- About the legend of Alexandria: Epiphanius, De mensuris et

Abstract: A new interpretation of a passage of Epiphanius’ De mensuris et ponderibus, chapter 9 is proposed. Considering the text resulting from the manuscript tradition and from the corrections made by the editors of Epiphanius, we gain two conclusions: 1) the text of the older codices Vaticani is not correct for the sense; 2) the better text of a group of later codices, that is satisfying for the sense and for the grammar, was misunderstood by some editors, producing a wrong interpretation of the whole passage: the king Ptolemy Philadelphus knew from Demetrius Phalereus that existed a people, ancestor of the Romans, called Latins by the Greeks of the early III century b.C. If this is true, the king may have been in search of the Latins’ books for his library.

- Pagination printed by Aldus Manutius

Abstract: Pagination is an important element of the modern book, but the development of pagination and printing techniques have not been adequately studied. The author of this paper discusses pagination by Aldus Manutius (ca. 1450-1515) and his influence on the contemporary printers. Aldus printed 17 paginated books between 1499 and 1514, of which 13 books were printed in Greek (Table 1). His pagination can be divided into three types. Type A comprises books in which the page numbers were printed at the rightmost point of the headline on the recto page and at the leftmost point of the headline on the verso page. Type B comprises books in which the page numbers were printed in the middle of the headline on both the recto and verso pages. Type C comprises books in which the page numbers were printed at the rightmost point of the headline on both the recto and verso pages (Figure 1). Aldus’ preferred Type A and trialled Type B and C paginations when printing in octavo format. He tested all these types until 1508. Among these 17 paginated books, Aldus provided table of contents to nine books (Nos 2, 4, 6-8, and 12-15) and provided index to two books (Nos 1 and 6). But other seven books (Nos 3, 5, 9-11 and 16-17) were not provided any table of contents and index. It is certain that Aldus’s pagination was mainly intended to indicate the positions of the text by page numbers in a table of contents. His works influenced directly Lyon, Florence, and Basel. Johann Froben of Basel (ca. 1460-1527) printed many paginated books including Erasmus’s works, and Greek and Roman classics (Figure 3). Due to Froben’s efforts, pagination spread throughout the Rhine River Basin, Paris, and Antwerp until 1520, and then appeared at some leading centres of printing in East and South Germany, and England (Table 2).

- «In scrineis» of Monna Caterina: The Books of Stefano di Nello

Abstract: In the unpublished inventory of «bona et iura», which belonged to Stefano Fatinelli (d. 1418), a Lucchese merchant of high lineage, are recorded more than sixty codes which were kept «in scrineis domine Caterine», that is Caterina Martini, widow of the late Stefano. This instrumentum is kept in a notarial protocol of the Lucca State Archive; its discovery allowed to conduct various researches, based on unpublished materials, the results of which are presented here. The essay is divided into three paragraphs. The first one outlines Fatinelli’s profile, through the analysis of his will and the use of other sources, including a manuscript bearer of the life of Saint Zita (d. 1278), the humble servant who worked for the powerful Fatinelli family. The second paragraph is dedicated to the illustration of the inventory and its contextualization: indeed, it was drawn up following a petition, requested by a relative of the late Stefano to the Vicar of the Podestà of Lucca, in order to protect the infant heir to a considerable patrimony. The last paragraph is reserved for books: they are almost camouflaged in the inventory, which is composed by a long theory of land, buildings, household linen, precious fabrics, various furnishings, lists of debtors, etc. belonged to the deceased one. The critical edition of the books inventory items is preceded by some reflections thanks to which the library’s “cultural gradient” is identified. The short list is evidence of a library collection now lost, of which two manuscripts are still recognised. Finally, the appendix contains Stefano Fatinelli’s will and the aforementioned petition. This essay gives the image of one of the private libraries that, starting from the XIVth Century, acquired importance in Lucca. Additionally, it helps to outline the overall picture of the circulation of books and cultural interests within and beyond the city walls in the early fifteenth century.

Abstract: The essay reconstructs the history of the Capuchin bibliography whose origins are erroneously identified with the publication of the Bibliotheca of Dionisio da Genova, in 1680, or even with that of Bernardo da Bologna, in 1747. Through the study of the various bibliographies of the Order it was attempted to recognize the relationships that the bibliographies have between them (the ones following the previous ones) allowing to recover the ranks of Capuchin history to the present day.

- An introduction to the incunabula collection of Biblioteca Diocesana in
Aosta. With a revision of the description of a fifteenth century edition

Abstract: Aosta’s Biblioteca Diocesana owns a collection of about 150 incunabula wich have been cataloged in the middle of the last century. The section has been recently reexamined and all the provenance informations are now available in Material Evidence in Incunabula (MEI) database. The activity has made possible to identify ancient owners of incunbula now in the library and helped the study about the circulation of book in Aosta Valley. The research also led to discovery a unknown sixteenth-century edition, which is here described and assigned to the typography of Johann Besicken. A bibliographical revision of the description of a fifteenth-century edition of De consolatione philosophiae printed in Lyons by Guillaume Le Roy is also given.

Abstract: The paper examines some unpublished documents concerning Giuseppe Fumagalli preserved in the archive of the Italian Library Association, presenting and commenting (in view of an integral publication) the correspondence between Fumagalli and Vittorio Camerani (1898-1961), sincere friends from the thirties of the twentieth century. The letters inform us that shortly before his death, which occurred in 1939, Fumagalli had entrusted Camerani with some biographical notes, with the request to publish his obituary. Probably composed during the war years, the obituary remained unpublished and is now preserved in the historical archive of the AIB among the documents of Vittorio Camerani. The edition of the obituary and biographical notes is provided in the appendix.

