  • Adaptasi Penjaga Utama dalam Penjagaan Pesakit Demensia (Dementia Patients
           Primary Caregivers’ Adaptations to Caregiving)

    • Authors: Rohana Mukahar, Rahimah Ibrahim, Azizah Pondar, Siti Suhailah Abdullah
Kata kunci: Penjaga utama; adaptasi dalam penjagaan; pesakit demensia; kajian kualitatif; penjagaan pesakit demensia                                                        Abstract Malaysia will be gazetted as ageing country when older populations keep increasing from time to time. These scenario indicates that many of the elderly people will have the possibility to become dementia, and many of us are finding themselves becoming caregivers for elderly people with dementia. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand and describe how the primary caregivers of patients with dementia adapt themselves in caregiving situation. Phenomenological approach was used for this qualitative study. The inclusion criteria of participants were caregivers of dementia patients (mild to moderate stage), age of caregivers was 21 and above, and they are primary caregiver of dementia patient. Ten family caregivers  who accompanied  dementia patients to the Memory Clinic at Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia were interviewed. The results revealed four ways were used by primary caregivers to adapt with caregiving situation. The primary caregivers managed to be calm, pray to God, avoid the caregiving situation, and solve problems in caregiving.  Most of the primary caregivers managed to avoid the caregiving situation in order to reduce stress and lighten their burden. The primary caregivers’ personal adaptations skills alone may be insufficient to relieve their stress and burden. They may need attention and support from others when they experience pressure and stress, regardless of their personal resources. Therefore the findings of the study suggest that caregivers’ support group should be created by healthcare provider and relevant parties, so that they can share their experiences and use it as a platform to ventilate their pressure and stress in caregiving. Keywords: Primary caregiver; dementia patients; adaptations in caregiving; qualitative study; caregiving of dementia patients

  • Transformation of Muslim Behaviour towards Sustainable Environment:
Perspectives of Non-Governmental Organisations in Klang Valley
(Transformasi Tingkah Laku Muslim ke arah Kelestarian Alam Sekitar:
Perspektif Pertubuhan Bukan Kerajaan di Lembah Klang)

    • Authors: Mashitoh Yaacob, Zubaidah Mohd Nasir, W. Syairah Hazwani W. Petera, Hassan Basri, Ibnor Azli Ibrahim, Mohd Yusof Othman, Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim, Azami Zaharim, Mazlin Mokhtar
Abstract: Man cannot depend solely on science and technology to solve environmental problems. In fact, scholars and environmentalists have observed that some of the causes of environmental deterioration are rooted in science and technology. It is clear that environmental problems need ethical solution. However, environmentally ethical behaviour (EEB) is often overlooked in the life of a Muslim. This behaviour is important, particularly, to ensure the future of civilization of the Islamic world and, generally, civilization as a whole. Given the fact that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are more sensitive to the transformation of public behaviour compared to other groups, this article discusses the perspectives of Malaysian NGOs on the transformation of Muslim EEB in Malaysia in three aspects: (a) The type of EEB practiced by Muslims in Malaysia; (b) The transformation process of EEB experienced by Muslims in Malaysia; and (c) Whether or not the transformation of EEB of Muslims in Malaysia is motivated by the values advocated by Islam. The research adopted a qualitative research method of data collection, i.e., focus group discussions (FGDs). FGD’s results illustrated that: (a) Pre-cycling, reusing and recycling are the common types of EEB practiced by Muslims in Malaysia; (b) The transformation process of EEB experienced by Muslims in Malaysia is not accelerating at the speed that we hoped for; and (c) The transformation of EEB of Muslims in Malaysia is motivated more by economic and social factors as well as level of education and regulation enforcement compared to the values advocated by Islam.

  • Public Development Sustainability Values: A Case Study in Sepang Malaysia
(Menilai Ciri Kelestarian Nilai Pembangunan Masyarakat di Malaysia: Satu
           Kajian Kes di Sepang Malaysia)

    • Authors: Zurina Mahadi, Rabiatul Jannah Mohamad, Hukil Sino
Abstract: The concept of sustainable development has been implemented in Malaysia for more than a decade. Nevertheless, the issues of unsustainability still persist, raising questions about whether or not the values held by local populations pertaining to development processes are compatible with sustainable development values. This study was conducted in Sepang, Selangor to explore the values of public in the development process by using qualitative approach. The data was gathered from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with the participants recruited through purposive sampling.  Fourty participants have participated in this study. The transcript was analysed using thematic analysis to identify the theme values and the values categories. This study has identified four themes and twelve categories of public values in development. The themes were freedom, security, environment and development. The sustainability characteristics of every theme and category were explored by comparing them to existing established sustainable development values. It was evident that every theme and category of values displays sustainability characteristics despite public limited knowledge about sustainable development concepts. These findings therefore concluded that in principle, the unsustainability issues in this area did not result from the incompatibility of public development values with those of sustainable development. The implication of these findings is that the value systems of local people are already in harmony with the concept of sustainable development and could be effectively integrated into the local sustainable development framework. Keywords: Values; sustainable development; local; engagement; empowerment

