  • John Heartfield's Thalmann Montages: The Politics behind Images of
           International Antifascism
    • Authors: Cuevas-Wolf; C.
      Pages: 1 - 24
Abstract: The German photomontagist John Heartfield visualized Willi Münzenberg's antifascist position in the Communist Party as early as 1932 and became famous for antifascist photomontages, published exclusively in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) from 1929 to 1938. Heartfield contributed the image of Ernst Thälmann as a symbol of antifascism through montages for the AIZ in 1934 and 1936. The Comintern's critique of the April 1936 montage, which is understood to be aimed more at the AIZ's publisher, Münzenberg, entangled him and the AIZ in a double-edged crisis in the Comintern. By investigating the fate of Münzenberg's Thälmann campaign and his supraparty organization the Internationale Arbeiterhilfe, the article examines why the Comintern undermined the AIZ, a forceful proponent of antifascism in the European public sphere, and how Joseph Stalin intended to control Münzenberg's media operation to organize a propaganda campaign in the name of Popular Front unity during the onset of the Spanish Civil War.

  • First as Tragedy, Second as Farce: Heartfield's Photomontages and the
           Engaged Viewer
    • Authors: Nikolic; M.
      Pages: 25 - 40
Abstract: Apart from the work of Eduard Fuchs, there has been little Marxist scholarship on caricature and satire. This is a glaring omission, especially in light of the work of John Heartfield, whose photomontages were viewed across the political spectrum as well as across class boundaries. To discover how Heartfield's photomontages interpellate their subject as a politically engaged viewer, this article investigates the mechanisms by which satire addresses its audience, how it communicates its message, and to what degree we might judge its effectiveness as a means of persuasion. A Benjaminian analysis of the Verfremdungseffekt produced by montage, the alienating distanciation of unexpected juxtapositions, contributes to the construction of a true dialectical image of satire, which allows us to plot the oppositional axes of satire and to extrapolate the characteristics of other forms of mass persuasion such as state propaganda. In this way we can trace how mass persuasion results in political action.

  • Dada: Art and the Discourse of Advertising
    • Authors: Beals; K.
      Pages: 41 - 73
Abstract: The Dada movement's employment of advertising, though readily apparent and frequently noted, is often seen as a simple satire of bourgeois consumer culture, a parody that targets advertising itself. This article presents a more historically informed account of the use of advertising in the Dada movement. After demonstrating similarities between the Dadaists' advertising strategies and those advocated by advertising theorists and practitioners of the time, the article shows how Dadaists used advertising to intervene in ongoing debates about art and commerce, pitting themselves against both expressionist artists who struck a noncommercial pose and cultural reformers who argued for a synthesis of art and industry.

  • The Truth of Modern Society' Critical Theory and Fascism
    • Authors: Breuer, S; Blazek, J.
      Pages: 75 - 103
Abstract: The article discusses the contributions of the Frankfurt School (Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and Erich Fromm) to a theory of fascism in the 1930s and 1940s, after the Institute for Social Research had moved to the United States. The discussion concentrates on the economic and psychoanalytic aspects and concludes that Critical Theory remained too close to traditional Marxism to generate more profound insights into the nature of fascism, especially with regard to its political features.

  • Radical Democracy without Risks' Habermas on Constitutional Patriotism
           and Civil Disobedience
    • Authors: Cıdam; C.
      Pages: 105 - 132
Abstract: Although it is one of the least theorized concepts in his oeuvre, Jürgen Habermas's recourse to constitutional patriotism at critical junctures of his intellectual career points to the concept's significant role in his democratic theory. In analyzing Habermas's invocations of constitutional patriotism in his accounts of civil disobedience, the article argues that Habermas uses the concept not only as an alternative to nationalism but also as a way to deal with the indeterminacy of the radical core of deliberative democracy. In doing so, however, he inadvertently undermines his own powerful criticism of the philosophy of the subject. What suffers from this unintended resurgence of the philosophy of the subject, in both its liberal and its republican variants, is the radical core of constitutional democracy itself.

  • Reflections on the European Promise
    • Authors: Papastephanou; M.
      Pages: 133 - 162
Abstract: Claims, aspirations, and hopes for Europe as a postnational constellation are often based on the assumption that the European sociality, as it emerges from its public discourses, is more or less committed to a normative promise of global justice. This faith in Europe lacks no critical edge. Jürgen Habermas, for instance, promotes a sustained critique of current European mentalities that aims to unravel Europe's normative potential. In critical dialogue with Habermas's most recent ideas on this subject, the article argues that, to be meaningful, the European promise requires something other than a mere postnationalization. It requires a heightened understanding of global justice and a critical relation with past and present liabilities that is more reforming of European consciousness. Borrowing from aesthetic idioms, the article terms this different outlook an "anamorphic gaze." Its relevance is illustrated through examples of challenges typically overlooked in the European public sphere because they do not satisfy the easily digestible affective and political criteria of a "crisis" narrative.

  • Protestant Islam in Weimar Germany: Hugo Marcus and "The Message of the
           Holy Prophet Muhammad to Europe"
    • Authors: Baer; M. D.
      Pages: 163 - 200
Abstract: The article explores the Islam envisioned in the extensive writings of one of the most prominent German converts to Islam in Weimar Germany, the Jewish poet, philosopher, and political activist Hugo Marcus (1880–1966). Marcus's understanding of Islam is a surprisingly Eurocentric and even Germanic one. It is not only the religion of the German past, Marcus claims, but also, given its faith in the intellect and in progress, the religion of the future. His ideas do not figure in the historiography of Weimar Germany. While many of the new political notions of the future that Weimar writers contemplated have been explored, scholars have paid less attention to the spiritual and religious utopias envisioned in the 1920s. This article engages with German responses to the rupture of World War I and the realm of imagined political possibilities in Weimar Germany by focusing on one such utopia overlooked in historiography, Marcus's German-Islamic synthesis.

  • Sound Biopolitics: Modernist Music and Degeneration in the Wilhelmine
    • Authors: Gentry; J.
      Pages: 201 - 227
Abstract: After the success of Richard Strauss's Salome, the German music world devolved into bitter arguments about the degeneration of both music and society. Simultaneously, Germany's constitutional crisis over imperial wars generated new nationalist coalitions and racist politics to combat revolutionaries. This article demonstrates the shared contours of crisis across music and politics, specifically placing Salome in an imperial context and showing the role of German biopolitics in the repression of modernist music. Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow oversaw a shift from positive to negative biopolitics, which sought to improve national health by removing unhealthy opposition. Both the structures of imperialism and the specter of degeneration should be credited with a pre-Nazi merger of sovereignty and biopolitics, which affected aesthetics no less than eugenics. Modernist music in the vein of Strauss became pathologized and policed by critics, conductors, and state authorities, as composers lost their freedom of expression and exposure to the public.
