  • Pain Syndrome That Occurs with Increased Usage of Mobile Technology:
           “Text Neck”

    • Authors: Nihan ÖZÜNLÜ PEKYAVAŞ ; Ozlem BASTUG YURUK , Fettah SAYGILI
      Abstract: Smartphones and tablets are mobile technological devices that are used for many purposes such as communication, transportation, entertainment, education, and security. Although it is used by all age groups of the community, especially children and adolescents spend a long time with smartphones and tablets. With the increasing use of mobile technology, various symptoms such as musculoskeletal pain, insomnia, difficulty in concentrating, and fatigue appear. The definition of "text neck" is the firstly described by Dr. Dean L. Fishman as has a problem of the neck, head and shoulder pain, and numbness in the upper extremities who use smartphones and tablets for a long time. This kyphotic posture, which the head and arms are at the front for a long time while using mobile devices, is thought to pose a potential risk for early arthritis onset and disc degeneration. “Text neck” has various symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, headache, insomnia, tingling, and numbness at the hands. Although there are no specific diagnostic criteria for "text neck", some researchers have developed photographic methods to evaluate the head and neck posture. Preventive physiotherapy approaches can be suggested for “text neck”. In case of symptoms, therapeutic physiotherapy techniques can be applied. There are very few studies on preventive and therapeutic physiotherapy approaches. In these studies, postural education, to increase awareness, ergonomic design, and exercise programs become prominent. In this review, factors that cause “text neck" syndrome, symptoms, assessment methods, and treatment approaches are discussed with the literature.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Obesity: The Role of FTO and MC4R Gene
           Polymorphisms

    • Authors: Ayçıl ÖZTURAN ŞİRİN ; Yasemin AKDEVELİOĞLU
      Abstract: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial endocrine disorder with a complex etiology. It is also associated with metabolic disorders that increase the risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes in women. Obesity / adiposity and insulin resistance is a common problem in women with PCOS. Genome projects, which examine the human genome in detail, have been shown to have a large number of genes and genetic variations associated with obesity and some diseases. Among these genes, fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) and melanocortin-4 receptor gene (MC4R) variants are associated with obesity, excess body weight, and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is suggested that genes, FTO and MC4R, may be associated with PCOS through the effects of obesity / adiposity development. In this review article, the relationship of some obesity-related gene polymorphisms (FTO and MC4R) with PCOS has been investigated.

  • Current Approaches to Aspiration Principles in Newborn's Birth Room;
           Role and Responsibilities of Midwives

    • Authors: Deniz BATMAN
      Abstract: When neonatatal mortality statistics are analyzed, it is seen that a significant portion of them occur on the first day of life. This shows how important care and monitoring of the newborn in the delivery room is. Aspiration procedure in the delivery room is widely used in birth clinics in newborns. Many complications that may adversely affect the functioning of the respiratory and circulatory system due to aspiration may occur. In this respect, it is an intervention that should be applied carefully in the newborn. Over the years, the practice of approaching newborns in the delivery room has changed. When the current recommendations of World Health Organization, Turkish Neonatology Association, American Heart Association and International Resuscitation Committee, which direct the neonatal care, are examined, routine aspiration is not recommended for newborns. The midwives' duties and responsibilities include the initial care and examination of the newborn and, if necessary, emergency resuscitation. This shows that midwives have a key role in the aspiration process of the newborn. In this respect, it is important for midwives to have detailed information about aspiration principles in newborn and to know current approaches. Aspiration is applied to neonates in oro-nasopharynx, endotracheal and stomach contents aspiration methods in the delivery room and plays an important role in midwifery care. In this article, current approaches to the principles of aspiration in the delivery room of the newborn and the roles and responsibilities of midwives have been reviewed within the scope of the literature.

  • The Role of Nurses in Spiritual Care in Patients with Breast Cancer

    • Authors: Şule OLGUN
      Abstract: A physically developing disease brings along social and psychological problems. Similarly, fluctuations in the mental and emotional field can lead to physical pathological problems in the individual. Therefore, patients are not only treated physiologically but also culturally, economically, emotionally, spiritually and socially.
