Remarks Concerning the Noun ‘Sujet’ in French

    • Authors: Irène Tamba
Abstract: This short commentary seeks to give some further thoughts on the discussion concerning the noun sujet in the French language as taken up in Inter Faculty, vol. 7, Fragmentation and Divergence, by the articles of Berque, Wieviorka, and more especially from a linguistic point of view, that of Lebaud.

  • About Fragmentation and Divergence

    • Authors: Saburo AOKI
Abstract: This introduction to volume 7 of Inter Faculty traces the reasoning and objectives for taking the theme of Fragmentation and Divergence as the focus of discussion. It takes a close look at the discussions proper and their outcome. In considering the issues taken up here, the introduction underscores the complexity of the systems that make up the present globalised world (economical, political, social, cultural) and questions the role of research in human and social sciences, highlighting the importance of articulating the phenomena of mankind and his existence and those of nature.

  • Nature, Culture: Trajecting Beyond Modern Dualism

    • Authors: Augustin BERQUE
Abstract: Modern dualism, opposing the subject to the object, and therefore culture to nature, has made possible modern science and technology, and consequently modern civilization, but it has eventually produced an unsustainable world, which progressively destroys its own basement: the Earth. In order to survive, we have to overcome dualism, but is that rationally possible?Making use of the concepts oftrajection and trajective chains, this paper shows that not only concrete reality is trajective(neither purely objective nor purely subjective), but that modern physics itself has come to this evidence. Accordingly, beyond the abstraction of dualism, we have to conceive of reality anew, including in the field of the natural sciences.

  • Structural Violence and Migration: Explaining Global and Local Total
           Institutions

    • Authors: Aleš BUČAR RUČMAN
Abstract: Decades ago Johan Galtung presented his perspective on violence which includes the distinction between structural, direct and cultural violence. This paper tries to incorporate his approach and present the connection between structural violence and migrations with focus on immigration in the EU. The author argues that the consequence of structural violence is the appearance of two types of excluded spaces: a) global total institutions, which include countries or entire regions of economically less or underdeveloped countries; b) local total institutions within the economically developed countries, which include physical spaces (immigrant neighbourhoods, ghettos, prisons, detention centers for foreigners, etc.) and also social spaces of exclusion in which immigrants are put due to stereotype, prejudice and consequential discrimination.

/ Exiting Violence: A Project for the Humanities and Social Sciences

    • Authors: Michel WIEVIORKA
Abstract: Violence imports on the physical and moral integrity of the individual person, of groups, of whole societies, and sometimes even, beyond. However, exiting violence is not merely a matter of putting an end to violence, it is also one of once again giving meaning to the lives of individuals and collectivities where violence had destroyed or badly altered it. It is finding a means for victims and perpetrators to be able to live together; it is to refuse to become trapped in the terrible events of the past just as it is to refuse to forget or deny them.

/ Reflections on the Lexical Item ‘Sujet’ in Contemporary French

    • Authors: Daniel LEBAUD
Abstract: From a reading of Michel Wieviorka and in particular his use of the termssujet (subject) and individu (individual), and from an analysis of the uses of the lexical unit sujet in contemporary French - in various disciplinary fields as well as in ordinary speech - this paper aims first of all to examine the specific properties of the term sujet in language, and secondly to attempt a general hypothesis on its function. It would appear from this study that sujetand individu have radically different properties which are to be articulated: a subject is an individual qualified in relation to a term or a notion X of which it operates the actualization. Consequently, the category sujet can neither be integrated into the category individu nor be separated from it.

  • Art and Culture: Memories from the Past Royal Monarchy of France

    • Authors: Margareta KASTBERG SJÖBLOM
Abstract: This article focuses on the analysis of textual data and the extraction of lexical semantics. The techniques provided by different lexical statistics tools, such as Hyperbase (Brunet), today open the door to many avenues of research in the field of corpus linguistics, including reconstructing the major semantic themes of a textual corpus in a systematic way, thanks to a computer-assisted semantic extraction. The object used as a testing ground is a corpus made up by a patrimonial corpus which includes the entire repertoire of the first generation of French Opera librettos performed at the Royal Music Academy at the Palais Royal. The aim of the contribution is to show how an artistic genre can be a bearer of a political message and a vehicle for its propaganda.

  • Diffusion of Japanese Sports Anime in France: Assessment and Review of
           Issues

    • Authors: Sébastien LAFFAGE-COSNIER, Rie INABA
Abstract: In the late 1980s and during the 1990s, in France, Japanese sports-themed animated films were very popular among French children, to such an extent that French youth enrolments in certain sports clubs significantly increased. This phenomenon occurred in spite of the substantial differences between Japanese and French sport cultures; for example in Japan, sports are considered as a way of practicing discipline, while in France it is viewed as a recreational activity. This article examines our quantitative analysis of sports-themed animated films produced in Japan and assesses the impact of these animated films broadcast in France. Further, we will evaluate previous works on this topic with the aim of proposing new approaches for future academic projects.

  • What Does It Mean to Replace Ecology with Mesology and Resources with
           Nourishment?

    • Authors: Corine PELLUCHON
Abstract: After having explored what is at stake in Berque’s efforts to overcome the pitfalls of a Western paradigm characterized by dualism between nature and culture and the conception of a substantial and abstract subject, I will show to what extent his notions of mesology and mediance help us think through the ecological crisis which cannot be reduced to issues such as global warming and the depletion of resources, but which concerns our perception of ourselves, our relationships with others and the meaning of our temporary stay on earth. The replacement of ecology by mesology leads to my own approach which is to make interaction with nature and other beings a chapter of a philosophy of existence that takes into account the materiality of our life, that is to say the fact that we live in and depend upon natural and cultural things such as water, food, river, trees, but also landscapes and towns. This phenomenology of nourishment highlights the corporality of the subject and insists upon the dimension of pleasure and enjoyment. The phenomenological description of eating, dwelling, walking, living in a place and being co-resident with other human and non-human existences, breathes new life into the concept of human existence. I shall further outline the political consequences of this phenomenology.

  • Construction of a Creole Identity in Cabo Verde: Insights from
‘Morna’, a Traditional Form of Music

    • Authors: Kay AOKI
Abstract: Morna is a traditional music of Cabo Verde. It was created in the context of colonialism, where Whites, Blacks and creoles, the children of Whites and Blacks born in Cabo Verde, lived. With emancipation from slavery, the people of Cabo Verde began to build their own identity: a creole identity. In order to establish their independence from Portugal, poets and musicians used morna to unify the people of Cabo Verde. This research paper will address the specific case of the evolution of morna by analysing morna lyrics diachronically to clarify the importance of ‘creoleness’ in the creation of a unique Cabo Verde identity.

  • An Approach to a Cultural Constant as Seen in the ‘Tensho’
           Karate Kata

    • Authors: Jérémie BRIDE
Abstract: As cultural heritage from Japan (Okinawa), karate conveys not only body forms (or corporal shapes) of its culture of origin; it also gives insight into deeper cultural concepts. The use of time and space and a particular rhythmicity can be analysed in the practice of karate kata, and particularly in theTensho kata. This analysis is supported here by an anthropo-didactic study that highlights the pervasive cultural dimension of this kata in relation to the practice of other Japanese art forms, and even posits it as an overarching principle of Japanese culture. For this purpose,a parallel between the musicology of traditional Japanese music and the Tenshokarate kata is discussed here.
