  • Faham Beruk Menurut Malik Bennabi dan Perkaitannya dengan Falsafah
Pendidikan Negara (Berukism from Malik Bennabi’s Thought and its
Relationship with the National Education Philosophy)

    • Authors: Khairiah Mohd Yassin
Kata kunci: Faham Beruk; Malik Bennabi; Falsafah Pendidikan Negara; keperibadian; keintelektualan   Berukism is an idea that is increasingly widespread and endemic in Malay Archipelago society. Berukism is the thought developed based on Malik Bennabi’s idea. His idea about the concept of man and humanity is universal and is also related to the people of the Malay world. This study aims to examine the concept of beruk from Bennabi’s perspectives, and analyse the relevance of this concept with the National Education Philosophy in Malaysia. This study adopts library research methods that was fully utilised in the process of collecting and analysing data. The data were collected through Bennabi’s major works. The conceptual framework was developed and enhanced using descriptive textual analysis. The idea of beruk will be further analysed in order to understand the concept of man in the development of civilisation. The study found that berukism evolves around Bennabi’s implicit ideas on the fundamental problems that plague mankind. His ideas on the question of humans focus on two aspects i.e. personality and intellect. The emphasis on these two aspects show the significance of this study due to its relationship with the key elements in the National Education Philosophy such as physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual (JERI). The physical, emotional and spiritual elements define the human personality, while the intellectual element relates to human intellect. Keywords: Berukism; Malik Bennabi; National Education Philosophy; personality; intellectual

  • Reviving the Sultanate of Sulu Through its Claim over Sabah, 1962-1986
(Menghidupkan Semula Institusi Kesultanan Sulu Melalui Tuntutan ke atas
           Sabah, 1962-1986)

    • Authors: Norizan Kadir, Suffian Mansor
Abstract: The aftermath of colonialism marked the end of a long-standing and glorious Sultanate of Sulu when it finally lost its power and supremacy under the newly-independent Philippines government. Even after the Philippines finally achieved its independence in 1946, the Sultanate of Sulu again failed to revive its old “kerajaan” as it had been abolished by the Philippines government in 1937. As the sultans and his followers had the historical experience regarding the idea of “kesultanan” and other socio-political concepts, the newly-introduced concept namely the nation-state whereby the idea of the boundary and a new nation was created making the traditional sultanate in desperation to sustain their sovereignty and power. The desperation to re-establish and revive their old glorious “kerajaan” eventually turned into a struggle and rigorous attempts to claim Sabah. Hence, this article aims to illustrate the survival of the Sultanate of Sulu after the death of the last sultan in 1936 and the efforts taken to preserve the sultanate within the modern nation-state system. The method of research used in this study involved library and archival research to obtain primary and secondary sources. Among the primary sources consulted in the study include British records, agreements, correspondence, newspapers, government gazettes, memoranda, speeches, and government official publications. Thus, this article lucidly concludes that various trends and approaches taken by the Sultan of Sulu and his heirs to claim Sabah were a part of their mission to sustain and revive the Sultanate of Sulu. Keywords: Sultanate of Sulu; Philippines government; Sabah and nation-state; sovereignty.

  • Relationship between Islamic Concept and Ethical Behaviour (Akhlak) of
being in Love among Youth (Hubungkait antara Konsep dan Tingkah Laku Etika
(Akhlak) Percintaan menurut Islam dalam kalangan Belia)

    • Authors: Syaidatun Nazirah Abu Zahrin, Fazilah Idris, Khairul Anwar Mastor, Aminudin Rozmi Ismail, Hanisah Osman
Abstract: The word love is synonymous with values of goodness. Romantic relationship needs guidance from religious knowledge in order to sustain an ethical love relationship. This is to avoid involvement in social illness. The impact of being unethical in loving behaviour includes increasing number of adultery and baby dumping cases. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between Muslim youth understanding, attitude and practice on the Concept of Love (COL) in Islam with values in Ethical Love Behaviour (ELB). The study was conducted among students at three types of higher education institutions in Malaysia which include public, private and the public Islamic universities with a total of 599 respondents.  The age of the respondents are from 18 to 23 years old (mean=19.5). Respondents were asked to complete Likert type and self-administered questionnaire assessing respondents’ understanding and attitude towards dimensions of love and values in ELB.  The psychological measurement tools in this study were developed by the researchers and named as the Instrument of Love in Islam (ICDI) and Ethics of Love (IAP). Findings show that understanding and attitude towards love in Islam is high; however, the practical aspect is moderate. The COL in Islam has a significant relationship with values in ELB. The findings of this study highlight the contributions of understanding and possessing positive attitude towards the COL in sustaining youth’s meaningful participation in values of ELB. The implication of this study suggests that understanding and appreciation of love is particularly relevant to youth in order to address problems of wrongful behaviours that result from misunderstanding of the concept of love. Keywords: Concept of love in Islam; Muslim youth; values; ethical love behaviour; attitude

