  • Seepage Diglossia Pakpak Dairi Language: Sociolinguistics Study

    • Authors: Ida - Basaria
      Pages: 01 - 07
Abstract: Diglossia is essentially a term used to describe a state of the people who know and use two or more languages to communicate among its members (a society that recognized two or more languages for intrasocietal communication). So the use of bilingual diglossia situation or more in the same community 'governed' by a policy for the selection of the language to be use. Event diglossia shows the distribution function of two or more languages are also giving the impression of their kind of language that is "high" and the type of language that is "low", This type of language used is high in situations that are considered more formal, by people including educated, and more prestige value and prestige. While the types of lower language used in situations that are more informal, by the common man and as a means of general intercommunication. In fact, diglossia situation is actually happening in Indonesia; Functions performed by Indonesian high and low functions carried out by the regional languages in Indonesia. National language as a second language that calls for all levels of society to use it, could result in local languages as a first language gradually eroded. If it is forced through, then the language area that is less powerful because it’s a little bit unknown can disappear even more in the future. This is certainly very unfortunate, because it coincides with the loss of local languages, indigenous or traditional knowledge stored in the oral tradition also can not be saved. It was when seen from the side of the opposition; Different when seen from the side of the union, then between the local language and national languages can co-exist in harmony. This study wanted to examine the analytic theory of how language Pakpak Dairi sociolinguistic as local and Indonesian language as the national language used by speakers in North Sumatra that suffered disproportionately situation.

  • Gender Trouble and the Tragic Black Woman Hybrids in Clotel, Quicksand and
           Passing

    • Authors: Hayder Naji Shanbooj Alolaiwi
      First page: 08
Abstract: The African-American female character's description in Clotel, Quicksand and Passing are very impressive, among whom Clotel, Clare and Irene are depicted as one of the most important “passing” figures for the whole story. Though sharing some similarities with the traditional Black women in the past African-American novels, Clotel, Clare and Irene are very different. The strong connection with as well as variations than the usual gender pattern are mixed within these women. It is only by this new approach that the reader can re-think Black woman and build a new African-American female identity. Taking into the consideration an ecofeminist point of view, this paper is going to study the points of similarities with and differences from the traditional Black Women in the novel, unwrap on the developing subject identity of Black women in this novel, in order to prove that in this novel female subject identity is more than a true representation of essentialism and dualism, in a special and unique realistic perspective.

  • An Analysis of the Needs of Korean EFL Learners in the Collegiate Level

    • Authors: Young-Suk Lee, Pamela Villacorta
      Pages: 15 - 24
Abstract: This study aims to identify the learning needs and preferences of Korean EFL learners in the collegiate level studying at a university in Korea. The result of this study indicates that the respondents feel, among the four macro skills of English, speaking and writing are as equally difficult skills to master. These were followed by reading and listening, respectively. Also as the goal of English learning, the respondents answered getting a high score in such tests as TOEIC and TOEFL. As the effective strategies to learn English, the respondents consider immediate correction of mistakes in speaking and writing and using English as a method of instruction to be effective learning methods. On the other hand, the usage of the Korean language to teach English and the intensive grammar classes are considered as unhelpful in English learning.

