  • Evaluation of the Diagnosis of Typhoid Fever Using the Widal Test and the
           Anti Salmonella typhi IgM Test

    • Authors: Wahdah Norsiah, Neni Oktiyani
Abstract: Typhoid fever is a systemic infectious disease caused by Salmonella enteric serotype typhi. Laboratory tests are essential because the clinical symptoms of typhoid fever are not specific. The definitive diagnosis of typhoid fever make by culture isolation of Salmonella typhi, but this test is expensive and takes a long time. Other supporting tests that can do quickly are the Widal and Salmonella typhi IgM tests. This study aimed to determine the suitability between the results of the Widal test and the results of the anti-Salmonella typhi IgM test. This type of research is an observational analytic study determining the sample based on the accidental sampling technique. The number of samples taken was 42 samples. The results showed that the Widal Test in typhoid patients was 76% positive and 24% negative. Based on the anti-Salmonella typhi IgM test results in typhoid patients, 38% were positive, and 62% were negative. The study concluded a fragile agreement between the Widal test results and the results of the anti-Salmonella typhi IgM test. It recommended that the Widal test carried out for the initial examination and a quick community survey. The Tubex test highly recommends for diagnosis.

  • Comparative Test of Ret-He Examination in Diagnosis of Iron Deficiency in
           Pregnant Women

    • Authors: Gilang Nugraha, Nur Masruroh, Diyan Wahyu Kurniasari
Abstract: The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency, which found in 50% of anemia cases. There are 66.7% of pregnant women in Indonesia that still lack iron intake. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) examination as a single parameter is the initial indicator of iron deficiency, considered more sensitive in detecting iron reserves in the body. This study aims to determine the effectivity of the Ret-He examination as a single parameter in establishing the diagnosis of iron deficiency in pregnant women. This research was conducted on 30 pregnant women. The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of Ret-He were determined by comparing the results of the biochemical examination of iron profiles. Iron deficiency defined as an abnormal examination result on two or more biochemical parameters, which were SI 425 µg/dL, serum ferritin

  • The Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Blood Glucose Levels and Lipid
           Profile in Diabetes Mellitus Patients

    • Authors: Andika Aliviameita, Nevy Elensya, Puspitasari Puspitasari, Sri Mukhodim Faridah Hanum
Abstract: Diabetes mellitus and its complications are still a major health problem in the world. Diabetes mellitus is closely related to the lipid profile, especially concerning the cardiovascular disease. A method that can be used to treat diabetes mellitus is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This study aims to observe changes in blood glucose levels and lipid profiles in patients with diabetes mellitus with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The determination of blood glucose levels and lipid profiles is done by photometry. A total of 30 patients with diabetes mellitus examined for their blood glucose level and lipid profile before and after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In the Paired T-test, there were significant decrease in blood glucose levels (p= 0,000), total cholesterol (p= 0,000), and triglycerides (p= 0,000) after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The conclusion of this study shows there is a significant decrease in blood glucose level and lipid profile (total cholesterol, and triglycerides) after hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

  • Early Relapse After Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Multiple
Myeloma is Still Prognostic in The Era of Novel Agents

    • Authors: Semih Başcı, Tuğçe Nur Yiğenoğlu, Bahar Uncu Ulu, Mehmet Bakırtaş, Derya Şahin, Tahir Darçın, Jale Yıldız, Alparslan Merdin, Nuran Ahu Baysal, Dicle İskender, Merih Kızıl Çakar, Mehmet Sinan Dal, Tuba Hacıbekiroğlu, Fevzi Altuntaş
Abstract: Significant improvements in the prognosis of Multiple Myeloma(MM) have recently observed in the era of novel agents. Induction treatment, including new agents followed by conditioning regimen and upfront autologous stem cell transplantation(ASCT), has been accepted as the standard treatment approach for newly diagnosed eligible MM patients. Despite novel agents, upfront ASCT is still superior to conventional chemotherapy alone. Previous studies revealed that the duration between ASCT and relapse had predicted overall survival(OS), and meantime, it was widely used to determine the potential benefit from a second ASCT. However, the majority of the data collected reflects the treatment modalities before novel agents. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of post-transplantation early relapse(ER) on survival in the era of novel agents. The results of 155 MM patients that underwent ASCT at our center between January 2010 and May 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. The median follow-up duration was 20 months in the ER group, 27 months in the non-ER group, and 24 months in all patients. 33.3% of patients in the ER group and 71.4% of patients in the non-ER group were alive at the time of analysis. Median OS was 20.77±3.66 months in the ER group and 40.89±4.21 months in the non-ER group. We found a statistically significant relationship between the ER and the poor OS (p:

  • Increased Monocyte Count is Related to the Development of Atrial
Fibrillation in Subjects with Heart Failure

    • Authors: Recep Kurt, Anıl Şahin
Abstract: Determining subjects with heart failure (HF), who have a high risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF), is crucial since it is related to an increase in morbidity and mortality. The importance of an increase in inflammatory response cannot be ignored in developing AF in subjects with HF. This study’s goal was to evaluate the relationship between the development of AF and monocyte count, the main components of the inflammatory response, in subjects with HF. Medical data of 158 subjects in total with sinus rhythm, admitted to the emergency department and hospitalized with systolic HF between January 2009 and February 2014, were analyzed prospectively. All the subjects followed up in terms of the development of AF. The subjects separated into two groups according to their rhythm at the end of the follow-up period. Group 1 included subjects who maintained sinus rhythm, while Group 2 included subjects with AF. Echocardiographic findings and laboratory data were collected. No statistically significant difference was determined between the groups concerning age, sex (p=0.056), hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and smoking status. The two groups differed significantly regarding the presence of moderate-to-severe mitral regurgitation (MR) [32 (28%) vs. 22 (51%), p=0.010] and monocyte count [560 (20-3100) vs. 800 (380-1510) μL, p

  • Stability of Routine Hematology Sample Using The Medonic M-Series Analyzer

    • Authors: Eva Ayu Maharani, Dewi Astuti
Abstract: Routine hematology tests (Hb, Hct, RBC, WBC, PLT) generally done by automation methods using a hematology analyzer. Ideally, the examinations should be done as soon as possible, although, in some circumstances, it can be delayed. Based on the literature, the sample for routine hematology testing should be processed within 4 – 8 hours of venesection. Some studies revealed that the sample could be stored for up to 48 hours, and it can be influenced by the technology applied to the hematology analyzer. Studies conducted to see the stability of the samples using a hematology analyzer with impedance technology. Tests performed on whole blood samples collected from 12 ostensibly healthy individuals, immediately after collection (fresh sample,
