  • Outplaying opponents—a differential perspective on passes using
           position data
    • Abstract: Abstract In recent years, the availability of new tracking technologies has enabled new perspectives on passes played in football. One such perspective includes measuring the number of opponents that are outplayed by a pass (NOO). Various studies substantiate that this measure qualifies as one aspect of the passes’ offensive quality. Given the latent consensus that high-NOO passes indicate clever passing decisions, one aim of this study was to analyze how athletes prioritize contextually embedded passing options when playing passes that differ with regard to their NOO. Another aim was to determine the contributions of pass receivers to completing passes with different NOOs. To this end, position- and speed-related features of 12,411 passing options from 1,379 passing situations tracked during championship matches were analyzed. Overall, the findings indicate that decisions to play high NOO passes differ from decisions to play low NOO passes with regard to how contextually embedded passing options are prioritized. The passes’ NOOs increased as the decision-makers’ tendency to pass to loosely defended team members with open passing lanes and positions near the ball carrier decreased. Furthermore, higher physical contributions on the part of the pass receivers were observed when pass receivers completed passes with higher NOOs. Based on the findings, passes with a high NOO could be considered risky passes. The presented approach could be adopted to further analyze the circumstances that allow athletes to play such passes compared with those that absolutely do not, which could represent an important step concerning educational programs in football.

  • Game characteristics in elite para table tennis
    • Abstract: Abstract This study focuses on the rally length and the impact of the serve, i. e. the winning probability when serving, in elite para table tennis (class 1–10) to provide a better insight in the task characteristics of para table tennis. The influences of sex and the level of impairment and their possible interactions are studied. Matches (n = 227) of elite para table tennis players (class 1–10) ranked in the top 20 of the world ranking lists in their class were analysed. The results of this study revealed a significant main effect of sex with small effect sizes in the three-factorial model and medium to large effect sizes in the individual comparisons on the rally length and the winning probabilities directly from service and first attack. Moreover, an interaction effect was also found of sex and sitting/standing for the same outcomes with small (winning probabilities) to medium (rally length) effect sizes. Finally, the severity of class 1 affected these outcomes significantly with large effect sizes, when comparing the outcomes of this class to the ones of the other sitting classes in male players. In conclusion, due to shorter rallies and a high direct impact of the serve for all female sitting players and for male sitting and standing para players with the highest level of impairments, serve and especially receive training should be an important part of the training for these para table tennis players.

  • Germany’s 2018 report card on physical activity for children and
           youth
    • Abstract: Abstract The German Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth 2018 provides a summary and a comprehensive evaluation of physical activity levels and correlated indicators using the Active Healthy Kids Canada grading framework. The Report Card aims to benchmark the national actions promoting physical activity in children and youth in Germany with the overarching goal to raise awareness for the promotion of physical activity. The 2018 German Report Card focuses on adherence to physical activity and sedentary time recommendations identified by an expert panel. Additionally, settings and sources of influence as well as strategies and investments towards physical activity are analyzed. Sources included national surveys, peer-reviewed literature, as well as government and non-government reports. The expert panel assigned grades to the ten Report Card indicators using existing benchmarks. Most children and youth in Germany failed to meet the World Health Organization recommendation for physical activity and engaged in high levels of sedentary behaviours despite favourable conditions within the relevant settings (e. g., schools). Therefore, we assigned poor grades for most behavioural indicators (“overall physical activity”, “sedentary behaviour”, “active play” and “active transportation”) with the exception of “organized sport participation”. It was not possible to assign grades for two indicators—“physical fitness” and “government”—due to insufficient evidence. The fact that no evaluated government policy exists to promote physical activity in children and youth signals a need for further government action to promote physical activity and create environments that support healthy active living among children and youth in Germany.

