- Il fotografo al lavoro: gli album di Cesare Giulio (1890-1946)
Authors: Valentina Varoli Abstract: Close analysis of the 147 photographic albums of Italian photographer Cesare Giulio (1890-1946) allows us to understand the author’s way of working and his evolving ideas about the medium. Three different types of objects are preserved in the photographer’s archive: proof sheet, dating mainly from the 1910s; albums meant as visual memories of his excursions in the Alps during the first half of the 1920s; and a set of “accurate tests” related to the artist’s evolution toward a more modernist approach in the second half of that decade. As a whole, these albums shed new light on the work of a less-known Italian photographer who nevertheless had a deep influence on Italian modern photography in the interwar period. Issue No: Vol. 4
- Vite di carta. Il progetto mancato dell’Album d’Oro dei caduti
cesenati della grande guerra Authors: Beatrice Lontani Abstract: This article offers new insight into the stories behind the creation of the “Fondo Caduti” in Cesena, a collection of letters, postcards, and photographic portraits gathered by Dino Bazzocchi, the director of Biblioteca Malatestiana, in view of a memorial publication entitled Album d’Oro, devoted to the city’s soldiers fallen in the First World War. Through the analysis of the photographs’ materiality and the reconstruction of their “cultural biography,” this study investigates the social meanings implicit in photographic objects that are carriers of private grief as well as public memory. Issue No: Vol. 4
- Il poeta esposto. Un ‘album di famiglia’ dei poeti italiani
d’oggi Authors: Riccardo Donati Abstract: Bringing together a conspicuous group of photographic portraits of 20th-century poets, Niva Lorenzini’s volume Le parole esposte. Fotostoria della poesia italiana del Novecento (2002) can be seen as a particular type of album, presenting hundreds of photographic reproductions laid out on the page to create a narrative about the large ‘family’ of Italian poetry. Such narration develops in an intergenerational perspective by way of inclusion, exclusion, and dialogues among individuals belonging to the same small community. Most important, this ideal album raises crucial questions about the representation and self-representation of the poet as a member of a closely knit community, (presumably) characterized by a strong quest for identity. - Alberto Sartoris e la fotografia: Gli elementi dell’architettura
funzionale e le mostre di architettura Authors: Cinzia Gavello Abstract: Italian-Swiss architect and art promoter Alberto Sartoris (1901-1998) was the first to bring to the Italian publishing scene an unusual model of architectural treatise, which had its characteristic traits in a polemical use of the text and in the spectacular nature of the images chosen. Published in 1932, Sartoris’ Gli elementi dell’architettura funzionale highlights an important history and theory of architecture photography. The aim of this paper is to analyze the extensive and constant presence of Sartoris in international exhibitions, debates and conferences developed in Europe since the 1920s in relation with his most important editorial operation. Issue No: Vol. 4
- Pour une définition de la photographie expérimentale: jouer
contre les appareils Authors: Marc Lenot Abstract: What is experimental photography' Experimental photographers do not abide by the standard rules of photography, they play against the photographic apparatus. Some photograph without a lens (pinhole) or without a camera (photograms). Others play with light, time, chemical development, or printing. And some erase the author-photographer, or use him differently in the process. Contemporary experimental photography is not a school, nor a movement, but simply a current, a moment between the decline of traditional documentary photography and the rise of digital photography. Issue No: Vol. 4
- L’archivio Graziano Arici: un progetto per Venezia'
Authors: Sara Filippin Abstract: The Graziano Arici Archive, donated to the Fondazione Querini Stampalia of Venice, is a case study that epitomizes many of the theories proposed on the concept of photographic archives. This paper describes its composition and two of the forms through which the photographer has spread its knowledge: the digital archive created for professional purposes and a Facebook page. It then takes into consideration the issues related to its new status of cultural heritage and argues that it can play an important role as a source of ‘critical’ memory and help to implement studies in the history of photography. Issue No: Vol. 4
- La didattica della fotografia nell’Università italiana. Confini e
sconfinamenti disciplinari Authors: Cristiana Sorrentino Abstract: This article discusses the results of a survey on photography-related courses offered by Italian universities during the academic year 2017-2018. Comparison of new data to previous surveys highlights a complex situation – in terms of degrees, classes, and teaching staff – characterized by a persistently high level of heterogeneity and fragmentation.
