  • Sentinels for the Environment

    • Authors: Frédéric Keck
Abstract: This article compares the modes of organisation and engagement of birdwatching societies in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Tracing their origins to American, Japanese, and British models of nature conservation, it shows the growing involvement of Chinese citizens in the observation and protection of birds. Asking how birds can be used as “flagship species” to hold together environmental movements in a sustainable and constructive way, the article proposes the concept of “sentinel” to capture the mix of democratic environmental concern and a military model of territory mapping.

  • Remembering the Age of Iron

    • Authors: Wanning Sun
Abstract: Over the past few years we have witnessed a minor cultural phenomenon in China, with the production and enthusiastic reception nationwide of several television dramas about Chinese workers in the socialist decades. Set in the industrial plants of Liaoning in China’s northeast, once the industrial powerhouse of the socialist nation, these drama series centre on the dramatic transformation in workers’ experiences from 1949 to the start of economic reforms. In this paper I explore these series, asking: what does the smallscale production but enthusiastic reception of this genre tell us about the contemporary cultural politics of class? This paper addresses this question by (1) highlighting the key aspects of workers’ experiences with socialism as depicted in these television narratives; (2) considering the creative agenda of Gao Mantang, the script writer of the most successful industrial-themed television series; and (3) identifying some crucial ways in which the subjectivity of worke...

  • Reconfiguring Red

    • Authors: Rosemary Roberts
Abstract: This paper uses a case study of the 2006 TV series remake of the Maoist classic The Red Detachment of Women to examine the way the reproduction of the Red Classics in the reform era has functioned to maintain Party foundation myths that validate and morally legitimise its continued rule while accommodating a major shift in class politics in Chinese society. By tracing the change in the identity of the central hero, Hong Changqing, from working class child labourer and son of an ordinary seaman to a middle class, wealthy, overseas Chinese with family origins in the local gentry, the paper argues that the TV series functions to consolidate the symbiotic relationship between the Party and China’s new middle class, while promoting a consumer lifestyle and consigning the working class to the margins of social and political power.

  • Masters of the Nation

    • Authors: Qian Gong
Abstract: Cinema, an extremely popular and useful cultural form during the Maoist era, played a big role in shaping working class subjectivity. This article argues that despite their highly politicised and formalised content, industrial-themed films made during the Cultural Revolution created a “masters of the nation” subjectivity that still resonates with workers who grew up watching these films. In doing so, this article brings together two bodies of scholarship that rarely make reference to one another: filmmaking in the Cultural Revolution period and post-Mao workers’ subjectivity. Post-Mao scholarship has gone beyond simply dismissing films from the Cultural Revolution period as crude propaganda designed to create a highly politicised mass mind. It has drawn our attention to the more complicated nature of this body of filmmaking, particularly the “model play” films. However, new features made during the Cultural Revolution are often seen as “too ideological” to warrant academic attention...

  • Familiar Spaces: (National) Home in Contemporary Taiwanese Tourist
           Souvenirs

    • Authors: Adina Zemanek
Abstract: This paper discusses depictions of space in contemporary tourist souvenirs manufactured by private companies that explicitly undertake defining and promoting Taiwan for a local and international audience. They highlight “Taiwan” as the nation’s name, associate it with the island’s map as national territory, and fill this territory not only with iconic landmarks, but above all with ordinary, familiar spaces and sights. The latter are de-naturalised for the purpose of building national identity understood as a specifically Taiwanese way of life. As historical palimpsests, the depicted landscapes also construct a national heritage not based on a single, local tradition, but shaped by manifold native and external factors. This definition of Taiwan can be deemed a grassroots response to official undertakings in nation branding that frame the island as preserver of high, traditional Chinese culture and downplay politically sensitive local elements. Its non-antagonistic character may be a ...