Kelapa Sawit Pekebun Kecil (Exploring the Reflection of Rational Sympathy
of Middlemen within the Palm Oil Smallholders’ Supply Chain)

    • Authors: Suraiya Ishak, Mohd Yusof Hussain, Ahmad Raflis Che Omar, Abd Hair Awang, Novel Lyndon
Abstract The middlemen remain as an essential element in the value chain of agricultural produce.  This study aims to examine the middlemen roles in agriculture produce market based on the Theory of Moral Sentiment.  The explanation reflects the implementation of rational sympathy and benevolence of middlemen actions according to Moral Sentiment Theory argument.  This study emphasizes the context of palm fruit middlemen (FD) in Malaysia.  This study employs in-depth interview with four palm fruit dealers in Sabak Bernam, Selangor, Malaysia.  The finding indicates that the middlemens’ roles have reflected the rational sympathize and benevolence as in the Moral Sentiment Theory.  Execution of moral sentiment is found in two aspects, namely the commercial and social aspects.  The rational sympathy is translated in the form of pure commercial services such as purchase of raw produces, farm management, selling of farm necessities and transportation.  Although they are paid services, the small holders gain advantages from such services.  On the other hand, the middlemen also obtain cash advance and farm items credit which reflects FD benevolence to willingly forgo potential of extra profit.   Although repayment of credits is deductable from the selling proceeds, small palm holders still gain benefits from the service as it was provided without the need of collateral, compliance of rigid loan application procedures, finance charges and with flexible payback arrangement.  Therefore, middlemen activities are in line with the moral sentiment and has explicitly underlies the particular FD context. Policy implications have been proposed such as increasing the numbers of FD in the market and colloboration of information and actions between FD-MPOB.Keywords: middlemen; small holder; benevolence; sympathy; moral sentiment

  • Muhajir Penjana Interaksi dan Toleransi Beragama Saudara
Baru-Muslim-Non-Muslim (Muhajir Interactional Generator and Religious
           Tolerance among New Muslim-Muslim-Non-Muslim)

    • Authors: Khadijah Mohd Khambali, Azarudin Awang, Suraya Sintang, Nur Farhana Abdul Rahman, Wan Adli Wan Ramli, Khairul Nizam Mat Karim
Kata kunci: Mualaf; penjana interaksi; toleransi beragama; hubungan Muhajir-Muslim-non-Muslim; Malaysia AbstractNew brothers, New Muslim and Mualaf are the terms that are often referred to as individuals who began to cultivate the religion of Islam. In the Malaysian context, in reality they are individuals who had embraced Islam for many years. This situation may affect the relation and integration in the community of Saudara Kita, Muslim origin and non-Muslim family members. Furthermore, it raises the issue of ethnic misunderstanding due to the issues that linger in the life of Saudara Kita since Saudara Kita in the context of Malaysia is more prominent as a generator in religious interaction among various ethnic groups in Malaysia. This study aims to see the experience of religious tolerance among Muhajir-Muslim-non-Muslim. Data was obtained using qualitative method which focussed on interviews with twenty Muhajirin Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. The results highlighted the culture of tolerance among Muslim-non-Muslim-Muhajir in the diversity of living together. This relationship is demonstrated through effective relations, meetings and living together that form friendship, brotherhood and affinity across religious boundaries. This shows Muhajir play a role in fostering tolerance especially in relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia Keywords: Mualaf; generator of interactions; religious tolerance; Muhajir-Muslim-non-Muslim relation; Malaysia

  • Gaya Pengurusan Konflik dan Kesannya Terhadap Institusi Kekeluargaan dalam
Novel Saga (Conflict Management Styles and Its Impact on Family
           Institution in Novel Saga)

    • Authors: Norazlina Mohd Kiram, Raja Masittah Raja Ariffin, Jama’yah Zakaria
ABSTRACT In high context culture, maintenance of 'face' is very important as it is closely linked with the person’s dignity and self-respect which is fundamental to conflict existence. Conflict occurs due to differences in goals, values and individual perceptions. Conflict in the family institution is inevitable, nevertheless it can be dealt by using appropriate conflict management styles. Conflict management style employed depends on the person's perception towards the particular conflict as to whether it is seen as negative, positive, or an opportunity to be more creative. The objective of this study  is to examine the conflict management styles used and its impact towards  family institution and  to formulate conflict management styles which could  evade disintegration in family unity. Data is taken from nine events in the novel SAGA written by Abdul Talib Mohd. Hassan and analyse using qualitative approach and content analysis. This study uses Management  Theory of Face developed by Ting-Toomey which focuses on  Conflict Management Styles.  There are five conflict management styles; obliging, compromy, domination, and integration. The findings show that conflicts happened  due to shame and disgrace which may affect individual and family ‘face’. Every conflict management style chosen may affect family relationships positively or negatively. Individual personality influences conflict management style and affect the harmony in a family. Keywords: Conflict; conflict management style; ‘face’; high context culture; family institution