Muara di Pantai Timur Semenanjung Malaysia (Sociocultural Change and
Social Mobility among Estuarial Communities in the East Coast of
           Peninsular Malaysia)

    • Authors: Nor Hayati Sa'at, Ibrahim Mamat, Wan Mohd Zaifurin Wan Nawang
Kata kunci: Perubahan sosiobudaya; mobiliti sosial; perubahan sosial; komuniti muara; komuniti nelayan ABSTRACT The issue of sociocultural change and social mobility among the estuarial communities is an important topic in the overall research on social change. Over the past two decades, the process of modernisation has rapidly taken place and impacted the communities significantly. This study aims to examine the issues regarding sociocultural change and the social mobility of the estuarial communities in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A survey was conducted on 596 respondents, where interviews and observations were carried out in 6 fishing villages in the estuaries located in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang. The research findings show that the sociocultural aspects seen through neighbourhood activities in the estuarial communities are still being held on to strongly and have become a practice of tradition. Social mobility through types of occupation has also changed, whereby working as a fisherman as the main source of income has gradually become less appealing to the younger generations. Youths of the younger generation are more inclined to work on land. The more open nature of the communities makes it more likely for social mobility to occur among the younger generation. The transformation of the estuarial communities due to education, as experienced by four generations, is examined in terms of the grandfather, the father, the respondent, and his child. Since the era of pre-independence, post-independence and upon the advent of the 21st century, ‘steps’ of mobility based on the level of education has increasingly been acknowledged by the estuarial communities as a main condition to lead a better life. Keywords: Sociocultural change; social mobility; social change; estuarial communities; fishing community

Sulu dan Pencerobohan Lahad Datu, 2013 (Non-State Actor and National
Security in Malaysia: The Royal Sulu Army and the Lahad Datu Intrusion,
           2013)

    • Authors: Ramli Dollah, Zainus Sagi Khusyairy Pangkas
Abstract: Sejak mencapai kemerdekaan, Malaysia berhadapan beberapa bentuk ancaman keselamatan seperti ancaman Komunis, konfrontasi Indonesia, tuntutan Filipina ke atas Sabah dan sebagainya.

Since independence, Malaysia has been facing various security threats such as the Communist threat, the Indonesia confrontation against Malaysia, the Philippine’s claim on Sabah and so on. However, the post-Cold War era have changed the way of understanding national security because most of the security threats are emanated from the non-state actors, such as terrorists group. Therefore, this paper discusses the intrusion by a group called the Royal Sulu Army (RSA) in Tanduo in 2013. This incidence proved that the non-state actors are also posing huge security threat to Malaysia’s national security. Meanwhile, this intrusion also demonstrates that the threat emanated from the non-state actor is more threatening than the traditional security elements that emphasises the importance of the state and the use of the military by other countries. In explaining the seriousness and securities of the threat posed by the RSA, this article employs several variables; first, the way the government responds to the threat; second, the number of death during the intrusion; third, panic and fear among the security forces and also the public; and fourth, the amount of money allocated to deal with the threat. This article argues that the threat by the non-state actors provides major implications in understanding the issue of national security in Malaysia. Therefore, a holistic approach is needed to tackle this threat. In preparing this article, in addition to the library research and also newspapers, the authors employ some other methods such as observation, interviews, field work and so on in order to understand the seriousness of the threat by the non-state actors. Keywords: Non-state actor; Malaysia; Security; Royal Sulu Army; Tanduo

  • Impak Pembangunan Pelancongan ke atas Persekitaran Manusia dan Fizikal
Komuniti Pulau Tioman (The Impact of Tourism Development on Humanity and
Physical Environment of Pulau Tioman Community)