Abstract: Joachim Johann Mader's De scriptis et bibliothecis antediluvianis appeared in 1666 as the praefatio of the De bibliothecis atque archivis virorum clarissimorum libelli, the first anthology of treatises on the history of libraries. In his essay, the scholar reconstructs the history of the discovery of the alphabet, writing and the first books. Thanks to the De bibliothecis antediluvianis, Mader completed his anthology with a good piece of news about a mythical period which was not previously well known or studied. Moreover, Mader could give a conceptual framework to the collection.

- Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca, 1873-1914: creation and analysis
of a digital corpus of periodicals in their historical context

Abstract: Digital libraries allow not only to improve the preservation of documents and to facilitate access by users, but also to experiment with new methods; for example, it is possible to examine the statistical relationships between the contents of thousands of documents in a short time, an operation almost inaccessible to traditional methods. The key step remains that of converting from analogue support, paper or microfilm, to the digital one, including the transformation of images of the printed text into digital text: only in this way is it possible to statistically analyze those texts, an analysis that cannot be separated from the historical context of their production and from other sources. In this article, we describe in detail the process of creating a digital corpus formed by Italian newspapers published in Gorizia between 1873 and 1914. This includes digitization, editable text extraction, annotation process and statistical analysis of the resulting time series. The data thus obtained are compared with a corpus of Slovenian newspapers printed in the same city and at the same time, already digitized by the Slovene National Library. The analysis of the 47.466 pages of Italian newspapers allows us to demonstrate the type of information that can be extracted from a digital corpus, highlighting the importance of operating within a historical and comparative context. This example of multilingual digital humanism allows us to identify the statistical traces of profound cultural transitions that have taken place in a very complex geographical area and historical period, whose study cannot ignore a particular attention to cultural, technological and social transformations.

- The Arezzo-printed edition of Lodovico Antonio Muratori’s works
(1767-1780)

Abstract: Published in 36 volumes between 1767 and 1780, the edition of Lodovico Antonio Muratori’s works is the main product of Arezzo’s ancient typography. Based on original documents owned by Episcopal Seminary of Arezzo, the essay shows the leading actors and the story of the project. The bishop Jacopo Gaetano Inghirami decides to renovate the Seminary’s plan of study through some updated teaching material. Thanks to a clever editorial policy, the expertise of the printer Michele Bellotti and a well-designed distribution network, the publication becomes a commercial product in great demand: in a few months it gets 288 buyers in Italy and abroad. After bishop Inghirami’s death in 1772, Episcopal Seminary of Arezzo and ‘Collegio Serristori’ of Castiglion Fiorentino
become the new editors. They buy from ‘Società Palatina di Milano’ the original matrices used for the illustrations of the very first editions of Muratori’s masterpieces: Rerum Italicarum Scriptores and Antiquitates Italicae Medii Aevi. In order to sell the unsold, the editors also swap lots of volumes with selected books by many italians booksellers’ sale catalogues. As many of these books are requested for school use, this practice shows the attention of Seminary’s education to scientific arguments and Enlightenment’s issues. Unfortunately, because of increasing economic problems and printer’s death, the editors decide to stop the publication to the detriment of original project.

- Select to preserve: the construction of memory in ecclesiastical archives
between history and practice

Abstract: Even if the memory is selective, reading the past gives new meaning to the present connected with the threads of time, reflected by the lights and shadows of the past and projected into the future. The documentation must be cultivated and preserved beforehand; otherwise there is a weak memory with difficulties and risks, in which the loss of tradition is a near danger. In the context of great cultural changes, the preservation of memory, already complicated on its behalf, may be even more difficult, given the lack of organic works designed to illustrate the set of political, administrative, judicial, ecclesiastical, economic and financial institutions in the specific vision of the relationship between the history and functions of the institutions on the one hand, and the production of writings on the other. Awareness of the preservation of one’s memory was a long process in the history of the Church and perhaps not yet concluded. The article, after a historical excursus of the provisions relating to the construction of ecclesiastical archives and the legislation on the conservation of the acts, focuses attention on selection and waste, trying to highlight the crucial passages and changes that have occurred in the various centuries until today.

- The "libraria" of the Capuchin friars of Sanremo and Francesco

Abstract: The essay starts from the will with which the physician Francesco Corradi, born in Sanremo and died in Genoa in 1865, disposed of his own legacy for various charitable purposes including the creation in his hometown of a public library. Until then, this institute was non-existent in the face of the presence of book collections belonging to religious orders, including Jesuits and Capuchins: the latter’s own books, acquired following the laws of suppression of the ecclesiastical bodies of 1866 and 1867, constituted the first core of the Corradi Library along with the volumes belonging to the doctor himself. The study therefore through the examination of the notes of possession tries to reconstruct the origin and organization of the friars’ collection, then through the analysis of the documentation produced in the meetings of the Municipal Council of Sanremo examines the formative process of the current Civic Library.

- The digitalization of the incunabula of Italy: the Central National
Library of Rome from IGI to the Polonski project

Abstract: Since 1932 the Central National Library of Rome has developed a specific vocation for the census and study of incunabula in a national perspective. In fact, it is the owner of the direction of IGI - General Index of the Incunabula of Italy which, published from 1943 to 1981, constituted one of the most innovative and complete European projects for the re-cataloging of the bibliographic heritage of the century of the origins of the press. The Library was followed by the Italian contact person for the ISTC - Incunaula Short-Title catalog and Incipit projects of the British Library. Recently, in collaboration with the CERL and thanks to the contribution of the Polonski Foundation in New York, it has launched a new project for the digitalization of incunabula starting from the conspicuous collection of the S. Scholastica di Subiaco library, the cradle of the Italian press, through methods and procedures. innovative products that allow a full-scale research on the specimens treated, through a specific portal and participation in other related projects, such as MEI, Text-Inc and 15cIllustration.

