  • Kinetic Analysis of Drop Landing: Comparison of Volleyball Players and
           Novice Subjects

    • Authors: UGUR YILMAZ; HÜSEYİN ÇELİK ÇELİK, PINAR ARPINAR AVŞAR
Abstract: Thisstudy investigates landing kinetics and postural stability of skilledvolleyball players (n=6) and novice subjects (n=6). 12 healthyyoung females voluntarily participated in the study. The amplitude and temporalprofile of the ground reaction forces (GRFs) which correspond to double-leglanding from a drop and subsequent 20-s quiet stance were analyzed. Dynamic andstatic postural stability performances were determined. Contact time (t0),maximal vertical GRF (VGRFmax), time to VGRFmax (tmax)and Loading Rate (LR) were calculated. The time that elapsed from t0until the VGRF reaches to one body weight was determined (tDS:dynamicpostural stability duration). Center of Pressure (COP) Velocity (COPV),Ellipse Area (EA), and Range were calculated from the COP trajectory during thequiet stance phase (tSS:static postural stability period). MannWhitney U test was used to compare VGRFmax, dynamic and staticpostural stability between groups. Whereas, VGRFmax (p=0.015)and LR (p=0.004) were found to be lower, tDS (p=0.001)took longer in volleyball players. The differences between groups werestatistically significant. There was a tendency to increase in tDSwith the increase in VGRFmax and LR. Spearman rank correlation analysisrevealed a moderate and a weak negative correlation between tDS withboth VGRFmax (rs=-0.461, p<0.001) and LR (rs=-0.276, p<0.001)respectively. COP parameters for quiet stance were not significantly differentbetween groups. Contrary to COPV, COP EA and Range were slightlyhigher in the novice group. The results of this study provide further insightinto postural control strategies in skilled and novice subjects which might berelated with vulnerability to potential musculoskeletal injuries and differencesin postural stability performances.

  • The Relationship Between Some Performance Components and Competition
Ranking in Elite Badminton Players: Gender Comparison

    • Authors: Sinem Hazır; Melih Salman, Erhan Devrilmez, Sadık Şatıroğlu
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationshipbetween some performance components and competition rankings and to make acomparison between genders in elite badminton players. Eleven female (Age: 19.5± 2.5 years, Height: 166.7 ± 8.2 cm, Body Weight: 58.2 ± 8.1 kg) and 9 male(Age: 20.2 ± 2.2 years, Height: 177.3 ± 5.8 cm, Body Weight: 74.5 ± 6.2 kg) playerswho competed at Turkish National Championship were participated in this study.Anthropometric measurements, hand grip, speed, agility, vertical and squatjumps, anaerobic power, anaerobic capacity and isokinetic strength weremeasured. After a week from these measurements players competed at theChampionship. According to comparative results between genders there weresimilarities at ectomorphy and mesomorphy in anthropometric measurements;fatique index and elastic strength in motor skills (p>0.05). According tothe Spearman Correlation Analysis, Championship rankings were significantlycorrelated with body weigtht (rs=-.721; p=0.019), lean body weight (rs=-.648;p=0.43), 180 °/s dominant shoulder external rotation (rs=-.760;p=0.011),60 and 180 °/s knee extension (rs=-.782; p=0.008; rs=-.879;p=0.001 respectively), 180 °/s knee flexion sum of peak torque strength  (rs=-.709;p=0.022) in femaleplayers. On the other hand in males, there was a significant correlation onlyin between lean body mass and  anaerobiccapacity  and rankings, (rs=-.793;p=0.033; rs=-.847; p=0.016 respectively). As a conclusion; it wasfound that better position in ranking was related to upper and lower bodyisokinetic strength, body weight and lean body mass in female players andhigher lean body mass and anaerobic capacity in male players.

  • Analysis of Home Teams Advantage in Turkish Basketball Super League with
           Bradley-Terry Model

    • Authors: Serpil Aktaş; Melike Bahçecitapar, Rıfat Ergan
Abstract: The aim ofthis study is to investigate the effect of the status of being a home team onthe basketball competition results in Turkish Basketball Super League by usingBradley-Terry model. Bradley-Terry model is a probability model that cananalyze all pairwise comparisons and estimates the probability that thespecific team is the winner in any sport competition. The main feature of thismodel is that it can be used for the analysis of competitions which are notended in a draw.  Recently, it has beenfrequently used especially to calculate the home advantage of team. The resultsof the competitions between men’s basketball teams of Beşiktaş Gymnasium Club,Anadolu Efes, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Türk Telekom and Karşıyaka Sports Clubsin the Turkey Basketball Super League over 25 seasons between 1991-2016 wereanalyzed in this study. The data used in the study was obtained from theofficial website of Turkish Basketball League (TBL). The data was interpretedby both analyzing Bradley-Terry model and calculating frequency and percentagevalues in SAS 9.4 program. In total of 750 competitions between 6 teams, theteam having the highest number of winnings is Anadolu Efes. On the other hand, AnadoluEfes and Türk Telekom are teams having the highest (82%) and lowest (50%)percentages, respectively, in terms of winning numbers for all competitionswhere they are home teams. In this study, in addition to calculate the winningprobabilities of teams over all competition results, comments were also made bytaking into account the home advantage of teams. It was concluded that thestatus of a home team has a significant effect of being the winner of the basketballcompetition. The probability of winning of  the home team in Turkish Basketball SuperLeague was found to be 63% by Bradley-Terry model.

  • Reliability and Validity of Football Common Content Knowledge Test for
           Physical Education Teachers

    • Authors: Fatih Dervent; Erhan Devrilmez, Mustafa Levent İnce, Phillip Ward
Abstract: Common content knowledge(CCK) is comprised of knowledge of rules, techniques, and tactics. In order toteach effectively, physical education teachers need to possess CCK. Literaturereview revealed few validated CCK tests including CCK tests for football. Thepurpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and the validity ofFootball CCK Test for physical education teachers. 241 students enrolled in 11different physical education teacher education departments participated in thestudy. The expert group of experienced coaches, physical education teachers, senior lecturers, program development and language experts formed the CCK testbased on the content knowledge framework for physical education (Ward, 2009)using a table of specification. There were 30 multiple-choice questions in theFootball CCK Test. Rasch model was used to evaluate the reliability and thevalidity of the test. Twenty-four of 30 questions demonstrated good item-modelfit. Those items that had poor item-model fit might be revised. Item separation(6.93) and item reliability (.98) values were moderately high that showed highinternal consistency. The Rasch analysis provides evidence that thetest is areliable and valid CCK test for football.
