  • Sentinels for the Environment

    • Authors: Frédéric Keck
Abstract: This article compares the modes of organisation and engagement of birdwatching societies in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Tracing their origins to American, Japanese, and British models of nature conservation, it shows the growing involvement of Chinese citizens in the observation and protection of birds. Asking how birds can be used as “flagship species” to hold together environmental movements in a sustainable and constructive way, the article proposes the concept of “sentinel” to capture the mix of democratic environmental concern and a military model of territory mapping.

  • Remembering the Age of Iron

    • Authors: Wanning Sun
Abstract: Over the past few years we have witnessed a minor cultural phenomenon in China, with the production and enthusiastic reception nationwide of several television dramas about Chinese workers in the socialist decades. Set in the industrial plants of Liaoning in China’s northeast, once the industrial powerhouse of the socialist nation, these drama series centre on the dramatic transformation in workers’ experiences from 1949 to the start of economic reforms. In this paper I explore these series, asking: what does the smallscale production but enthusiastic reception of this genre tell us about the contemporary cultural politics of class? This paper addresses this question by (1) highlighting the key aspects of workers’ experiences with socialism as depicted in these television narratives; (2) considering the creative agenda of Gao Mantang, the script writer of the most successful industrial-themed television series; and (3) identifying some crucial ways in which the subjectivity of worke...

  • Reconfiguring Red

    • Authors: Rosemary Roberts
Abstract: This paper uses a case study of the 2006 TV series remake of the Maoist classic The Red Detachment of Women to examine the way the reproduction of the Red Classics in the reform era has functioned to maintain Party foundation myths that validate and morally legitimise its continued rule while accommodating a major shift in class politics in Chinese society. By tracing the change in the identity of the central hero, Hong Changqing, from working class child labourer and son of an ordinary seaman to a middle class, wealthy, overseas Chinese with family origins in the local gentry, the paper argues that the TV series functions to consolidate the symbiotic relationship between the Party and China’s new middle class, while promoting a consumer lifestyle and consigning the working class to the margins of social and political power.

  • Masters of the Nation

    • Authors: Qian Gong
Abstract: Cinema, an extremely popular and useful cultural form during the Maoist era, played a big role in shaping working class subjectivity. This article argues that despite their highly politicised and formalised content, industrial-themed films made during the Cultural Revolution created a “masters of the nation” subjectivity that still resonates with workers who grew up watching these films. In doing so, this article brings together two bodies of scholarship that rarely make reference to one another: filmmaking in the Cultural Revolution period and post-Mao workers’ subjectivity. Post-Mao scholarship has gone beyond simply dismissing films from the Cultural Revolution period as crude propaganda designed to create a highly politicised mass mind. It has drawn our attention to the more complicated nature of this body of filmmaking, particularly the “model play” films. However, new features made during the Cultural Revolution are often seen as “too ideological” to warrant academic attention...

  • Jason Y. Ng, Umbrellas in Bloom: Hong Kong's Occupy Movement Uncovered.
Richard C. Bush, Hong Kong in the Shadow of China – Living with the
           Leviathan.

    • Authors: Éric Sautedé
Abstract: Judging from the coverage it received both from local and international media at the time, the 79-day “Umbrella Movement” that rocked Hong Kong at the end of 2014 was bound to be scrutinised and analysed at length. Because of the significance of the movement itself, as well as its highly symbolic and graphic occurrence, the bright yellow umbrellas that were used to deflect pepper spray and tear gas shells came to symbolise the peaceful resistance of democracy-craving youth against abusive state power, all this at the very heart of one of the world most dynamic financial hubs, and at the doorstep – in and out, one could say – of one of the most repressive political regimes on the planet. Thus, the movement had a particular significance for Hong Kong itself: if the anti-Article 23, aka anti-subversion law, protests of 2002-2003 somehow symbolised the end of “political apathy” in the former British colony, the Umbrella Movement could certainly be described as a dazzling and buoyant embod...