- The former San Niccolò psychiatric hospital in Siena: a polymorphic
reality between architecture, archive and library

Abstract: Following the closure of the asylums approved by the Basaglia Law, the care of the sick was entrusted to the extra-hospital services set up in public or private hospitals. The heritage of the asylum institutions, which conists not only of the archive, of real estate, of libraries, of museum collections of medical tools and of asylum furnishings, was entrusted to the competent ASL (Local Health Bodies). The sanitary archive of the San Niccolò psychiatric hospital was kept in the premises of the former Chiarugi department, located within the former mental hospital complex in via Roma. It consists of a total of 1916 pieces, which cover a continuous chronological period from 1819 to 2003. In 2003, however, the ASL of Siena decided to donate the Library of San Niccolò to the Faculty of Medicine of the city to avoid dispersing the huge library heritage. The archive as well as the library of the San Niccolò of Siena psychiatric hospital allow us, through the knowledge of the institution’s history, to recover the real experience of the doctors, nurses and patients who
populated the asylum.

- Archives in the library: parallel worlds that meet'

Abstract: The contribution, starting from the observation that archives and libraries, despite being different and parallel worlds, wants to analyze the difficult relationship between the two realities through a diachronic reconstruction, highlighting the investigations and reflections conducted in Italy over time, and still in progress today , in relation to the complexity and ambiguity of this relationship, due also to the presence of funds and archival documents in libraries, and of documents and literary funds in the archives. The crux of ideal
and practical relationships, therefore existing or desirable, between archives and libraries hinges both on normative and managerial aspects, but certainly also conceptual, and therefore it is as complex as it is urgent to try to dissolve it, proposing the meeting of these two worlds parallel thanks to the help of digital technologies and integrated platforms, in order to make the documentary heritage they contain accessible to an increasingly wider audience.

Abstract: The significant increase in participatory practices in French libraries leads us to question the intentions that govern and precede their implementation. This paper aims to discover these intentions through the study of a participatory cultural program organized by the Bibliothèque municipale of Lyon between November 2016 and March 2017. The programmatic documents consulted, the interviews conducted with the librarians and the observation of participatory activities allow to put in place highlights three reasons that define the roles that the public library wishes to play today in French society: the 'convivialité' library, the 'encapacitation' library and the'engagement' library.

- The use of new technologies: from virtual to pragmatic, the experience of
the Luca Pacioli library

Abstract: New technologies have transformed the organization of Public Administration in Italy. Innovations include online services and improved communication with users. Concurrently the concept of formation has changed. Today continuing professional development is vital to ensure that the sector’s human capital remains abreast of innovative work practices and technologies. Libraries are adapting their services to an ever evolving environment, taking on the challenges of the information revolution. The Luca Pacioli Library derwent radical change, eliminating open shelving in 2006. Its adaptive strategies have succeeded in inspiring reading and knowledge creation, and its continuing growth demonstrates its importance in this context. Despite the space reduction and loss of open shelving, thanks to the automated robotic retrieval system, interactive catalog, e-learning platform and elegant space, readers’ information seeking journeys pass from the tangible to the virtual and vice versa. Users have participated enthusiastically in the initiative which asks them to write a review of the book they have borrowed. Published on the e-learning platform, these reviews demonstrate continual commitment to and appreciation of language use.

Abstract: Libraries always have been evidence of civilization, culture, tradition, and progress. However, from the Enlightenment period and especially after the French Revolution, libraries become a factor of not only individual, but also collective and social education and elevation. In 1837, Louis Aimé Martin – conservator of the library of Saint Geneviève in Paris – published the essay Plan d’une bibliotheque universelle, where the library is described as a national educational enterprise whose aim is to bring together within the same
principles all classes of society. The essay cites the works of the most notable authors of all disciplines, divided by nations for the literary sphere.

- The Abteilung für Sondersammlungen of the Universitäts- und
Landesbibliothek Tirol in Innsbruck: a brief introduction on history,
status quaestionis and ongoing projects

Abstract: This article outlines the history of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol (University and Provincial Library of Tirol at Innsbruck, ULB Tirol) in Innsbruck from the initial idea for its establishment arising in 1731 through its actual foundation in 1745, as well as its connection, shaped by various interactions, with the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck founded in 1669. The text also provides general information on the modern-day ULB Tirol, including data on its general tasks and mission, its holdings and numbers of users, and the individual departments of the library. The main focus of the article lies on the Department of Special Collections and its manuscript holdings, however. It offers an overview of the cataloguing projects conducted over the past fifty years and the status quo of those projects, as well as discussing their boundaries and the possibilities they have opened up. Finally, three specific projects are presented that are either currently being implemented or will be undertaken in the coming years and will substantially expand existing knowledge on the department’s manuscript assets. A bibliography lists all modern manuscript catalogs published between 1987 and 2017 as well as the essential literature on the history of the library’s holdings from 1874 to 2019.

Abstract: The genetic code of the human species requires us to react aggressively to threatening situations. Culture, history – as magistra vitae –, philosophy, law and even religion have failed to quell aggressive instincts except through threats and punishments. Until today, scientific achievements have not changed the biological determinants of our species, so as to eliminate its aggressive and destructive components. The recent electronic communication system, which allows not only the exchange of information but also the immediate transmission of emotional and empathic states, can have unpredictable and incisive effects on the collective transformation of human beings.

