  • Editors' Note, Mouseion 14.3
    • Abstract: With this issue, we rename our Varia section, which has for many years now served as a venerable showcase for original compositions in Greek and Latin (including the gratiarum actiones presented at the Classical Association of Canada's annual meetings), as well as a home for items that did not belong categorially among the scholarly articles and reports that fill the majority of our pages. The title under which we re-inaugurate the Varia section, "Echos du Monde Classique/Classical Views," is a nostalgic memento of the name the journal wore (in various combinations) through its first and second series (1956–2000). The change is intended not to supplant the kind of material that previously appeared in the Varia, but ... Read More

• Introduction to "Open Digital Corpora of Greek and Latin"
    • Abstract: Among the subdisciplines of classics, text-based studies might not highlight the transformative effect of computing quite as vividly as does, for example, classical archaeology. While the latter's adoption of computer-aided design software and drones often appears front and centre in academic publication, digital texts tend to lurk in the background of philological papers. Nevertheless, from the founding of the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae in the 1980s until the present, philologists have derived obvious benefits from digitalization: unlimited keyword search and—with the advent of the Internet—ubiquitous availability. Meanwhile, an ever increasing number of scholars endeavour to match the needs of text-based research ... Read More

  • Large-Scale Optical Character Recognition of Ancient Greek
    • Abstract: The large-scale and open digitization of books is transforming the humanities. Projects such as the Internet Archive and Google Books make available the text of millions of volumes, potentially widening the canon,1 and inspiring a variety of rapidly evolving forms of discovery, some, like "n-grams," of broad interest to the public as engagingly described in Aiden and Michel.2 Even a simple Google search on a familiar Latin phrase, such as sunt geminae somni portae,3 summons up a helpful jumble of critical editions, monographs, and articles. More scholarly organization and analysis of these materials can reveal much about the evolution of ancient languages, as shown by Bamman and Crane.4Interestingly, however, the ... Read More

  • Reading Croatian Latin through Lucretius
    • Abstract: Modern Latin philology finds itself in a paradoxical situation. Never before has more Latin been accessible to readers; but in proportion with the amount of accessible text grows the temptation not to read it. One kind of textual avoidance is manifested in the fact that Latin texts are read in translation, so that discussions of them tend to focus on the aspects that are language neutral. Another kind of avoidance is caused precisely by the fact that we are facing millions of words. These millions are well beyond normal human capabilities of synthesis, and we cannot deal with such huge corpora without resorting either to abstractions and generalizations, or to various kinds of reading without reading, such as ... • Measuring the Presence of Roman Rhetoric: An Intertextual Analysis of
           Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana IV
    • Abstract: In the late Roman empire, Christianity transcended its origins and became an apparatus of the state. As Christianity's place in the Roman world changed, it assimilated much of classical culture.1 Christian leaders struggled to reconcile the lingering foreignness of their religion with conflicting Roman ideals. Throughout his writings, Augustine exemplifies this struggle to adapt classical culture to Christian purposes.Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana (DDC) is an investigation of Christian doctrine and teaching. In the early fifth century, the use of rhetoric by teachers of Christianity was a matter of controversy.2 In Book 4 of DDC, Augustine argues for the incorporation of rhetorical technique and draws ... • Open Greek and Latin Data for the Challenges of the Fragmentary State of
the Primary Sources for the Pentekontaetia
    • Abstract: The goal of this essay is to describe the particular set of challenges for education and scholarly research presented by the primary sources on which we rely today for the history of ancient Greece in the Pentekontaetia, the half-century between the Persian Wars (499–479 bc) and the Peloponnesian War (431–404 bc). The most difficult challenge lies in the fragmentary state of many of these sources for the central period in what has often been called the Golden Age of Greece. "Fragmentary," in this context, means that these sources are not today extant in intact versions from independent transmission of their texts, but rather consist of many different kinds of reuses of information deriving from lost works that are ... • Cicero's Rhetoric of Terror
    • Abstract: Classicists have always had a problem of evidence. While it may seem churlish to complain about paucity when discussing the late Republic, historians of even the mid-first century have limited options, and even fewer options that offer independent evidence of events. When examining the Catilinarians, for example, we are primarily dependent on Cicero and Sallust (the latter of whom read Cicero), and to a lesser degree on Appian (BC 2.2–7), Plutarch (Cic. 10–23; Caes. 7–8; Cat. Min. 22–24; Crassus 13), and Dio (37.10, 29–42), who were at the very least familiar with Cicero.1 Perhaps more seriously, there are few comparable incidents with which we can compare the Catilinarian affair to gain more information: ...
Jhs. V. Chr. by Britta
           Özen-Kleine (review)
    • Abstract: The present book is the author's lightly reworked doctoral dissertation on the so-called "rejuvenation" of the representation of gods and men during classical times in Athens. It analyzes mostly the iconography on the vases, but includes brief mentions of the Parthenon friezes and other sculptures. The book reads as a dissertation and that is how it should be understood with both its merits and shortcomings. It is divided into seven chapters, including the short Introduction and Conclusion. The Introduction basically outlines the rest of the book, discusses the status quo of the research, and presents the need to explain the representation of the different life stages of men in the writers of the archaic and ... • Legible Religion: Books, Gods, and Rituals in Roman Culture by Duncan
           MacRae (review)
    • Abstract: MacRae's core question is how we can understand a religion—in his case, Roman religion—that has texts but not scriptures in the Judeo-Christian sense of canonical sacred texts. Looking at the period of the last century of the Republic, "Varro and other members of the Roman elite produced large numbers of learned treatises on traditional Roman religious culture" that together represent what MacRae proposes is a "civil theology" (3; theologia civilis, a term adopted from Augustine). Collectively, these texts presented intellectual discussions of gods and cult within the distinct Roman context. Despite the burning of the books of Numa by the Senate in 181 bce, "the Roman cult that Numa supposedly founded became ... Read More

