    • Authors: CA Onwubiko, SC Ivy, O Kalu
Abstract: Background: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) remains one of the most serious health problems in the world today. It is a fatal disease which affects all body systems as well as the mental health and social relationships of carriers and asymptomatic patients.

Objective: To determine the pattern of HIV/AIDS risky behaviours and associated determinants among senior secondary school students in Aba North Local Government Area, Abia State.Method: A descriptive cross sectional study carried out to determine the determinants of HIV/AIDS risky behaviours among senior secondary school students in Aba. The multi stage Technique of the probability sampling technique was used in this study to select four (4) public schools in Aba North LGA.Results: The mean age of respondents was 16.06 with an S.D 0f 1.13. Response rate was 99.3% (51.5% females and 47.8% males). 60.4% (249) of our respondents were in SS1, 38.8% (160) were in SS2 and 0.7% (3) were in SS3. 0.5% (2) of the students were within 12-13 years, 23.3% (96) were within 14-15 years, 61.4% (253) were within 16-17 years and 1.0% (4) were 18 years and above. From our findings, 18% (74) of the students were sexually active and majority were within the age range of 16-17 years. 85.9% of the respondents agreed they share sharps like razor blades, clippers etc. Conclusion: The risky behaviours mostly identified were sharing of sharp objects and Sexual activity and some of the determinants considered were Age, Sex (gender) and place of residence. Keywords: HIV, Risky behaviour, Secondary School, Nigeria

  • Situational Analysis on Infection Control Practices in DOTS Centres in 7
Local Government Areas in Abia State
    • Authors: C Okoroafor, OM Chinatu-Nwankwo, UC Egwuekwe
Abstract: Background: Tuberculosis remains a major global health problem. The generalized TB epidemic that the country is experiencing is affecting the young economically productive age groups (15-44) and its transmission is enhanced by the absence of a TB infection control plan in the facility. Objective: To study the infection control practices in Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) centers in 7 local government areas in Abia State.Materials and Methods: This study was done in the health facilities in 7 local government areas in Abia State Nigeria which included Aba North, Aba South, Bende, Ikwuano, IsialaNgwa North, Osisioma, Umuahia North and Umuahia South. This study is not population-based but facility-based. The health care workers who work in the Directly Observed Treatment Short course Centres were included in the study. In a cross sectional descriptive study, 46 primary health care facilities were selected as units of investigation by means of simple random sampling method. Instruments used for data collection were the infection control checklist (modified with the world Centre for Disease Control and Prevention),a selfadministered and an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Data was analysed manually using calculators and tables. A formal permission was obtained from the Department of Community Medicine that enabled us retrieve data for the study. Results: This study revealed the following: Out of 142 health workers interviewed,124( 89.2%) were aware of the increased risk of exposure to TB infection among them. 107 (89.2%) of them knew of a TB infection control activity in their facility and 96 (81.4%) of them had been trained on TB infection control measures. From this study, 44 (35%) of the workers used surgical masks, only 11 (8.7%) used N95 respirators, 80 (63.5%) used disposal gloves. 103 (81.7%) washed their hands with soaps 63 (50%) washed with alcohol rubs and 85 (89.5%) used a Personal Protective Equipment always (PPE). While 125 (94.7%) of works reported that they had infection control policy, 117 (89.3%) had a specific infection control officer and 112 (84.2%) were trained from time to time. Conclusion: The findings of this study are consistent with previous studies done in other countries where there is high prevalence of TB infection. This study suggests that there is a strong association between infection control policy with its implementation and the control of turberculosis infection among health care workers.Recommendation: More health care workers should be employed and regularly trained on the infection control practices. Regular funding should be made by the government and other non-governmental organizations to ensure steady availability of personal protective equipment and compensation of health care workers.

