  • Using Culture to Enhance Ambience: Artistic Inspiration from Leather

    • Authors: Benta Oguda
Abstract: The choice of a theme and concept in any design work is fundamental to driving the success of a project. In this paper, the author draws attention to the use of material culture of the Maasai, Swahili and the Luo of Kenya as sources of inspiration for deriving designs to be applied on leather. The culturally inspired leather crafts have enabled the promotion of the Kenyan identity and the richness of Kenya’s artifacts. Grounded on the results of a study, and with a focus on the various techniques of leather decoration employed independently or in combination, the paper exploits the use of leather by the three cultures upon which the execution of the project was done. In the study, the author adopted use of other materials alongside leather to enhance its aesthetic value as a piece of art work or as a decorative upholster. The study being experimental in nature, data was mainly collected via various observations made in curio shops, guest houses and markets dealing with leather crafts in the industry. To demonstrate that material culture of the Luo, Swahili and Maasai (and by extension those of other ethnic groups in Africa) form an important, rich and largely untapped source of artistic inspiration for leather crafts and other art areas, the author displays photographic data indicating the culture in which each artistic work is embraced.

    • Authors: Ni Made Ruastiti
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out and understand Pendet Memendak Dance in Kerambitan Village, Tabanan, Bali. This research is carried out dur to the imbalance between assumptions and reality that occurs in the field. Advanced and modern societies usually prefer dances which are beautiful and presented in a modern way. However, the reality shows a different thing. Although Pendet Memendak Dance is very simple and traditional, the people in Kerambitan Village stil preserve it. This fact raises two questions: (1) How is the form of the Pendet Memendak Dance' (2) What is the function of this dance for the local community'This study utilizes a qualitative method. The data sources of this research are Pendet Memendak Dance, related informants, and the results of the previous research. All data collected by observation, interview, and library study techniques are analyzed using aesthetic theory, religious theory, symbol theory, and structural functional theory. The results of the study showed that: (1) Pendet Mendendak Dance in Banjar Tengah, Kerambitan, Tabanan is performed in the form of a free dance (without any play or characters). It can be seen from the way of performing, choreography, makeup and clothing, and the music; (2) Pendet Memendak Dance is still preserved by the people in Kerambitan Village because it has a function as a means of ceremonies, a binder of social solidarity, and one of efforts to preserve the art and culture of the community in the village.

  • Effectiveness of School Boards in Managing Financial and Human Resources
in Public Primary Schools in Nyeri County, Kenya.

    • Authors: Catherine Mumbi Baaru
Abstract: Although Boards of Management (BOMs) have been mandated to oversee the running of public primary schools in Kenya, little has been documented as far as their effectiveness is concerned. This study sought to assess the effectiveness of School Boards in managing financial and human resources in public primary schools in Nyeri County, Kenya. The study was guided by Mintzberg Management Theory. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Twenty-one head teachers and 196 BOM members drawn from 21 public primary schools in Nyeri County participated in the study. Data was collected using questionnaires for headteachers and members of BOMs. The study established that BOM members with background in financial management were more effective in overseeing the financial management of public primary schools. The study also established that BOMs oversaw the recruitment and allocation of duties to teaching staff and also took an active part in the recruitment and drafting of terms of service for the support staff. The study further established that BOMs were effective in the management of human resource in the schools. It was concluded that BOMs were effective in the management of public primary schools in the study area though they faced numerous challenges. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education should train BOM members on financial management skills since their work involved overseeing budgeting, procurement and payment of school expenditures.

  • External Legal Protection for Capital Investors from Political Risk

    • Authors: Fitria Dewi Navisa, Suhariningsih -, Bambang Winarno, Siti Hamidah
Abstract: Constitution suggests that economic development in Indonesia must involve participation of the society, as reflected by Article 33 Paragraph (4) of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia after amendment. The definition of togetherness as mentioned in Article 33 Paragraph (4) should be viewed from wider perspective. It is essential that people be aware that fund and capacity of the government are still an issue when it is linked to the economic development, given that the development is a complex matter. Therefore, the participation from the society is necessary to help achieve the success in national development. Investment can be considered to support the development, either it is domestic investment or foreign investment. In terms of risk transfer, it surely involves some liabilities embedded to parties transferring the risk based on the agreement to which the transfer is bound. The agreement aimed to regulate the risk transfer is known as insurance agreement. Therefore, it is essential for investors investing their capital to get external protection. The legal theories consisting of legal protection, legal certainty, investment, and insurance were used in this research, while the method was based on normative juridical, supported by statute, conceptual, case, and comparative approaches. The obtained data was analysed with descriptive method where the related phenomena were studied to vividly discover existing condition. The measures taken to assure that the regulations and laws regarding investment and investors, including small and medium enterprises, must be clearly implemented and enforced, transparent, easily accessed and must not give incremental burden. The government needs to consider uncertain policy including predictability and transparency matter, both of which are still taken as the biggest impeding factors in investment. Perspective of investors must also be given to make and revise policy. It is essential that investors understand practical implication of the regulation that regulates the investment regarding what needs to be met and the procedures required in public review and process of appeal in case of disputes.