  • The Distinction of Ornament and Decoration in Architecture

    • Authors: Fatemeh Ahani, Iraj Etessam, Seyed Gholamreza Islami
      Pages: 25 - 34
Abstract: Ornament has been present throughout the recorded history, revealing human's aspirations, reflections and imaginations. Correspondingly, the discussion of ornament has almost uninterruptedly been a major topic for architectural discourses; one which has led to the publication of several significant texts in which ornamental practices has been addressed from a variety of perspectives. An investigation into the key architectural texts however, reveals that the absence of a certain definition of ornament and its functions in architecture as well as the interchangeable use of the terms 'decoration' and ornament as synonyms, have always been a serious obstacle to reach a clear conception of ornament nature . In this regard, the present paper attempted to distinguish between 'ornament' and 'decoration' based on a comparative analysis of the scholars’ accounts and the way the terms were employed in the architectural texts. Results indicated that the aforementioned concepts can be distinguished by means of seven criteria including components, connection, reference source, role, field of application and reference mode. According to the most referred criteria, ornament is an essential part of architecture which creates a firm bonding with its carrier and often fulfills functions more than aesthetic one .It is mostly made up of transformed motifs and evokes natural forces that originate deeply beyond or within the body of building. Decoration on the other hand, is a pleasing arrangement of real things; a suggestion of the decorous which does not have a permanent connection with its carrier. It is also purely representational, due to its reference to external matters such as mythology, religion, history, or cultural practice.

  • The Challenges of refugees protection

    • Authors: maysa said bydoon
      First page: 35
Abstract: The current crises and civil war in many countries, increasingly challenges and rising rapidly of growing influx of refugees. More recently, as a matter of fact, the asylum issue is one of the most important issues in the international community that shed lights on   a violation of refugees’ rights and most importantly a safe area to live in. The article examines the refugee protection in light of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees 1951 and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees.   It is true that  such convention and its complementary protocol  contribute  in  establishing  The international law of refugee protection, however, its argues that  the convention does not cover all people into danger  in terms of refuges definition and principals of non refoulement .

  • PHENOMENON OF WOMEN MARGINALIZATION IN POOR FAMILY IN PAKPAK COMMUNITY (A
CASE STUDY IN PEGAGAN JULU VILLAGE, SUMBUL SUBDISTRICT, DAIRI REGENCY -
           NORTH SUMATRA - INDONESIA)

    • Authors: Hadriana Marhaeni Munthe
      First page: 38
Abstract: This article is taken from the study of marginalization cases experienced by Pakpak women of rural poor families. The study was conducted in Pegagan village of Sumbul Subdistrict, Dairi, North Sumatra province. The marginalization phenomenon is shown in some aspects; restrictions on women's access to formal education, tendency of dropping out of school, having no inheritance rights and no role in the decision making of custom. Related to this phenomenon, the research question of this study is how the process of marginalization experienced by women in their family is.Marxist structural feminist perspective and qualitative approach with feminist perspective were used to answer the research question. The findings of the study finally show that the structured patriarchy ideology as gender ideology in family becomes the cause of women marginalization. Patriarchy becoming gender ideological construction in Pakpak family is interpreted and expressed in the form of private patriarchy, that is a hegemonizing system or structure of men power that has dominated and subordinated social position of women in Pakpak families.

  • A Mathematical Phenomenon in the Quran of Earth-Shattering Proportions: A
Quranic Theory Based On Gematria Determining Quran Primary Statistics
(Words, Verses, Chapters) and Revealing Its Fascinating Connection with
           the Golden Ratio

    • Authors: Khaled M. S. Al-Faqih
      Pages: 52 - 73
Abstract: As Almighty God has promised to protect the Quran from alteration, corruption or distortion. Historically, the scripture of the Quran has been subjected to various intense mathematically-based studies to reveal the protection mechanisms embedded in the composition of the Quran and to provide evidence of its credibility, authenticity and divinity. Indeed, this study has discovered a mathematical framework in the Quran based on gematria (Abjad numerals) that provides substantial evidence of Quran’s divine authorship and its perfect protection from human tampering. Essentially, this study has proposed a new research direction in numerological studies of the Quran. This study is textually based on the text delivered to Prophet Muhammad and drawn using the primary 28 alphabets of the Arabic language (Uthmanic manuscript), the 112 un-numbered Basmalahs and the names of the Quran chapters. A numerical value (70.44911244) which is referred to in this study as the Quran Constant (QC) was derived to represent the mathematical design of the Quran. The Quran Constant has been found to be fundamental to the current study, whereby the Quran Constant manifests in all derived mathematical equations. The ratio of the total number of chapters in the Quran (114) which represents the physical design of the Quran divided by the Quran Constant (70.44911244) which represents the mathematical design of the Quran gives 1.6181893; it is amazingly almost equal to the golden ratio. This study has also discovered that Almighty God embedded mathematical equations in the composition of the Quran that can easily lead to determination of the Quran’s primary statistics (words, verses and chapters). This study has admirably discovered three elegant mathematical equations that determine the total number of words, verses and chapters with great accuracy. More importantly, letters/word ratio calculated in this study can be practically seen as a validation criterion of both the total number of letters and the total number of words in the Quran. Finally, what does this proof' It proves that the Quran’s miraculous mathematical structure discovered in this study provides unequivocal mathematical proof that the Quran was divinely authored and has been perfectly preserved from the day it was revealed. Indeed, we are witnessing a mathematical phenomenon of earth-shattering proportions~ a miracle beyond earthly justification and human comprehension.

