  • The Energy-Gender Nexus: A Case Study among Urban and Peri-urban Female
Headed Households in Arba-Minch Town, Southern Ethiopia
    • Authors: Ahmed Mustefa, Tebarek Lika
Abstract: The study was conducted in Southern Ethiopia with the objective of investigating
the linkages between energy and gender among urban female-headed households
(FHHs) residing both in and surrounding parts of Arba-Minch Town. The research
design is mainly based on the quantitative methods and complemented with the
qualitative ones. 272 sample FHHs were selected based on random sampling
technique and data were collected using questionnaires, focus group discussions
and key informant interviews. To determine the relationship and identify factors
explaining households’ cooking fuels consumption, correlation and linear
regression models were used. Data on the consumption of energy sources were
gathered in terms of expenditures which were later converted to energy heat values
measured in terms of Mega Joule. Results of the study reveal that regardless of
their economic status, the majority of FHHs depended on wood fuels as their
primary source of cooking energy. In the study area, commercial cooking fuels
have become increasingly scarce and expensive, and the costs of modern cooking
appliances are beyond the purchasing ability of most of FHHs. It is becoming
increasingly difficult for FHHs to obtain affordable energy technologies that
convert energy to useful services. A significant portion of FHHs continue to suffer
as their incomes have not kept pace with the rising prices. Increasing end-use
efficiency should be given greater emphasis as an important prerequisite by
employing proper end-use technologies to change FHHs’ cooking practices so that
household energy-related problems be tackled and energy can lead to more
      gender- equitable sustainable livelihoods.

  • Enabling Instruments, Encouraging Results, and Unmet Challenges:
Females’ Higher Education Access in Ethiopia
    • Authors: Enguday Ademe
Abstract: This study examined the policy environment available to enhance females’ access to higher education in Ethiopia and the success stories as a result. Moreover, it explored challenges that defy international, regional and national instruments and efforts. A qualitative descriptive method was used and semi-structured key informant interviews, focus group discussion, and document review were employed to collect relevant data. Primary data were obtained from a State Minister, a Directorate Director and three experts (within the same directorate) of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. Secondary data were secured by reviewing many documents, including the Ethiopian Constitution and the Education and Training Policy. The findings reveal that there is a favourable policy environment or there are many instruments that are aimed at addressing the issue of females’ access to higher education. As a result, there are overall improvements in females’ university enrolments but still there is a long way to go to declare victory. Deeprooted problems remained deep. The issue of females’ access to higher education is being side-lined even before satisfactory results are achieved. It is suggested that the issue should remain among the country’s priorities since the problem can be solved, but only slowly.

  • Dynamics of the Cult of Sheik Hussein of Bale, Ethiopia: Its Course and
Curse of the Extremists, a Historical Perspective
    • Authors: Kefyalew Tessema Semu
Abstract: This article explores historical dynamics, values and emerging threats to the cult of Sheik Hussein of Bale. Oral, archival and secondary sources have been collected and crosschecked in the interpretation. Sheik Hussein, an Islamic wali who lived about 800 years ago at a sanctuary named after him known as Dirre Sheik Hussein, is the icon of Bale. His connection to the blood line of Prophet Mohammed, as well as his spiritual graces and deeds in the Isalmization of Bale were factors behind his fame, which led to his veneration as a saint while already he was alive and fully transformed into a cult, after his death. The cult, which evolved from the pre-Islamic muudaa tradition of the Oromo, consists of pilgrimages, baaroo and rituals at his shrine twice a year. It has immense potential for tourism that fascinates even the pilgrims, involving tour of scenic landscapes, famous shrines and singing in honor of the saint and Allah. However, due to the proliferation of extremist teachings of the Salafists and Wahabbists, attacks on pilgrims and marginalization of adherents have been strengthening. Even the extremists vow to destroy the shrine. There were problems arising from lack of viable conservation schemes and ample studies that jeopardized the heritage constraining its registration as Permanent World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Thus, building the capacity of the darga, community based conservation of the shrine and promoting tolerance embedded in the cult are required to sustain the heritage calling for a lookout.

  • Furnace Fire and Women: Agents of Iron Production and Social Reproduction
    • Authors: Temesgen Burka
Abstract: We are all part of the people of the world whose discourses are wrapped in traditions, stories or some kind of myth. These might be about its origin or the fabrics that maintained it together or features that distinguish it from the rest of its kind or the other neighbor or far distant people. The life of the Oromo groups who live in most part of western Ethiopia south of the Blue Nile is no different from such a socio-cultural scheme. The result of an ethnoarchaeological endeavor I have conducted on traditional craft since the late 2004 to 2011 has revealed a lot about the cosmology of the society, which can readily be transmitted in the medium of technical ceramic-furnace which itself becomes more socially comprehensible intertwined with fire and woman. The data that is derived during the operational sequences of iron production processes have served as the bases to provide the social/ideological/ritual context surround the trade. Whereas it appears that, the non-physical element of iron smelting is trivial, I would argue, at least in wider Ethiopian context and particularly among the Oromo, that the production of iron tools through the combination of physical elements cannot be fully comprehended in the absence of its social/ritual components. In this regard, the paper also relates the myth of origin of the first smith, his first product of metallurgy and the significance of this myth in conceptualizing production and reproduction in this society. This paper concludes that the knowledge of iron smelting is the product of the views of the people developed in other realms of socio-economic life such as human procreation or agricultural production either in the decoration of technical ceramics or activities and usage of or exchanges of words among the workers during production activities. Such rich experience lends a means of putting together ingredients resulting in a material culture made of iron.

  • The Idea of Transmodern Ethiopia: A Perspective from Philosophy and Ethics
           of Liberation1
    • Authors: Walelign Shemsedin
Abstract: Transmodernity is a new philosophical paradigm that transcends the modern foundational ethos and as well differs from the postmodern critique. It is basically a call towards a just social order that gives priority to human life. It is inherently ethical and fundamentally liberational. This work looks into the insufficiency of Modern Ethiopian establishment in attaining an inclusive and pluralist arrangement. It assumes this establishment as a hegemonic totality that marginalizes its others. It argues that the Modern Ethiopian establishment is an ontologic totality that needs to be liberated and transformed. Based on Dussel’s Philosophy and Ethics of Liberation, Transmodern Ethiopia is anticipated as an entity that could transcend the Modern and come up with a different arrangement. This would be an ethical arrangement which accepts the other as other. The three principles of Ethics of Liberation (material principle, formal principle and feasibility principle) are used as an ethical framework for the construction.