           Students' An Explanatory Study

    • Authors: Shallu Sansanwal
Abstract: This is a mixed method study focusing on finding the relationship between the instructor support and task orientation of higher degree programme students. What is happening in the class (WIHIC) scale was used to get the quantitative data from 119 participants from Masters Methodology Coursework of MED 872. The research questions were focused on finding the relation between the Instructor Support and Task Orientation in the students. Qualitative phase of the study answered the research question that how questions by instructor helped students in better guidance in task. The results showed that Instructor Support and Task orientation are correlated significantly (t=0.23* at p ≤ 0.05 levels) and questioning in turn is an important aspect of task orientation as it increases understanding and critical thinking of students.

  • Exploring the effect of school management functions on students’

Abstract: In every aspect of life, management has become a crosscutting tool and the axis of performance. There is a broad and ongoing discussion in our academic institutions about the impact of effective management on academic performance. This study therefore sought to analyze the effects school management functions on the likelihood to enhance academic performance of students in Public SHSs in Ghana. The study used Teacher Professional Development, monitoring and evaluation, Provision of Infrastructure outcomes, Teachers Input, Student Input, P.T.A support and Parental Involvement as variables measuring school management functions. In this study, descriptive research design was adopted and data of 480 respondents were collected through questionnaire survey for analysis. With the application of logistic regression analysis as the main statistical tool, the study based on Wald test values, p-values and odds ratio values identified Teacher professional development, Monitory and evaluation, Provision of infrastructure, Teachers input, Students effort, PTA support, and Parental involvement as school management functions that significantly contributes to the likelihood (probability) of enhancing students’ academic performance. The study recommended that school management functions with the exception of democratic management should be intensified in various public SHSs so as to enhance students’ academic performance.

  • Chaplaincy Services and Students’ Holistic Development in Anglican
Church of Kenya Sponsored Secondary Schools in Mount Kenya Central
           Diocese, Kenya

    • Authors: Mary Waithira Wambugu
      Pages: 01 - 10
Abstract: The focus of educational institutions in Kenya has been largely directed towards academic achievement with little attention being given to provision of chaplaincy services which provide a critical pathway to students’ holistic development. This study assessed the influence of chaplaincy services on students’ holistic development in Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) sponsored secondary schools in Mount Kenya Central Diocese, Kenya. The study involved 36 principals, 36 chaplains and 360 students selected from 36 out of the 89 secondary schools sponsored by ACK Mount Kenya Central Diocese. Data was collected through three validated questionnaires for the principals, chaplains and students. The findings of this study revealed that majority of the principals, chaplains and students indicated that chaplaincy services promoted students’ academic performance, discipline and attitude towards life which are critical components of holistic development. The study recommends that the Ministry of Education should institutionalize and support chaplaincy services in secondary schools as an alternative pathway for addressing indiscipline issues in Kenyan secondary schools.

  • Sociocultural and Economic Conditions as Causes of The Weakened Social
           Cohesion in Landless Peasants

    • Authors: Dumasari Dumasari
      First page: 11
Abstract: Conversion of agricultural land to non-agriculture is one of the main reasons that causes peasants to lose productive jobs and create poverty. However, the flow of land conversion turned out to be difficult to control, so the number of peasants continued to decrease over time. The location of this study was set intentionally in the villages of Purbalingga Wetan Subdistrict, Purbalingga Regency and Baturaden, Banyumas Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The research method is an intrinsic case study. The results of the study show that the weakening of social cohesion in peasant begins with the process of fragmentation. Social cohesion weakens at the level of individuals, communities and institutions. The sociocultural conditions that underlie the weakening of landless peasants' social cohesion are weak motivation, waning work values and norms, self perception as individuals who are a little strong, depleted collectivity, stretching social interaction, weak trust, micro motivated cooperation network, sense of belonging , self-exploitation and risk aversion. The underlying economic conditions include economic urgency, commercial labor relations, wage systems, subsistence economic morals, global market penetration and rising costs of living needs. Weak social cohesion facilitates peasant participation in various participatory empowerment programs. Therefore, strengthening social cohesion in community peasants is urgent and important in order to build solidarity and generate ownership empowerment programs.

  • Rapports entre les composantes de l’énoncé publicitaire

    • Authors: Maître de conférences Costin POPESCU
      First page: 19