- “Andrò a cercare tra gli scaffali”: indagine conoscitiva
sull’interazione lettore-catalogo nella Biblioteca Civica “Vincenzo
Joppi” di Udine

Abstract: AbstractIntroduzione. L’importanza degli studi sul comportamento degli utenti mostra una tendenza costante in aumento. Esso è al centro delle ricerche sia nell’ambito della biblioteconomia che, in particolare, della catalogazione. In quest’ultimo ambito, la pubblicazione del Rapporto FRBR (1998), con le sue quattro funzioni utente ha contribuito notevolmente a focalizzare l’attenzione verso l’utente. L’importanza delle funzioni utente è stata sottolineata e ampliata (con l’aggiunta della funzione navigare) nei principi internazionali di catalogazione (ICP, 2016) dell’IFLA. Gli studi sugli utenti si sviluppano secondo quattro direttrici: studi dell’utenza, comportamento informativo, processi informativi ed esperienze informative (Gonzales-Teruel 2018). La ricerca ha analizzato le interazioni degli utenti con gli OPAC nella Biblioteca Civica Vincenzo Joppi di Udine, allo scopo di stabilirne l’efficienza e l’efficacia, sia dal punto di vista degli utenti che dell’OPAC.Metodo: La ricerca si basa su dati originali raccolti su un campione casuale semplice di 36 lettori, sia mediante l’uso di un questionario somministrato prima e dopo l’interazione che tramite la registrazione dell’intero processo di ricerca con un programma di cattura dello schermo. I dati sono stati raccolti nella Sezione Moderna della Biblioteca civica “Vincenzo Joppi” di Udine tra agosto e ottobre 2017. I dati raccolti, relativi a 81 ricerche e 131 interrogazioni, sono stati analizzati con metodo quantitativo e qualitativo.Risultati e discussione: I dati sul rapporto tra frequenza d’uso del catalogo e livello del lettore, mostrano che maggiore è l’uso, maggiore è il livello di confidenza che il lettore percepisce; al contrario, la confidenza non sembra dipendere dal titolo di studio posseduto.Il 49% degli intervistati si rivolge al catalogo per ottenere informazioni legate a interessi personali; le altre fonti (indicazioni dei professori, consigli di amici, internet ecc.) passano in secondo piano. Il dato utilizzato per quasi la metà delle interazioni è il titolo; la percentuale di approcci per soggetto, cognome dell’autore o nome e cognome dell’autore si aggira invece a poco più del 10% ciascuno. Questi dati sono in linea con quello relativo al tipo di ricerca: nel 60% dei casi, infatti, le interrogazioni sono finalizzate a individuare oggetti già noti e solo nel 40% sono interrogazioni di tipo esplorativo.La modalità di interazione preferita è la ricerca semplice (“Google-like”; 36%) seguita dalla ricerca avanzata (30%) e dalla ricerca di base (12%) e il restante 22% è suddiviso nelle altre modalità di interazione. Tuttavia, la percentuale di successo più alta è garantita dalla ricerca avanzata (67%), seguita dalla ricerca di base (56%) e dalla ricerca semplice (53%) (figura 11).Emerge la differenza registrata – in termini di percezione del successo – tra i dati ottenuti dai moduli e quelli rilevati durante l’interazione con l’OPAC: il lettore percepisce un reale successo o insuccesso soltanto in relazione al risultato finale del processo di ricerca e dà per scontato che per arrivare a un risultato, siano necessari uno o più tentativi (interrogazioni).Si nota una differenza quantitativa importante tra le interrogazioni di tipo noto, con il 60% di esiti positivi e quelle di tipo esplorativo, con soltanto il 43% di successi. I dati confermano che la ricerca esplorativa è quella che necessita maggiormente dell’offerta di un buon servizio di reference ai lettori.Infine, le interrogazioni con insuccesso (47%) (figura 12) mostrano che la causa degli insuccessi è rappresentata nel 56% dei casi dal lettore mentre nel restante 24% dai servizi della biblioteca. Il processo è quindi passibile di notevoli miglioramenti, sia con attività di information literacy, sia migliorando le attività di back-office.
“I’ll give a look on the shelves”: case study on reader-opac interactions at the Biblioteca Civica “Vincenzo Joppi”, Udine, ItalyAbstractIntroduction. Users’ behaviour studies relevance shows a constantly increasing trend. Users’ behaviour is the research focus both in libraries and information sciences and in cataloguing. User studies in LIS were developed along four trends: user studies, information behaviour, information practice and information experience (Gonzales-Teruel 2018). With FRBR Report in 1998 and its four user tasks definition, a major shift toward users’ centrality came in cataloguing too. Relevance of user tasks is also underlined by the Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP). It confirms FRBR four functions and adds a new one: to navigate. The focus of this research is the effective interaction of users with the OPAC at the Biblioteca Civica “Vincenzo Joppi”, Udine, Italy, with the aim of assessing both efficacy and efficiency of interactions, from the point of view both of the user and of the OPAC.Method: This paper draws on an original research, as data about a simple random sample of 36 readers were collected by means both of a survey by a questionnaire before and after the interactions and by OPAC transactions screen recordings. - Adopting Block Chain Technologies in Libraries Services

Abstract: Blockchain technology has proven to be an plausible, perhaps miraculous, underpinning for the sale, transfer and tracking of large integers. Libraries need to become adept in blockchain technology to the extent that they want to license, track and lend large integers. Blockchains have been used in a number of different applications ranging from managing a new cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, to using Smart Contracts for coding ways to track transactional data between persons. This paper discusses, the concept of block chain, history, definitions, and various application of blockchain ranging from health, e-commerce, donors with emphasis on the adoption of its technologies by library professionals and libraries for better service delivery. It therefore concludes by recommending that Nigerian library professionals could setup a blockchain website, blogs and webinars to engage researchers, students, and information professionals to harness their inputs towards developing a whitepaper (policy) and promotion of emerging technologies for better services delivery in the libraries adding value to libraries and the community they serve.

