  • Approaching Reading Development through Children’s Literature: Insights
from A Case Study of the University Student with Low English Proficiency

    • Authors: Cheng-Fang Huang
Abstract: This paper reports a case study exploring the feasibility of using children’s literature for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) reading development. In the test-oriented educational environment, Taiwanese students tend to perceive reading as a task to pass tests. This study attempts to propose another path to facilitate the reading development, especially for those who are less proficient in English. Focusing on one university EFL learner with low English proficiency, the report provides in-depth description of her reading obstacles and progress while engaging in reading English children’s literature. Findings of the reading sessions showed that the learner (1) improved the oral reading fluency, (2) acquired better awareness of pronunciation rules, and (3) developed better reading comprehension. The result of this case study suggests a supplementary path for the EFL reading development of similar learners: free voluntary reading of children’s literature complemented with proper scaffolding and corresponding instruction tailored to individual learner’s needs.

  • Culture in Teaching EFL in Saudi Arabia from Learners’ Perspective

    • Authors: Nasir Uddin
      Pages: 08 - 17
Abstract: This paper aims to study the attitude of Saudi Arabian undergraduate English students towards the American and British culture by studying their attitude to materials with relevant cultural contents in their textbooks. Primary data shows that the learners are more tolerant in their attitude to the English culture than they socially appear to be, but they are keen to learn English as a language with relatively less interest in its cultural aspects.

  • Double Life. Music as Work and Serious Leisure

    • Authors: Tuire Kuusi, Pertti Haukola
      Pages: 18 - 32
Abstract: Serious leisure (SL) is defined as an intensive, long-term free-time activity which has deep meaning for an individual and generates its own rewards without external incentives. Our research addresses the mutual effects of an individual’s work and SL, with a particular focus on music. We analyse our findings in relation to psychological recovery experiences (psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery and control), using the concepts of segmentation, spillover and compensation. The data consist of nine interviews. Four of the participants were professional musicians with various SLs (acting, woodwork, handicrafts, and urban culture). The other five (an architect, a librarian, two directors, and a project manager), conversely, had music as their SL.Qualitative content analysis of the data revealed comments about the topic that could be classified into three thematic clusters with further subdivisions into themes and categories: 1) Participants’ manner of talking about SL, 2) Aspects of SL, and 3) SL and work.  Our data did not show any difference between comments from the two participant groups, whether SL was music or something else. Instead, SL overall had positive effects on subjective well-being, notions of identity, and working abilities regardless of the content. SL stimulated psychological recovery and gave meaning and content to the participants’ lives. Although SL and work were segmented in the everyday lives of our participants, the effects were strongly integrated. Given these findings, we believe that in today’s busy work life, employers would do well to take advantage of SL and its positive effects.

  • The Spiritual Form of Ancient Art and Culture - Bharatanatyam (Visual Art)
Depicted Using Unique Techniques on Scratchboard (Fine Art) Medium

    • Authors: Arpitha Parthasarathy
      First page: 33
Abstract: The most ancient form of dance that is prevailing todays is a form of classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam. In Sanskrit, bharatanatyam means "Indian dance", is believed to have divine origin and is of the most ancient form of classical dance. The art today remains purely devotional even today and this performing art is yet to gain awareness and interest in the western world. Scratchboard, a fine art is one means by which the visual art is expressed in this current study using sharp tools. This unique medium has been used to not only show the details of the ancient dance form and expression but also to comprehend and transcribe both visual art and fine art. It is for the first time that scratchboard medium has been the innovatively used to show various textures of flower, glistening gold jewels, hand woven silk and the divine expression in the same art ‘devotion’.

           IN NIGERIA

    • Authors: Babatunde Femi Akinyode, Emilia Oluwafolakemi Martins
      First page: 38
Abstract: The importance of housing has made it received much attention worldwide among scholars and policy makers as a potential tool for man’s productivity. However, little is known about the poverty implications on the living and housing condition among Nigerian residents. This study aims at examining the effects of poverty among urban residents on their living and housing conditions in Nigeria. Questionnaires administration was made among 400 residents to assess residential attributes. Qualitatively supported with the aid of personal interview, observation and photographs. Correlation analysis was drawn between the residents’ socio-economic status and housing condition. Results through descriptive analysis established that majority of the housing exhibit deterioration condition. This resulted from the socio-economic situation and high poverty level of the residents. The result also showed robust and positive relationship between residents socio-economic and urban housing condition. This positive relationship demonstrates support for the negative impacts on the welfare of the residents. Urban housing attributes are of importance for residents’ safety, comfort and convenience to enhance productivity. In view of this, the authors are of opinion that, urgent attention is highly necessary if the residents are to live in an environment that is safe, convenience and comfortable in order to enhance their productivity.

  • An Introduction to Concept and Evolution of the Guardstone and Its
Architectural Visualization of the Contemporary Religious and Cultural

    • Authors: Sasni Amarasekara
      Pages: 52 - 58
Abstract: This specific study deals with a unique piece of Buddhist architecture, the Guardstone found almost in every part of ancient kingdoms in Sri Lanka spanning from Anuradhapura to Kandy period significantly. The Guardstone is an excellent piece of structure placed on either side of the first step of the flight of stairs at the entrance of ancient religious buildings or palaces in Sri Lanka. The origin of this architectural masterpiece is still to determine. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted in an evolutionary point of view that the guardstone has passed through several developmental stages from a simple slab to a highly sophisticated artifact in its dimensions, complexity and artistry. The numerous inclusions as well as exclusions from time to time to this artifact still remain uncertain as to whether they were due to secular or ecclesiastical reasons or simply due to the creators own culture influenced imagination. This study will peruse all the possible evidence that are available architecturally and to develop a logical reasoning for any identifiable characteristic and to elucidate with reasonable legitimacy as to how and why such a character is present or absent in a particular guardstone. This study in no way has any intention of rejecting or amending any proposition available at present but will pursue its best to shed light only on the attributes of a guardstone and to concentrate on the diversities of this beautiful monastic artifact that deserves serious academic study and meticulous aesthetic evaluation.
