  • Fascism Comes to America

    • Abstract: For almost a century, American politicians and social commentator, trailed by novelists, Hollywood movie makers and television producers have agonized about the menace of fascism, and its ability to corrupt the United States’ constitutional republic, supposedly moderate, strong, and firm. Four facets of this huge set of issues are called to the attention of readers: the creation of the understanding of fascism in 1939–1941; the connection between political crises and their renderings in popular culture; the contribution of European scholars to the conventional conceptual framework; and an exploration of the penchant of American scholars for the notion. • Fleshy stories. New Materialism and Female Suicides in Late
           Nineteenth-Century Finland

    • Abstract: In the nineteenth-century western medicine suicide was a gendered phenomenon. Female suicides were linked to emotion, whereas the male ones were seen as social acts, reflecting the state of the national economy and social wellbeing. Concentrating on late nineteenth-century Finnish female suicides, this article offers a new perspective on the medical history of suicides: firstly, it utilizes an underused source type, the post-mortems of suicides, and, secondly, it develops a methodology inspired by Karen Barad’s agential realism. While recognizing the gendered and cultural dimensions of suicide, I argue that female suicides included factors even beyond the human. Hence, the article suggests that suicide was neither a human nor a discursive phenomenon but an entanglement of multiple agencies, including human and nonhuman, matter and discourse.   Published on 2018-11-08 11:22:03
  • The Material Culture of Parliament. A case study of the Dutch Second
           Chamber, 1945–2000

    • Abstract: If parliament is anything, it is an institution where speech acts define politics. It should therefore come as no surprise that political historians have devoted most of their attention to parliamentary debate and decision-making, whereas the materiality of parliamentary debate has only recently entered their purview. Building on these recent approaches, this article offers an analysis of the material culture of the Dutch parliament in the post-war years. Three angles of materiality are explored: the building in which the Second Chamber houses; the objects present in plenary hall; and finally, the objects used as ‘props’ in parliamentary performances. Through the use of the notion of ‘performances’ or ‘practices’ of speaking, debating and acting in parliament, the aim is to acquire a better grasp of how these ‘things’ have impinged on political communication. • Continuing Politics by Other Means: Giving in Cold War Europe

    • Abstract: This article unearths the little-known history of charitable giving in Cold War Europe. The first case explores supply conduits forged in the German Romanian community of West Germany and Romania. Starting in the late 1960s, Western community members became involved in supporting those left behind in Romania through care packages and tourist visits. As the political leadership under Nicolae Ceaușescu adopted drastic austerity measures in the early 1980s, the second case shows how East German volunteer groups organized aid to Romania from within the socialist bloc. The discussion concludes that the provisioning relationships uncovered in both examples integrated the world of materials into daily aspirations of ‘governing precarious lives’ to a new repertoire for public action that did not remain external to politics but rather reformulated what was at stake in politics through immediate, direct acts of assistance. • The Material Culture of Human Rights. Consumer Products, Boycotts and the
Transformation of Human Rights Activism in the 1970s and 1980s

    • Abstract: During the 1960s and 1970s, human rights NGOs began to use boycotts and other consumer protests to draw attention to their campaigns. The Anti-Apartheid Movement in particular, used consumer products and spaces of consumption for their campaigns against the South African regime. By focussing on the everyday practice of consumption, these campaigns helped to translate human rights discourse from the sphere of international law and politics into the sphere of civil society and everyday life. The entanglement of human rights activism and consumer culture can thus be seen as an important – but so far mostly overlooked – aspect of the so-called “breakthrough” of human rights discourse in the 1970s. The article looks at this development from a material culture studies approach. It argues that everyday objects played an important role in human rights campaigns, particularly in the context of a mediatization and popularization of human rights in the 1970s and 1980s. The article takes the Anti-Apartheid Movement as a case study. By looking at the boycott campaigns as well as the consumer items the movement began to produce itself in the late 1980s, it shows how material objects and social practices became inextricably intertwined in these campaigns. • A ‘Call to Tools’: DIY between State Building and Consumption
           Practices in the GDR

    • Abstract: This article discusses state attempts to politicize do-it-yourself activities in order to strengthen the regime of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) in East Germany. To be sure, for many East Germans DIY practices were a hobby and a pastime. Given the notorious shortage of consumer goods and the slow progress in improving standards of living in the GDR, however, it was also a strategy to overcome the shortcomings of the socialist society. The SED attempted to make a virtue out of this necessity by re-interpreting DIY practices as a personal contribution to the building up of the GDR and socialist society. Performed in the right way, practices of DIY were supposed to contribute to both the material and the ideological consolidation of the GDR. In order to direct DIY activities towards undertakings defined as most important by state and party officials, the regime developed particular organizational structures. The annual competition “Join in!”, on which this article focuses, addressed the housing situation and therefore one of the most pressing problems of the GDR. Calling upon the East German population to devote their leisure time to the creation of housing spaces, the renovation of state-owned apartment blocks, and the erection and preservation of parks and playgrounds, however, caused new problems. While the East German state tried to generate pride in communal facilities and in public goods rather than in private possessions, this ideal competed with practices of DIY where citizens used their handiwork to improve their private standard of life.  Published on 2018-07-19 00:00:00
  • International Photography Networks and Walter Hahn’s Museum for
           Photography, Dresden

    • Abstract: The Museum für Photographie, founded, developed and directed by Dr. Walter Hahn for only twelve years in the city of Dresden, has only recently emerged in scholarship on East German Photographic culture. Although the museum definitely enjoyed a relationship to the East German cultural authorities within the Cultural League, or Kulturbund, it does not sit easily in the historiographical category of ‘official’ photography in the GDR. Hahn’s version of the history of photography was challenging to the socialist establishment, which hampered the further development of the museum and did not preserve the project after Hahn’s death. Hahn’s ambitions to expand his museum and gain membership in an international community of collectors and museum professionals drove him to contact a tremendous number of figures throughout the world and led to much fruitful exchange on questions of the history of photography and the state of collections internationally. This article will address the degree to which Hahn’s networking through publications and correspondence and attempts at cultural diplomacy tied him more closely to the international community of photography collectors and photography museums – particularly in the West – than his Cultural League colleagues could ultimately sanction. It argues that Hahn and his museum represent a historical and historiographical anomaly that complicates the accepted narratives of East Germany history. Hahn’s interactions within the international museum community represent a significant instance of the international circuit of photographic images and literature during the Cold War.
