Branston, Philip R Tomlinson
Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
Regulation has traditionally been explored in terms of its negative burden on financial performance. We posit a true assessment should consider both its burden and value, as well as financial and wider performance criteria. This hypothesis is explored in the context of micro-firms using original survey data from the English tourism industry, using multivariate regression techniques and qualitative comments. Perceived-Burden demonstrates a negative association with financial performance, while Perceived-Value demonstrates a positive association with goal-satisfaction. Resulting policy recommendations focus on accompanying future regulatory changes with appropriate positive information so managers can move beyond burden to recognize the inherent value, and suggesting the need for further research in this area.

  • New wine in old bottles' Korean state actors’ policy engagement with
           the online gaming industry
    • Authors: Ji-Won Song
Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
This article revisits the developmental state literature that stresses the unitary role of the state in steering economic development in East Asia. Focusing on the Korean state actors’ diversity and their agency after the trend of globalization and democratization, this article highlights various state actors as agents and looks into how the role of state actors has changed with industrial development, using the setting of the Korean online gaming industry over the past two decades. By examining government policy measures on the industry, I found that the state actors have actively engaged with the industry, however, this agency has not been uniform due to the different purposes of the actors and sometimes led a detrimental effect against the needs or expectations of the industry. The findings, thus, contribute to the literature by suggesting the potentiality of agent-driven institutional change and the heterogeneity that comes from the state actors’ policy engagement.

    • Authors: Mathieu Dupuis, John Peters, Phillippe J Scrimger

Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
This article explores the long-run relationship between financialization and union density in Canada’s non-financial sector. Drawing on critical political economy literatures, we argue that the shareholder business model, the growing use of financial assets and leading global industries have led to a restructuring of labour markets and unionized workforces. Evidence from panel data analysis suggests that the negative relationship between financialization and union density holds when controlling for economic context and sectoral characteristics. We conclude that the sectoral impacts of financialization on union density – especially in highly financialized sectors such as manufacturing, extractive resources, transport and warehousing – are critical to understanding union decline and recent changes to employment relations.

Abstract: Competition & Change, Ahead of Print.
There are striking similarities between today’s early 21st century trade political economy and its late 19th century equivalent. Ascendant populist nationalism, escalating trade protectionism and tariff wars, growing discontent over globalization’s distributional impacts and fast emerging economic superpowers disrupting the global order are features shared by both periods. This comparative historical analysis explores what lessons and conclusions we may draw from the past late 19th century world that can be applied to today. Integral to this discussion are the prospects of our early 21st century world experiencing a similar endgame of global conflict, as transpired around a century ago. In revisiting the past to better understand the present and future, this paper first evaluates empirical similarities between the trade political economies of both periods. It then applies theories and concepts of economic nationalism, globalization and interdependence in developing deeper conclusions and arguments. Brexit, Trump and their historic parallels serve as primary focal points in this study.