  • Poetic Autonomy in Ancient Rome by Luke Roman (review)
    • Abstract: Luke Roman's investigation of the expression of literary autonomy in first-person genres of Latin poetry makes a compelling case for the invention, development, and enduring sophistication of a Latin discourse of literary aesthetics that differentiates poetic refinement from (and privileges it over) political achievement and moral utility. Most of the poets, poems, and genres he treats in the volume are central to the Latin literary canon and have been well studied for centuries, not to say millennia—Catullus, Propertius, Horace, Tibullus, Ovid (amatory and didactic elegy and the exile poetry), Martial, Statius (Silvae), Juvenal; in fine, the genres of epigram, elegy, satire, and lyric. Specialists in Augustan ... Read More

  • Athenian Comedy in the Roman Empire ed. by C.W. Marshall and Tom Hawkins
           (review)
    • Abstract: Athenian Comedy in the Roman Empire opens with a scene from Pliny the Younger's Letters (6.21): one Vergilius Romanus (otherwise unknown) recites his latest composition, his first attempt at Old Comedy (comoedia vetus), before a small audience, to great acclaim. Pliny's brief account of this performance raises many questions, all unanswerable, about matters ranging from genre to staging. Ignorance about the details of such comic performances inspired C.W. Marshall and Tom Hawkins to solicit papers exploring receptions of Old and New Comedy in the Roman Empire. The resulting volume, as a whole, is rewarding. Marshall and Hawkins have assembled a diverse and stimulating collection of essays, which will prove to be a ... Read More

  • The Play of Allusion in the Historia Augusta by David Rohrbacher (review)
    • Abstract: It is no overstatement to say that the Historia Augusta (HA) remains one of the most vexed and hotly debated sources to survive from antiquity. In his seminal work The Last Pagans of Rome, Alan Cameron pulled no punches in describing the woefully problematic nature of the work: "It had always been obvious that these Lives were products of low quality. Not only are they full of errors, absurdities, and manifestly forged documents, they cite as authorities no fewer than thirty-five otherwise unknown and for the most part surely bogus historians and biographers."1 Following such a damning indictment, one could be forgiven for disengaging from the HA altogether, and thus avoiding the complex debate on its relative ...
