Through Blanchot's and Derrida's reading of Artaud's work, this article argues that an anthropic decentering of writing enables the redefinition of a non-dialectical and non-substantial materialism which does justice to the impersonal and organoleptic character of art, given that it does not reduce it to the human representative horizon. The conceptual path we follow intends to point out that Blanchot (on Le livre à venir) and Derrida (on Forcener le subjectile) retrieve a certain logic from Artaud's works which implies a reconfiguration of the notion of surface and concomitantly forces a new ontological and aesthetic approach. The latter reveals the need to maintain a distance from the modern horizon in order to offer a space for the materials' inorganic power without depriving it of animation and, at the same time, to vindicate the living without yielding it to human requirements.

During the 20th Century, a progressive analysis of the impact of aesthetics on geopolitics and territorial arrangement has been developed. If so far the Renaissance perspective, as a technique that is proper of the measurement of space, had enabled the development of (geo)politics as territorial sovereignty, the new technologies of information and communication have provoked a crisis for the very possibility of control and measure over said space of political appearance. Through the writings of Paul Virilio, this article analyzes the crisis of space as a possibility of measuring and organizing production in the information age, identifying the major consequences of the decay of (geo)politics over social and urban relations.

This article analyzes the way in which Jean Renoir, in his film Naná -an adaptation of Émile Zola's novel- shows the impossibility of an "objective point of view" for its characters. It is argued that Renoir shows this impossibility through narrative techniques that question, at the same time, the possibilities of "realism" in cinema. The article explains the existence of "two realisms" -narrative and descriptive- as constitutive of the filmic text, that are used paradoxically by Renoir to deny objectivity in his characters' point of view.

The aim of this text is to explore and discuss the way in which both the commercial films and the auteur cinema made by Luis Buñuel in Mexico, introduce us to the production of new cinematic representations of poverty. In order to do this, the films El gran calavera (1949), Los olvidados (1950), El Bruto (1952) and Nazarín (1959) will be analyzed. It is argued that these films suggest different ways in which poverty is inscribed that put the hegemonic representation imposed by the golden age of Mexican cinema under tension. Moreover, the ideal of desire is recognized as a common mechanism in the actions of its protagonists.

  • Enclaves existenciales: la enfermedad terminal en
           la pantalla

    • Abstract: Este ensayo explora los recorridos fílmicos que viven los sujetos protagonistas a partir de dos casos de estudio: Lightning Over Water (1979), de Nicholas Ray y Wim Wenders, y Sick, The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1996), de Kirby Dick. This paper explores the filmic trajectories experienced by the protagonists in two case studies: Lightning Over Water (1979) by Nicholas Ray and Wim Wenders, and Sick, The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1996) by Kirby Dick. In both films, the limit-experience, caused by a disease, becomes an active device, one that produces knowledge for the protagonists. In this radical experience, what is revealed is the link between self-representation and a will to self-destruction, and the normative margins of rationality are questioned. Based on the studies of Jean-Luc Nancy, Jean Baudrillard and Clément Rosset, this essay examines an approach to terminal illness and self-representation both in the context of pain and the voyeuristic process of death as a spectacle.

This paper is located at the threshold between aesthetics and politics in order to interrogate the most recent works by Georges Didi-Huberman. It is argued that his "thinking of images" implies not only a politics of art, but also an art of politics, i. e., an aesthetic politics that lead us to the arena of actual political debate, showing not only the political implications of images but, much more decisively, the figural assumptions of politics. We discuss the main features of this program, before showing the scope of montage as an aesthetic and political articulation of the common, and as the culmination of Didi-Huberman's intervention.

This article focuses on the figure of the garden in a selection of novels and urban chronicles by José Donoso. A study of these works reveals that the garden fosters the legibility of subjects and urban landscapes within a space of power where aesthetic and political discourses confront each other/are debated. The figure of the garden emerges as a milestone in a written and urban landscape that attracts the vigilant gaze of strategists and the communal aspirations of dissidents.

This paper analyzes the art action titled Zonas de dolor by Diamela Eltit, produced in the eighties. These video-performances were set up in marginal locations during the Chilean dictatorship. We will analyze how the marginal space and the hurt body of the protagonist produce subjectivities that exercise political resistance in the context of extreme violence and how the spectators emancipate themselves actively to create a disaggregated community which stands proudly at the margins.

In this article we explore the metalanguage of Chilean anthropological literature, as an autonomous genre that aesthetically integrates literature and social sciences. By metalanguage we shall understand the aesthetic principles developed by the authors of said genre, which can be found within or outside of their writings, and that show the existence of a community of creation and reception that insists in making sense of its work by delineating its transdisciplinary borders. All of this in order to identify in this development the ongoing search for an original aesthetics.

Rodrigo Olavarría's notebooks, formulated as intimate diaries or notebooks, have a similar structure: a romantic breakup, a journey moved by grief and the reference to love as an excuse that fades among thousands of readings through which the artist's identity and stance are revealed. He sacrifices himself for his exercise and he lives connected to the present of his daily life. However, he is capable of exceeding the isolation of writing where the self faces itself and attempts to cling to the past, memory and the environment. His sacrifice turns him into a stoic, a slave, a fighter. Such archetypes, and his pilgrimage, are the starting point of the political reading approach proposed in this article.
