  • Parents and Children Who Are Estranged in Adulthood: A Review and
           Discussion of the Literature
    • Authors: Lucy Blake
Abstract: This review article examines what is known about estrangement between parents and adult children in terms of definition, prevalence, causes, and consequences. Estrangement has been defined and conceptualized in different ways, although most definitions have focused on the negative quality of the relationship and the voluntarily or intentional decision of at least one family member to initiate and maintain distance. A diverse range of factors that are often interlinked has been found to contribute to estrangement. The consequences of estrangement from a parent or child include experiencing reduced levels of psychological well-being, feelings of loss, and experiences and/or perceptions of stigma. The estrangement literature has the potential to reveal variation in the quality of parent–child relationships in adulthood so that family scholars can move beyond our assumptions and understand family relationships as they are, rather than how they could or should be.

  • Deep Structure of the Human Affectional System: Introduction to
           Interpersonal Acceptance–Rejection Theory
    • Authors: Ronald P. Rohner; Jennifer E. Lansford
      Pages: 426 - 440
Abstract: Interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory (IPARTheory) proposes that across cultures and other sociodemographic groups, interpersonal acceptance and rejection consistently predict the psychological and behavioral adjustment of children and adults (Rohner, 1986, 2004). The goals of this article are to provide a description of the major tenets of IPARTheory, summarize findings from empirical tests of the theory, and suggest future directions tied to the other articles in this special collection as well as for the field moving forward.

  • A Systematic Review of Meta-Analyses of Research on Interpersonal
           Acceptance–rejection Theory: Constructs and Measures
    • Authors: Abdul Khaleque; Sumbleen Ali
      Pages: 441 - 458
Abstract: This article is an overview of 12 meta-analyses conducted to test the basic postulates of interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory (IPARTheory). These meta-analyses are based on a total of 551 (48% unpublished and 52% published) studies on the theory. The studies were conducted over period of 42 years, from 1975 through 2016. They represent an aggregate sample of 149,440 respondents, including males and females, children and adults. Respondents were taken from 31 countries on five continents. The findings show that interpersonal acceptance and rejection have significant pan-cultural associations with the psychological adjustment and personality dispositions of children and adults everywhere. The results reviewed also show that the principal measures used so far in IPARTheory research are reliable for cross-cultural application.

  • Father Love and Mother Love: Contributions of Parental Acceptance to
           Children's Psychological Adjustment
    • Authors: Xuan Li; Jason Meier
      Pages: 459 - 490
Abstract: Research on child development increasingly includes data on both parents and from different cultures. However, the relative importance of fathers versus mothers for child adjustment is still under debate. The present review compares the contributions of perceived paternal and maternal acceptance to various child adjustment indicators among samples of families around the world. We reviewed 127 published studies that included child-reported paternal and maternal acceptance and developmental outcomes. Regardless of the sex of parent, children benefited from perceived parental acceptance. Fathers and mothers were often found to both predict adjustment significantly to varying degrees. Paternal acceptance tended to be related to children's problem behavior and psychopathology, whereas maternal acceptance was more likely to contribute to socioemotional development. Paternal and maternal acceptance also often jointly contributed to child adjustment through their interaction with each other and with other predictors. Moreover, the link between parental acceptance and adjustment was often moderated by child gender and cultural context.

  • Exploring the Benefits of Affectionate Communication: Implications for
           Interpersonal Acceptance–Rejection Theory
    • Authors: Amanda Denes; Margaret Bennett, Kara L. Winkler
      Pages: 491 - 506
Abstract: In the past several decades, a robust line of research has developed in the field of communication exploring the interpersonal outcomes of receiving and giving affection. The present review offers an in-depth examination of research on affectionate communication and its implications for understanding interpersonal acceptance and rejection. The review begins by introducing the primary theoretical framework used to explore affectionate communication, followed by an overview of the benefits of receiving and giving affection. Following this review, the implications of affectionate communication for acceptance–rejection researchers are presented, including a discussion of the complexities of affection and what such intricacies may mean for future theorizing in this domain. Lastly, future directions for acceptance–rejection research in light of this review are presented.

  • Interpersonal Acceptance–Rejection Theory: Application to Lesbian,
           Gay, and Bisexual Persons
    • Authors: Kimberly A. Fuller
      Pages: 507 - 520
Abstract: Many researchers have focused on parents' responses to their child's sexual identity. Although this type of research has been conducted over the past 2 decades on the impact of coming out, there is not a consistently implemented theoretical orientation used across lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) literature for describing and understanding the implications of coming out. However, interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory (IPARTheory) can be used as a framework to describe the experiences of acceptance–rejection LGB people face after disclosure. Many of the constructs outlined in IPARTheory are present throughout the literature on LGB coming-out experiences, but a more thorough understanding of the implications of LGB parental acceptance–rejection across the life span is needed, especially as it affects psychological well-being and adult relationship development. Several aspects of IPARTheory that need to be developed further to encompass the ways LGB people experience parental acceptance–rejection are discussed. Further, suggestions are made to better measure the specific types of acceptance–rejection faced by LGB people when they come out.

  • A Four-Factor Outcome Model for Family Case Management Services With
Children and Families Who Have Experienced Complex Trauma
    • Authors: Jane F. Gilgun; Samantha Hirschey
      Pages: 537 - 556
Abstract: This article proposes a four-factor outcome model for case management services with children and families when the children have experienced complex trauma. The factors are relationships between service users and practitioners, personal characteristics of service users and practitioners, social service system influences, and external influences. The model is based upon research on the common factors model of psychotherapy outcomes, research that the first author conducted on case management services with children and families who have experienced complex trauma, the authors' practice experience with children and families who have experienced complex trauma, related research and theory, and ideas from evidence-based practice. While the model is tailored to family case management, we believe it is applicable to other domains of social services, such as family and couples therapy, child and family mental health, family advocacy, and family policy formulation and evaluation.

  • 50 Years of Loving: Interracial Romantic Relationships and Recommendations
           for Future Research
    • Authors: Natalie S. de Guzman; Adrienne Nishina
      Pages: 557 - 571
Abstract: In honor of the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia (1967), the landmark civil rights case that invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage in the United States, this review describes the field's past and future directions for studying interracial romantic relationships. We briefly present history, theories, and research about interracial and interethnic romantic relationships, and provide suggestions for future research. We also highlight the need for flexible racial and ethnic categories as demographics and distinctions shift in the United States by proposing the use of adaptable panethnic (a set of related ethnic groups that have been combined and collectively labeled) categories, rather than racial categories, or the use of more specific ethnic or nationality categories depending on a variety of factors. Finally, we discuss multiracial and multiethnic individuals in the research on romantic relationships, acknowledging that multiracial and multiethnic individuals are both the offspring of such unions and a rapidly growing demographic.