  • Musculoskeletal capacity and serve mechanics in professional women’s
           tennis players
    • Abstract: Abstract It has been theorized that incorporating strength, speed, and flexibility training regimes may improve the quality of the tennis serve. Efficient stroke quality during the serve improves velocity and diminishes injury risk in tennis players. However, no study in tennis has identified whether adequate musculoskeletal capacity is a factor that helps drive optimal serve mechanics. The aim of this study was to determine whether musculoskeletal capacity could predict efficient serve mechanics. A total of 46 professional women’s tennis players (age: 26 ± 3 years, body mass: 65 ± 5 kg, height: 1.74 ± 0.06 m) were studied. Musculoskeletal capacity parameters were evaluated by the tennis specific screen (TSS) with strength and flexibility measures. Serve mechanics were evaluated using the observational tennis serve analysis (OTSA) tool. The OTSA is scored using a 0–9 system. Multiple regression analysis revealed scapular dyskinesis on the non-dominant side during flexion to be predictive of OTSA score (r2 = 0.14, p-value = 0.008). However, the correlation is weak (r = 0.38), rendering a non-clinically significant relationship between scapular dyskinesis and serve mechanics. None of the other musculoskeletal parameters generated significant relationships to serve mechanics. This study demonstrated that in professional women’s tennis players there is no meaningful relationship between the TSS measurements and OTSA scores. In conclusion, musculoskeletal capacity and serve mechanics are independent of each another, and should be addressed separately.

  • Variability of competition results during one season in swimming
    • Abstract: Aims The purpose of this study was to investigate how performance of elite swimmers develop during one season from competition to competition. A small variability of performance has been suggested to correlate with superior competition results, which is why understanding the connection between performance and its variability is interesting for sports science researchers, coaches, and athletes alike. Methods We analysed all competitions of ten European Olympic medallists and nine German Olympic swimmers in an eight-month competition period culminating in the Rio Olympics in 2016. We analysed the variability in performance using the coefficient of variation (CV). Results We estimated CVs for German (0.68%) and European (0.52%) athletes, as well as for certain subgroups (sprinters [0.60%], middle distance athletes [0.45%], males [0.57%], females [0.40%]). The variability decreased from the first section of the measurement to its end period by 71%. Conclusion We conclude that a small performance variability is an important indicator for peaking performance at the season’s major event.

  • Parental (over-)ambition in competitive youth sport
    • Abstract: Abstract Parental investments in competitive youth sport are just as indispensable as manifold. Parental ambition against this background can be thought as a particular, inner psychic resource which is brought into the young athletes’ career in a similar way just like periodic chauffeur services or financial support. Parental ambition can be defined as an increased achievement motivation by the guardians; it is associated with high expectations and striving for control of the children. In this article, the attempt is to make plausible both parental ambition and parental over-ambition by using various theoretical models. Regarding the emergence of an innocuous or possibly functional type of ambition and the pathological form of over-ambition, an inadequate personality development in over-ambitious parents is believed to be the distinctive feature. In order to understand better the genesis and consequences of excessive parental ambition, thoughts are presented which are psychoanalytic in nature. In this context, the role-theory by the German family therapist Horst-Eberhard Richter and Heinz Kohut’s self-psychology are fundamental for providing explanatory performance. Moreover, the expectancy-value model by the pedagogical psychologist Jacquelynne S. Eccles has been proven useful in order to account for interindividual and interfamilial variations in parental ambition on an everyday basis. Finally, implications for scientific research and sport practice are presented.

  • Physical Activity: Analysen zum Aktivitätsniveau von Schülerinnen und
           Schülern im Förderschwerpunkt Sehen in Deutschland
    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Studie verfolgt das Ziel, erstmalig im deutschen Sprachraum (1) die tägliche körperliche Aktivität sowie das körperliche Aktivitätsniveau im Sportunterricht, (2) die Körperzusammensetzung sowie (3) die subjektive Beurteilung des emotionalen Wohlbefindens von Schülerinnen und Schülern mit dem Förderschwerpunkt Sehen an einer Förderschule (n = 115) mit sehenden Schülerinnen und Schülern an einer allgemeinen Schule (n = 118) zu vergleichen. Zudem wurde die Frage verfolgt, ob der Grad des Sehvermögens in einem Zusammenhang mit den genannten Parametern steht. Es zeigt sich, dass die sehbehinderten und blinden Studienteilnehmer und -teilnehmerinnen in allen erhobenen Parametern mindestens vergleichbare Werte erreichen konnten. Im Vergleich zur sehenden Kontrollgruppe zeigten die sehbehinderten und blinden Schülerinnen und Schüler weder insuffiziente Bewegungsprofile, noch schlechtere Körperzusammensetzungen. Zudem lagen bei den Bewegungsprofilen der sehbehinderten und blinden Schülerinnen und Schüler im und außerhalb des Sportunterrichts keine signifikanten Zusammenhänge mit dem Grad des Sehvermögens vor.