    • Authors: Norlida Hanim Mohd Salleh, Md Shafiin Shukor, Siti Hajar Mohd Idris
Kata kunci: Pembangunan; pelancongan; Pulau Tioman; persekiran fizikal; persekitaran                         manusia   Tourism development will impact the local community, either from the perspective of human (economic, social, cultural) or physical environment. If the progress is beneficial, future development will be supported. Hence, tourism development in Pulau Tioman involved the local community and is expected to bring the impact mentioned above. As an evidence, by using a set of questionnaires, a total of 228 Pulau Tioman’s residents were interviewed to investigate whether they had been affected by the development of Pulau Tioman as a tourist destination. They were also interviewed on their support for the future development in Pulau Tioman. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) with Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) software was used in this study. The results showed that the community is positively impacted either from the economic, social, culture or environmental aspect. They are also satisfied with the impact, and the most significant impact is the social impact; followed by environmental, cultural and economic impacts. Hence, the local community supports the future development of the island. However, their support is dependent upon four major elements; and those are increase in salary, employment opportunities, as well as better basic and health facilities. As for policy implication, in order to stimulate the participation and ensuring support from the local community, the stakeholders should focus on what may be beneficial to the community. Keywords: Development; tourism; Tioman Island; physical environment; human surroundings

  • Pengaruh Budaya Tradisi dan Islam dalam Evolusi Adat dan Ritual Kematian
Komuniti Bajau (The Influence of Traditional Culture and Islam in
Evolutionary Transformation of Death Customs and Rituals among Bajau
           Community)

    • Authors: Halina Sendera Mohd Yakin
Kata kunci: Adat kematian; Bajau; sistem kepercayaan; Islam; evolusi   The aim of this study is to examine the transformation in the death customs and rituals among the Bajau community due to the influence of belief system and Islam. Understanding and signification of the nonverbal symbols in the Bajau death structure represent certain Bajau values from diverse dimensions. Some interrelated theoretical perspective was applied to support the study namely Levi-Strauss’ structuralism theory and semiotic theory. The qualitative research utilised the ethnographical thick description approach in order to illustrate and interpret the semiotics that underlined the death custom and ritual among the Bajau of Kota Belud. In line with the ethnographical approach, the data collection is conducted through participant observation and interview. Both death symbol and structure show that the influence of Hinduism-Buddhism cosmology has coloured and transformed the Bajau cultural practices and rituals which were previously formed based on the animism world. After the Bajau embraced Islam, their world-view and cosmology have changed. Nevertheless, the changes are more evolutionary and inconsistent. Thus, in the 21st century, the cultural behavior in death customs and rituals illustrates that the Bajau cultural practices seem to have the element of syncretism; that is to say the adaptation and amalgamation between traditional and new beliefs. Yet, it is not impossible to claim that changes will become more apparent in years to come because Islamisation is a continuing process. The traditional practice and ritual of the Bajau death custom live on as the meaning and function are still needed.                                                                                            Keywords: Death custom; Bajau; belief system; Islam; evolution

           Freud)

    • Authors: Nor Nazimi Mohd Mustaffa, Jaffary Awang, Aminudin
Katakunci: Sigmund Freud; tingkah laku beragama; faktor pembentukan; psikoanalitik; minda bawah sedar

  • Islam Agama Bagi Persekutuan: Satu Kajian Sejarah Perundangan (Islam as
The Religion of The Federation: A Study of Legal History)

    • Authors: Wan Ahmad Fauzi Wan Husain, Anisah Che Ngah, Mohamed Anwar Omar Din
Kata kunci: Islam; sekular; warisan; undang-undang watan; pengamanahan kedaulatan   This article seeks to rebut the opinion that claims article 3 of the Federal Constitution 1957 only recognises the adoption of Islam for official ceremony, as a matter of symbolic and Malaysia is said to be a secular State based on the Reid Commission report and the court decision in Che Omar Che Soh versus the Public Prosecutor. This qualitative study used the design of legal history. The findings show the indigenous elements have been continuosly ignored by the members of the legal and academic fraternities when interpreting Islamic position in the Federal Constitution, whereas there is already a constitution for Malaya that is Hukum Kanun Melaka before the arrival of the British, Islam is the law of the land for all the Malay Sultanates forming the Federation of Malaya in 1957 and the faith of the Malay Rulers; all those are the characteristics of the concept of indigenous sovereignty traced as early as the Malaccan Sultanate  and it has never been challenged by the British-Malaya administration.  In addition, the agreements made between the Malay Rulers with the British was a recognition for the indigenous sovereignty and a parameter ascertaining the validity of policies introduced by the British-Malaya throughtout their intervention in Malaya subject to the old Malayan Constitution. In conclusion, the accurate interpretation of Islam shall be based on the Quran and al-Sunnah because it is in line with the concept of the indigenous sovereignty inherited from the Malaccan Sultanate as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. The correct interpretation of Islam can manage multi-current issues affecting the application of the legal principles and policy making in Malaysia. Keywords: Islam; secular; legacy; law of the land; sovereign trust

