  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Technological Innovation and Firm Wages:
           Firm-level Evidence from OECD Economies

    • Authors: Liu Shi, Shaomeng Li, Xiaolan Fu
Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of technological innovation associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) on firm wage levels using longitudinal firm-patent data for 27 OECD countries. The study finds that 4IR technological innovations raise firm wage levels, and this wage-boosting effect is stronger than that generated by non-4IR innovations. We also find evidence that the wage-boosting effect only appears amongst firms in high technology sectors and firms innovating in core technologies.

    • Authors: Francine Charest, Laurence Saglietto

  • How Can Industry 4.0 Contribute to Combatting Climate Change'

    • Authors: Adel Ben Youssef
Abstract: Climate change adaptation and mitigation, and industry 4.0 are two important challenges that countries worldwide are facing. The integration of climate change and industry 4.0 could bring several benefits related to promoting sustainability and global economic decarbonization, and achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement. We conduct a qualitative analysis to describe the main principles and basic technologies of industry 4.0, link industry 4.0 to climate change and identify the conditions which would make industry 4.0 climate compatible. Industry 4.0 needs to fulfil four conditions in order to be climate compatible. It must promote energy efficiency and achieve substantial energy gains, enable the circular economy and allow greater productivity and improved use of resources within closed loop supply chains which include re-use and recovery, achieve sustainable development through eco-innovation, and allow significant technology transfer to the least developed countries (LDCs)...

  • Not for everyone' Product characteristics and digital production
           technologies in manufacturing

    • Authors: Bernhard Dachs, Iztok Palčič
Abstract: Terms such as the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’, ‘Industry 4.0’, or the ‘next production revolution’ suggest a broad range of possible applications for digital production technologies including robots, advanced logistics systems or additive manufacturing. We argue that digital production technologies are less generic than current economic policy discussions often suggest. Their usage depends on the characteristics of firms’ products, and their application is currently still confined to specific areas.
The empirical analysis uses firm-level data from a sample of more than 2,000 manufacturing firms. The results confirm that the diffusion of robots, enterprise resource planning, additive manufacturing or advanced logistics is still highly specific to the characteristics of the production process. There are significant differences in the use of digital production technologies by firms according to the degree of product complexity, scale and the degree to which the production activities ...

  • Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

    • Authors: Salima Benhamou
Abstract: This article analyses how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform work, considering both the potential of this technology and its limits. The sectoral approach adopted, focusing on the health, transport and banking sectors, allows for a detailed analysis of both the opportunities and risks as well as the evolution of tasks, learning dynamics, and changes in working conditions and management practices. The analysis shows that the tasks making up jobs in these sectors cannot always be automated with AI and that in many cases AI-based devices are used in a way that is complimentary to the skills of human workers. For this reason, and irrespective of the impact of AI on the overall level of employment, the analysis shows that the deployment of AI depends on continuous learning and skills development. The article concludes by arguing that learning forms of work organization are best suited for fostering complementarity between the machine and the human.

  • Exploring the economic and social impacts of Industry 4.0

    • Authors: Cécile Cézanne, Edward Lorenz, Laurence Saglietto
Abstract: After the mass production and automation that characterised the 20th century, recent technological breakthroughs including advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, augmented and virtual reality, the Internet of Things (IoT) and 3D printing are seen as set to change the way we work and live (OECD, 2018, Pereira & Romero, 2017; Frank et al., 2019). The changes are summed up under the notion of Industry 4.0 in reference to the program put in place by the Federal government in Germany in 2011 to drive the digital transformation of its industry. The German initiative inspired similar programs in other European nations and was progressively adopted by countries around the world, thus initiating what is called the 4th industrial revolution. (Kagermann et al., 2011, 2013; Ardito et al., 2019). Industry 4.0 is characterised by the integration of different digital-based technologies in the production process in order to increase enterprise efficiency and competitiveness...

    • Authors: Emmanuelle Dutertre, Bernard Jullien

  • Human capital and the pluralistic governance of the modern firm: The
emergence of flattened hierarchies at work

    • Authors: Virgile Chassagnon, Xavier Hollandts
Abstract: Recent organizational economics literature has shown that agency theory is wrong from a legal standpoint and suggests building a renewed approach to corporate governance in cognitive capitalism. This article invites a rethinking of internal governance within modern firms based on a strong specific human capital. We propose a theoretical framework based on several building blocks from a team production approach in order to exhibit an internal governance structure in firms based on human capital. The article complements the team production model of corporate governance by addressing theoretical and practical issues associated with the development of a legally supported modern internal governance structure, and it is in line with the functioning of firms, which is increasingly based on the pursuit of more democratic and pluralistic governance.
