To address the needs of the recent trends in the field of science and technology. In the globalized world, writing in English has become imperative. For academic research, writing is a concrete and demonstrative activity that can if conducted effectively and with self-awareness, leads to improvements in teaching, research, collaborative learning and scholarly dialogue. Academic research writing is a genre of writing that emphasizes the combination of personal insights and secondary material gathered through focused research and investigation of a particular topic. To achieve successive academic writing one needs to understand the nature of formal writing and the genre of research writing. Whether it is the writing of a research paper or thesis/dissertation this particular genre of writing demands certain characteristic features such as abstract/synopsis, and the whole process involved in academic research writing. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of academic research writing, the steps involved in the whole process of academic writing like Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Proofreading and also provides a detailed description of the characteristic features of a good abstract and thesis from a structural and language perspective.
