Jean Giono et le Chant du Tout-Monde : écho-critique de la trilogie
de Pan

  Abstract: Given its comprehensive take on human involvement with nature, Jean Giono’s “Trilogy of Pan”, which comprises Colline, Un de Baumugnes and Regain, and was published around 1930, sounds today like a prophetic warning in the light of current fears about global warming. It thus appears justified to ask oneself what it means to read Giono here and now, from our location in the Southern hemisphere. In doing so, one is bound, not surprisingly, to encounter the inter-relational notion of “Tout-Monde”, created by the Caribbean writer and philosopher, Édouard Glissant. Even the novelist Patrick Chamoiseau, Glissant’s compatriot, seems, more recently, to echo some of Giono’s earlier texts.

Les consignes comme composantes de la fonction pédagogique d’un
tuteur en ligne

  Abstract: Our research finds its roots in the PrépaFLE project, an online tutored French training program which aims to prepare Japanese students before their arrival in France. This program was developed at the Center of Applied Linguistics (CLA) of the University of Franche-Comté in 2011 by a teaching unit in the Master degree of French as a Foreign Language. This teaching unit gave CLA students the opportunity to play the role of tutor in a 60 hour training course designed to prepare students from Tokyo’s Aoyama University for their upcoming year of study in France. Through this program we were able to study the characteristics of the tutorial functions deployed by Master Program students by analyzing their interactions with Japanese students. Our work is aided by research focused on tutoring functions identified by teachers in online course work (Quintin 2008, Nissen 2011). Our analysis has shown that tutors use four tutoring methods (educational, socio-emotional, organizational, and technical) which are characterized by different types of interventions. The interventions studied here will be those of the educational method, the instructions of which we will establish a typology below.

  Abstract: In one of his latest novels to date, Avant que les ombres s’effacent, Louis-Philippe Dalembert, a Haitian born author living in Paris, embraces the migration of Jews fleeing Nazism to the Caribbean. The novel plays on the riff generated by Holocaust survivors and Afro-Caribbeans having faced the same dreadful year. Generally overlooked in the Caribbean, the generational lap between relatives who have become Caribbean is at the core of Avant que les ombres s’effacent. The novel revisits the forgotten episode of the ‘S.S. St. Louis’ who brought 900 Jews to Cuba in 1939, but who were refused to disembark. Haiti, by contrast, warmly welcomed numbers of persecuted. Avant que les ombres s’effacent relates the field of postcolonial studies with Jewish and memory studies.

Crises algériennes et baroquisme dans Le serment des barbares de

  Abstract: This paper theorises Boualem Sansal’s detective novel, Le serment des barbares, passes through the lens of a baroque aesthetic, which highlights the complexities of historical constructs and violent conflicts in particularly insightful ways when applied to the sociocultural context of postcolonial Algeria. In concert with Gregg Lambert’s formulations of The Return of the Baroque in Modern Culture and Paul Silverstein’s analysis of conspiracy theories in postcolonial Algeria, this article demonstrates the ways in which Sansal’s stylistic and thematic choices are emblematic of a baroque practice that overwhelms the reader with a chaotic representation of Algerian society in the turmoil of the political crisis of the 1990’s. Through a close reading of the investigation of Sansal’s protagonist, inspector Larbi, the melancholy and trauma of postcolonial society are carefully elaborated in the context of transnational politics and the control of information that is a hallmark characteristic of repressive regimes. Finally, through an analysis of the pervasive morbidity in Sansal’s novel, the cadavers of victims are understood as allegories of Algerian conflicts, revealing the physical and psychological suffering of a citizenry faced with the ever-present realities of death and societal decay.

Identité exclusive vs langue inclusive : l’émergence d’un genre
neutre en français contemporain

  Abstract: In a perspective of taking into account the new tools of automatic recognition of neologisms, we have already discussed the question of “feminisation of job names, titles and functions”, in May 2017, during a Study Day at the Parthennope University of Naples: “Chef, cheffe, cheffesse: norm, use and new tools for feminisation of job names”. From a strictly linguistic point of view, the project to detect neologisms NEONAUTE (2018-2019) aims to observe the recent use of job names, titles and functions, in their feminised form. But it is only lexicon! Can we go further in the language' In the search for equality, can we go beyond the lexicon (the feminine setting of the names of functions and jobs by a gender morphem) and the “inclusive writing” which touches the nominal syntagma (determiner, name, adjective)' Can we touch the grammar' This question is precisely at the heart of a first French novel: “a novel in which the masculine does not prevail over the feminine”, taken as an example of grammatical neology in literature: Requiem from Alpheratz (2015). Beyond the question of a neutral gender, or not, in French, this emerging trend is also observed in the massive use of truncated and/or resuffixed forms in -o, the suffix -o, neutral, offering the possibility of going further in the search for an inclusive language.

