  • Exclusive Particles in Ga (Kwa)
    • Authors: Renans A.
      Pages: 555 - 585
Abstract: Exclusive particles, which have been attested in a wide range of languages, give rise to a rank-order interpretation and/or to an exhaustive interpretation. Based on novel data from Ga, the paper identifies an exclusive particle that not only gives rise to the exhaustive meaning but also operates on an NP denotation allowing, for example, plural count nouns to be combined with an indefinite determiner which encodes the cardinality ‘one’. In particular, the paper shows that the Ga exclusive particle too functions as Landman's (1989, 2010, 2013) group-forming operator. The Ga data thus extend the typology of exclusive particles and point to a previously unattested variation in the semantics of exclusives in a cross-linguistic perspective.

  • The Logic of Intention Reports
    • Authors: Grano T.
      Pages: 587 - 632
Abstract: Unlike belief and desire reports, intention reports (e.g. John intends to leave soon) are not well studied in formal semantics. This article aims to begin to fill this gap, focusing on empirical similarities and differences that intention reports bear in relation to other attitude reports and to other expressions that involve intentional action. These empirical properties are shown to follow from the view that an intention report aintendsp denotes true iff a has a maximally ranked action-relevant or effective preference (in the sense of Condoravdi and Lauer 2016) that a bears the responsibility relation (in the sense of Farkas 1988) to p. Also discussed are intention reports that do not involve syntactic control (e.g. John intends for Bill to leave soon), which in some previous literature have been argued to involve coercion. The proposed semantics for intend enables a coercion-free analysis of such sentences, and issues surrounding the choice between a coercion-free and a coercion-based approach are discussed.

  • On The Indexicality of Portuguese Past Tenses
    • Authors: Ferreira M.
      Pages: 633 - 657
Abstract: This article investigates the semantics of Portuguese past tenses, focusing on their indexical behavior. I show that under certain circumstances, even when they are used anaphorically and refer to a contextually salient interval, these past tense heads can denote intervals that do not precede the speech time. I argue that the best way to capture this behavior is to construe its presupposition as a shiftable indexical (Schlenker 2003; Anand 2006), with a meaning roughly paraphrasable as ‘earlier than τ(c)’, with τ(c) being set to some context (attitude-like) time, not necessarily the speech time. I also argue that non-anaphoric uses of the Portuguese verb form called Pretérito Perfeito should be analyzed as present tense + perfect aspect combinations, as was suggested in Giorgi & Pianesi (1998). In particular, I show that Portuguese instantiates what is called double-access readings in past under past configurations that mimic the more well-known cases involving embedded present tenses in attitudinal contexts (Ogihara 1996; Abusch 1997, inter alia).

  • No Delay for Some Inferences
    • Authors: Foppolo F; Marelli M.
      Pages: 659 - 681
Abstract: We present an eye-tracking study on the incremental derivation of the some-but-not-all scalar implicature (SI) associated to the scalar quantifier some. This question has been the matter of a vivid debate, both in linguistics and in psycholinguistics (Chemla & Singh 2014a,b). Experimentally, it was addressed by means of eye-tracking and different results were obtained: while Huang & Snedeker (2009) found evidence for a delay of some with respect to all, Grodner et al. (2010) argued for a rapid integration of pragmatic some. More recently, Breheny et al. (2013a,b) raised some criticism on the paradigm employed in those studies and contributed with a looking-while-listening task showing incremental derivation of the scalar inference. We first raise some methodological questions, arguing that the paradigm used in previous studies was not apt to distinguish whether a scalar inference was derived or not, for different reasons. By means of a novel visual-world eye-tracking experiment in which we exploit the notion of focus in the activation of scalar alternatives, we show new evidence for the incremental derivation of the pragmatic some-but-not-all interpretation of some. We interpret these results within a grammatical approach to SIs (Chierchia et al. 2012; Chierchia 2013), according to which, when scalar alternatives are active, the SI is factored in locally and incrementally during the on-line processing of the scalar quantifier.

  • Modality, Weights and Inconsistent Premise Sets
    • Authors: Silk A.
      Pages: 683 - 707
Abstract: It is a commonplace that some of our desires are stronger than others; that certain values and norms are more important than others; and that states of affairs can be more likely than others. Some authors have claimed that the classic premise semantics for modals in linguistic semantics fails to capture how the truth conditions of modal sentences can be sensitive to such differences in strength and priority. I develop an interpretation of the classic premise semantic framework that captures various ways in which weights and priorities can affect the interpretation of modals. Modals, on the standard semantics, receive their interpretation from contextually supplied functions from worlds to premise sets (“conversational backgrounds”). I propose that we understand these functions as encoding the content of an intuitively relevant body of considerations (conditional norms, preferences, expectations, etc). The world-indexed premise sets that figure in the truth conditions of modal sentences represent what follows from these considerations given the relevant circumstances in the evaluation world. Facts about weights and priorities are encoded not in the individual premise sets (or in additional operations defined on them), but in how premise sets are assigned across worlds by the given conversational background. Next I offer one way of extending the account to provide a treatment of certain comparative modal sentences. The proposed analyses capture various inference patterns involving modal auxiliaries, comparatives, and equatives, improving on certain previous approaches to graded modality within the classic framework. The paper concludes with several theoretical reflections on the relation between the semantics of modals and the logic of weights and priorities. The account developed in this article locates a crucial role for research on proper reasoning involving weights and priorities without building the findings of this research into the conventional meaning of modal language.