- Il “Fondo storico G. Maconi” della Biblioteca biomedica
dell'Ospedale di Alessandria

Abstract: L’Ospedale “Santi Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo” di Alessandria si costituì nel corso del tempo a partire dalle attività ospitaliere medievali di molte chiese di Alessandria, anche in considerazione del ruolo di piazzaforte militare che la città ebbe fino all’inizio del secolo scorso. Questo percorso interseca quello della crescente importanza che nella medicina (che ha una componente ineliminabile di pratica ed esperienza) veniva riconosciuta allo studio e quindi all’istruzione universitaria e alla produzione libraria. Nel 1902 la Biblioteca dell’Ospedale fu istituita formalmente ed in tale circostanza accolse donazioni libri provenienti dalle biblioteche personali dei medici dell’ospedale. Essi si trovano nel “Fondo storico G. Maconi” della “Biblioteca biomedica” dell’Ospedale e offrono sia importanti spunti di analisi sulla storia editoriale delle opere di medicina (che qui viene delineata per un trattato di chirurgia di Giovanni da Vigo, che ebbe la prima edizione nel 1514 e l’ultima attestata in SBN nel 1685), sia testimonianze di grande rilievo sull’evoluzione del pensiero, della cultura, delle vicende storiche dei tempi in cui i medici dell’Ospedale operavano.

- The digitalization of the incunabula of Italy: the Central National
Library of Rome from IGI to the Polonski project

Abstract: Since 1932 the Central National Library of Rome has developed a specific vocation for the census and study of incunabula in a national perspective. In fact, it is the owner of the direction of IGI - General Index of the Incunabula of Italy which, published from 1943 to 1981, constituted one of the most innovative and complete European projects for the re-cataloging of the bibliographic heritage of the century of the origins of the press. The Library was followed by the Italian contact person for the ISTC - Incunaula Short-Title catalog and Incipit projects of the British Library. Recently, in collaboration with the CERL and thanks to the contribution of the Polonski Foundation in New York, it has launched a new project for the digitalization of incunabula starting from the conspicuous collection of the S. Scholastica di Subiaco library, the cradle of the Italian press, through methods and procedures. innovative products that allow a full-scale research on the specimens treated, through a specific portal and participation in other related projects, such as MEI, Text-Inc and 15cIllustration.

Abstract: Il presente articolo delinea la storia della Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol a Innsbruck (ULB Tirol) dalla sua fondazione nel 1745 fino al periodo delle relazioni con la Leopold-Franzens-Universität di Innsbruck fondata nel 1669.Della attuale ULB Tirol si presentano le principali attività, i compiti specifici, le responsabilità, i fondi conservati, il numero di utenti e la divisione in sezioni speciali, con particolare riguardo a quella di Manoscritti e Rari (Abteilung für Sondersammlungen). Si dà conto dei lavori d’inventariazione e di catalogazione realizzati negli ultimi cinquant'anni, dei risultati conseguiti e delle nuove prospettive di ricerca. Si presentano tre progetti che si svolgeranno nei prossimi anni e saranno dedicati ai manoscritti.In bibliografia sono citati i cataloghi di manoscritti pubblicati negli ultimi trent’anni (1987-2017), e i principali contributi sulla storia dei fondi relativi al periodo 1874-2019.

Abstract: Il contributo esamina lo stato dell'arte della conservazione a lungo termine dei cosiddetti Database Management Systems (DBMS) con uno sguardo rivolto alle esperienze sia nazionali che internazionali. Una prima sezione è dedicata alle strategie di intervento che hanno impegnato i professionisti delle memorie digitali e gli archivisti nelle operazioni di recupero e conservazione di banche dati attraverso modalità di emulazione dei sistemi, migrazione dei formati e normalizzazione dei dati. - Contea Principesca di Gorizia e Gradisca, 1873-1914: creazione e analisi
di un corpus digitale di periodici nel loro contesto storico.

Abstract: Le biblioteche digitali consentono non soltanto di migliorare la conservazione dei documenti e di facilitarne l’accesso da parte degli utenti, ma anche di sperimentare nuovi metodi; ad esempio è possibile esaminare in tempi ridotti le relazioni statistiche tra i contenuti di migliaia di documenti, operazione pressoché inaccessibile ai metodi tradizionali. Il passaggio chiave resta quello della conversione dal supporto analogico, carta o microfilm, a quello digitale, includendo la trasformazione delle immagini del testo stampato in testo digitale: solo così è possibile analizzare statisticamente quei testi, analisi che del resto non può prescindere dal contesto storico della loro produzione e da altre fonti.In questo articolo, descriviamo in dettaglio il processo di creazione di un corpus digitale formato dai giornali italiani pubblicati a Gorizia tra il 1873 e il 1914. Questo include la digitalizzazione, l’estrazione del testo editabile, il processo di annotazione e l’analisi statistica delle risultanti serie temporali. I dati così ottenuti vengono comparati con un corpus di giornali sloveni stampati nella stessa città e nello stesso periodo, già digitalizzati dalla Biblioteca Nazionale Slovena. L’analisi delle 47.466 pagine di giornali italiani ci consente di dimostrare il tipo di informazioni che possono essere estratte da un corpus digitale, evidenziando l’importanza di operare all’interno di un contesto storico e comparativo. Questo esempio di umanistica digitale plurilinguistica ci consente di individuare le tracce statistiche di profonde transizioni culturali che hanno avuto luogo in un’area geografica e un periodo storico molto complessi, il cui studio non può prescindere da una particolare attenzione alle trasformazioni culturali, tecnologiche e sociali.

Abstract: The cataloguing of the incunabula and the sixteenth-century books kept in the library of the Minor Capuchin Friars’ monastery in Bologna was carried out, where all the book funds present in the territory, coming from the convents of the entire minority province, have converged over time. The following information is provided on each sheet: the signature, the author, the title, the typographic notes, the format, the language and the provenance, or all the indications retrievable from the cover, guard page, frontispiece (such as handwritten notes, ex libris, seals, stamps) useful for retracing the conservative events of the text. As far as the library is concerned, an investigation was carried out to reconstruct the passage through time of the texts, the origins, the dispersions, which are also fundamental for understanding the culture of the Capuchin family.