  • Warren Sun and Frederick C. Teiwes, Paradoxes of Post-Mao Rural Reform:
Initial Steps Toward a New Chinese Countryside 1976–1981,

    • Authors: Alexandre de Saint-Denis
Abstract: This work on the “Paradoxes of Post-Mao Rural Reform” constitutes another masterstroke by Warren Sun and Frederick Teiwes in the Chinese studies arena. As the authors themselves pointedly note, foreign observers have had the misguided tendency to swallow the Chinese Communist Party shibboleth that depicts the reform process as a relatively linear and consensual process and assigns all credit for the success of economic reforms to Deng Xiaoping following a so-called ideological and political struggle against the Hua Guofeng-led neo-Maoist clan. Sun and Teiwes astutely show that while the Beijing elites went along with the rejection of the Mao regime’s inherent instability, they all shared – Deng included – an attachment to the collectivist system. Backed by solid arguments and multiple sources, the authors also establish that while these elites were divided over how to go about improving the lot of the poorest peasants, it was above all Hua Guofeng, who with his long experience in fa...

  • Jeroen de Kloet and Anthony Fung, Youth Cultures in China,

    • Authors: Ling Minhua
Abstract: Youth Cultures in China opens with Wen Yiduo’s assumption of revolutionary zeal among Chinese youth in the early twentieth century, when China was seized by wars and crises, but it argues that Chinese youth today embrace “no more revolution.” Having grown up with market-oriented economic reforms, Chinese youth receive a good level of education, enjoy mass consumption, and share nationalistic sentiments amidst China’s resurgence as a global economic and political superpower in the twenty-first century. Meanwhile, the Chinese state has evolved into an effective one-party regime equipped with an immense bureaucracy, a strong army, and a tech-savvy governing apparatus. All these macro changes demand new and nuanced approaches to studying the means and practices of youth culture in contemporary China. Based on media analysis and ethnographic data collected in major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, between 1992 and 2016, the authors depict the multitudes of Chin...

  • Ming-Sho Ho, Working Class Formation in Taiwan: Fractured Solidarity in
           State-Owned Enterprises, 1945-2012,

    • Authors: Éric Florence
Abstract: Ming-Sho Ho’s Working Class Formation in Taiwan is a fine-grained socio-historical study of working class formation in Taiwan’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) between 1945 and 2012, focusing on the sugar and petroleum sectors. In addition to 81 interviews with workers at the China Petroleum Corporation and 53 interviews with workers at the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the author has made extensive use of historical and archival data as well as a large body of literature in labour studies. Ho’s study is also based on his former work experience as a campaign staff member in the 1999-2000 union election at the China Petroleum Corporation and in 2001 as a member of a taskforce on privatisation for the union. In Chapter One (pp. 1-15), Ho provides a thorough discussion of his approach, which is grounded in historical institutionalism. Departing from the classic Marxist perspective, the author mobilises the theoretical assumption that studying working class formation does not require excludin...

  • Stefan Al (ed.), Mall City, Hong Kong’s Dreamworlds of Consumption,

    • Authors: Nicolas Douay
Abstract: Stefan Al, professor of urban design at the University of Pennsylvania, presents a third collection discussing a facet of China’s urban development. In 2012, he focused on southern China’s factory towns, and in 2014 he wrote about urban villages in the same region. This new publication is concerned with commercial centres, especially in the case of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. As the title indicates, Hong Kong is often seen as the quintessential urban object of commercial centres, often labelled “mall city.” These numerous malls are thus “dreamworlds of consumption” marking space in Hong Kong as a part of its social life. Hong Kong holds the world record for the highest commercial density, with one mall per square mile or 5,606 square metres per square kilometre. Only Singapore comes somewhere close with 4,023 square metres per square kilometre, while Holland is at a very distant third with 52 square metres. Hong Kong is thus often held up as Asia’s Shopping Paradise,...

  • Mick Atha and Kennis Yip, Piecing Together Sha Po: Archaeological
           Investigations and Landscape Reconstruction,

    • Authors: Maxime Decaudin
Abstract: Piecing Together Sha Po is an archaeological publication that traces the 6,500-year-old human occupation of Sha Po, a coastal village in the north-west of Lamma Island in Hong Kong. The authors, Mick Atha and Kennis Yip, who have lived on the island for the past ten years, are both archaeologists who trained in York, England. The former teaches his discipline at the Chinese University of Hong Kong while the latter is a professional consultant in archaeology. Having carried out numerous excavations there, they relied on their experience as well as on what they call "grey literature" to gather all the archaeological knowledge concerning this small village. Unlike the majority of publications on Hong Kong archaeology, this book does not attempt to produce general conclusions about a specific period of time by comparing the discoveries from a large number of sites, but instead aims to locate the results from just under a century of Sha Po’s archaeological excavations in their surroundin...
