  • De la Commune aux massacres d’Arménie

    • Authors: Sylvie Brodziak

  • John M. Evans, Truth Held Hostage. America and the Armenian Genocide –
           What Then' What Now'

    • Authors: Julien Zarifian

  • Between Exposure and Erasure: The Armenian Heritage of Arapgir in
           Present-Day Eastern Turkey

    • Authors: Laurent Dissard

Abstract: This article will look at the massive outcry triggered by the Hamidian massacres of 1894-96 in Britain. It is almost absent from the historiography of the early Armenian Question in Britain (before 1915) to the point that the dominant historical consensus has it that the lot of Ottoman Armenians was a diplomatic concern to which the Britain remained aloof. This view will be challenged. It will be argued that the relative historiographical silence and error partly result from the apparent absence of traces of such an outcry (in the shape of public petitions) in collections that are expected to contain them – namely Foreign Office papers and the Houses of Parliament archives. Hypotheses as to why these petitions have not survived in such records will be looked into, since such an absence informs the view that the Armenian agitation in Britain at the time was very limited. This article will also attempt to sketch a history of the Armenophile movement between 1894-96 – thanks to previou...

  • Talin Suciyan, The Armenians in Modern Turkey: Post-Genocide Society,
           Politics and History

    • Authors: Boris Adjemian

  • Transforming Erzurum/Karin: The Social and Economic History of a
Multiethnic Ottoman City in the Nineteenth Century

    • Authors: Yaşar Tolga Cora
Abstract: This dissertation is a study of the Ottoman imperial order during the mid-nineteenth century, known as the age of reforms, the Tanzimat. Through the biographies of local Armenian notables, it examines societal change in the Armenian community of the city of Erzurum (Karin in Armenian), the capital city of an eponymous province on the Ottoman Empire’s borders with the Russian and Qajar Empires. The dissertation focuses on the ways in which the construction of the modern Ottoman state and societal changes in the Armenian community (millet) were enmeshed in this borderland city. Its primary goals are to shed light on the underexamined topic of social history of Armenian communities in the provinces in the mid-nineteenth century and to make both theoretical and analytical suggestions for similar endeavors in the future. By relocating Armenians’ experiences to the center of late Ottoman history, it aims to redefine the limits of the history of the empire and its historiography – what the...

  • Cultural Erasure: The Absorption and Forced Conversion of Armenian Women
           and Children, 1915-1916

    • Authors: Ümit Kurt
Abstract: Religious conversion and forced assimilation of Armenian women and children into Muslim households were two of the most significant structural components of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. In other words, Islamization of Armenian women and children – as well as imposition of Muslim culture, education, and traditions upon them – was one of the most significant aspects of the Armenian Genocide. Although conversion can be viewed as a survival mechanism for Armenian victims, in many cases, this strategy failed. Along with their friends, neighbors, and families, converts were also deported and exterminated in many provinces and districts throughout Anatolia during the genocide. This article primarily employs Ottoman archival materials to explore the conversion of Armenians as a bureaucratic process and the assimilation policies of the CUP government in the Armenian deportation and genocide. It analyzes the CUP’s official directives, disclosing how the conversion process was implemented at th...

  • Genocide and Humanitarian Resistance in Ottoman Syria, 1915-1916

    • Authors: Khatchig Mouradian
Abstract: This article provides a reassessment of what is referred to as the second phase of the Armenian genocide, emphasizing the role of an Armenian-led humanitarian network in saving thousands of lives. The scholarship (and the popular discourse) on humanitarian efforts during the Genocide focuses on western missionaries and consuls, who emerge as selfless heroes protecting and saving hundreds of thousands of helpless Armenians. Armenian agency is neglected. Here, it is argued that it was the Ottoman Armenians who drove this humanitarian resistance waged in the Ottoman Empire. Western humanitarianism provided tremendous material and moral support, yet it was the Armenians themselves who led the resistance effort and shouldered the larger share of the burden, distributing humanitarian aid and funds to deportees huddled in church and school courtyards and, ultimately, in concentration camps – despite the dangers involved. This Armenian-led humanitarian resistance network comprised of church...

    • Authors: Joceline Chabot, Marie-Michèle Doucet, Sylvia Kasparian
Da...