  • University Involvement with Charter Schools: Unique Opportunities for
           Service and Support

    • Authors: Dr. Julie Hentges, Dr. Doug D. Thomas
      Pages: 74 - 83
Abstract: Charter schools are a controversial, but vibrant, component of the current educational landscape, now serving over 3.1 million students in approximately 6900 schools across the United States.  A unique aspect of this movement has been the establishment of alternative authorizers, and specifically universities, to approve and provide oversight to these public schools.  Campus leaders and policy makers must consider numerous variables regarding a university’s involvement with charter schools.  What are the implications of school choice on university policies and practices' Should universities be “authorizers”, granting charters to schools in direct competition with the traditional public school system' Can universities provide the required “oversight” mandated by the charter school laws, as well as providing “support” for the schools' What opportunities for partnerships and practicum experiences exist'  The article provides an overview of issues that arise with public charter schools authorized by universities.  With 18 years of experiences as a public university on the forefront of enabling charter legislation and the “sponsorship” of inner-city public charter schools, the authors provide a historical perspective of the role of universities within the school choice movement, including oversight roles and supportive programs within the unique and growing phenomenon of school choice.

  • Defining Art and its Future

    • Authors: Zachary Isrow
      Pages: 84 - 94
Abstract: Art is a creative phenomenon which changes constantly, not just insofar as it is being created continually, but also in the very meaning of ‘art.’ Finding a suitable definition of art is no easy task and it has been the subject of much inquiry throughout artistic expression. This paper suggests a crucial distinction between ‘art forms’ and ‘forms of art’ is necessary in order to better understand art. The latter of these corresponds to that which we would typically call art such as painting, singing, etc. The former corresponds to the form out of which these take shape, movement, speech, etc. With this distinction set out, it becomes clearer that art and the aesthetic is rooted in the properties of the ‘thing’ such as the color, shape, and the texture, rather than the product of creation itself. Thus, the future of art will bring a new aesthetic in which these properties become recognized as art and as such there will be an aesthetic of everyday life.

  • Commodity: Triggering Uncertainty and Dilemma in Delillo’s White
           Noise

    • Authors: Asif Kamal
      Pages: 95 - 101
Abstract: Postmodern conditions and experiences, specifically, uncertainties and contradictions, multiple interpretations or perspectives, rejection of universal, the loss of individual in the face of plurality, precede some kind of inherent predicament and dilemma as a residue or by-product of the constant commodification of life. Don Delillo’s White Noise, as a product of the postmodern era by a postmodern thinker, incorporates these traits, and predominantly, the underlying dilemma. One of the issues of this research is to trace in this novel these postmodern contradictions and dilemmas, and subsequent bathos of consumer society, under the burden of intensified productivism. This research also aims at scrutinizing these socio-personal postmodern dilemmas in the characters of the novel and ends up analyzing some psychosomatic predicaments in their deeds and thoughts relating to the personal experiences and contexts of the readers of this novel
