  • Urban Anxieties in Davao Horror Short Films

    • Authors: Katrina Ross A. Tan, Laurence Marvin S. Castillo
Abstract: The essay examines how horror shor t f ilms produced by independent filmmakers based in Davao City in southern Philippines function as imaginative mediations of urban anxieties in the region. Discussing f irst existing scholarship on Philippine horror cinema, the essay then maps the emergence of regional filmmaking in contemporary independent cinema before briefly touching on the ways Filipino mainstream and independent films construct urban spaces. As the analysis shows, the horror short films articulate people’s anxieties over socio-economic and political realities experienced in Davao, such as extrajudicial killings, enactment of a pioneering anti-discrimination ordinance, urban diaspora, and cosmopolitanism. In addition, they reveal people’s complex views and attitudes towards urbanization and modernity against the specter of rurality in Davao City. The paper argues that these films imagine, not just the uneasy position of a regional city in the national topography shaped by the socio-economic operations of globalization, but also the anxiety of a Third World formation hounded by the specter of uneven development. Keywords: Regional cinema, horror films, short films, Davao City

  • Manning the World: Staging Filipino Migrant Masculinities in Katas ng

    • Authors: Oscar Tantoco Serquiña; Jr.
Abstract: This essay revisits and analyzes the 1987 play of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) titled Katas ng Saudi, which features four Filipino construction workers during the height of oil-fueled construction industries in the Persian Gulf. It employs the tropes of masculinity, nation, and migration to account not only for that sociohistorical moment when a massive tide of Filipino men (husbands and fathers mostly) comprised the initial phase of the so-called third wave of migration from the Philippines, but also for the hypermasculinity that pervades national, migrant, and diasporic discourses. What happens to male subjects when the patriarchal virility that they believe to possess as agency, or as an access to a labor circulation generative of prof it, is displaced from its reif ied supremacies and consequently lapses into inutility within migratory or diasporic conditions' This essay explains the entwinement of masculinity, nation, labor migration, and diaspora, particularly through the negotiated manhood of migrant workers who are regarded as breadwinners, guardians, and pillars of the homeland, on the one hand, but simultaneously perceived as racialized, stratif ied, and sexualized workers of the world, on the other. An interrogation of Katas ng Saudi’s melodrama, specifically the affordances that this theatrical genre provides in foregrounding and understanding issues of migrant masculinities, concludes the discussion. Keywords: Philippine plays, labor migration, Filipino diaspora, PETA

  • Panata, Pagtitipon, Pagdiriwang: A Preliminary Contextualization of
           Cultural Performances in the Philippines

    • Authors: Sir Anril Pineda Tiatco
Abstract: Cultural performance f irst appeared in the language of the academic community when Milton Singer published his book When Great Tradition Modernizes (1972), in which he proposed cultural performance as a unit of observation in anthropological inquiry. Since then, cultural performance has become a useful tool to provide a frame for the understanding of the self, the society and culture. This essay reflects on the concept of cultural performance in a preliminary attempt to historicize and to contextualize it using Philippine culture as a starting point. The first part is a descriptive illustration on how the term evolved from being a social scientif ic concept to an important subject in the humanities, particularly in the fields of theatre and performance studies. Included in this section is a proposal based on reflections by anthropologists, folklorists and performance scholars for a model illustrating some identifiable markers that signify an activity as a cultural performance. The second part is a paradigmatic schematization on the specif ics of how cultural performance may be understood in the context of the Philippines. Using the phenomena of panata, pagtitipon and pagdiriwang, this paper argues that Philippine cultural performances are artistic communications in small groups performed publicly as a community gathering, even if the intentions of many performers are personal. The preliminary arguments found in this essay are based mostly on sporadic f ield notes in various locales in the archipelago. Keywords: Cultural performance, Performance Studies, Philippine festivals, ritual, spectacle, ritual and festival studies

  • The Leccio: Ethnicity and Indigeneity in the Ilokano’s Observance of
           Semana Santa

    • Authors: Roland Erwin P. Rabang
Abstract: The leccio is a form of lamentation by Mary, the mother of Jesus based on the suffering and death by crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This lament is likened to the dung-aw, the Ilokano practice of mourning the dead, and usually practiced by older women. It is similar in form to the dung-aw but in delivery, the leccio is performed through a musical structure. Meanwhile, the dung-aw is an actual tearful lamentation, a sentiment uttered by the bereaved and it is a litany of grief, anguish and pain (Anima 1976). If the dung-aw provides the framework for the leccio and the former is regarded as a practice that is rooted in Ilokano culture, then the leccio is just as culturally rooted. Often compared to the pasyon of the Tagalogs, the leccio is, however, markedly different in some key aspects. The pasyon is scripture-based, while the leccio’s scriptural leanings is optional and merely provides a context to a narrative that is based entirely on a mother’s remembrances and pining for a child that she had raised, now deceased. The pasyon is the length of one book and is performed through the night in a pabasa, while the leccio is performed inside of 20 minutes. In terms of mood, the pasyon shifts from a breezy waltz tempo to a sprightly marching rhythm. The leccio, on the other hand, is consistently downcast and melancholic. The leccio and the pasyon are “grounded in local traditions” (Cordero-Fernando 2000), chants whose phrasing dates back to the datus (which) give Lent its unmistakeable, uncanny character. Described by Cordero-Fernando (2000) as “paraliturgy,” the leccio is a local tradition which has a public character, but unlike the Mass, does not form part of the Church’s off icial liturgy. Keywords: Cultural Studies, ethnic, folk Catholicism, Ilokano, indigenous, oral tradition

  • Ang mga Ideolohiyang Politikal na Nakapaloob sa Rosales Saga ni F. Sionil

    • Authors: Joshua Mariz Felicilda, F.P.A. Demeterio III
Abstract: Layunin ng papel na tukuyin ang mga ideolohiyang politikal na nakapaloob sa limang nobela ng Rosales Saga ni F. Sionil Jose: ang The Pretenders; My Brother, My Executioner; Tree; Mass; at Poon. Mga Susing Salita: Ideolohikong Ispektrum, Hans Slomp, Ideolohiyang Politikal, Rosales Saga, F. • Between Consumerism and Anticolonialism: Detergent Advertisements in
           Iranian State Television

    • Authors: Azra Ghandeharion, Mahboobeh Rostami
Abstract: This paper traces how 532 detergent advertisements broadcast by Iranian State Television from 2011 to 2015 exploit Western or Western-like names and words as a synthesis of Western influence and Iran’s anti-colonial discourse in post-revolutionary era (i.e.: the Islamic Revolution of 1979). According to the Law of the Parliament of Islamic Republic of Iran, choosing or using an alien word for national organizations or products is forbidden. Despite anti-colonial policies, the use of Western words or names and a hybrid strategy in the exploitation of Western-like terms is evident; many advertisements used both strategies (491 Western and 343 hybrid out of 532 cases, respectively 92.29% and 64.47%). However, Iranian advertisements are not mere replicas of Western advertisements; they circumvent the Law and bridge Western colonial influence with Iran’s anti-colonial discourse. Keywords: Iranian State Television, advertisement, detergent, Western words, colonialism and anti-colonialism
