  • Becoming Indonesia: Political Gait of the Arabs in the Pre-Independence
           Period

    • Authors: Abdul Wahid Hasyim
      Pages: 88 - 100
Abstract: This article addresses the political gait of the Arabs in Pre-Independence Indonesia. Using a qualitative method with a historical approach, this article aims to parse the political role of Arabs in Indonesia, the achievements they have, and the challenges they have faced since they first came to Indonesia until the country became independent in 1945. This study identifies several things. First, the involvement of Arabs in Indonesian politics has been going on since the time of the kingdom or empire. Some Sayyids are believed to occupy important positions, such as advisors to the king, foreign diplomats, and ministers. Second, in modern times, primarily until 1945, Arabs, both individually and in groups, have played an essential role in the constellation of Indonesian politics. In addition to establishing and developing PAI (called the Indonesian Arab Association initially but changed to the Indonesian Arab Party) in 1934, its figures, especially A.R. Baswedan and Hamid Algadri, were among the prominent figures during the Indonesian independence process. Third, there was a change in tendency in which the Arabs no longer struggled with aspects of the trade, as their initial motivation to emigrate to the archipelago, but began to be involved in various spheres of Indonesian people's lives, including in state politics. They have become essential figures of Indonesian society. With the political role played, they gain a stronger identity, increasingly 'becoming Indonesia'.

           Presidential Debate, Trump Vs Clinton

    • Authors: Saefudin Saefudin
      Pages: 101 - 113
Abstract: This research aims at describing the speech text cohesion and its contribution to the rhetorical strategy used in the 2016 U.S Presidential debate between Trump and Clinton in their first campaign debate on the political topic area on achieving prosperity, America's direction, and securing America. As an effort to reach the purpose of research, the researcher applies qualitative descriptive method on Discourse Analysis (D.A.) as the theory to describe and analyze the lexical cohesion relation and rhetorical devices linguistically used in the discourse of presidential debate. Furthermore, based on the analysis, the data were found around 399 lexical cohesion devices of reiteration and 64 collocations used by Clinton, and as many as 576 lexical cohesion devices for reiteration and 58 markers of collocation relations were applied by Trump in the debate over U.S presidential debates. Repetition is the most dominant type of lexical cohesion at U.S presidential debate, both realized by Clinton and Trump. The repetition achieved by both debate partners was 39.74% and 63.25%. Some of the lexical relation roles used by the two pairs of candidates based on the topics discussed reveal some differences in their political objectives, namely, economic and industrial issues, law, trade, investment, labor, taxes, and terrorism. Meanwhile, the rhetorical tools used by the two candidate pairs include; metaphor, a list of three, parallelism, and contrastive pairs (antithesis). In addition, the debate rhetoric technique used by both candidates includes; anaphora, epiphora, and climax.

  • The Manifestation of Monster and the Emotional Repression in Jennifer
           Kent’s The Babadook (2013)

    • Authors: Inayatul Chusna, Anggita Rizkiarachma Ansyahputri, Avi Ainul Fikri, Muhammad Rafli
      Pages: 114 - 123
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to explore the emotional state of the main character, Amelia, in The Babadook film. The film portrays how Amelia deals with her loss and how the monster Babadook represents the repressed feeling of loss. This research analyses the emergence of the Babadook, how it affects her, and how her behaviors are considered as melancholia by using qualitative method and the theory of psychoanalysis, Mourning and Melancholia by Sigmund Freud (1917). The research finds that the eerie monster haunts Amelia whenever she is confronted to her repressed emotion: grief and self- loathing. The Babadook monster is the manifestation of grief and loss. As the monster getting stronger, the sinister presence of the Babadook starts to affect Amelia’s psyche as she is getting more paranoid and more aggressive. She is also unable to show affection toward her son. Moreover, Amelia shows an act of self-destruct by keeping herself from the outside world and unconsciously blaming herself for the death of the husband. Those behaviors indicate that Amelia comes into the state of melancholia. Finally, she manages to overcome the state by accepting the feeling of loss and let herself mourn. The study of this film suggests a way of dealing with trauma and loss by accepting their permanent presence in life.

    • Authors: M. Adib Misbachul Islam, Elve Oktafiyani
      Pages: 124 - 139
Abstract: This study aims to discuss the meaning of Repen Ripangi as a literary narrative manuscript of Adipati Panji Suryakusuma, Regent of Semarang which was then composed in the form of macapat song by Panji Jayasubrata. By placing it in the context of social and political history in Java in the nineteenth century, the text reveals the tension between the two social elites during the colonial period in a form of narrative poetry. This research used qualitative method with representation theory. The results show that the writing of Repen Ripangi in the form of narrative poetry was not merely an aesthetic expression of the author Javanese priayi, but also a means of representation which goal is the stigmatization of Kiai Ahmad Arrifai as a kiai who brings apprehension in society. In addition, another goal of the representation in Repen Ripangi was to strengthen of the penghulu as one of religious authorities in Java during the colonial period and the defense of priyai interests and their political patrons, namely the colonial government in Java.

    • Authors: Muhammad Farkhan, Li Unsyah Naimah, M. Agus Suriadi
      Pages: 140 - 153
Abstract: This study aims to find out strategies used in the translation of food-related culture-specific items in Netflix cooking show, The Final Table of UK and USA episodes, and factors that influence the choice of strategies used in translating these items. The study uses discourse analysis as a research design relying on corpuses or food terminologies in Indonesian subtitle and their original as its primary data. All data were marked bold, rewritten, sorted, and classified in accordance with the identified themes of the culture-specific items. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using Pedersen’s translation strategy, particularly for culture-specific items. The study found out that there were 51 food-related culture-specific items in the source language (SL) with their translations, and there were five translation strategies employed by the translator in rendering these items, namely retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, and substitution. Retention was the most frequently used strategy as it resembled 35 times in the data. The most common factor identified was the non-existence of the source language foodstuff terms in the target language as it existed 21 times out of 51 data.