  Abstract: This article analyses Fouad Laroui’s novel Ce vain combat que tu livres au monde as a mode of rewriting of the past and of contesting the notion of a History as conceived in the singular. The novel may also be understood as a proposal for a plural humanity and a shared history. In this regard, this contribution explores the author’s modes of writing, that is to say its narrative and its aesthetic elements, as ways of constructing new and hybrid representations of a collective history.

Formes et enjeux du manifeste littéraire dans l’oeuvre-monde de

  Abstract: After having circumscribed the corpus of manifestos in the work of Xavier Deutsch, we analyse the author's postures or attitude about world fiction and the globalisation of French-language literature. More particularly, we highlight the singularity of this author's perceptive in relation to those of the manifesto “Pour une literature-monde en français”. It thus appears that in both cases, the Francophone world specifically concerns French-speaking areas and authors of French expression; that the World Fiction’s novel is characterised by a creative freedom based on the epic model; that the militancy of the 44 in favour of the “retour du réel” and the death of the Francophonie is absent in Xavier Deutsch, who claims for his part the professionalization of the writer's profession; finally, that the author's position between Brussels and Paris is not only “antinomic”, as for French-speaking writers from the South, but also singular.

l’apprentissage du FLE ' Une analyse des rétroactions correctives
et des stratégies de réparation dans un groupe de discussion

  Abstract: This paper gives an account of an experience in a French as a foreign language class carried out by a teacher who wished to provide more learning opportunities to her students and by the same way extend classroom time and space. A WhatsApp discussion group was created where students can express themselves and receive feedbacks on their outputs. The main objective of the paper is to elicit the added value of that application in a technologically challenged context. For that purpose, the author uses triangulation (Van Der Maren 1996) to analyze data gathered from the corpus of interaction, questionnaire and interviews. It focusses on corrective feedback and repairs strategies. Besides the perceived usefulness of the application by the participants, the results confirm the potential of WhatsApp for language learning as it fosters language-related episodes (Swain & Lapkin 1995) where corrective feedback and repairs occur. To efficiently exploit the potential of this application, it has to be articulated, through a good pedagogic scenario, with the intramural class.

De l’usage du corps féminin au XIXe siècle e

  Abstract: Discussing Europe’s global conquest and expansion in The Origin of Totalitarianism (1975), Hannah Arendt recognizes the confluence of scientific racism and scientific bureaucracy as political devices to be attentive to when looking at how Germany expanded into Europe. Taking my cue from Arendt, and displacing the gaze from Germany to France, I argue that in its own enterprise of expansion outside its national boundaries and even outside of Europe, France was marked by an ethnographic detour that resulted in the creation of hierarchies among human beings at the turn of the 19th century. This paper scrutinizes the sexualization and racialization of the female body, by means of an exploration of the use of women bodies in nineteenth century France, as transpires through Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen and the tribulations of Sarah Baartman, otherwise known as the Hottentot Venus. In showing the ways in which the woman body (both racialized and sexualized) was the focus of an aesthetic and ethics stake, the article attempts to demonstrate that profanation stands out as the political task for those who hope to escape invisibility and engage with the difficult task of becoming-subject.

L’expansion de l’anglais : une menace pour la francophonie

  Abstract: There is a belief that Francophone institutions and organisations are powerless to counter the attraction of academics towards the English language. According to many Francophone decision-makers, the expansion of the English language and its current supremacy in academia are largely driven by globalisation. This article questions this belief. In fact, drawing from two multilingual contexts, I will show that the demand for English stems from internal sociolinguistic dynamics. To support my stance, I will analyse some of the sociolinguistic dynamics in South Africa and Mauritius. More importantly, I will show that scholars should not conflate and confuse the expansion of the English language in science with the challenges of French-speaking academics. If, for example, Francophone institutions and organisations want to address the specific problem of the attraction of French-speaking academics for English academic journals, a safer approach would be to analyse how the English-speaking academic world is structured, what it offers and that Francophone academia does not offer. Pending such a comparative study, this article proposes that a number of initiatives be implemented in order to prevent the situation from becoming more difficult to manage in the future.