Family and Organisational Career: Analysis through al-Tadayyun, al-Maqasid
           and al-Wasatiyyah Approaches)

    • Authors: Sharifah Hayaati Syed Ismail
Iaitu pertama, melalui 10 cara al-Tadayyun (penghayatan beragama). Kedua, PKK-I melalui pendekatan berteraskan maslahah (kebajikan) dan pendekatan secara awlawiyyat (keutamaan). Ketiga, PKK-I melalui pendekatan al-Wasatiyyah (berimbang, adil dan pilihan terbaik). Kata kunci: kerjaya; stres; al-Tadayyun; al-Maqasid; al-Wasatiyyah  Women, family and career are three inseparable entities in the development of public life today especially with an increasing total number of womens’ participation in employment. However, research findings indicate a failure in managing family and career resulting in increase of stress at the workplace. Let alone the demand to improve work performance, has made managing between family and career as a new challenge. There are views that link these symptoms with the cause of the occurrence of domestic social fractures. Literature reviews found the concepts of Islam particularly known as al-Tadayyun, al-Maqasid and al-Wasatiyyah as Family and Career Management (FCM) approaches have yet to be discussed. By analysing texts and literature, this article analyses how the three concepts of al-Tadayyun, al-Maqasid and al-Wasatiyyah could become a new approach in dealing with FCM. This writing identifies issues related to the FCM, describes three Islamic concepts and how they can potentially be used as an approach for the FCM. In addition, it aims to fill in the gap in the literature that relates to FCM from an Islamic perspective. Results of analysis show that the three Islamic concepts are potential and relevant for FCM-Islamic (FCM-I) framework, main value principles and approaches in giving priority, attention, internal strength and character development, especially when faced with work and family stress. These are achieved firstly, through  the 10 ways of al-Tadayyun (appreciation of religion). Secondly, through an element of maslahah (welfare) and awlawiyyat (priority) and thirdly, through Wasatiyyah (balanced, fair and best choice) approaches. Keywords: Career; stress; al-Tadayyun; al-Maqasid; al-Wasatiyyah

Abstract: Isu Pendidikan Islam (hadith) sentiasa mendapat perhatian dikaji penyelidik bidang pendidikan ekoran terdapat kelemahan dalam proses Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran (P&P). Kata kunci: Pengajaran dan pembelajaran hadith; metododologi; persepsi; guru; pelajar Thanawi dan Aliyyah    The issue of Islamic Education (hadith) has always been the concern of researchers in education due to weakness in Teaching and Learning (T&L) processes. Traditional teaching methods often receive criticism from the constructivism method because of the unobtrusive learning style factor with current progress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of  teaching hadith using the methodology of explanation and to examine the perceptions of the methodology applied to the teaching of  hadith towards students of Thanawi and Aliyyah in Darul cUlūm Iḥyā 'cUlūmuddīn Alor Setar. • Pemindaan Perkara 9 Perlembagaan Jepun dalam Pentadbiran Shinzo Abe
(Amendement of Article 9 Japanese Constitution in Shinzo Abe
           Administration)

    • Authors: Asmadi Hassan, Rohayati Paidi, Mohd Ikbal Mohd Huda
Abstract: Perlembagaan Jepun digubal oleh Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP) pada Februari 1946. Majoriti rakyat Jepun masih menentang rancangan beliau. Abe sepatutnya memahamkan rakyat terlebih dahulu mengenai rancangan beliau kerana ia melibatkan kehidupan seharian mereka. Kata kunci: Perlembagaan Jepun; Perkara 9; Shinzo Abe; Parti Liberal Demokrat; negara normal  Japanese constitution was drafted by the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers in February 1946. The constitution especially Article 9 was to curb the freedom of Japanese army and it became a major issue in Japan. Therefore, there was a pressure to amend the constitution, particularly by the ruling party, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Article 9 was no longer suitable with the current political situation and it was continually reiterated by the Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. Abe emphasized two priorities in his administration, first, to rebuild Japanese economy through "Abenomics" and second, making Japan as a normal country by amending Article 9. This article examines the amendment of Article 9 by Abe’s administration, including why Article 9 needs to be amended, Abe's efforts to materialize the amendment, response from the United States, China and Korea, and finally, support from the Japanese people. The analysis of this article found that the United States supported the normalization of Japan, but not for China and Korea. However Abe should pay more attention to the consent of the Japanese people. Although the LDP has a majority in both houses of Parliament, but special referendum is a major obstacle. Majority of the Japanese people still opposes his plans.
