  • Learning Approaches in Gross Anatomy among Physical Therapy Students: A
           Comparative Study

    • Authors: Dick Herly R. Carskit, Denise O. Orong
Abstract: Anatomy is a foundation subject in the health professions curriculum. Learning human anatomy is an integral component of physical therapy education and professional practice. The physical therapy curriculum in the Philippines requires dissection of the human cadaver as the primary mode of instruction during laboratory sessions. With the advancement of technology, human anatomical models, and video presentations are now readily available for the students to use. However, consensus regarding the best learning approach to anatomy remains obscure, and the prerogative of availing all these resources in anatomy will impact on the school as well as on the students. This study aimed to compare the learning approaches in gross anatomy among physical therapy students. It utilized a comparative experimental method among 40 third year physical therapy students. Four (4) sets of 50 points labeling items administered immediately after every session serve as their post-tests. It is concluded that physical therapy students can learn knowledge in gross anatomy regardless of learning approach employed. Using textbook approach for independent study is comparable to the use of alternative learning approaches such as using cadaver dissection, video presentation, and anatomical model when students learn gross anatomy. Gaining knowledge in gross anatomy will be enhanced when textbook approach is combined with either video presentation or anatomical model approach. However, the use of human cadaver dissection does not compliment with textbook approach to enhance learning gross anatomy. Keywords: learning approaches, gross anatomy, physical therapy, dissection, textbook approach, video presentation, anatomical model.

Abstract: The use of herbal-based medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases is growing worldwide as they have few or no adverse effects, and some of these plants are the Carica papaya Linn. and Euphorbia hirta Linn. The rats were divided randomly into three groups, and each group consists of three (3) rats. The tea preparation of Tawa-tawa the whole plant and Papaya leaves preparations were prepared by collecting, air-drying and, packaging. Each of the Tawa-tawa and Papaya tea preparations was divided into two doses (low and high). The negative control used distilled water. Prior for each treatment, the rats were acclimatized for one week and treated for three consecutive days. The results showed that the low dose of the Tawa-tawa the whole plant showed a significant increase in the platelet compared to the papaya leaves. Hence the Tawa-tawa the whole plant formulated tea showed the promising platelet production potential as manifested in the platelet count of the Sprague dawley R. W. Dawley rats.

           Mice)

    • Authors: Mary Fe S. Behiga, Angelic C. Jagualing, Jaesson L. Napone, Gerardeane Anne B. Vocal
Abstract: There are earlier pharmacological studies of Adiantum capillus-veneris Linn. which indicated its hypoglycemic activity. The presence of flavonoids in the leaf might be the possible source of the said activity. This study intends to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of flavonoids present in Alambrillo fern on Alloxan-induced Webster white mice. Twenty-five hyperglycemic mice were divided into five (5) groups equally. The groups received the following treatments: group I received water and served as the negative control, group II was administered with flavonoid extract (100mg/kg), group III (150mg/kg), group IV (200mg/kg), and group V metformin (200mg/kg). The fasting blood glucose level was determined at 0, 1st, 5th, and 7th hour after treatment and the data were subjected to statistical analysis using ANOVA.The results showed that there was a significant change in the mean fasting blood glucose levels of the mice after the treatments, reaching its maximum effect at the 5th hour. There was no significant difference in the hypoglycemic activity of the group who received 200mg/kg metformin and those who received 200mg/kg flavonoid extract. Therefore, flavonoids present in the leaves of Adiantum capillus-veneris Linn. have hypoglycemic effect on the Alloxan-induced Webster white mice. Keywords: Adiantum capillus-veneris Linn., Alambrillo, Alloxan monohydrate, Metformin hydrochloride, blood glucose level

  • Knowledge and Perception on the Benefits of Safe Sex Among College
           Students in a State University

    • Authors: Reya T. Seno
Abstract: Safe sex is a topic of interest among researchers worldwide. In the Philippine setting, safe sex is not openly discussed. Such topics may come up only after a problem arises. Although most adolescents are not sexually active, knowledge on the benefits of safe sex is an important weapon to safeguard their health and future. Despite the studies conducted, it is alarming that there is a notable increase of unplanned pregnancies of women age 15-19 years old in the past years (WHO, 2014). Hence, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and perception on the benefits of safe sex among students aged 16-18 years old and identify the relationships among the demographic profile and their knowledge and their perception on the benefits of safe sex. This study revealed that the age of the respondents has some significant effect on their knowledge on the benefits of safe sex. Furthermore, respondents who own a computer with internet and respondents whose source of information on safe sex are educators have a significant effect on their perception of the benefits of safe sex. Finally, the study confirmed that there is a significant relationship between the knowledge and the perception on the benefits of safe sex.
