  • JAMA Dermatology
    • Abstract: Mission Statement: JAMA Dermatology publishes information concerning the skin, its diseases, and their treatment. Its mission is to explicate the structure and function of the skin and its diseases and the art of using this information to deliver optimal medical and surgical care to the patient. We attempt to enhance the understanding of cutaneous pathophysiology and improve the clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat skin disorders. This journal has a particular interest in publishing clinical and laboratory studies that reveal new information pertinent to the interests and needs of the medical dermatologist, dermatologic surgeon, and all those concerned with state-of-the-art care of cutaneous disease. We believe that knowledge derived from well-designed clinical trials and studies of cost-effectiveness are especially important for improving the practice of dermatology. Studies that increase the understanding of the outcome of treatment or the means by which the burden of dermatologic disease can be measured and reduced to promote the health of patients with skin disease will receive special priority. The journal regularly publishes reports on clinical investigations, editorials, and reviews. It also features reports and discussions on clinicopathologic correlations; clinical disorders of unique didactic value; pharmacologic, medical and surgical therapeutics; and ethical, moral, socioeconomic, and political issues.

Abstract: Healthy habits established in adolescence have the potential to produce lifelong dividends. Intervening with adolescents can be challenging because they are in developmental transition, their behavior is uniquely affected by their social environment, and their communication technologies and habits differ from those of adults. Skin cancer prevention in adolescents has been a particularly perplexing challenge because high-risk behavior (eg, tanning) is often socially rewarded. Most national surveys reveal that fewer than half of school-aged children regularly use sun protection when outdoors. Traditional school-based educational programs have resulted in improved awareness of sun protection and positive attitudes toward its use but rarely translate into behavior change. Although it is important to cast school-based programs within larger community settings such as pools, camps, and beaches, adolescents spend far more time in classrooms, which provide the potential for greater effect, but only if we can truly engage and motivate them.

  • How Dermatologists Can Learn and Contribute at the Leading Edge of the
           COVID-19 Global Pandemic
    • Authors: Madigan LM; Micheletti RG, Shinkai K.
      Pages: 733 - 734
Abstract: In this issue of JAMA Dermatology, clinical cases and images of rashes in patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are presented. Although these early observations are not comprehensive of all skin manifestations seen, our intention in publishing them is to help dermatologists recognize emerging patterns of rashes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The reported prevalence of cutaneous signs in association with this pandemic is conflicting; one study reported a rash in only 0.2% of a cohort of Chinese patients, whereas the estimated prevalence in a cross-sectional Italian study was 20.4%. In the latter study, performed by dermatologists, the cutaneous manifestations were most commonly described as an erythematous rash; however, a range of additional morphologic features were observed, including generalized urticaria and vesicular eruptions. A predilection for the trunk was also noted. It may not be possible to determine the exact prevalence of skin findings in infected patients until serologic testing is more widely available, given that some individuals may lack the typical respiratory signs of COVID-19.

  • Explanation of Errors in Population Numbers and Missing Data in Studies of
Lifetime Skin Cancer Associated With Sexual Orientation and Gender
           Identity

      Pages: 822 - 823
Abstract: To the Editor We write to report errors that occurred in 2 studies that we published online on February 12, 2020, and in the April issue of JAMA Dermatology: “Association Between Sexual Orientation and Lifetime Prevalence of Skin Cancer in the United States” and “Gender Identity and Lifetime Prevalence of Skin Cancer in the United States.” These were cross-sectional studies that analyzed data from annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys of adults aged 18 years and older who self-identified as being heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual from 2014 through 2018. Both measured self-reported lifetime history of skin cancer. The first study evaluated the association between sexual orientation and lifetime prevalence of skin cancer, and the second study evaluated skin cancer history by gender identity. In the first article, we reported that gay and bisexual men had an increased self-reported lifetime prevalence of skin cancer compared with the prevalence among heterosexual men. In the second article, we reported that compared with cisgender men, gender nonconforming individuals, but not transgender men or women, had a higher self-reported lifetime prevalence of skin cancer.

  • Errors in Population Numbers and Missing Data
    • Pages: 823 - 823
Abstract: In the Brief Report titled “Association Between Sexual Orientation and Lifetime Prevalence of Skin Cancer in the United States” and the Research Letter titled “Gender Identity and Lifetime Prevalence of Skin Cancer in the United States,” published in the April issue of JAMA Dermatology, there were errors in population numbers and missing data in the text and tables of both studies. These errors were reflected in the Editorial “Sexual and Gender Minority Populations and Skin Cancer—New Data and Renewed Priorities” published in the same issue. These errors did not affect any reported conclusions and are explained in greater detail in a Letter to the Editor in this issue of JAMA Dermatology. All 3 articles have been corrected online.
