  • Hydrogeological evaluation of geological formations in Ashanti Region,
           Ghana

    • Authors: E. K. Appiah-Adjei, I. Osei-Nuamah
Abstract: The success of groundwater exploitation in an area largely depends on prior knowledge of existing hydrogeological parameters such as borehole yield, overburden thickness, depth of boreholes, static water level, specific capacity and the quality of water. This study, therefore, employed Geographical Information System to assess some of these hydrogeological parameters in the Ashanti Region using the ordinary kriging interpolation method. Data on 2,788 drilled boreholes in the region were used and the assessment focused on the various geological formations in the region that comprised the Birimian, Granitoids, Tarkwaian and Voltaian formations. The study results indicate that the Birimian formation is generally within medium to high yielding potential zones (30 – 60 l/min or higher) with a high drilling success rate of 91% and average borehole depth of 53 m. The Granitoids are, mostly, within the low yielding zone (< 30 l/min) with isolated high yielding boreholes and have average borehole depth and drilling success rate of 50 m and 72 % respectively. The Tarkwaian formation, on other hand, is within the medium yield zone with a drilling success rate of 80 % whilst the Voltaian formation is mainly classified to fall within low yield zone with about 60% success rate although significant high yield zones occur within the sandstone formation underlying its westernmost part in the region. Groundwater in the region is generally potable except in a few locations within the Birimian and ranitoids, where there are problems with levels of iron, nitrate, manganese and pH. Keywords: Groundwater; Hydrogeological parameters; Geological formations; Geographical Information System; Ashanti Region

  • Design, fabrication and evaluation of fish meal pelletizing machine

    • Authors: H. D. Olusegun, A. S. Adekunle, I. O. Ohijeagbon, K. A. Akande, B. G. Mohammad
Abstract: A 113.1kg/h fish meal pellet processing machine which produced 4mm diameter pellet, with an average length of 6mm was designed and fabricated. Design values of 210 was used for the maximum angle that the hopper wall formed with the vertical in the discharge zone, a critical stress of 1.3kPa of the ground particulate materials, and a density of 2.4521kg/m3 of the particulate materials, were used to obtain a hopper smallest outlet diameter of 12.7cm with a capacity of 24,118cm3 which proved efficient for the pelletizing machine. Two 3-cm diameter shafts carried the speed reduction gears with the perforated disc attached to the roller cutters on one end, while at the other end a 5hp motor was connected to the speed reduction gear by pulleys with diameters of 6cm and 12cm respectively. The speed reduction was 1:5 over a motor speed of 2000rpm. The fish meal pelletizing machine utilized 4kg of ingredients to produce 3.77kg pellets at an efficiency of 94.2%. The percentage loss due to unprocessed ground particulate materials was 5.8%.The moisture content of the fish meal pellets after 7days of drying in open air was 26.5% (wet basis). When tested for floatation, the pellets stayed afloat for 9 days, while the un-dried pellets only remained afloat for 2days. A combination of the weight of the twin roller cutters and the addition of some starch to the ground particulate materials assisted the compacting and gelatinization of pellet formed. This machine will be useful to medium and small scale aquaculture farmers and also reduce the need for foreign sources of fish meal in the aquaculture industry, thus conserving foreign exchange. Keywords: Ground particulate materials; mixing; compacting; gelatinizing; pelletizing

  • Peer assessment in graphic design studio: Communication design
           students' perspectives

    • Authors: E. F. Eshun, P. Korwu, E. Appiah
Abstract: Large class-sizes have become a common feature in almost all higher education institutions in developing countries. Consequently, educators have to implement innovative pedagogies and assessment practices to deal with the current challenges in education delivery at that level. The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perceptions of their attitudes during peer assessment practice in graphic design studio in higher education. The study was conducted with 94 students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. The results showed that the students had a positive experience and perception of the peer assessment process. They also held positive views of the task worth of peer-assessment just like their perception of peer-assessment as an aid to learning. The results revealed that peer learning and objectivity are significantly related to task worth. The findings of this study have confirmed the advantages associated with the use of peer-assessment in higher education instead of a teacher centered approach and reaffirmed the existing unequivocal views held by similar studies. Keywords: Peer assessment; students’ perceptions; studio pedagogy; graphic design

