  • Introduction to the special issue on Art and Politics

    • Abstract: Art and politics are entwined in complex ways. Artworks gain political significance in dynamic networks and social processes that include the artists, the commissioners, their audiences and, not to forget, the historians who study them. This article traces some of the aspects that have defined the relationship between art and politics in Europe since the Enlightenment.   Published on 2017-07-12 12:33:54

  • Reading Landscape in Beyoglu and Tarlabasi: Engineering a ‘Brand New’
           Cosmopolitan Space, 1980-2013

    • Abstract: This article discusses the intricate relationship between cultural identity formation and the urban landscape using an example of urban modernization in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district. The area under scrutiny is called Tarlabaşı and is currently the site where the state is executing a judicially contested state-led gentrification project. The project is based in an area which housed an ethnically and religiously heterogeneous composition of middle- and working-class groups until the 1960s, became dilapidated from the 1970s onwards and was stigmatized by the Turkish government at local, metropolitan and national levels. It was portrayed by the media as an area of social and cultural deprivation, allegedly home only to the most marginal members of society. This article will discuss the relevance of landscape as a useful category in historical research. Secondly, it will discuss how and why dominant representations of Beyoğlu’s urban landscape have developed and been instrumentalized in modern Istanbul from the 1980s onwards. Finally, this article shows how successive attempts of socio-cultural engineering by local governments, in order to reform or ‘modernize’ the urban landscape, had a strong impact on the physical and imaginary landscape of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşı. It will be argued that local Istanbul and Beyoğlu governments, inspired by neoliberal ideas of urban planning and city marketing, have attempted to reshape the cultural identity of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşı in order to legitimize drastic interventions in the area’s urban landscape and socio-cultural composition.  Published on 2017-04-05 07:28:52

  • What is Counter-Enlightenment'

    • Abstract: This article counters recent suggestions that there was no such thing as a “Counter-Enlightenment” or “Counter-Enlightenments,” and that such terms ought thus to be abandoned.   While acknowledging inevitable difficulties with the terms, the article argues that there can be no doubting the reality.   European countries faced a variety of vehement and self-conscious movements that defined themselves precisely through their opposition to what they took to be the corrosive effects of the Enlightenment.  In the process, they defined the main terms of an enduring vision of the world that we now associate with the Right. • European Capitals of Culture: A “soft power” resource for the
           European Union'

    • Abstract: Using English-language newspaper articles retrieved from digital repositories, this paper examines the cultural asymmetrical encounter between Western and Eastern Europe after 1989. It argues that due to the rise of the Iron Curtain after 1948 and the post-war progress of the Western European integration project after 1950, the idea of “Europe” was confined to the West until 1989. After 1989, however, the Eastern European nations were free to “return to Europe”, and in order to do so they followed the “reference model” of the West. The paper takes the institution of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) as a case study and demonstrates how both Western and Eastern European cities used the ECOC title as a gateway to modernity, why it acquired an extra functionality in the East as a stage where they could showcase their “European” credentials, and how it gradually developed into one of the E.U.’s “soft power” resources.

  • L’Art pour l’Art or L’Art pour Tous' The Tension between
Artistic Autonomy and Social Engagement in Les Temps Nouveaux, 1896-1903

    • Abstract: Between 1896 and 1903, Jean Grave, editor of the anarchist journal Les
Temps Nouveaux, published an artistic album of original prints, with
the collaboration of (avant-garde) artists and illustrators. While anarchist
theorists, including Grave, summoned artists to create social art,
which had to be didactic and accessible to the working classes, artists
wished to emphasize their autonomous position instead. Even though
Grave requested ‘absolutely artistic’ prints in the case of this album,
artists had difficulties with creating something for him, trying to combine
their social engagement with their artistic autonomy. The artistic
album appears to have become a compromise of the debate between the
anarchist theorists and artists with anarchist sympathies. Published on 2016-12-31 09:43:40

  • The Reception of British Painting at the Venice Biennali, 1895-1914:
           Politics or Aesthetics

