  • The Northwestern Command’s Response to Insurgent Assaults on Dabat,
           Ethiopia
    • Abstract: On September 12, 1974, a military junta known as the Därg (Committee) deposed Häylä Səllase, the last emperor of Ethiopia, who claimed descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The new military government ruthlessly suppressed opposition groups that called for the formation of a “People’s Government.”1 That led to the emergence of ethno-nationalist armed groups like the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). After receiving training by the much older armed group, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), a small band of university students and high school teachers launched armed resistance in February 1975 in the lowlands of Dädäbit, western Tigray, against the Därg in the name of the ... • Communal Identity Transformation in Soqotra: From Status Hierarchy to
           Ethnic Ranking
    • Abstract: Soqotra is located on the threshold of two continents (Arabia and Africa), and on the pivotal sea lanes within the paths of the monsoon winds that historically linked Europe, the Middle East, and Asia in the maritime trade of the northwest Indian Ocean. Such a location made the island the obligatory stopover for all seafaring peoples in that part of the world, and from at least the first millennium BCE, Soqotra became a residence for visitors from various nations.1 This demographic mosaic with its haphazard combination of diverse ethnicities and phenotypic métissage provides the implicit background for the discussion of the process of Soqotra’s political incorporation and its effects on the transformation of ... • The British on the Ethiopian Bench: 1942–1944
    • Abstract: The violent Italian rule in Ethiopia was cut short in 1941 by the joint Anglo-Ethiopian forces—unlikely partners brought together by Mussolini’s June 1940 fatal blunder. Once the dark days of Fascist blackshirts and black banda-askaris were over, however, the future of the newly “liberated” Ethiopia did not appear better or brighter. The British simply took advantage of their colossal military presence in Ethiopia to establish control over all its main economic sectors and national institutions. And, by acting apparently as liberators turned conquistadors, they earned for themselves public resentment and mistrust in Ethiopia—even before the liberation euphoria was over. The post-1941 British predominance, as ... Read More

  • The Justice of Improving Security and Confronting Poverty: The Role of
Transnational NGOs and Communities in Somalia
    • Abstract: Over the past 25 years, transnational nongovernmental organizations (TNGOs) and transnational communities (TCs) have assumed an increasingly important role in African development.2 In societies with functional state institutions,3 TNGOs often mediate relations between the state and society, while in countries where the state has retreated from the public sector or suffers from failure, TNGOs and TCs provide direct humanitarian and developmental assistance.4 In the latter case, the ability to operate within conflicting national and transnational public spheres is required.5In promoting human dignity, TNGOs and TCs move beyond the traditional state-centric focus and often aim at what Amartya Sen refers to as a “civic ... • The Sudans: Macrohistory and Micropolitics
    • Abstract: Since mid-2011, Sudan and South Sudan have struggled to come to terms with the realities of their political divorce. While relations between the two states have become increasingly more manageable, they each face similar challenges of forging national identities, managing brutal conflicts within their respective boundaries, and being effective stewards of their economies.A quick snapshot of some data reveals a grim picture. South Sudan currently ranks 169th out of 188 countries on the Human Development Index, with Sudan not far behind at 167th.1 Both countries rank among the world’s most corrupt; they are featured among Transparency International’s ten lowest scorers that are also “characterized by bloody and ... • The Oromo and the Christian Kingdom of Ethiopia 1300–1700 by
           Mohammed Hassen (review)
    • Abstract: In his now-classic book, The Oromo of Ethiopia 1570–1850: A History,1 Mohammed Hassen stated that incontrovertible historical evidence attested to the presence of settled agricultural Oromo communities within the territories of the medieval Christian kingdom of Ethiopia. The statement contradicted a standard narrative in Ethiopian history that the Oromo were newcomers who invaded Ethiopia in the sixteenth century. Reputable historians of Ethiopia rejected the assertion swiftly and vociferously as an invented account of a fictitious nation that never existed in history.2 Focused at the time on the history of the Oromo between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, Hassen promised to follow up his assertion with ... • Linguistic, Oriental and Ethiopian Studies in Memory of Paolo Marrassini
ed. by Alessandro Bausi et al. (review)
    • Abstract: Begun as a festschrift for the honoree in his 70th year, this weighty book of four remembrances and 36 articles appears as a memorial to Paolo Marrassini (1942–2013), Professor and Chair of Ethiopic Language and Literature at the University of Florence, city of his birth, and Professor and Chair of Semitic Philology there until his retirement in 2009.The book’s table of contents is found (at the time of this writing) as part of the book’s entry on the publisher’s website, Harrassowitz-verlag. de. The 36 articles range in length from 7 to 56 pages and average 20. Eighteen of the 36 are in English, 15 in Italian, and 3 in French. Twenty may be considered primarily works of philology, 10 of linguistics, and 6 of ... Read More

  • Islamic Law, Gender and Social Change in Post-Abolition Zanzibar by Elke
           Stockreiter (review)
    • Abstract: The past decade has seen the publication of a number of excellent historical and anthropological texts that illuminate previously little-explored but crucial aspects of Zanzibar’s colonial past. Consonant with a growing trend in Islamic studies, several works have paid particular attention to courts and to court documents as important sources of information about participants’ perceptions of and contributions to shaping social discourse.1 Several of these have newly textualized women’s lives, their material concerns, their negotiation and performance of social status, and the texture of their agency.2 Zanzibar has historically been a highly plural and variously stratified society, and its legacy of slavery has long ... • Richard Pankhurst (1927–2017)
    • Abstract: Professor Richard PankhurstIt was with deep sorrow that I learned of the passing on February 16 of Professor Richard Pankhurst, at age 89. He was my teacher, mentor and role model, an eminent historian, a foremost economist, and a celebrated educator who listened to the voices of various generations of Ethiopians on whose world views he left an indelible mark.Indeed, we have lost a scholarly giant, a proud citizen of the world, a patron of Ethiopian history, economics, art and culture. Like his mother Sylvia, who was a celebrated feminist of the suffragette movement, Richard Pankhurst dedicated his whole life to the cause of our country, Ethiopia. His prodigious intellectual contribution to Ethiopia is unmatched by ... Read More
