• An Event Semantics with Continuations for Incremental Interpretation
• Authors: Bott O; Sternefeld W.
First page: 201
Abstract:
Abstract
This article presents a method to construct event semantic representations incrementally from left to right. The proposed theory focusses on the interaction between events and other scope taking expressions, in particular quantificational DPs and adverbials that are sensitive to aspect. Psycholinguistic experiments have revealed that semantic mismatches can be detected as early as their lexical triggers are encountered, without waiting for a complete semantic or syntactic representation. Our theory thus provides for ‘incomplete’ representations that nonetheless allow for an immediate explanation of such mismatches, right at the point where left to right parsing detects the offending triggers. Viewed from a broader perspective, our framework can be seen as a logical background for theories of semantic parsing in general. In contrast to existing implementations of incremental interpretation, we only employ a single compositional processing rule, namely functional composition of only one logical type of expressions. On the other hand, for this (otherwise unmatched) uniformity to work, we rely on advanced semantic techniques like continuations, dynamic binding and unrestricted β-reduction (cf. Barker 2002; Gronendijk & Stokhof 1991; Klein & Sternefeld 2013, respectively). In the context of adverbials, these methods can be shown to interact in a non-trivial way with the mereology of events as proposed in Krifka (1992).

• Division of Labor in the Interpretation of Declaratives and Interrogatives
• Authors: Farkas DF; Roelofsen F.
First page: 237
Abstract:
Abstract
This article presents an account of the semantic content and conventional discourse effects of a range of sentence types in English, namely falling declaratives, polar interrogatives and certain kinds of rising declaratives and tag interrogatives. The account aims to divide the labor between compositional semantics and conventions of use in a principled way. We argue that falling declaratives and polar interrogatives are unmarked sentence types. On our account, differences in their conventional discourse effects follow from independently motivated semantic differences combined with a single convention of use, which applies uniformly to both sentence types. As a result, the Fregean ‘illocutionary force operators’ Assertion and Question become unnecessary. In contrast, we argue that rising declaratives and tag interrogatives are marked sentence types. On our account, their conventional discourse effects consist of the effects that are dictated by the basic convention of use that is common to all sentence types considered here, augmented with special effects that are systematically connected to their formal properties. Thus, a central feature of our approach is that it maintains a parallelism between unmarked and marked sentence types on the one hand, and basic and complex discourse effects on the other.

• Retracted: The Witness Set Constraint
• Authors: Fortuny J.
Abstract:
Abstract
This article is initially concerned with a famous constraint on the class of possible determiners in natural languages: the so-called Conservativity Constraint. We shall briefly illustrate the force of this constraint and informally sketch Keenan & Stavi (1986)'s view according to which the Conservativity Constraint derives from the boolean structure of natural language semantics. We shall proceed to discuss certain well-known linguistic categories that have been argued to be interpreted by non-conservative functions: only and the relative proportional determiners many and few. We shall take the challenge posed by the existence of these categories in order to propose an alternative to the Conservativity Constraint. This alternative will be dubbed the Witness Set Constraint, which is inspired in Barwise & Cooper (1981)'s considerations on the semantic processing of generalized quantifiers. We shall defend that the proposed constraint does not suffer from the empirical shortcomings that have been attributed to the Conservativity Constraint, and indeed, we shall argue in detail that it correctly predicts (i) the existence of conservative determiners, (ii) the non-existence of certain non-conservative determiners, such as inner negations, cardinal comparison determiners and the converses of non-trivial proportional determiners, and most importantly, (iii) the existence of the non-conservative functions denoted by only and the relative proportional determiners many and few. This line of reasoning suggests that the class of functions from properties to sets of properties denoted in natural languages typically by determiners is constrained by a principle that simplifies the semantic processing of generalized quantifiers.

• Judge-Dependence in Degree Constructions
• Authors: Bylinina L.
First page: 291
Abstract:
Abstract
The article discusses judge-dependence of gradable adjectives and degree constructions. Take the positive construction: whether sentences ‘John is tall’, ‘This cake is tasty’, or ‘Mary is smart’ are true or false depends not only on a state of affairs but also on whose opinion is being expressed. At the same time, the adjectives appearing in these subjective statements differ in ways that are often considered crucial for shaping an analysis of judge-dependence. Consider embedding under ‘find’ and the ability to take overt ‘judge’-phrases: (1) I find {this cake tastier than that one / John smarter than Mary / *Mary taller than John}. (2) {Apples are tasty / ??John is tall / ??Mary is smart} (?)for / to me. To explain these patterns, I look at different classes of subjective lexical items, limiting myself to the domain of degree constructions. I take predicates of personal taste (PPTs) like ‘tasty’ or ‘fun’ as a starting point, as they have received the most attention in the literature and are usually taken to be representative of the whole class of subjective predicates. A closer cross-linguistic look at more items like positive dimensional adjectives (‘tall’), evaluative adjectives (‘smart’), extreme adjectives (‘gigantic’) and modal degree morphemes like ‘too’ shows that, for most cases, there is no evidence for a judge argument, quite often associated with subjectivity across the board. At the same time, I argue that postulating a judge argument for ‘tasty’ or ‘fun’ and capturing judge-dependence of the other classes with a judge index of evaluation—‘two types of subjectivity’ view—is not a good solution as well. Taking an intuition that the extra argument of PPTs is an Experiencer rather than the judge seriously, I observe that, indeed, the presence of an extra argument correlates with reference to an experience event being part of the predicate semantics. On top of that, I show that the PPT Experiencer argument does not show any special judge-dependent behaviour that is not observed for other Experiencers in different constructions. In a nutshell, I adopt a judge index of evaluation account of subjectivity (Lasersohn 2005, 2009), but the role that I assume for the overt ‘judge’-phrases is different from what Lasersohn suggests. For me, these ‘judge’ PPs are not index shifters, but are Experiencer arguments of PPT predicates. Finally, I motivate and formulate a general principle regulating who can make a direct assertion about someone's internal state (‘Judge=Experiencer’ principle).

• Composing Criteria of Individuation in Copredication
• Authors: Gotham M.
First page: 333
Abstract:
Abstract
Copredication is the phenomenon whereby two or more predicates are applied to a single argument, but those predicates appear to require that their argument denote different things. This article focuses on the problem of individuation and counting in copredication: many quantified copredication sentences have truth conditions that cannot be accounted for given standard assumptions, because the predicates used impose distinct criteria of individuation on the objects to which they apply. I propose a compositional system for criteria of individuation and show that it improves predictions regarding the truth conditions of numerically quantified copredication sentences compared to existing accounts.