  • The determinants of pottery demand in Ghana

    • Authors: S. Nortey, R. Amoanyi, A. Essuman
Abstract: The pottery industry in Ghana has been experiencing low demand for its products due to the influx of plastic products and other substitutes. Empirical studies reveal that consumers prefer these traditional products for their domestic and aesthetic uses. This paper examined the determinants of pottery demand in Ghana. Two pottery centres each in five regions in Ghana in addition to 1421 pottery consumers were randomly selected for the study. Using descriptive statistics under the qualitative and quantitative research designs, the study revealed that price of pottery products and their availability play a very significant role in determining demand. Results on quality and perceived purpose or function of pottery products are however mixed. Keywords: Pottery; demand; determinants; Ghana

  • The vulnerability of peri-urban farm households with the emergence of land
           Markets in Accra

    • Authors: C. Y. Oduro, R. Adamtey
Abstract: Accra, the capital of Ghana, is a fast-growing African city. Its growth has brought in its wake an ever-increasing demand for land, which has in turn led to the emergence of a land market that is increasingly supplanting the age-old customary land tenure system. The customary land tenure system is based on communal, rather than individual ownership of land. However, over the last few decades, the system has come under pressure from the forces of rapid urbanization, city expansion and increasing demand for land for urban development. The purpose of this paper was to examine the vulnerability of residents of indigenous communities in peri-urban Accra due to the emerging urban land market. The case study approach has been used to explore vulnerability among residents of two indigenous communities in peri-urban Accra in respect of their ability to access land. Household surveys, focus group discussions and key informant interviews involving community members, leaders and municipal officials were the main techniques used to collect data. The study revealed that indigenous and long-term residents had their farmlands converted to urban development without any measures in place to protect them from the collapsing customary land tenure system and the evolving urban land market. This has negatively impacted their quality of life, especially with respect to livelihoods. There is therefore the need for municipal assemblies to include the preservation of farmlands in the management of physical growth and land use so as to minimize the rate at which farmlands are being converted to urban development. Measures should also be put in place to restore farm households that have lost their land to urban development in the form of compensation and provision of alternative livelihoods. Keywords: Vulnerability; customary; land tenure; urban growth; land market

  • Enhancing passenger safety and security in Ghana: Appraising public
           transport operators’ recent interventions

    • Authors: E. F. Sam, A. M. Abane
Abstract: There are increasing calls for regular monitoring and evaluation of safety and security strategies of public transport (PT) operators, especially in developing countries where PT safety and security concerns abound. In respect of this, this study examined the passenger safety and security interventions of PT operators in Ghana. Both the accident-incident theory and routine activities theory served as the theoretical framework within which the study was rooted. Guided by the convergent parallel mixed methods design, data were drawn from in-depth interviews with six major intercity PT operators as well as questionnaires administered to 273 intercity PT passengers. The field data were analysed using both thematic (qualitative data) and correlational (quantitative data) analyses in line with the study design. Varied perspectives on the state of PT passenger safety and security in the country were expressed, and operators’ interventions in this regard were appraised. The study emphasised the need for periodic review of the regulatory framework establishing public transport undertaking by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to reflect changing safety and security circumstances. Keywords: Public transport operators; passenger safety; security; interventions; Ghana

  • Deterrent libraries: Denying persons with disability

    • Authors: E. P. Tudzi, J. T. Bugri, A. K. Danso
Abstract: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which aims at the eradication of poverty by 2030 has as its fourth goal the need to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all. Nonetheless, less than two per cent of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana are able to attain higher education. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether libraries, which are major components of Higher Education Institutions, are physically accessible to even the limited number of PWDs in such Institutions. This study was undertaken in 2015 using the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) in Ghana as a case study. A mixed method approach was used that involved a desk study, interviews and a physical audit of the KNUST Library System using a checklist developed from international  accessibility standards. In all, 16 libraries were assessed. The study concluded that the libraries at KNUST were generally not physically accessible and this served as a deterrent to PWDs in their academic pursuits. Recommendations which include the need for retrofitting the libraries were made to help make the libraries accessible and in consequence help toward the attainment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with respect to Ghana. Keywords: Accessibility; Higher Education Institutions; Libraries; Persons with disabilities (PWDs); Universal design principles