    • Abstract: The opening of the Venice Biennale in 1895 provided an unprecedented occasion to bring international art to the Italian public. It thus enabled intellectuals, art critics and the wider population to see and judge national productions side by side. This paper proposes to look at the way biases developed along with the Biennale and the peculiar political situation in Europe. By looking at articles written by leading Italian art critics on newspapers and magazines such as Emporium, Fanfulla della Domenica, Il Marzocco or Illustrazione italiana, the paper will show that art often served as a pretext for a deeper reading into political interplays and ultimately pointed to the rising conflict between the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. • Artistic Alliances and Revolutionary Rivalries in the Baltic Art World,
           1890-1914

    • Abstract: In the areas now known as Estonia and Latvia, art remained a matter for the Baltic German minority throughout the nineteenth century. When ethnic Estonian and Latvian artists gained prominence in the late 1890s, their presence threatened Baltic German hegemony over the region’s culture. In 1905, revolution in the Russian Empire spilled into the Baltic Provinces, sparking widespread anti-German violence. The revolution also galvanized Latvian and Estonian artists towards greater cultural autonomy and independence from Baltic German artistic institutions. This paper argues that the situation for artists before and after the 1905 revolution was not simply divisive along ethnic lines, as some nationalist historians have suggested. Instead, this paper examines how Baltic German, Estonian and Latvian artists oscillated between common interests, inspiring rivalries, and politicized conflicts, questioning the legitimacy of art as a universalizing language in multicultural societies. • Transculturalism and Translation: New approaches to cultural contact zones

    • Abstract: Transculturalism is an approach to studying cultures that pays particular attention to how cultures interact. Because it aspires to be a new way of studying cultural intermingling, transculturalism is still searching for concepts and vocabulary to define a unique approach to history. In their advice for aspiring transculturalists, the three books examined here stress the usefulness of the metaphor of translation for viewing how cultures interact. A product of and a response to increased interest in the global, the empirical case studies in these books open a new view of the construction of global imaginaries and how we might more usefully study them, but seem to add little to existing approaches to inter-cultural interaction. • Comparing Perspectives: Writing about Communist Architecture and Urbanism
           at the Seaside

    • Abstract: The review compares two recent books: Holidays after the Fall. Seaside Architecture and Urbanism in Bulgaria and Croatia (edited by Elke Beyer, Anke Hagemann and Michael Zinganel, Berlin, 2013) and Enchanting Views. Romanian Black Sea Tourism Planning and Architecture of the 1960s and 70s (edited by Kalliopi Dimou, Sorin Istudor and Alina Serban, Bucharest, 2015). They are the first comprehensive publications that focus on seaside tourism architecture and urbanism in the former communist world, in the three countries where these have been most substantially developed at the time. The two books are also part of a tendency in recent literature on the communist period, to see the brighter side of a built environment that is still generally considered to be grey and dull. The review compares the two editorial strategies and stresses their differences: Holidays after the Fall addresses both the communist and the post-communist periods, including the ‘architectural monstrosities’ of the recent liberal developments; Enchanting Views focuses strictly on the 1960s and the 1970s, with their unspoiled image of a clean and pure modernist seaside environment. Holidays after the Fall focuses more on researching and revealing objects of architecture and urbanism, while Enchanting Views looks to display as many different disciplinary perspectives and interpretations as possible. The review highlights their similarities too: both books develop comparative approaches, showing that modernist seaside developments in the communist Europe were closely similar to their Western counterparts and that seaside resorts have played a major role as instruments of lifestyle change and modernization.  Published on 2016-10-09 00:00:00

  • (Non-)Monumental Layers of Berlin

    • Abstract: The two books reviewed in this article, Hsiu-Ling Kuos’s Monumentality and Modernity in Hitler’s Berlin (2013) and Janet Ward’s Post-Wall Berlin (2011), focus on the structural, political, social and aesthetic transformation of Berlin, from the first half of the twentieth century to the ‘post-wall’ era. Since both authors strongly emphasize the former and present status of monumental architecture and monumental memory, this book review pays particular attention to a critical discussion of the (non-)monumental layers of Berlin.
