  • Contesting a National Cinema in Becoming: The Cinemalaya Philippine
           Independent Film Festival (2005-2014)

    • Authors: Emerald O. Flaviano
Abstract: Since its birth in 2005, the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival has proven itself a major force in the Philippine f ilm industry. Established with the twin goals of “[encouraging] the creation of new cinematic works by Filipino filmmakers—works that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity” and “[invigorating] Philippine filmmaking by developing a new breed of Filipino filmmakers,” Cinemalaya has been instrumental in the recent rise of what Tiongson (“The Rise of the Philippine New Wave Indie Film”) has called the “New Wave Indie” films. This recent wave of independent cinema, in turn, is taken to be the next significant moment in the history of Philippine national cinema. By considering the film festival—a spatiotemporally demarcated event and a unique discoursegenerating institution—as point of entry, this article discusses the contested process of constructing a coherent narrative of becoming of a national cinema. This process is found, more than ever, to surface resistance to any singular notion of “national cinema,” not least because of the inescapably transnational nature of all film production and consumption. It is within this context that any discussion about “saving” a Philippine national cinema is framed, particularly as to how international recognition has legitimized local independent cinema and influenced local spectatorship practices. Cinemalaya has helped revive a failing industry by giving shape to a new film movement, essentially def ined by contestation, as the f ilm festival’s experience in moderating the controversies it has found itself embroiled in has proven. More than anything, these contestations have brought to the fore previously unchallenged assumptions about what cinema a national public deserves to see. Keywords: Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival; Philippine independent cinema; Philippine national cinema; film festivals

  • Larawan ng Cama-cama Bilang Filipino: Ang Imahen ng Nacion ni Adelina
Gurrea (Portrait of the Cama-cama as Filipino: Adelina Gurrea's Image
           of Nacion)

    • Authors: Arbeen Regalado Acuña
Abstract: Adelina Gurrea’s “La Leyenda del Cama-cama,” a framed story in Cuentos de Juana tells how the relationship of the boy Ino-Dactu and the heron Mahamut eventually led to the existence of the cama-cama, a dwarf that is half-human and half-heron. By initially studying the main characters of the story subjected to analysis, this paper explores the idea of the nacion expressed in Gurrea’s cama-cama, interpreted as the conclusion of the implicit dungan contest between Ino-Dactu and Mahamut—with the former depicting the flitting Filipino [identity] that changes from time to time and the latter embodying the anxiety of foreign influence and perhaps the [passive] aggression of colonialism, fondly called benevolent assimilation. Like the spectre of comparisons, the human-heron hybrid, heirs of Ino-Dactu and Mahamut born during the Philippine pre-colonial period, continues to haunt and to shape the neocolonial present’s nation—as institutions of the country remain possessed by the modern cama-cama.Keywords: Philippine Literature in Spanish, dungan, nationalism, colonialism, hybridity, legend

  • From 'International Expositions' to 'Manila Carnival'
Presenting the Filipino as 'Tribal People' and 'Beauty
Queen' in Industrial and Commercial Expositions

    • Authors: Raul Casantusan Navarro
Abstract: Written as a contribution to the Bagong Kasaysayan (BAKAS) movement that currently traces the Philippine political and cultural transformations that happened between the years 1890 and 1913 (recognized as a crucial period in the development of national consciousness of the Filipino), this paper rereads colonial discourses that were attempts at speaking for the natives, images that were constituted to showcase the Filipino, and colonizer and colonized accounts that were testament to the said experience.Today, colonial narratives make up the historical archives that scholars refer back to make sense of the past and of the Filipino’s experience. All through the 1870s to the 1930s, trade fairs were intended to create an impression, a world, and an exotic image that was and is servile to colonial ends. Though intended to highlight technological advances of the time, the Filipino was introduced in a re-staged, re-created approximation of his person (i.e., “halfdemon,” heathen, etc.) in quasi situ. Lifted out of context, he was read as an “Other”— and therefore inferior. In line with the Pantayong Pananaw resolve, the paper is written in Filipino as a way of enriching, re-writing, and reclaiming the Filipino’s sense of history and identity. Keywords: Exposition, Manila Carnival, tribu, colonization, diskurso (discourse)

  • A Rhetorical Analysis of Isabelo F. de los Reyes's El
           Tinguian

    • Authors: Iö M. Jularbal
Abstract: El Tinguian published in 1888 was considered as the most complete study of the Tinguian at that time; it would mirror travel writings that were produced by Europeans about the region. With its accentuated notions on differentiation and otherings, de los Reyes’s “gaze” at the Tinguian served as his representation of the ethnolingusitic group to the world. El Tinguian presents itself as indeed a counter-discourse, an attempt to both refute and dispute several notions and nuances that tend to misrepresent the Tinguian. De los Reyes is in a position that shares colonial scientific knowledge with local experience and nativistic thinking which would make one assume that the legitimacy of the text should not even be questioned by anyone in the literary and ethnographic community. But what about the Tinguian' This paper theorizes that the gaze is often utilized on a race that is surmised incapable of speaking for itself. From a postcolonial stance, though himself a Filipino, de los Reyes utilizes a dominating colonial discourse and gazes on an abject other. De los Reyes’s defines and transforms the indigenous “other” into a set of categories to be utilized by the non-Tinguian as a basis for comparison and differentiation. This paper tackles Isabelo de los Reyes’s views and representations of the indigenous “other” in his study titled El Tinguian. In writing about the Tinguian, de los Reyes attempts to produce a more localized and nativistic view of the Tinguian which tends to differentiate itself from European writings about the people. But with his use of rhetorical devices in order to give meaning and understanding of the “other”, his study still delivers itself as an outsider’s view of the Tinguian. Keywords: Postcolonial, rhetorical analysis, travel writing, cultural criticism, Tinguian, Cordilleran history

  • Usbong na Pagtatáya: Tangka sa Pagpapalawig sa Katuturan ng Sosyolohiya
sa Pilipinas (Usbong na Pagtatáya Assessing the Affordance of Sociology
           in the Philippines)

    • Authors: Dennis S. Erasga
Abstract: The affordance of sociology implicates not only the “functionality” (Fil. gamit) element, but embraces the dimension of “relevance” (Fil. katuturan). Henceforth, the germaneness of sociology as a discipline in exploring Philippine social realities and in making sense of the Filipino actions and interactions can no longer be gauged in terms of casual invocation/legitimation of its (Western) discursive trappings. The usefulness of sociology can only be realized if it is used as a perspective and such requires a reflective stance on the whole praxis of appropriating the practices, protocols, and principles of the Eurocentric sociology. As a corollary issue, the paper investigates the ambivalence that characterized the disciplinal identity of sociology—an identity simultaneously forged by the literary and scientif ic traditions during the Industrial Revolution period. Filipino sociologists, however, can exploit this ambivalent identity to launch a sociology that is both faithful to the demands of the individual experiences of Filipinos and fateful to their collective history. The Filipinos’ pakikipagkapuwa is used as a tool to lift the ideological veil that shrouds the very practice of “theorizing” in the social sciences in the country, and at the same time, to present an effective example of the unique affordances of an autonomous sociology that thrives in the Philippines. Keywords: Reflective sociology, Sociology, social theory, literature, pakikipagkapuwa
