  • APPROACHES AND SCALE ANALYSES IN SOUTH AMERICAN ZOOARCHEOLOGY AND
           TAPHONOMY
: REFLECTIONS REGARDING ITS CURRENT STATE AND PERSPECTIVES
           FOR ITS DEVELOPMENT

Theoretical and methodological aspects of zooarchaeology and taphonomy are discussed in relation to the development of these disciplines in South America. In particular, issues regarding scales of analysis, theoretical-methodological approaches to the role of taphonomic processes and human behavior, and the Interaction between taphonomy and zooarchaeology. Current issues in these disciplines and the particularities of Neotropical faunas are considered.

  • SUB-AQUATIC ARCHEOLOGY AND TAPHONOMY: RECENT ADVANCES IN THE
STUDY OF SUBMERGED PHINIPLEISTOCENICS IN THE PACIFIC COAST OF CENTRAL
           CHILE

This paper presents the results of a taphonomic analysis of the site GNLQ1 (32 ° S - 71° W Chile) discovered at 13 m of depth below sea level. The site can be characterized as a primary context, conformed by diverse remains of extinct continental fauna (families Camelidae, Cervidae, Cricetidae, Artiodactyla, Equidae, Mylodontidae, Canidae and the Xenarthra Order) recovered in concentrations arranged on a stratigraphic unit also assigned to the Late Pleistocene. We deal with taxonomic determination, skeletal units' representations, and surface modifications of the material. We aim to understand paleo-ecological conditions and identify taphonomic factors in terrestrial and sub aquatic contexts. • BIRD BONES TAPHONOMY: STATE OF THE PROBLEM AND PERSPECTIVES FROM
           THE SOUTHERN NEOTROPICS

Current studies on bird bones conducted at the Neotropics show that differences in the impact of taphonomic processes are mainly due to body size and anatomy, as well as to the role of environmental and ecological contexts. Future research must include comparative studies and controlled observations to generate specific models that will help to understand taphonomic histories of zooarchaeological remains in the region.

AMONG GATHERER-HUNTER GROUPS IN LOWER PARANA (ARGENTINA)

The first reliable record of the dog (Canis familiaris) recovered in a hunter gatherer site from the lower Paraná wetlands (Argentina) is analyzed in this paper. We discuss several aspects related to the origin, chronology and types of interactions established between dogs and aboriginal groups in the context of scarce information currently available about their presence among hunter gatherer groups of Southern South America.

  • ARCHEOFAUNA OF XCAMBO, YUCATAN, MEXICO

This article discusses the faunal use pattern of the pre-Hispanic Mayas of the Yucatan coast (Mexico), based on a zooarchaeological sample from the site of Xcambo. The discussion addresses the use of a wide and diverse spectrum of fauna, emphasizing the discovery of remains of the tropical seal (Monachhus tropicalss) a species currently extinct. Tropical seal specimens are extremely rare in Mesoamerica, but they show that these animals were occasionally used by pre-Columbian inhabitants.

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSIGHTS INTO THE DISARTICULATION PATTERN OF A HUMAN
SKELETON IN A SITTING/ SQUATTING POSITION

Archaeological excavation of human remains can provide information on decomposition. From these data it is possible to establish the original lay out of the remains, to distinguish between taphonomic processes and intentional human intervention, and to reveal the presence of decomposed organic materials. From observations made in an archaeological context, the author describes the decomposition of a funerary bundle in a sitting/squatting position and explains how bones can be naturally displaced during the process. DESCRIPTION

This paper analyzes and describes bioanthropological studies on South American Amerindians. Three periods in the development of biological anthropology, from the 19th century up to the present, were evaluated with the intention to analyze the technical, methodological and theoretical contributions predominant in each of them. To achieve this objective, contributions on population genetics were considered, opening new ways to approach and understand, from a different perspective, the biological variability of these human groups. • BELIEVING IN ADAPTATION: THREE CLASSICAL PROPOSALS FOR
           ARCHEOLOGY AND ONE EVALUATION

Thirty years after Kirch (1980) seminal paper, this work reviews the role of adaptation in contemporary archaeological thought and discusses its use. In this process, the use of this concept in biology will be examined as well as its use in archaeology, as it is incorporated in processualism, selectionism and Dual Inheritance theories. The author concludes with an evaluation of its current potential.