  • Beurteilung des Erfolgs in der Nachwuchsausbildung: Eine empirische
           Analyse von Schweizer Fußballclubs
    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Verschiedene Indikatoren belegen augenscheinlich den Erfolg der Schweiz in der Nachwuchsausbildung im Profifußball. Diese sind jedoch nicht wissenschaftlich gestützt, und es liegen weiterhin keine Informationen vor, welche Clubs zum Erfolg der Schweiz beitragen. Der Beitrag geht zunächst der Frage nach, welche Indikatoren für die Beurteilung des Erfolgs in der Nachwuchsausbildung herangezogen werden können, und prüft auf Basis dieser Erkenntnisse im empirischen Teil der Arbeit, welche europäischen Länder und welche Profi-Fußballclubs in der Schweiz erfolgreich Nachwuchsspieler ausbilden. In die Analyse sind 652 Spielerdaten sowie Kennzahlen zu ausgewählten Indikatoren von 18 Clubs eingeflossen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass zwischen 2000 und 2016 der FC Basel, der FC Zürich, der GC Zürich, Servette FC sowie der FC Sion in der Nachwuchsausbildung in der Schweiz am erfolgreichsten waren. Weiterhin bilden die Erkenntnisse der Analyse eine wichtige Grundlage für eine zukünftige Evaluation von Erfolgsfaktoren auf Ebene der einzelnen Clubs.

  • Unterrichtsbeispiele vergleichen
    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Dem Bearbeiten von Unterrichtsbeispielen wird ein großes Lernpotenzial für den Kompetenzerwerb angehender Sportlehrkräfte zugesprochen. Unklar ist jedoch, inwieweit eher gelungene oder eher problematische Unterrichtsbeispiele bearbeitet werden sollten. Erste Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass der Vergleich gelungener und problematischer Unterrichtsbeispiele dem Bearbeiten von nur gelungenen oder nur problematischen Unterrichtsbeispielen überlegen ist. Offen ist jedoch, ob der Vergleich nur gelungener Unterrichtsbeispiele ebenso wirksam ist. Zudem wird angenommen, dass affektiv-motivationale Variablen unterschiedliche Lernzuwächse beim Lernen aus Beispielen erklären, was jedoch für die Lehrerbildung ebenso offen ist. Diese Fragen werden durch eine experimentelle Studie mit Pre-Interventions-Post-Design untersucht: Es wurden 81 Sportlehramtsstudierende randomisiert auf zwei Experimentalgruppen verteilt, in denen entweder problematische vs. gelungene oder gelungene vs. gelungene Unterrichtsbeispiele verglichen wurden. Als abhängige Variable wurde das Planen der Sportlehrkräfte im Hinblick auf einen Unterricht betrachtet, der ein lehrerunterstütztes selbstkontrolliertes Lernen der Schülerinnen und Schüler im Sportunterricht zulässt. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass das Reflektieren von Unterrichtsbeispielen zu einer besseren Planung der Sportlehramtsstudierenden führt. Höhere Zuwächse liegen dabei bei denjenigen vor, die ausschließlich gelungenen Unterricht miteinander verglichen, als diejenigen, die gelungenen und problematischen Unterricht betrachteten. Es konnten keine Effekte hinsichtlich der affektiv-motivationalen Variablem identifiziert werden. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung für die (Sport‑)Lehrerbildung diskutiert.