  • Sorotan Perbezaan Had Kifayah Perbelanjaan Keperluan Asasi dan Kesannya
dalam Pengiraan Zakat Pendapatan (A Review on the Differences of Had
Kifayah of Basic Necessities Expenses and Its Impact on Income Zakat
           Calculation)

    • Authors: Fidlizan Muhammad, Salwa Amirah Awang, Mohd Yahya Mohd Hussin, Abdul Majid Tahir Mohamed
Abstract: Kajian ini bertujuan menganalisis perbezaan jumlah bayaran zakat pendapatan individu berdasarkan had kifayah perbelanjaan keperluan asasi hidup (PKA) yang ditetapkan dalam pengiraan zakat pendapatan di Malaysia.
AbstractThis study analyzes the individual income zakat payment total differences based on Had Kifayah (Sufficiency Bar) of basic life necessities expenses (BLNE) in Malaysia. The unstandardized BLNE causes the inconsistency in the payment of income zakat although the payers have the same income and expenses. In this study, information about BLNE in each state is analysed qualitatively to understand the unstandardised pattern. Also, the calculation of income zakat with the assumption that payers have similar income and expenses is done by simulation, aided by online zakat calculator of each state religious council. The result indicates that there are similarities and differences in the types and rates employed. Expenses for ownself, spouse and children are among the expenses list used by all states in the zakat calculation. Nevertheless, a more detailed expenses categorization for spouse and children with different rates and new expenses category exercised in some states, such as chronic disease treatment, disabled dependents and vehicle and home installment, affect the calculation of the total individual income zakat. The simulation analysis shows that Perlis has the smallest total payment, while Kedah has the highest. Thus, this study finds that the unstandardized BLNE leads to the widespread of zakat payment across states. The implication of this study demonstrates that the differences in the BLNE adopted by states requires a review.  The rationale of considering the types of BLNE is crucial in giving justice for zakat payers and recipients as practised under the tax exemption in the taxation system. Keywords: Income zakat; had kifayah; zakat collection; balance; Islamic economy

    • Authors: Siti Hajar Abu Bakar Ah, Noralina Omar, Zaiton Azman
Abstract: Setiap kanak-kanak berhak memenuhi keperluan asasi masing-masing.

Abstract: Wanita pertengahan usia berkemungkinan untuk mengalami sindrom kekosongan, menopaus, masalah kesihatan, gangguan tidur, lethargi, penambahan berat badan dan masalah tumpuan. • Validity and Psychometric Properties of Malay Translated Religious
Orientation Scale-Revised among Malaysian Adult Samples (Kesahan dan
Sifat-Sifat Psikometrik Skala Orientasi Keagamaan-Semakan yang
diterjemahkan dalam Bahasa Malaysia dalam Kalangan Sampel Dewasa Malaysia)

    • Authors: Mohammad Rahim Kamaluddin, Rohany Nasir, Wan Shahrazad Wan Sulaiman, Rozainee Khairudin, Zainah Ahmad Zamani
Abstract: Religious Orientation Scale-Revised (ROS-R) has been used increasingly as an important measure in psychology of religion based researches and widely administered in cross-cultural settings. Unfortunately, there is no valid and reliable ROS-R available in Malay language to assess religious orientations among Malaysians. With that in mind, the present study aims to validate and document the psychometric properties of Malay translated ROS-R (henceforth, M-ROS-R) among sample of Malaysian adults. This study commenced with Forward-Backward translations and was followed by content and face validities. Subsequently, a cross-sectional study was conducted among Malaysian adults (n = 226) using convenience sampling method for the purpose of construct and factorial validations. Later, construct and factorial validity was performed via Exploratory Factor Analysis using Principal Component Analysis with Varimax rotation. Finally, reliability testing was performed to determine the internal consistency of the items which was achieved using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient method (α). The factor loading consisted of three factors with a total variance of 64.76%. The final version of M-ROS-R consisted of 14 items with Factor 1 (Intrinsic Orientation) comprised of 8 items, Factor 2 (Extrinsic-Socially Orientated) with 3 items while Factor 3 (Extrinsic-Personally Orientated) constituted 3 items. The internal consistency values of the factors ranged between 0.68 and 0.86, indicating the scale is reliable. The intercorrelations between factors were also significant with each other. M-ROS-R was concluded as a valid and reliable scale to measure and assess religious orientations among Malaysians. Keywords: Internal consistency; psychometric properties; religiosity; Religious Orientation Scale-Revised; validation  ABSTRAK Religious Orientation Scale-Revised (Skala Orientasi Keagamaan-Semakan; ROS-R) telah semakin banyak digunakan sebagai pengukuran penting dalam kajian berasaskan psikologi keagamaan dan ditadbirkan secara meluas merentasi budaya.