(éds.), Queer/Tongzhi China: New Perspectives on Research, Activism and
           Media Cultures,

    • Authors: Tiantian Zheng
Abstract: This edited volume collects works from activists, scholars, and artists from China and beyond to address the issue of social activism and community-building among the LGBTQ population in China. Employing diverse methodologies from disciplines such as anthropology, cultural and media studies, Chinese studies, literature, and sociology, this volume presents the voices and perspectives of LGBTQ artists, scholars, and activists who organise communities and disseminate ideas through myriad cultural venues such as documentary and online media platforms. In so doing, the volume demonstrates the polyvalent and sometimes interchangeable meanings and uses of terms such as tongzhi and queer, and the tensions between political activism and academic works. The volume addresses various political challenges arising in research, teaching, and other activist practices on sexual and gender minorities in China. Contributors to the volume discuss political censorship, self-censorship, heavy scrutiny, an...

  • Cai Fang, China’s Economic Growth Prospects: From Demographic
           Dividend To Reform Dividend,

    • Authors: Sandra Poncet
Abstract: Cai Fang is a demographer and economist, currently director of the Institute of Population and Labour Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He is a member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (since 2008) and author of many books and research articles on China’s demographic transition and the reality of its growth process. His book, China’s Economic Growth Prospects: From Demographic Dividend to Reform Dividend, combines theoretical reflections and empirical work to analyse the engines of China’s growth and to explain the deceleration underway. The argumentation highlights the existence of a demographic dividend, the source of a sea of workers behind China’s industrialisation and development process until recently. The book’s main aim is to signal the end of this demographic dividend, portending the evaporation of China’s comparative advantage based on low-cost work and the inevitable slowing of the growth rate. The various chapters discuss the...

  • John Donaldson (ed.), Assessing the Balance of Power in Central-Local
           Relations in China,

    • Authors: Camille Boullenois
Abstract: Drawing upon the scholarship on “decentralised authoritarianism” (Landry 2008), this collection conducts a comparative study of how central-local government relations in contemporary China are configured and shape policy-making in several domains. Mainly based on abundant secondary sources and official statistics, it offers an excellent synthesis of the balance of power between different levels of government on issues ranging from investment control to government finance and taxation, regional policy, culture protection and promotion, policy implementation, social welfare, and even foreign policy. Overall, the book offers a fascinating account of the process of decentralisation and re-centralisation that has occurred since 1978 in China, with a focus on shared interests and complementarity more than on conflict and opposition. After an introduction detailing China’s administrative hierarchies and their evolution over time, chapters 2 and 3 focus on province/centre relations in the f...

  • Carolyn Hsu, Social Entrepreneurship and Citizenship in China: The rise of
           NGOs in the PRC,

    • Authors: Virginie Arantes
Abstract: Carolyn Hsu’s Social Entrepreneurship and Citizenship in China: The rise of NGOs in the PRC starts with an expected question: “Was the 2008 Sichuan earthquake a major turning point for Chinese citizens'” In fact, the Sichuan earthquake is widely seen as one of the most important events that contributed to a rising level of social awareness, and more importantly, in recognising the potential of NGOs in China. However, this book shows that such interest in social issues goes back before the 2008 earthquake. Based on the personal stories and practices of key social entrepreneurs, this book explores the ideology of suzhi, or the search for quality, as the foundation of Chinese social entrepreneurship. The book is divided into seven chapters. In the first two chapters, based on examples recorded from the late Imperial period, the author demonstrates how today’s NGOs are the products of a long and rich philosophical tradition of humanitarianism and generosity. For Hsu, the idea that non-p...

  • Tom McDonald, Social Media in Rural China. Wang Xinyuan, Social Media in
           Industrial China,

    • Authors: Séverine Arsène
Abstract: These two books resulted from a comparative research project on the use of social networks entitled Why We Post, which in 2016 led to a series of 11 monographs by country (India, Turkey, Italy, etc.). Two of them dealt with China: one by Wang Xinyuan looks at the use of social media in industrial China, and the other by Tom McDonald focuses on rural China. This is a rare initiative backed by European funding for carrying out long-term ethnographic investigations (15 months’ field research), structured according to comparable research questions. The two books contain participant observations, more or less formal interviews with residents in selected localities, and the collection of materials from social networks, especially made accessible through developing personal relationships with those surveyed. McDonald chose a town in Shandong Province called Anshan (6,000 residents, or 31,000 with neighbouring villages included). Wang picked Goodpath, an industrial town in Zhejiang Province,...
