  • A Study of Artificial Neural Network Training Algorithms for
           Classification of Cardiotocography Signals

    • Authors: Zafer CÖMERT; Adnan Fatih KOCAMAZ
Abstract: Cardiotocography (CTG) thatcontains fetal heart rate (FHR) and uterine contraction (UC) signals is amonitoring technique. During the last decades, FHR signals have been classifiedas normal, suspicious, and pathological using machine learning techniques. As aclassifier, artificial neural network (ANN) is notable due to its powerfulcapabilities. For this reason, behaviors and performances of neural networktraining algorithms were investigated and compared on classification task ofthe CTG traces in this study. Training algorithms of neural network werecategorized in five group as Gradient Descent, Resilient Backpropagation,Conjugate Gradient, Quasi-Newton, and Levenberg-Marquardt. Two different experimentalsetups were performed during the training and test stages to achieve moregeneralized results. Furthermore, several evaluation parameters, such as accuracy(ACC), sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), and geometric mean (GM), were takeninto account during performance comparison of the algorithms. An open access CTGdataset containing 2126 instances with 21 features and located under UCIMachine Learning Repository was used in this study. According to results ofthis study, all training algorithms produced rather satisfactory results. Inaddition, the best classification performances were obtained withLevenberg-Marquardt backpropagation (LM) and Resilient Backpropagation (RP) algorithms. The GM values of RP and LM were obtained as 89.69% and 86.14%, respectively. Consequently, this study confirms that ANN is a useful machine learning tool to classify FHRrecordings.

    • Authors: Sumon KHANDAKAR; Md. Nasiqul ISLAM, Robiul Islam RUBEL, Sk. Suzauddin YUSUF
Abstract: In this era of modern civilization, liquid fuel transport ismandatory around the world. But there has been several oil spilling accidentsaround the world and their negative effects are against all the livingelements. In the last decades Bangladesh face such problem randomly in sea areaand as well as in the river side damaging a large number of livings alongsidethe river having a badly effect on the entire ecology. The local residentscollect the spilled oil manually. The system is less efficient, slow and healthhazardous. Belt Oil skimmers using Polymer, Teflon, Elastomer, CorrosionResistant Steel materials belt are widely used for recovery of this oil. However, they are costly and unavailable. In this work a low cost simpleblanket belt skimmer device by using locally available equipment that will becapable to absorb the spilled oil rapidly from river water that is filled withanimal and plant waste. After constructing such oil skimmer, the performance isevaluated that accomplish two types of oil having different physicalproperties. Experimental analysis gives around 190 litre/hour of Sample-1 oilwhereas absorption rate for the Sample-2 oil is around 253 litre/hour for theconstructed device with minimum cost compare to the other conventional belt oilskimmer.

  • Investigation of Strength Characteristics of Natural Stones in Ürgüp
           (Nevşehir/Turkey)

    • Authors: Eren PAMUK; Aydın BÜYÜKSARAÇ
Abstract: Natural Stones of Ürgüp (Nevşehir)have used commonly both indoor and outdoor due to easy give form at the stonequarry. That’s why some geotechnical and geomechanical tests must be done inorder to determine quality separation and strength characterisation.Destructive and non-destructive tests were done on the five different colored and featured samples (10×10×10 cm3)named Vişne, Devetüyü, Gülkurusu, KirliBeyaz and Sarı obtained from studyarea.  Theuniaxial stress test was made in the frame of destructive tests. Schmidthammer and ultrasound tests were applied in the frame of non-destructive tests. Results of destructive and non-destructive tests were compared and weaknessesand advantages of all methods were discussed.  One of the samples named Sarı has morestrength according to other samples. Gülkurusu and Kirli Beyaz samples have the lowest strength. Similarly, Schmidt hammer and ultrasound measurements gavehigh strength results. Because of destructive and non-destructive testingmethods from different natural stone samples with non-uniform mineralcombination were in accordance. Non-destructive testing methods can be used forstrength characterisation of natural stones. In this case, geomechanicalfeatures and quality ranks can be determined with in-situ tests without carry the samples to laboratories.

Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to prove the way of invitro conditioned cells death. There is an increased axonal regeneration after aperipheral nerve is injured if it exposed to an earlier prior injury. The firstinjury causing the enhanced regeneration is called a conditioning lesion. Inthis study, Dorsal Root Ganglion primer cell culture was performed then neuronswere conditioned in vitro with an effective and new method. It was observed that invitro conditioned cells were regenerated much faster than control group cellsbut at the end of 48th hour, they died. The cell death way of thesein vitro conditioned neurons was determined by an in situ Cell Detection Kit Fluorescein and visualized byfluorescent microscopy. Finally, apoptotic cell deaths observed at in vitro conditioned neurons. This studyis important for the continuity of enhanced regeneration capacity ofconditioning lesion effect and neuronal survival and also it will provide thebasis for new studies.

  • A Diagnostic Model for Identification of Myocardial Infarction from
           Electrocardiography Signals

    • Authors: Aykut DİKER; Zafer CÖMERT, Engin AVCI
Abstract: Electrocardiography (ECG) is auseful test used commonly to observe the electrical activity of a heart.Recently, a growing relationship has been observed between diagnosis of adisease and using of machine learning techniques. In this scope, a diagnostic applicationmodel designed based on a combination of Recursive Feature Eliminator (RFE) andtwo different machine learning algorithms called as -nearestneighbors (-NN)and artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for classification of ECGsignals in this study. The experiments performed on an open-access ECGdatabase. Firstly, the signals were passed a pre-processing step. Then, severaldiagnostic features from morphological and statistical domains were extractedfrom the signals. In the last stage of the analysis, RFE algorithm covering10-fold cross-validation and the mentioned machine learning techniques wereemployed to separate abnormal Myocardial Infarction (MI) samples from normal. The promising results as accuracy of 80.60%, sensitivity of 86.58% andspecificity of 64.71% were achieved. The validation of the contribution waschecked by comparing the performances of both -NNand ANN to related works. Consequently, the proposed diagnostic model ensuredan automatic and robust ECG signal classification model.

  • Determination of fracture toughness parameters of concrete using compact
           pressure test

    • Authors: Esra TUGRUL TUNC
Abstract: Fractures start with the formation of cracks and occur as the cracks spread in building materials. This causes significant damage to the buildings. Fracture mechanics is a science that investigates crack behavior, crack analysis and what to do for prevention of cracks. In the present study, concrete fracture toughness parameters were investigated by compact pressure test. In this context, research and a series of experiments were conducted on fractures, types of fractures, fracture mechanics, and compact pressure test. In the present empirical study, 5 unnotched and 15 notched, a total of 20 samples were used. 40 mm notches were created on notched samples. Cube splitting experiments were conducted using 10 mm wide strips on unnotched samples. For Type-I, Type-II and Type-III that were used in the calculation of the fracture toughness parameters of the said samples, fracture loads, tensile values and fractured sample details are presented. Since the concrete is a semi-brittle material, compact pressure samples were analyzed according to the principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics. It was concluded that the standard deviation for the critical fracture parameter (KIc) of the sample, which was naturally more stable than the present study, was smaller and as the structure size increased, the fracture toughness value increased as well.

  • Effect of Relay-Priority Mechanism on Multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks

    • Authors: Davut ARI; Musa ÇIBUK, Fikri AĞGÜN
Abstract: In multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), sensor nodes which cannot communicate directly with the Coordinator Node(CN) can communicate with CN thanks to the other joined sensor nodes. The multi-hop WSN structure is preferred for large-scale WSNs and that consist of multiple sensor and CN.As in the networks sensor node count increase, hop count increase as well. Because of this, end-to-end delay increases. Unless it is taken prevention, end-to-end delays reach a level that negatively effects on network performance in multi-hop WSN. In this study, for multi-hop WSNs, it is aimed to design a new a relay-priority mechanism which will reduce the end-to-end delay. This is a method that will reach the CN with a minimum hop count while joining the node. Thanks to the minimum hop, end-to-end delay is reduced. Performance analysis of this study was done in Riverbed (OPNET) Modeler simulation environment.