  • Prevalence of Internet Addiction among Medical Students in Abia State
           University, Uturu, Nigeria
    • Authors: OM Chinatu-Nwankwo
Abstract: Introduction: Internet use has increased very rapidly around the world in the recent past and has contributed so much in qualifying the world as a 'global village'. However with internet access becoming so widespread, problematic internet use is increasingly being reported. It has been suggested that excessive internet use could represent addictive behaviour with mental health implications. Objective: To determine the prevalence of internet addiction among medical students in ABSU Nigeria.Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out from April to July 2015 among 200 selected medical students of Abia State University, Uturu, Nigeria selected by simple random sampling. Data was collected using a selfadministered questionnaire prepared from a standardized 'Internet Addiction Test' questionnaire developed by Dr. Kimberly S. Young and was slightly modified for the participants. Results: In the study, 87 (43.5%) of the participants were females and 113 (56.5%) males. Most of the participants were in the 21-25 year age group (56.0%). Overall analysis of subjects with internet addiction showed that 5 (2.5%) of subjects had severe internet addiction based on the scoring system used in this study, that is, those with scores 80-100. Out of these 5, 2 (1%) were females and 3 (1.5%) were males. [n=200]. Also, of the participants, 1 (2.3%) of the 15-20 year age group [n=43], 3 (2.7%) of the 21-25 year age group [n=112] and 1 (2.22) of the 25-30 year age group [n=45] had severe internet addiction based on the scoring system. Conclusion: Internet addiction is a major problem in our society which is thought to still be in its infant stage but may have gone past this stage as dearth of studies and data in this part of the world obscure the reality of this mammoth disorder. Keywords: Internet, Addiction, Medical Students, Uturu

  • Histopathological pattern of diseases of the cervix in Aba, South Eastern
           Nigeria: A seven-year retrospective analysis (2007-2013)
    • Authors: SAU Offiah, FE Igwe, N Eleweke, SN Onwere, B Chigbu
Abstract: Background: Diseases of the cervix continue to pose a major public health problem in developing countries. Objective: To ascertain the pattern and frequency of cervical lesions in Aba, and the findings compared with the records of other workers elsewhere.Design: A retrospective analysis of hysterectomy, trachelectomy and surgical biopsy materials.Setting: Abia State University Teaching Hospital and Aba Diagnostic Center, Aba, Nigeria.Method: The Departmental Surgical Registers from 2007-2013 were studied. The original request cards and case notes were retrieved and scrutinized for patients' age, presentation and initial clinical diagnosis. The biopsy slides were retrieved from the departmental archive and studied using light microscope. The cases were categorized into neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. The neoplastic cases were grouped into benign and malignant conditions, and further classified using 2004 World Health Organization (WHO) scheme. The data was processed using EPI-INFO version 2000 series. Results: A total of 4,624 surgical specimen were received by the department within the 7-year study period. There were 356 samples from the cervix, 342 of which met the inclusion criteria for this study. Two hundred and two 202(59.1%) of the cases were non-neoplastic, while 140(40.9%) were neoplastic conditions. The commonest non-neoplastic lesion was chronic nonspecific cervicitis. The commonest benign neoplastic condition was cervical polyp. The commonest malignant condition was Squamous cell carcinoma. The age range was 17 to 93 years with a mean age of 44.5 years. The peak age group for the non-neoplastic and malignant conditions were 40 and 49years respectively. Conclusion: There is a high frequency and early onset of diseases of the cervix in our setting; in contrast to what is traditionally described from Western countries. Keywords: Histopathological pattern, Diseases, Cervix

  • The health-related MDGs in Nigeria and 2015: Issues beyond the figures
    • Authors: FC Ezegbe
Abstract: Fifteen years after the Millennium Summit of September 2000 set developmental targets for September 2015 termed “Millennium Development Goals” (MDGs), it is hard to disagree that there is every reason for every signatory member state, stakeholder and interested party to take stock. With 8 goals, 21 quantifiable targets and 60 indicators, the world set up a form of construct to fast track development as a means to better the lives of people living in the countries of the world. The deadline set is here. This paper concentrates on the health-related MDGs namely goals 4, 5 and 6. These goals are reviewed as they concern Nigeria. Moreso, this paper while highlighting the journey so far and the submissions from various sources at the finish line of September 2015, infers that more still needs to be done particularly in the area of child and maternal health. It further seeks to highlight the pending issues even as we enter the post-2015 dispensation in the light of available statistics and peculiar regional realities. Keywords: MDGs, Nigeria, 2015, health-related