Abstract: Negli ultimi anni l’attenzione del mondo bibliotecario volto ai progressi della tecnologia Linked Open Data e ai progetti Wikimedia si è concentrata su Wikidata, la base di conoscenza secondaria, libera, collaborativa e multilingue formata da dati interpretabili sia dall’uomo che dalle macchine. L’infrastruttura di Wikidata si è rivelata perfettamente compatibile all’attuazione di un'iniziativa che mira a costruire un vasto database di citazioni bibliografiche di qualità in linked open data: WikiCite. Nell'ambito di tale iniziativa, molti sono i progetti nati dalle collaborazioni fra la Wikimedia Foundation e le biblioteche, fra cui la Biblioteca Nazionale di Svezia, la Biblioteca Nazionale del Galles e la Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze.Anche il Centro Bibliotecario di Ateneo dell’Università degli Studi di Salerno ha partecipato attivamente all’iniziativa, inserendo i metadati bibliografici della rivista Bibliothece.it. È il primo esempio italiano e fra i primissimi al mondo di corpus relativo ad un periodico scientifico di ambito bibliografico-biblioteconomico interamente caricato in Wikidata. - Il cortocircuito della biblioteca pubblica

Abstract: Il contributo si interroga sull'aspirazione originaria della biblioteca pubblica ad essere biblioteca per tutti e sulle sue implicazioni in un contesto nel quale l'obiettivo dell'istruzione universale è stato realizzato ormai da tempo e dunque sembrerebbero non sussistere più ostacoli alla realizzazione di questo sogno primigenio. Partendo dalla constatazione che la percentuale della popolazione effettivamente raggiunta - anche nei contesti più avanzati - rappresenta comunque una minoranza, e tenendo conto che in una fase di crisi economica come quella che stiamo vivendo l'intero settore pubblico sta subendo una stretta in termini di finanziamenti e sostegno, le biblioteche pubbliche negli ultimi decenni hanno cominciato a ripensare organizzazione degli spazi e dei servizi per rendersi più attrattive e più in linea con le caratteristiche della società contemporanea. Questi processi hanno sollevato interrogativi su quali siano i confini della mission delle biblioteche pubbliche e cosa tali biblioteche debbano e possano legittimamente fare per ampliare la platea di pubblico. Di fronte all'allargamento di questi confini che è giunto fino a una reinterpretazione della biblioteca pubblica in chiave sociale, ci si chiede se e quanto è opportuno assecondare questo percorso e in che modo sia possibile gestire il possibile cortocircuito che ne deriva.

- Evolving the correction of the literature: manuscript versioning, error
amendment, and retract and replace

Abstract: Academic publishing is undergoing a highly transformative process, and many rules and value systems that were in place for years are being challenged in unprecedented forms leading to the evolution of novel ways of dealing with new pressures. One of the most important aspects of an integrated and valid academic literature is the ability to screen publications for errors during peer review to weed out mistakes, fraud and inconsistencies, such that the final published product represents a product that has value, intellectually, and otherwise. It is difficult to claim the existence of perfect manuscripts. The level of errors that exist in a manuscript will depend on the rigor of the research group and of the peer review process that was used to screen that paper. When errors slip into a final published paper, either through honest error or misconduct, and are not detected during peer review and editorial screening, but are spotted during post-publication peer review, an opportunity is created to set the record straight, and to correct it. To date, the most common forms of correcting the literature have been errata, corrigenda, expressions of concern, and retractions. Despite this range of corrective measures, which represent artificially created corrals around pockets of imperfect literature, certain cases do not quite fit this mold, and new suggested measures for correcting the literature have been proposed, including manuscript versioning, amendments, partial retractions and retract and replace. A discussion of the evolving correction of the literature is provided, as are perspectives of the risks and benefits of such new measures to improve it.

- Tracce di una 'antica ed importante' Biblioteca: la Biblioteca
dei Marchesi Raffaelli di Cingoli

Abstract: Il fondo antico della biblioteca della Facoltà giuridica di Cagliari conserva circa 60 edizioni, tra cinquecentine e secentine, nelle quali è possibile rilevare la nota di possesso «ex libris Bibliothecę Raphaelię», apposta di norma nella pagina successiva al frontespizio. Si tratta della traccia numericamente più cospicua di un ex libris in realtà già sporadicamente affiorato nella catalogazione di alcuni volumi, prevalentemente di interesse giuridico, appartenenti a diverse raccolte private di età contemporanea. La nota è riferibile alla raccolta libraria dei marchesi Raffaelli di Cingoli che nel 1915 venne messa all'asta dalla libreria antiquaria Dario Giuseppe Rossi di Roma, finendo quindi dispersa. Sulla base di una ricerca documentaria il saggio illustra i momenti salienti della storia della biblioteca che, alla fine del '700, spiccava per la sua importanza nel tessuto delle istituzioni culturale marchigiana ed il cui destino si intreccia con le vicende di personaggi di spicco nel panorama del commercio antiquario di primo Novecento. Tra questi Ildebrando Rossi, figlio ed erede dell'attività avviata da Dario Giuseppe, che acquisì la biblioteca dai Raffaelli nel 1913 e ne produsse un parziale catalogo di vendita, Cesare Olschki che stava in quegli anni aprendo a Roma una filiale della libreria fiorentina e che in Ildebrando avrebbe trovato una guida per l'avvio della propria attività, e Attilio Nardecchia da cui, nel 1916, furono acquisiti i volumi ora conservati presso la Facoltà giuridica di Cagliari. Protagonista di questo acquisizione fu Filippo Vassalli, allora docente di Diritto romano presso l'ateneo sardo, nell'ambito di una politica di sviluppo della biblioteca dell'Istituto giuridico, a sua volta animata dalla convinzione della centralità delle biblioteche universitarie nel sistema bibliotecario italiano.