  • eSport „ist“ nicht Sport – eSport und Sport haben
           Bedeutungen
    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Kein Problem hat denorganisierten Sport, die Sportwissenschaft und die Sportpolitik in der jüngsten Vergangenheit so beschäftigt wie die Frage, ob eSport bzw. eGaming Sport ist oder nicht. Dabei hat sich die Diskussion über die Position des DOSB (Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund) weitgehend auf einen Schlagabtausch mit apodiktischen Aussagen beschränkt. Auf sprachwissenschaftliche Voraussetzungen ist kaum eingegangen worden. Bezeichnend für den Diskussionsstand ist, dass bisher das Fehlen einer anerkannten Definition von Sport bemängelt wird, ohne sich kundig zu machen, ob dies überhaupt möglich, sinnvoll oder notwendig ist. Ziel des Beitrags ist zunächst eine Offenlegung der sprachlogischen Grundlagen für Definitionen bzw. die Zuschreibung von Bedeutungen allgemein, um dann mögliche Antworten auf die Fragen zum Verhältnis von eSport bzw. eGaming und Sport zur Diskussion zu stellen. Die adäquate Grundlage bilden die Philosophie der idealen und die der normalen Sprache sowie das erfahrungswissenschaftliche psychologisch-linguistische Prototypenmodell. Den Ansätzen ist gemeinsam, dass sie die Basis für Entscheidungen bieten, für welche Lebensbereiche die eSport-Frage mit Hilfe von Definitionen getroffen werden muss und für welche Lebensbereiche stattdessen auf die Alternative der Bedeutungszuschreibung im Rahmen der normalen Sprache zurückgegriffen werden kann. Eine Definition von Sport ist gerechtfertigt für rechtsfähige Organisationen wie den DOSB, während dieser Ansatz für die alltagssprachliche Welt und z. B. auch für die Gegenstandsbeschreibung der Sportwissenschaft nicht angemessen erscheint. In dem Beitrag werden in historischer und in systematischer Perspektive Merkmale bzw. Bedeutungen des Sports zur Diskussion gestellt, auf die sowohl für die normative Definition der Sportorganisationen als auch für die Alltagssprache zurückgegriffen werden kann.

  • Influence of social facilitation on learning development using a Wii
           Balanceboard™
    • Abstract: Abstract The aim of this study is to examine if, and under which interaction circumstances, social facilitation occurs. Therefore, we used an exergame task in an experimental study design in which 70 students participated. The task to be performed involved a Nintendo Wii Balanceboard™. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two social conditions: observer or opponent. Results of the two analyses showed that there was only a significance difference in the condition between individual vs. opponent. Based on these results, we propose to create circumstances in the rehabilitation process, using exergames in such a way that patients perceive their activity as social interaction with others.

  • “Kick it like Ronaldo”: a cross-sectional study of focus of attention
           effects during learning of a soccer knuckle ball free kick technique
    • Abstract: Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether soccer free kick training improves the knuckle ball technique of adolescent and adult male soccer players after a three week training period using either internal or external focus of attention instructions. Much evidence has been gathered in the literature showing that an external focus of attention (i.e., focus on the movement effects) is more effective than an internal focus (i.e., focus on the movements themselves) during learning. In the present study, 56 soccer players (20 adolescents and 36 adults) completed a free kick training program for which attentional focus (internal vs. external) was manipulated. Results indicated that the external focus group showed greater improvements compared to the internal focus group. These findings therefore provide further support for the advantages of external focus of attention instructions during skill acquisition and further show that this remains true for prolonged training periods.

    • Abstract: Abstract The attitude of teachers is considered important for successful inclusive physical education (PE); however, no reliable instrument has been developed to assess German PE teachers’ subject-specific attitude toward inclusive PE or to determine factors that influence it. In this paper, we reanalyze data gathered from a survey of 900 PE teachers in North Rhine–Westphalia and Hesse, Germany to assess the teachers’ subject-specific attitude toward inclusive PE and identify institution- and person-related factors that may have influenced it. We measure the factorial and convergent validity of the scale used in that survey to assess PE teachers’ attitude by conducting structural equation modelling, and we take into account the complex interdependence of institution- and person-related factors. Results indicate that both factorial and convergent validity of the scale were good. While amount of work experience, teaching conditions for (inclusive) PE, and private experience with people with disabilities had a significant influence on the PE teachers’ attitude toward inclusive PE, (inclusion-related) collaboration among PE teachers and occupational stress did not.

