  • The Natural Principles of Love
    • Authors: John Gottman; Julie Gottman
      Pages: 7 - 26
Abstract: In this Original Voices article we summarize the past four and a half decades of our work on relationship stability and happiness and explore the theoretical implications of that empirical research. First, we briefly review the laboratory research, clinical work, and the mathematics used to understand our results and build our theory. Then we describe the sound relationship house theory, constructive blueprints for managing conflict, and the three phases of love. We use the term love in the narrow sense of the primary emotions that draw people together to form a lasting, committed relationship between lovers, regardless of sexual orientation. Although we began with no theory at all, we were led by our data and our clinical work at the Gottman Institute.

  • Theorizing the Decision-Making Process for Divorce or Reconciliation
    • Authors: Sarah Allen; Alan J. Hawkins
      Pages: 50 - 68
Abstract: Divorce is commonplace in the United States, with an abundant scholarship on the phenomenon. Most research has focused on predictors of divorce, associations between divorce and family member well-being, and interventions and policies for divorcing couples and children. Although this scholarship tells us much about why couples get divorced and the impact divorce has, it has little to say about how individuals think about and couples talk about and make meaning of their decision-making process regarding divorce or reconciliation. The purpose of this article is to examine and critique existing theoretical frameworks used to understand decision-making processes both generally in the field and specifically in the context of divorce ideation. Our goal is to propose future research and theory directions that are better suited to capturing the complexity of decision-making processes within the liminal space of the lives of individuals who are married but facing the proximate possibility of divorce.

  • Research on Correlates of Marital Quality and Stability in Muslim
           Countries: A Review
    • Authors: Nooshin Sabour Esmaeili; Dominik Schoebi
      Pages: 69 - 92
Abstract: The study of marital quality and stability has attracted widespread attention over the past two decades, with considerable interest in identifying predictors of marital quality and (in)stability. Most of this research comes from Western countries, however, and similar research from other areas is only beginning to develop. In particular, little coherent literature in this area has emerged from Muslim countries. Understanding how marriages develop, succeed, and fail is important for families across the globe, and perspectives relying predominantly on Western data and research perspectives may be of limited use in other contexts. The current review summarizes the existing empirical literature on the basis of samples from predominantly Muslim countries; identifies existing evidence to reveal important gaps with particular emphasis on personal, interpersonal, and contextual factors; and explores potential mechanisms that might explain associations between these factors and indicators of marital functioning.

  • Immigrant Family Resilience in Context: Using a Community-Based Approach
to Build a New Conceptual Model
    • Authors: Colleen K. Vesely; Bethany L. Letiecq, Rachael D. Goodman
      Pages: 93 - 110
Abstract: Immigrant families settling in the United States face pressures to acculturate and become self-sufficient, yet their lives are highly regulated by restrictive and punitive policies and programs that may hinder their ability to cope with exposure to trauma and to build resilience. We theorize that U.S. policies and practices may exacerbate immigration-related trauma experiences and/or create new traumas and stressors for families. To demonstrate our reasoning, we use exemplar cases from our community-based participatory research project in partnership with immigrant women. We situate and contextualize the lived experiences and uncertainties of immigrant families and offer a new conceptual model for understanding how macro-level forces may impede immigrants' resilience. The model includes uncertainty and family separation; ecosystemic trauma and stress, including institutional betrayal trauma; limited navigational capital; and erosion of collectivism and community solidarity. Implications for future research and theory development are discussed.

  • Cascading Resilience: Leverage Points in Promoting Parent and Child
    • Authors: Jennifer L. Doty; Laurel Davis, Joyce A. Arditti
      Pages: 111 - 126
Abstract: While negative cascades have been well studied, little has been written on the promotion of upward spirals. We propose a conceptual model that situates parenting interventions as a leverage point in promoting positive cascades. We integrate broaden-and-build theory and social capital theory into the model to explain micro- and macro-level patterns of change in longitudinal prevention studies, acknowledging that when socioeconomic resources are scarce, investment in parenting may be challenging. Parenting prevention programs provide evidence of improvements in effective parenting behaviors, promote increased confidence and a belief in parenting abilities, and over time may activate positive cascades that affect other domains in parents' lives, such as health and peer support. Resulting positive emotions are hypothesized to broaden coping and build long-term resources that promote resilience. Social resources may then spill over to benefit individual, family, and community systems. Research methods for testing developmental cascades and practical applications are also considered.

  • Issues of Stream-Aquifer Interactions in Grout Lined Channels in Urban
    • Authors: Barry Hibbs; Michael Harrison, Mercedes Merino
      Pages: 127 - 143
Abstract: Grout lined storm drains are used worldwide to convey storm runoff away from urban areas. They also convey dry weather flows such as car wash runoff, lawn runoff, and other “nuisance flows” in urban centers. Areas in Southern California and elsewhere have shallow water tables where dry weather flows in grout lined storm drains consist primarily of perennial groundwater baseflows. In these areas, groundwater leaks through cracks, joints, weepholes, and intentional dewatering structures into storm drains and eventually flows into natural channels, coastal wetlands, and estuaries. The “lined” sections of these channels are not always impervious; in fact, the lining of the channels often affords excellent opportunities to collect groundwater samples at discrete points that are usually not present along unlined channels where well control is sparse or where technical or legal issues prevent installation of piezometers. Frequently, as much as 95% of the nutrient and trace element loading to urban catchments during dry weather is from seepage of groundwater that is laden with pollutants. This project presents several examples of our experiences in conducting stream/aquifer studies in lined and semi-lined channels in Southern California. Sub-projects include evolution of groundwater quality along flowpaths, detection of unwanted recharge mounds in shallow groundwater systems due to leaky water main pipes, and comparisons of water quality in lined and unlined sections of a creek. Tools that are utilized and described in the paper include isotopic tracers; trace element and standard inorganic constituents; and innovative sampling methods.