  • Modeling of acetosolv pulp yields from plantain stalk

    • Authors: B. O. Ogunsile, M. A. Omotoso
Abstract: Organosolv pulping processes have been developed as a substitute to the conventional process because of its little or no emission into the environment. Plantain stalk was subjected to acetosolv pulping at atmospheric conditions under the influence of three operating parameters, namely, concentration of acetic acid, H2SO4 – catalyst and time. The influence of the operational
variables on the pulp yield was evaluated using a second - order factorial design. The results showed that the highest pulp yield was 64.14 % which was obtained at the lowest value of the operational variables. The greatest influence on the pulp yield was caused by the concentration of acetic acid while the H2SO4 – catalyst had the least. The polynomial equation derived predicted the pulp yields with errors less than 6 %.Keywords: Acetosolv, pulp yield, operational variables, factorial design

  • Effects of surface gold mining on surface and groundwater bodies in
           Bibiani, Ghana

    • Authors: F. N. Gyawu-Asante, S. Aikins, R. B. Voegborlo
Abstract: A study of the water sources from Bibiani and its environs was conducted between November, 2009 and April, 2010 to determine whether contamination (of water sources) from (these parameters) physical, chemical and trace metal in Bibiani is as a result of mining or geochemical
and biochemical processes within the environment. This was done by collecting water samples from two streams, two rivers, three boreholes (BHs) and three hand dug wells (HDWs). These were analysed in the laboratory. Levels of Arsenic (As), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), pH, Total
Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Temperature, Alkalinity, Hardness, Phosphate (P) and Cyanide (CN) in water sources were determined. Mining related contaminants detected in water samples were As, CN, Mn and Fe. It was observed that surface water pH values were generally higher than that of groundwater samples. As concentrations in surface water samples were higher compared to that of groundwater samples. Also, CN concentration in ground water samples was higher than that of surface water. Ground water contained higher concentration of Mn than surface water; the opposite can be said of Fe concentration in surface
water which was higher than that of ground water. The study also observed that pH, TDS, EC, total alkalinity, total hardness , Arsenic and total cyanide levels in the HDW and BH samples showed 100% compliance with the WHO and EPA limits while Mn and Fe levels indicated traces of non – compliance. Compared to WHO / EPA guidelines, few water sources had one or more
trace metal (Fe, As and Mn) levels outside acceptable limits for drinking. However, most of the levels were safe for human consumption. Keywords: Surface, gold mining, quality, degradation, Bibiani

  • A Hidden Markov model-based approach in brandswitching (A case study of
           the Nigerian telecommunication sector)

    • Authors: F. Opone, E. Ekhousuehi
Abstract: In this work, we considered a Hidden Markov Model for the Telecommunication Industry in Nigeria. There are five major mobile service providers presently in Nigeria: MTN, AIRTEL, GLOBACOM, ETISALAT and NITEL. We proposed a model for decision making in this sector by examining the rationale behind customers’ brand switching. Our sample comprises of 512 respondents from a total population of 37,083 persons in the University of Benin, which consists of academic staff, non-academic staff and students; using proportional allocation to size in the stratified random sampling. As part of the decision making using the proposed model, we observed a set of marketing strategies and then applied our model to project the mobile service providers that stand a chance of relevance in the sector. Our result suggests that, if subscribers of different networks decide to switch from their current network based on these rationales [Price, Service Quality, Brand loyalty, Price and Trust] in a consecutive period of five years, the best marketing strategies for the mobile service provider [GLOBACOM] in the first three years are Price, Service Quality and Brand loyalty respectively. While the mobile service provider [MTN], should invest in the Pricing System and increase the level of Trust existing between them and their subscribers in the fourth and fifth year respectively. Keywords: Hidden Markov Models; Brand switching; Telecommunication Sector