  • Evaluation of mass-reach physical activity campaigns: considering
           automatic processes
    • Abstract: Abstract Mass-reach physical activity campaigns are usually evaluated based on the assumption that behavior change is an outcome of higher-level cognitive operations such as intentions. However, elements in a mass-reach physical activity promotion campaign may automatically attract attention or activate associated concepts; these, in turn, can influence targeted attitudes, intentions, or behavior. Repeated exposure to campaigns may also create physical activity associations. However, there is limited guidance for the inclusion of measurement of automatic processes when evaluating campaigns. The purpose of this article is to argue that automatic processes should be considered when evaluating mass-reach physical activity promotion campaigns, and to propose hypotheses regarding how automatic processes may relate to campaign effects. The proposed hypotheses build on the physical activity-specific hierarchy-of-effects model, which has been used to evaluate mass-reach campaigns. Points along the hierarchy of effects are suggested where automatic processes may be incorporated into the evaluation of mass-reach physical activity promotion campaigns. Thus, broad hypotheses are offered regarding how automatic processes can be moderators of campaign effects or can emerge as a result of the campaign. By testing the proposed hypotheses, it is hoped that mass-reach physical activity promotion campaigns can be better understood with the goal of having more effective campaigns.

  • Warum entscheiden sich Studierende für ein Lehramtsstudium'
    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Motivation für die Aufnahme eines Lehramtsstudiums gilt in der einschlägigen Forschung als eine persönliche Voraussetzung für die professionelle Entwicklung. Ausgehend von der Frage nach der Homogenität von Studierenden hinsichtlich ihrer Beweggründe für die Wahlentscheidung für ein Lehramtsstudium setzt sich dieser Beitrag damit auseinander, warum sich Sportstudierende für ein Lehramtsstudium entschieden haben, und richtet dabei den Blick auf potenzielle Spezifika der Wahlentscheidung für ein Lehramtsstudium gegenüber Lehramtsstudierenden mit dem Fach Mathematik. Es wurden 405 Lehramtsstudierende mit dem Fach Sport mit 964 Lehramtsstudierenden mit dem Fach Mathematik hinsichtlich ihrer Lehramtsstudienwahlmotivation verglichen. Übereinstimmend mit anderen Befunden sind bei Sportstudierenden, ebenso wie für Mathematikstudierende, intrinsische Motivationsfacetten stärker ausgeprägt als extrinsische Facetten der Studienwahlmotivation. Im Stichprobenvergleich zeigen sich bedeutsame Unterschiede hinsichtlich verschiedener Facetten der Studienwahlmotivation. So hat die Fähigkeitsüberzeugung bei Sportstudierenden eine geringere Bedeutsamkeit für die Wahl ihres Studiums als bei Mathematikstudierenden. Gleichzeitig messen Sportstudierende der wahrgenommenen geringen Schwierigkeit des Lehramtsstudiums sowie finanziellen Nützlichkeit jeweils eine größere Bedeutsamkeit bei, als dies Mathematikstudierende tun. Für die Fähigkeitsüberzeugung und die antizipierte geringere Schwierigkeit des Studiums zeigt sich zudem, dass der beobachtete Unterschied zwischen den Fächern bei sportstudierenden Männern ausgeprägter ist als bei sportstudierenden Frauen.

  • Is there an association between variables of static and dynamic postural
           control in adolescent athletes with back pain'
    • Abstract: Abstract An association between static and dynamic postural control exists in adults with back pain. We aimed to determine whether this association also exists in adolescent athletes with the same condition. In all, 128 athletes with and without back pain performed three measurements of 15 s of static (one-legged stance) and dynamic (star excursion balance test) postural control tests. All subjects and a matched subgroup of athletes with and without back pain were analyzed. The smallest center of pressure mediolateral and anterior–posterior displacements (mm) and normalized highest reach distance were the outcome measures. No association was found between variables of the static and dynamic tests for all subjects and the matched group with and without back pain. The control of static and dynamic posture in adolescent athletes with and without back pain might not be related.

    • Abstract: Zusammenfassung Der häufig diskutierte Theorie-Praxis-Graben ist eine Metapher, die aus einer sportwissenschaftlichen Perspektive die schwierige Kommunikation und fehlende Akzeptanz in der Sportpraxis beschreibt. Aus einer sportpraktischen Perspektive handelt es sich um einen Praxis-Theorie-Graben in der Sportwissenschaft, der jedoch mit denselben Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert ist. Der Anspruch einer anwendungsnahen Sportwissenschaft und damit das Überwinden des Grabens aus beiden Richtungen bedingt die explizite Wertschätzung der jeweils anderen Expertise bzw. domainspezifischen Erfahrung und die Akzeptanz der eigenen Erfahrungsgrenzen in einem konstruktiven und zielführenden Diskurs.
