  • Nuns in Action: A Graphic Investigation into a Graphic Issue

    • Abstract: This article in comics form looks at an under-investigated phenomenon of nun characters appearing in contemporary comics as a unified trope. Appearing with a strong degree of uniformity, these stock characters share a unique costume, weaponry, repeated storylines, and most importantly, are couched in medievalism. To explain the development of these characteristics, which can seem wholly contemporary, the comic looks back at the textual and visual representation of nun and religious female characters —such as saints— from their early medieval origins, through their visual recodification in the Victorian era, up to applications of the nun character in the twentieth century. Examining this issue from different perspectives, this article argues that despite the presence of nuns in the contemporary world, the stock character in comics is dependent on some degree of medievalization, and maps these characteristics as they evolved over time, finding that, thanks to the medievalization itself, nun stock characters present a unique model of superheroine in comics. • Generic Super Heroes: Can They Exist'

    • Abstract: The term ‘superhero’ would seem, at first glance, to be generic. That is to say, ‘superhero’ may be a word or term used to refer to any caped, masked or costumed crusader who fights crime, whether super powered, inhuman, demigod, or genius playboy billionaire philanthropist. However, the legalities of super heroes are far more nuanced than that. This article discusses the use of ‘super heroes’ in light of the fact that the term is covered by a trade mark right jointly held by Marvel and DC. It discusses the protection that Marvel and DC maintain over their mark, the impact of this protection, the challenge to the validity of the registration which was heard in 2016, and the possibility of a declaration of genericide, which would allow the term superhero to be freely used. • Where Comics and Cultural Heritage Meet: A Conversation with Damien Sueur
and Yannis Koikas on BDnF: The Comics Factory

    • Abstract: The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF; French National Library) recently launched a free comics creation desktop and mobile application, “BDnF”. Designed and produced by the BnF, BDnF is a digital creation tool for making comics and other multimedia stories, mixing illustration and text. BDnF allows users to engage creatively in specific aspects of comics (narrative construction, temporality, space, text/drawing/synergy, etc.). A key feature of the application is its integration of a wide variety of educational and iconographic resources, and in particular of the digital collections of the BnF. Initially launched in French, the English language option was launched in May 2020. This article introduces the application to an English-speaking audience through a conversation with Damien Sueur, Digital Production Manager at the Digital Publishing Department, and Yannis Koikas, Head of the Digital Publishing Department at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. • Picture-Perfect or Potentially Perilous' Assessing the Validity of
           ‘Comic Contracts’

    • Abstract: This article considers whether ‘comic contracts’, which incorporate aspects of visualisation, are legally valid under Anglo-Australian contract law. Comic contracting has been put forward as one method which can address issues associated with traditional text-based contracting, including contractor apathy and illiteracy. Use cases across a variety of commercial and other contexts are arising in Australia and around the world. The literature has to date focussed upon the advantages and disadvantages of this novel method, however the broader question of whether comic contracts are legally valid in light of their potential uncertainties has gone unanswered. This article ultimately makes the case for validity and suggests there is ample authority supporting the notion that a comic contract can satisfy the legal test of contractual certainty. • Brotherman, Family, and Legacies: Recognizing the Contributions of African
American Independent Comic Book Writers and Artists

    • Abstract: African Americans produced many comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels during the twentieth century but their works were rarely recognized in reviews of mainstream and independently published comics until recently. These efforts to acknowledge Black comics creatives and their contributions to the industry must continue. This article participates in the ongoing effort to capture and share the experiences of African American creatives in the independent comic book publishing industry by placing a spotlight on the author and co-creator of the Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline (1990–1996) comic book series, Guy A. Sims. The Brotherman brand is part of a long legacy of inspirational media from independent Black producers. Guy’s early experiences provided him with tangible examples of successful Black-owned media companies that were creating content for Black audiences. His most important influence was his father, Dr. Edward Sims, Jr. Edward introduced young Guy to the works of Richard Wright for inspiration. He also engaged his son in questions that further inspired his creativity. Brotherman now serves as a source of inspiration to multiple generations of new comic book artists and writers. • Bleeding Panels, Leaking Forms: Reading the Abject in Emily Carroll’s
           Through the Woods (2014)

    • Abstract: Seeking to move beyond Scott McCloud’s spatio-temporal reading of the bleed (1993: 103), this article explores how Canadian writer/artist Emily Carroll’s graphic narrative Through the Woods (2014) employs the bleed as a means to give form to a mode of horror known as the ‘abject’. Employing theories of embodiment that excavate historical conflations of femininity and nature, in addition to socio-cultural discourses that figure the female body as more uncontrollable than the male, this article explores the anxieties experienced by Carroll’s adolescent protagonists as they traverse the boundary separating girlhood from womanhood. By paying particular attention to Carroll’s excessive use of bleeds, this article argues that the stylistic convention of the bleed is utilised to adumbrate and illustrate the abject horror of such boundary crossings. • “It’s Showtime, Synergy!”: Musical Sequences in Jem
           and the Holograms

    • Abstract: This article discusses how the musical sequences (including concerts, rehearsals, and music videos) in Jem and the Holograms (Thompson and Campbell, 2015) depart from the conventions of the rest of the comic. Artist Sophie Campbell uses paneling techniques including bleeds and aspect-to-aspect closure to give these sequences a disorienting quality of occurring out of the regular time scheme of the comic. She presents the music as a physical element in the scenes: her song clouds float in the foreground of the image, similar to speech balloons but belonging to the realm of art instead of text. These song clouds help guide the reader through the scenes, by both separating the images into their constituent parts, and guiding the reader as to the order those parts should be read in. • Truth, Politics and Disability: Graphic Narratives as Illustrated Hope

    • Abstract: Citizenship in the 21st century may necessitate new and novel means of practice and expression. The graphic novel form can allow for these new means of expression, especially in regards to an important issue in any society: the issue of disability. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how a comic, created by the author, was used to spark conversations and new understandings around the topic of disability and citizenship. • The Elements of a Life: Lauren Redniss’s Graphic Biography of Marie

    • Abstract: This article explores how Lauren Redniss’s Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout (2010) uses expressive drawings, lettering, layouts, tableaus, colour, photographs and archival documents to challenge traditional biographical conventions. Drawing on art history, comics studies, feminist science history, and biography theory, it proposes that Radioactive initially invites readers into the pleasures of intimate knowledge of a complex female figure through alluring hand-drawn visual sequences that recreate both Curie’s era and aura. However, this romanticized and even eroticized view of the subject shifts as the graphic biography of Marie Curie transforms into the graphic biography of her primary discovery, the element radium, and the later twentieth century tragedies of atomic warfare and nuclear fallout. The article concludes that Radioactive is an experiment in graphic biography that highlights how the border between the seen and the unseen cuts across atomic science, biographical narrative, and visual storytelling.