Abstract: L'articolo, prendendo le mosse dalla recente pubblicazione degli Annali oraziani a cura di Antonio Iurilli, individua un gruppo di 39 edizioni non censite da quello studio e presenta una prima analisi su una miscellanea ora alla Houghton Library, contenente 21 edizioni a stampa, tra le quali alcune oraziane, fittamente postillate: si tratta di un volume utilizzato in due istituzioni scolastiche parigine tra il 1565 e il 1567.

- I libri dei Cappuccini a Roma nel XVI secolo

Abstract: Uno dei problemi che affligge la storia delle biblioteche ecclesiastiche e rende a volte arduo lo studio delle fasi che hanno portato alla formazione delle loro raccolte è la mancanza di continuità tra il posseduto antico e il fondo contemporaneo, anche a causa delle varie vicissitudini che hanno inevitabilmente sconvolto la stratigrafia del patrimonio originale. Non fa eccezione la biblioteca dei Cappuccini di Roma, della quale il presente saggio ripercorre la storia tra ‘500 e ‘600 attraverso le fasi che ne hanno caratterizzato l’evoluzione e i vari episodi che ne hanno intaccato la primigenia composizione. Mediante lo studio delle tracce materiali sedimentatesi sugli esemplari di incunaboli e cinquecentine dei frati e l’analisi della presenza di tali segni distintivi sui volumi appartenuti alla “libraria” - in seguito confluiti in altre raccolte - viene presentato un catalogo virtuale dell’antica biblioteca cappuccina, insieme a un panorama delle letture e degli strumenti di studio e di formazione intellettuale dei cappuccini romani.

Abstract: Negli ultimi anni la storiografia italiana ha registrato una discreta attenzione al fenomeno della censura in epoca moderna, in particolar modo concentrandosi sul rapporto esistente tra gli Indici emanati dalla Chiesa e la società italiana. Sono qui analizzate e confrontate diverse monografie che a partire dal 2005 hanno trattato l’argomento rispetto ai secoli XVI-XVII, per delineare la direzione e le tendenze dell’indagine storica odierna. Si offre una rassegna comparata dei lavori di G. Fragnito, U. Rozzo, V. Frajese, F. Barbierato, E. Rebellato, M. Sabato, M. Cavarzere, S. Landi, R. Savelli, M. Infelise.Caduti alcuni schemi che avevano affetto la ricerca durante il ‘900, gli studiosi si sono aperti all’analisi seguendo forme nuove e dando risalto a particolari prima poco analizzati, come il processo di formazione dei diversi Indici, il rapporto con i poteri politici della penisola, le divergenze all’interno delle Congregazioni e l’effettiva incidenza che ebbero le proibizioni su diversi strati sociali del paese. Il centro dell’attenzione è spesso rivolto alla fase di ‘normalizzazione’ della situazione piuttosto che a quella della repressione violenta cinquecentesca; un posto particolare è riservato allo studio dei meccanismi istituzionali e al funzionamento della censura. Molto ribadita è la suddivisione in classi di lettori, con gradi di libertà differenti.Si sono notate due tendenze generali nei testi: una che descrive l’impegno delle strutture censorie come progetto unitario e coerente di controllo della società; l’altra che invece mostra le fratture all’interno della stessa Chiesa negli obiettivi e nei modi della censura. Si auspica una maggiore apertura alla storiografia straniera, il confronto con la quale potrebbe fornire apporti determinanti agli studi italiani; l’apertura potrebbe essere estesa anche ad altri rami della storia, non solo a quella del libro. In appendice si trova l’elenco delle monografie italiane analizzate.

- Valorizzazione dei fondi privati in una biblioteca accademica:

Abstract: La biblioteca accademica E.R. Caianiello, appartenente al Centro Bibliotecario di Ateneo dell’Università degli Studi di Salerno, conserva numerosi fondi privati, nella maggior parte definibili come biblioteche d’autore. La relazione si concentra sulla loro valorizzazione attraverso tre percorsi integrati e sugli approcci utilizzati.Il percorso divulgativo è stato sviluppato attraverso la collaborazione ai progetti Wikimedia, con la creazione di un gruppo di lavoro GLAM che ha arricchito Wikipedia, Wikidata e Commons di contenuti relativi ai fondi speciali, attraverso la rielaborazione di fonti autorevoli e l’utilizzo di immagini e dati dall’archivio aperto dell’Università di Salerno e da altre risorse aperte e riusabili nel web.Per la comunicazione, sono stati utilizzati i profili social della biblioteca, formulando un piano editoriale nel quale l’hashtag #fondispeciali veicola le informazioni relative alle collezioni private, dalla descrizione bibliografica al link della voce Wikipedia del possessore.Per la ricerca biblioteconomica, il 26 maggio 2016 è stata organizzata la giornata di studio “Biblioteca di biblioteche”, patrocinata da AIB Campania e Wikimedia Italia. Fra i temi trattati, la gestione delle donazioni di biblioteche private in contesto accademico e le prospettive di conservazione digitale e di valorizzazione tramite progetti Wikimedia e social media. L’evento ha inaugurato una mostra biobibliografica, per la quale sono state selezionate tre biblioteche d’autore appartenute a personaggi significativi per l’Università di Salerno, e una biblioteca di famiglia, prezioso unicum delle raccolte di Ateneo.I processi di valorizzazione hanno generato una ricaduta positiva in molteplici ambiti: dalla produzione di nuovi contenuti culturali referenziati e open access all’incremento della fruizione del patrimonio bibliotecario comune, dalla creazione di reti collaborative con altri enti culturali alla formazione continua del personale coinvolto nei progetti.

