  • International Photography Networks and Walter Hahn’s Museum for
           Photography, Dresden

    • Abstract: The Museum für Photographie, founded, developed and directed by Dr. Walter Hahn for only twelve years in the city of Dresden, has only recently emerged in scholarship on East German Photographic culture. Although the museum definitely enjoyed a relationship to the East German cultural authorities within the Cultural League, or Kulturbund, it does not sit easily in the historiographical category of ‘official’ photography in the GDR. Hahn’s version of the history of photography was challenging to the socialist establishment, which hampered the further development of the museum and did not preserve the project after Hahn’s death. Hahn’s ambitions to expand his museum and gain membership in an international community of collectors and museum professionals drove him to contact a tremendous number of figures throughout the world and led to much fruitful exchange on questions of the history of photography and the state of collections internationally. This article will address the degree to which Hahn’s networking through publications and correspondence and attempts at cultural diplomacy tied him more closely to the international community of photography collectors and photography museums – particularly in the West – than his Cultural League colleagues could ultimately sanction. It argues that Hahn and his museum represent a historical and historiographical anomaly that complicates the accepted narratives of East Germany history. Hahn’s interactions within the international museum community represent a significant instance of the international circuit of photographic images and literature during the Cold War. • Postcard Transfer across the Iron Curtain: Tourism and Transnational
Exchanges in Socialist Romania during the 1960s to 1980s

    • Abstract: The article examines the transfer of postcards across the Iron Curtain against the backdrop of international tourism in socialist Romania. In the 1960s, socialist Romania began to develop international tourism, especially with the capitalist West, because it wanted to acquire hard currencies and to improve its external image. Although the success of international tourism was short-lived, it sparked a movement of people, ideas and images across the Iron Curtain. As photos were more difficult to be carried out across the border – the law in socialist Romania required that films be developed in the country – postcards provided a means to personalize vacations in Romania, especially in the 1980s when restrictions became tighter. When sent from the capitalist West to Romania, postcards embodied the very image of the ‘West’, which the majority of socialist Romania’s citizens could not easily visit. • Life – Paris Match – Świat: East/West Image Transfer in the Weekly
Magazine Świat (1951-1969) and the Impact of the Magnum Style on
           Photo-Reportage in Poland

    • Abstract: Polish photo-reportage of the 1950s and 1960s was crucially shaped by the illustrated weekly newspaper Świat (The World, 1951–1969). The magazine was conceived in the heyday of Stalinism and the social- ist realist doctrine to keep pace with its Western counterparts Life, Paris Match or Picture Post during the Cold War. In the new political system, the social role of photography was to agitate, but the photo- editor-in-chief, Władysław Sławny (1907–1991), designed Świat in the style of Henry Cartier-Bresson’s ‘decisive moment’ aesthetics. He published the works of Magnum photographers and other Western colleagues. This article analyzes the massive transfer of knowledge, human resources and photography between Poland and France which owered in the 1950s. The transcultural exchange was implemented with the aid of personal contacts and editorial practice that promoted photo transfer from the West and corresponded with the atmosphere of the ‘thaw’ after Stalin’s death. It shows that photographers travelled eastwards as well as westwards, and that the Iron Curtain was visually more permeable in both directions than has previously been suggested.  Published on 2018-03-09 13:23:14

  • Through the Witness's Emotional Eyes: Bruno Barbey’s Portrait of

    • Abstract: The enforcement of martial law in Poland in December 1981, a major setback to the policy of détente, contributed to a cooling of international diplomacy and triggered a second phase in the Cold War. This analysis of the photo book Pologne by Magnum photographer Bruno Barbey, published in 1982, shows how the photo book commented on the political situation in Poland and gave a vivid testimony from major protagonists in the field. This article argues that the book was not merely a ‘documentary’, but also dared to offer a transnational response to the events of the day and, as such, reflected wider French sympathy for the aims and requests of Polish citizens, as seen by a French photographer. Moreover, Barbey attempted to introduce Polish history in general, and Poland's burdened relationship to the Soviet Union in particular, in order to suggest that it belonged to the history of Western democratic states across the Iron Curtain.  Published on 2017-09-24 00:00:00
  • Introduction to the special issue on Art and Politics

    • Abstract: Art and politics are entwined in complex ways. Artworks gain political significance in dynamic networks and social processes that include the artists, the commissioners, their audiences and, not to forget, the historians who study them. This article traces some of the aspects that have defined the relationship between art and politics in Europe since the Enlightenment.   Published on 2017-07-12 12:33:54
  • Reading Landscape in Beyoglu and Tarlabasi: Engineering a ‘Brand New’
           Cosmopolitan Space, 1980-2013

    • Abstract: This article discusses the intricate relationship between cultural identity formation and the urban landscape using an example of urban modernization in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district. The area under scrutiny is called Tarlabaşı and is currently the site where the state is executing a judicially contested state-led gentrification project. The project is based in an area which housed an ethnically and religiously heterogeneous composition of middle- and working-class groups until the 1960s, became dilapidated from the 1970s onwards and was stigmatized by the Turkish government at local, metropolitan and national levels. It was portrayed by the media as an area of social and cultural deprivation, allegedly home only to the most marginal members of society. This article will discuss the relevance of landscape as a useful category in historical research. Secondly, it will discuss how and why dominant representations of Beyoğlu’s urban landscape have developed and been instrumentalized in modern Istanbul from the 1980s onwards. Finally, this article shows how successive attempts of socio-cultural engineering by local governments, in order to reform or ‘modernize’ the urban landscape, had a strong impact on the physical and imaginary landscape of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşı. It will be argued that local Istanbul and Beyoğlu governments, inspired by neoliberal ideas of urban planning and city marketing, have attempted to reshape the cultural identity of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşı in order to legitimize drastic interventions in the area’s urban landscape and socio-cultural composition.  Published on 2017-04-05 07:28:52
  • What is Counter-Enlightenment'

    • Abstract: This article counters recent suggestions that there was no such thing as a “Counter-Enlightenment” or “Counter-Enlightenments,” and that such terms ought thus to be abandoned.   While acknowledging inevitable difficulties with the terms, the article argues that there can be no doubting the reality.   European countries faced a variety of vehement and self-conscious movements that defined themselves precisely through their opposition to what they took to be the corrosive effects of the Enlightenment.  In the process, they defined the main terms of an enduring vision of the world that we now associate with the Right. • European Capitals of Culture: A “soft power” resource for the
           European Union'

    • Abstract: Using English-language newspaper articles retrieved from digital repositories, this paper examines the cultural asymmetrical encounter between Western and Eastern Europe after 1989. It argues that due to the rise of the Iron Curtain after 1948 and the post-war progress of the Western European integration project after 1950, the idea of “Europe” was confined to the West until 1989. After 1989, however, the Eastern European nations were free to “return to Europe”, and in order to do so they followed the “reference model” of the West. The paper takes the institution of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) as a case study and demonstrates how both Western and Eastern European cities used the ECOC title as a gateway to modernity, why it acquired an extra functionality in the East as a stage where they could showcase their “European” credentials, and how it gradually developed into one of the E.U.’s “soft power” resources.
