  • Independent Magazines Today

    • Authors: Sabina Fazli, Oliver Scheiding, Natasha Anderson
      Pages: 1–11 - 1–11
Abstract: Periodical studies have produced a wealth of research by not only fostering transdisciplinary cooperation but also encouraging the crossing of national and language boundaries. Being grounded in departments of history, literature, culture and area studies ensures the careful and granular reading of issues and the recovery of neglected print archives and personal networks. However, contemporary independent magazines have not yet featured in the scholarly journals of the field. This special issue entiteld "Independent Magazines Today" seeks to highlight the proliferation and vitality of magazines in a niche that is often overlooked, yet deserves closer analysis in order to understand its diversity on and off the page. This introduction first touches on some genealogical aspects of the development of indie aesthetics before discussing independent magazines’ investment in the niche audiences for whom magazines and their aesthetics may serve as a vehicle for diverse contemporary lifestyles. The last section briefly discusses ‘materiality’ and ‘affect’ as two possible key concepts to understanding the workings of indie magazines and their appeal, before introducing the three contributions.

  • Micro-Archives and the Survival of Print in Momma Tried and Sabat

    • Authors: Sabina Fazli
      Pages: 12–3 - 12–3
Abstract: This article focuses on two independently published magazine projects, Sabat (2016–) and Momma Tried (2013–). It introduces Sabat and Momma Tried in the context of the contemporary independent publishing boom and considers their engagement with the print magazine form as affording a micro-archival stance towards the near past and personal histories as well as the magazines’ experiments with their material form.London-based Sabat appropriates the look and formula of women’s fashion and lifestyle magazines but reworks these templates to create a ‘lifestyle magazine for witches’ in a polished minimalist design. In three themed issues, Sabat establishes a meta-narrative of its own death which issue four materially enacts. Momma Tried is rooted in the art scene of New Orleans and started out as a celebration and record of the local community of creatives before the third issue turns the magazine into a ‘cyborg’ combining the print object with an app to create an ‘installation’. Both magazines evoke print as a way of conserving and archiving a specific moment but also engage in experiments that dissolve the magazine form, undermining its archiving function by staging the magazines’ ‘deaths’ as transformations.

  • Indie Magazines as Brands: Aesthetic Communication and Designing the
           Kinfolk Experience

    • Authors: Oliver Scheiding
      Pages: 26–5 - 26–5
Abstract: Over the past years, Kinfolk magazine’s minimalist aesthetics has created a visual voice for a global slow lifestyle audience. Although Kinfolk has become a publishing phenomenon with many imitators, lifestyle magazines are frequently treated as light fare. Pioneering this particular genre of lifestyle magazine, Kinfolk fulfills a deeper purpose of helping readers define themselves. The magazine helps curate and perform lives and strives for authenticity, attraction, and positive valuation to generate short-term affective experiences and long-term cultural value. This article analyzes Kinfolk’s aesthetics as an architecture of relations assembling visual and textual page arrangements that are recurrently meant to be looked at more than read. While current studies associate Kinfolk’s slow lifestyle with Instagram’s blend of people and photography, this article seeks to demonstrate how editors, designers, and art directors have extended the visual personality of the magazine. In doing so, it will explore the magazine’s advanced aesthetic communication, establishing Kinfolk as the template for the millennial set and the culture of neomodernism.

  • Strolling the Streets to Discover the Cities: Cosmopolitan Collage in the
           Independent Magazine Flaneur

    • Authors: Natasha Anderson
      Pages: 31–4 - 31–4
Abstract: The modern indie magazine Flaneur: Fragments of a Street, an English-language periodical published in Germany from 2013 onwards and distributed worldwide, examines a single street of a foreign city in each issue via a creative compilation of various visual and visceral materials in order to construct multimedia fragments into a cosmopolitan collage. Owing to its incorporation of sensate components, its focus on transnational networks, and its evocation of the figure of the nineteenth-century flâneur in order to bring urban environments to life for its widely dispersed readership, Flaneur offers a focal point in the diverse expanse of contemporary independent magazine publications. In order to capture the kaleidoscopic nature of modern life, the publication creates an amalgamation of poetic text, unusual layout, visual input, and haptic interaction within its printed pages. As a result, the interaction between mosaic content and multilayered flexibility within this modern, German magazine functions as the driving force in Flaneur’s goal to both build imagined communities across borders and establish an embodied, emotional reading experience.

    • Authors: Despoina Gkogkou
      Pages: 60–7 - 60–7
Abstract: This article introduces one of the first popular literary miscellanies published in Greece after the First World War, Μπουκέτο [Bouquet] (1924‒46). The first of its kind in the country, it led the way to a new type of periodical with subject matter ranging from serialized novels to short jokes, along with a modern layout featuring fine and plentiful illustrations. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the cultural field, the article starts by showing that the magazine was a manifestation of middlebrow culture, combining commercial values with legitimate cultural aspirations and an eagerness to educate the masses. After situating the magazine in the cultural field of Greek periodical publishing and specifying its audience, the article focuses on its supplements, which followed the magazine’s publishing success. These were spin-off publications associated with the magazine, such as Βιβλιοθήκη του Μπουκέτου [Bouquet’s Library] (1924‒36), a series of translated classic novels, the annual Ημερολόγιον του Μπουκέτου [Bouquet’s Calendar] (1926‒33), and pamphlets or pull-outs sewn into the central pages of the magazine. The analysis draws attention to the characteristics, as well as the threads connecting them to the parent publication. The article traces the reasons that triggered the magazine’s subsidiary products and, by extension, the purposes they fulfilled, as well as the way they were used by the magazine throughout its lifespan in an attempt to create a name for itself and engage its readership.

  • Romance in Woman’s Weekly and Woman’s Weekly as Romance,

    • Authors: Eleanor Reed
      Pages: 80–9 - 80–9
Abstract: This article examines romance and social aspiration in British domestic magazine Woman’s Weekly during the interwar period. Between 1918 and 1939, Cinderella romance was the dominant fictional genre in Woman’s Weekly, which featured at least one complete story and one serial instalment in each weekly issue. These romances work through the social ambitions of the magazine’s target readers: lower-middle-class housewives on low incomes, who aspire towards class promotion. Assuming a social framework within which a woman’s status is determined by the status of her husband, and assuming a reading experience in which the heroine functions as the reader’s avatar, the social aspirations of Woman’s Weekly’s target readers emerge in the socio-economic status of the magazine’s fictional romance heroes. Surveyed using the ‘distant reading’ process pioneered by Franco Moretti, a sample of Woman’s Weekly Cinderella romances issued during 1918–19, 1928, and 1938–39 reveals shifts and complexities in these aspirations across the interwar period. Notably, these shifts and complexities reflect changes within Britain’s class system, and the assumed position of Woman’s Weekly’s target readers within it. Whilst Woman’s Weekly’s Cinderella romance fiction fulfils its target readers’ social aspirations in fantasy, the magazine’s lifestyle content promises to realize them in actuality, by supplying the products and behaviours associated with aspirational lifestyles. Showing how the anticipation and fulfilment of narrative resolution that underpins Cinderella romance narratives might shape one imaginary reader’s experience of reading Woman’s Weekly, I argue that it is the romantic promise of social elevation that attracts readers to the magazine, and ensures their long-term loyalty. The extent to which the magazine can fulfil this promise for real is, however, questionable.