- Translating for the Common Reader An Ongoing Research on Science and
Education in the Italian Book Trade, 1865-1903

Abstract: The article aims at presenting the first results of acurrent research on works, series, periodicals translated and adapted for the Italian recently broadened audience of the late 19thcentury, especially during the age of Positivism. It presents two case studies: 1. translations and adaptation of geographical publications by Emilio Treves; 2. reuse of images in educational publications for object lessons, mainly published by Hoepli, Vallardi. Paravia. The two case studies are meant to give account of publishers' strategies, influenced by the emergence of new readers, and favoured by a still-undefined international copyright legislation. Publishers often translated and adapted texts from abroad in order to save money and satisfy their audience; by doing so, they acted as relevant transcultural mediators in an age of mass education. In the conclusions, the debate on the controversial reception of Positivism in Italy, which determines the time span of the presentation, is mentioned as likely to benefit from the study of the coeval book trade. Namely, it can be argued that the surprising diffusion of scientism at every rank of society during the so-called liberal age relied on the described strategies of transcultural adaptation.

- A TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTANCE MODEL FOR USE OF BIBLIOGRAPHIC MANAGEMENT TOOLS IN
THE ACADEMIA

Abstract: This study examined the adoption of bibliographic management tools (BMTs) in the academia with a view to developing a model for prediction of use of this technology. The technology acceptance model (TAM) was used and structural equation modelling employed to evaluate the relationships amongst the classical TAM variables perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards use and behavioural intention to use BMTs. A structured questionnaire was used to survey 100 respondents by convenience sampling from four tertiary institutions in South-West Nigeria. The questionnaire was made up of three sections A, B and C. Section A collated demographic information of respondents, section B collected data on technology proficiency and BMTs awareness while section C gathered information on the TAM constructs. The most represented age group was 41-50 yr (39%) followed by 31-40 yr (16%). Most respondents were male (60%). Twenty-two percent respondents were doctorate degree holders while majority (62%) held masters degrees. Most respondents (25 %) had spent 1-5 yrs in the academia and 24 % had spent 11-15 yrs in the academia. Most (75 %) respondents reported they were intermediate level users of technology and 73 % also responded they were aware of bibliographic management tools. Perceived ease of use had a direct positive effect (p<0.05) on perceived usefulness (Path coefficient = 0.664), Perceived usefulness had a direct positive effect (p<0.05) on attitude towards use (Path coefficient = 0.770), the effect of Perceived ease of use on attitude towards use (Path coefficient = 0.072) was not significant (P = 0.285); and Attitude towards use had a direct positive effect (p<0.05) on behavioural intention to use, (Path coefficient = 0.699). The study concluded perceived ease of use was important to the perceived usefulness of bibliographic management tools. Perception of usefulness equally was seen a significant predictor of attitude to use and subsequently behaviour of academics towards use of this technology. This study provides a template for assessment of use of bibliographic management tools in academic environments.

- Jeffrey Beall’s “predatory” lists must not be used: they are biased,
flawed, opaque and inaccurate

Abstract: A commentary published in Nature by Jeffrey Beall (Nature 534, 7607, 326; 2016) called for the ban of “predatory” journals from the scientific record. That call for a ban was deeply flawed since the lists on which the term “predatory” were based, were themselves flawed. Many papers published in such journals are valid, having been peer reviewed, and acting in an academically responsible manner, making Beall’s call unfair, and discriminatory. Beall’s blog served as a useful alert system, but in no way were Beall’s black lists, which failed to indicate precise inclusion criteria for each entry, validated by scholars around the globe, much less suitable for use in any policy-making. Even though the Beall blog suddenly went blank on January 15, 2017, with no explanation to the public by Beall, the lists continue to be flaunted as de facto publishing black lists by several academics and websites.

Abstract: Nato nel 2009 per affiancare lo storico Fondo Manoscritti dell’Università di Pavia, PAD – Pavia Archivi Digitali si occupa di acquisire, conservare e rendere accessibili gli archivi nativi digitali di scrittori e giornalisti contemporanei. I fondi fino a oggi acquisiti si sono rivelati molto diversi tra loro, e hanno contribuito via via a precisare e perfezionare le procedure di ingest e la gestione del ciclo di vita dei materiali conservati. Una delle questioni a nostro avviso più importanti riguarda l’analisi preliminare della struttura degli archivi – sia dal punto di vista logico, che informatico – e il colloquio con lo scrittore, a cui viene somministrato un questionario, che si sta rivelando molto utile per comprendere il metodo di lavoro e l’organizzazione dei materiali. Non sono molte le indicazioni che la letteratura offre al riguardo, essendosi quest’ultima prevalentemente occupata di archivi tradizionali o di archivi digitali caratterizzati da una maggiore stabilità di quelli letterari. L’intervento mira a mettere a disposizione della comunità le riflessioni maturate nel corso delle acquisizioni.

Abstract: Fin dal 1932 la Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Roma ha sviluppato una specifica vocazione per il censimento e lo studio degli incunaboli in una prospettiva nazionale. Essa infatti è titolare della direzione di IGI - Indice generale degli incunaboli d'Italia che, pubblicato dal 1943 al 1981, ha costituito uno dei più innovativi e completi progetti europei di repertoriazione del patrimonio bibliografico del secolo delle origini della stampa. A seguire la Biblioteca è stata il referente italiano per i progetti ISTC - Incunaula Short-Title catalogue e Incipit della British Library. Recentemente ha avviato, in collaborazione con il CERL e grazie al contributo della Polonski Foundation di New York, un nuovo progetto di digitalizzazione degli incunaboli a partire dal cospicuo fondo della Biblioteca di S. Scolastica di Subiaco, culla della stampa italiana, attraverso metodi e procedure innovative che permettono una ricerca a tutto tondo sugli esemplari trattati, attraverso uno specifico portale e la partecipazione ad altri progetti correlati, quali MEI, Text-Inc e 15cIllustration.