  Abstract: The reception of Albert Camus in China has a history of more than seventy years. During this reception process, Camus’ image among Chinese readers has been constantly changing. The change of Camus’ image in China is not an isolated event, but an event which reflects the assessment of Chinese society and culture. This paper is intended to present the process of the change of interpretation of Camus’ image in China by first tracing the history of Albert Camus’ reception in China, then focusing on the interpretations of Chinese researchers on Camus’ image.

La littérature mauricienne contemporaine. Un espace de création
postcolonial entre revendications identitaires et ouvertures
interculturelles.

  Abstract: Voici un ouvrage de poids. Visant à donner de la littérature mauricienne contemporaine un tableau complet, exhaustif même, portant sur une production étalée sur près de vingt ans, qui de 1990 à 2009 coïncide avec son « renouveau », il tranche d’emblée sur les habituels ouvrages d’introduction aux petites littératures. Mais pour produire des remous, accordons-le, il ne faut pas moins qu’un « pavé » lorsque la proverbiale « mare » désigne un océan entier : quel dommage de n’y pouvoir consacrer que ces quelques lignes. Pour y entrer, l’auteur nous propose une lucarne, sans doute issue de ses archives personnelles : dénuée de couleurs, elle ne donne ni sur les plages en-palmées, ni sur le sourire d’une enfant nous invitant au voyage.

Hommage à Julien Kilanga Musinde. La traversée des mondes.

  Abstract: L’oeuvre littéraire et l’activité académique de Julien Kilanga Musinde ne sauraient passer inaperçues ; c’est là le point de vue de l’Université d’Angers qui, pour le matérialiser, avait jugé utile d’organiser en son honneur une journée scientifique sous le thème « Littératures francophones entre tradition et modernité ». Cette journée qui a eu lieu le 16 novembre 2018 en terre angevine avait réuni des chercheurs de différents pays pour réfléchir principalement sur l’écriture littéraire de cet auteur. Le présent ouvrage, publié début 2020, constitue un assemblage « de discours, études et témoignages inspirés par l’oeuvre et la trajectoire exceptionnelle de Julien Kilanga Musinde » (5) présentés comme communications par des chercheurs à cette occasion ; c’est un hommage que l’Université d’Angers, à travers son Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherches sur Patrimoines, Arts, Langues et Lettres (CIRPaLL), a rendu à l’auteur, qui a oeuvré à la fois comme chercheur et comme enseignant au sein de cette institution.

  Abstract: Cet ouvrage fait suite à Le murmure des îles indociles, publié chez le même éditeur en 2017. Jean-Louis Cornille a eu le temps d’approfondir ses connaissances de la littérature malgache – il y a deux ans, « l’oeuvre de Rabemananjara [lui] était inconnue, comme [lui] était peu familière celle de Rabearivelo » (38). Il n’avait aussi lu qu’un seul roman de Raharimanana, Za. Ces lacunes ont été comblées et le volume entre nos mains fait preuve d’une excellente perception de quatre auteurs malgaches aux initiales JR, tous des hommes, qui cadencent la littérature de l’Île Rouge entre 1920 et 2020 ; Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo pour la première génération, Jacques Rabemananjara qui forme la transition à l’époque de la Négritude et des Indépendances, et les deux enfants de la postcolonie, Jean-Luc Raharimanana et Johary Ravaloson. Ce qui marque cette généalogie, comme toute ascendance littéraire selon Cornille, est une hantologie : les textes dévoilent les spectres – les lémures du titre – que sont les écrivains « français » – c’est-à-dire publiant ou ayant été traduits dans cette langue – des générations précédentes.

