  • Becoming a Diplômé in Kinshasa. Education at the Intersection of
           Politics and Urban Livelihoods
    • Abstract: Katrien Pype : Like other cities around the globe where the state organizes exams, Kinshasa’s exétat shows the degree to which social difference and urban livelihood are intimately connected. However, despite the assumption that diplômés master book knowledge, recent changes in the practice of the exétat have transformed the meaning of a diplômé, turning that figure into a yankee, i.e., someone who possesses street knowledge that comes from experience with the informal and the illegal. More abstractly, the identity of a diplômé has become a signifier for the opposite of its taken-for-granted signified. Kinois society publicly acclaims the social and cultural capital attached to school degrees; however, most recent diplômés have obtained their degree through bribes and organized cheating.

: The cultural diversity of Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya is remarkable. Refugees from a dozen of countries live there together. This article examines the nature of their coexistence and its effect on the ethnic identity of young Somalis who grew up in the camp. We argue that a culture of conviviality has developed, but that ethnicity still shapes social life. We underline that the experience of the camp influences the belonging of young people and note that the camp can be described as a space of resistance. In doing so, we show that notions drawn from the literature on interethnic cohabitation in cities or on the ethnic identity of immigrants are relevant to understand the experience of refugees in camps.

: The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which Flemish news media report on Islam and Muslims, through a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 100 news items on one public and one commercial TV channel in 2010. Findings suggest that Islam was not a very prominent topic in the news. Although the focus was on international rather than on Belgian Islam, it was mostly portrayed in a ‘western’ context. Most recurrent topics were terrorism and fundamentalism, and religion. We found specific ‘Islam news’ (e.g. about religion) being fairly objective and balanced, while news items about different topics often simplistically associated Islam and Muslims with negative themes such as terrorism and violence.

: This longitudinal study on the linguistic, social, and academic integration of immigrant students in secondary school in a region of Quebec presents some of the challenges these students face in their social integration during their first two years in the host society. The objectives of the study are to document the academic progression of these adolescents, and to describe their integration in regular or special classes. The theoretical framework considers the reciprocal nature of the process of integration, as well as the various acculturation strategies used by students. However, the present article presents only data from the perspectives of immigrant students. Findings reveal serious challenges in the lived experiences of these students, individual and systemic obstacles, and the importance of socioaffective factors in their process of integration.

: For newcomers learning the language of the host country helps them in their process of integration. This is the case of immigrant women in Quebec, although many challenges await them. Still, they are active and motivated about language learning. This article presents a study of the linguistic trajectory of nine immigrant women enrolled in a French language program in Quebec. Using the approach of the language biography, semi-structured interviews and a learning diary kept for four months, we interviewed nine immigrant women enrolled and enrolled in full-time French courses about their contact time with the French language the spoken languages in the classroom in Quebec and at home, their networks of friends and social activities. Overall, these women are proactive and adjust depending on where they are, the Other and current issues.

: This analysis focuses on a new migrant group in Quebec and Montreal, the North-African migrants. It analyses the issue of ethnic visibility for such a new social group, which is often defined by its “muslimness.” This study focuses on the meaning of “maghrebinity” in Quebec and Montreal’s context, particularly where ethnicity markers were used to make this “maghrebi” attachment visible, such as Little-Maghreb. This “neighbourhood” recognized by stakeholders as a visible urban area dedicated to North-African migrants is a laboratory, to understand how ethnic diversity is managed in times of islamophobia.