  Abstract: Fruit d’un effort étalé sur plusieurs années, entrepris par une équipe multiculturelle d’une dizaine de traducteurs réunie grâce au soutien de l’AUF, cette anthologie prolonge de manière très innovante le travail autrefois entrepris par Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo lui-même, dont on sait qu’il ne cessa d’osciller entre deux langues. Poète d’abord obnubilé par les formes classiques importées de France, Rabearivelo n’en resta pas moins attaché à la tradition malgache et à l’histoire de son peuple. Autodidacte, il chanta dès 1921 son pays natal selon les règles strictes de la prosodie française : ce que Serge Meitinger nomme « un apprentissage de l’étranger », qui rappelle les valeurs natales chéries sous forme de perte. À partir de 1931, Rabearivelo se réapproprie le « natal » en le chantant en vers libres, sous prétexte d’une traduction du « hova » en réalité feinte puisque le plus souvent il les écrivit directement en français avant de les traduire en sens inverse ; il s’agit des recueils bilingues, Presque-Songes (1934) et Traduit de la nuit (1935), qui lui permettent d’atteindre une certaine universalité, cependant vécue comme un déracinement : il ne fut reconnu ni comme poète malgache ni comme poète français, toujours dans l’« entre-deux », selon une interférence alors perçue comme négative. Le suicide de Rabearivelo en 1937 mit fin à une dernière mutation, à peine esquissée, de son écriture.

L’oeil du Coeur, Kilanga Musinde, Julien & Toka Karachaliou,

  Abstract: Après la parution en 2010 du recueil des poèmes Au creux de mon être, les Éditions du Cygne de Paris publient, dix ans plus tard, un autre recueil de poèmes, L’oeil du coeur, écrit par les mêmes auteurs, Julien Kilanga Musinde et Mélita Toka Karachaliou, et selon la même formule. Faudrait-il signaler que le premier est un Africain de la République démocratique du Congo, alors que la dernière est une Européenne de nationalité grecque ' Cette nuance s’impose car ce recueil de poèmes, comme son précédent, est bilingue, il est écrit à la fois en français et en grec. Les vingt poèmes de Kilanga Musinde, qui constituent la première partie de ce recueil, sont écrits en français aux pages de gauche, accompagnés d’une traduction en grec aux pages de droite ; à l’opposé, dans la seconde moitié, les vingt poèmes de Toka Karachaliou sont écrits en grec aux pages de gauche, avec une traduction en français aux pages de droite. Au-delà de ce chiasme, on peut déchiffrer un souci d’équilibre par lequel l’unicité de « l’oeil » (qui paraît dans le titre) est visible dans le contexte d’un seul « coeur », un coeur universel. « L’oeil du coeur » c’est aussi le titre du sixième poème de ce recueil (16).

Winnie Mandela : le mythe et la réalité. Alger : Casbah

  Abstract: Ce petit volume, « en hommage à Winnie Madikizela-Mandela » (9), est l’occasion pour Benaouda Lebdai, comme il le souligne sur la quatrième de couverture, de « rendre justice » à l’activiste anti-apartheid et de lui attribuer « sa » réalité. L’ambition est dès lors de rédiger une « autre » biographie, une biographie nouvelle. Or, les récits de vie de cette femme qui a marqué l’histoire de l’Afrique du Sud pendant plus d’un demi-siècle, sont au final peu nombreux.

  Abstract: La présente publication est en libre accès à l’adresse mentionnée ci-dessus. Il existe une version française et une traduction en anglais. Les deux versions sont identiques. Pour ce compte rendu je me suis basée sur la version française. Christian Ollivier et l’équipe du Projet e-lang du Conseil de l’Europe, plus particulièrement du Centre européen des langues vivantes (CELV ; en anglais European Centre for Modern Languages), ont fait un grand service aux enseignants des langues vivantes en rassemblant plusieurs perspectives socio-interactionnelles dans cet ouvrage.

  Abstract: On ne présente plus la mythique collection « Que sais-je ' » fondée en 1941 par Paul Angoulvent et publié jusqu’en 2017 par les Presses Universitaires de France avant d’être reprises depuis par le groupe Humensis. Il aura fallu 2019 pour que Simone de Beauvoir entre enfin dans cette collection à la fois érudite et généraliste. On ne s’étonnera pas de cet oubli tant la philosophe et écrivaine demeure encore une intellectuelle clivante dansl’Hexagone – La Pléiade ne l’a accueillie partiellement qu’en 2018.
