  • The Role of Shoe and Sock Sanitization in the Management of Superficial
           Fungal Infections of the Feet.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Gupta AK, Versteeg SG Because of the ubiquitous nature of dermatophytes and a lack of an adaptive immune response in the nail plate, recurrence and relapse rates associated with superficial fungal infections are high (10%-53%). Cured or improved dermatophytosis patients could become reinfected if exposed to fungal reservoirs, such as an infected shoe, sock, or textile. To prevent this, footwear, sock, and textile sanitization methods can be used. To provide insight into effective sanitization options, the focus of this article is to review footwear, sock, and textile sanitization studies conducted throughout history (1920-2016). Thirty-three studies are covered in this review, encompassing techniques ranging from formaldehyde fumigation and foot powder application...

  • Paronychia with Sporangium Formation Causing an Ingrown Toenail A Rare
           Case Report.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Wang CY, Hong CC, Su TF, Chang SC Ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, is a common inflammatory disease of the hallux. It results from the alteration of fit of the nail plate in the lateral nail fold. They are usually seen in adolescents and young adults and can affect daily activities and social life. Generally, ingrown toenails are classified into three stages, including inflammatory stage, abscess stage and granulation stage. Here we have presented the rare case of a male with a diagnosis of paronychia with sporangium formation causing an ingrown toenail. • An explorative study on the efficacy and feasibility of the use of
motivational interviewing to improve footwear adherence in persons with
diabetes at high-risk of foot ulceration.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: Footwear adherence at home increases one week after motivational interviewing to clinically relevant but not statistically significant levels (i.e. 80%), but then returns over time to baseline levels. Away from home, adherence is already sufficient at baseline and remains like that over time. The use of motivational interviewing seems feasible for the given purpose and patient group. These findings provide input to larger trials and provisionally suggest that additional or adjunctive therapy may be needed to better preserve adherence. • Foot Problems in Older Adults: Associations with Incident Falls, Frailty
Syndrome and Sensor-Derived Gait, Balance, and Physical Activity Measures.

    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: Foot problems were associated with frailty level and decreased motor performance and PA. Wearable technology is a practical way to screen for deterioration in gait, balance, and PA that may be associated with foot problems. Routine assessment and management of foot problems could promote earlier intervention to retain motor performance and manage fear of falling among older adults, which may ultimately improve healthy aging and reduce risk of frailty. • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Chandra V, Glebova N, Salvo NL, Wu T This practice memo, a collaborative effort between the Young Physicians' Program of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and the Young Surgeons Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), is intended to aid podiatrists and vascular surgeons in the early years of their respective careers, especially those involved in the care of patients with chronic wounds. During these formative years, learning how to successfully establish an inter-professional partnership is crucial in order to provide the best possible care to this important patient population. • An Imaged-Based Three-Dimensional Study of First Metatarsal Protrusion
Distance in Women With and Without Hallux Valgus.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: The reconstructed image datasets captured the 3D spatial relationship of the anatomy. Measurements of MPD were reliable. The first ray measured 2 mm shorter than the second ray in both the hallux valgus and control groups. Though unexpected, this result may prompt future study of the pathokinematics associated with hallux valgus that include the quantification of metatarsal protrusion with 3D methods, instead of relying solely on single plane radiograph reports. • Physical and mechanical therapies for lower limb problems in juvenile
idiopathic arthritis: a systematic review with meta- analysis.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: Conclusions: There is a paucity of research evaluating physical and mechanical therapies for lower limb problems in JIA. No physical therapy has been evaluated in RCT and mechanical therapy evaluation is limited to foot orthoses and shoe inserts for foot and ankle pain. The existing research is hampered by small sample sizes. Until further research is conducted, the effectiveness of mechanical and physical therapies for lower limb problems in JIA remains unclear. Abstract: CONCLUSION: The dynamic and static foot measurements are reliable for the medial longitudinal foot arch assessment in children. The variation of static arch measurements during the day has to be kept in mind. For clinical purposes, static and dynamic arch data should be interpreted separately. • Case Study: Solitary benign schwannoma of the foot presenting clinically
           as a ganglion cyst.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Ly P An unusual case of solitary benign schwannoma of the foot is presented. Clinical exam, MRI, and intra operative findings all confirm suspicion of a ganglion cyst. After attempt aspiration failed to produce any aspirate, excisional biopsy was performed. Pathology report confirms schwannoma with H&E stain, and subsequently reaffirmed with positive S-100 protein stain. Even though schwannoma of the foot had been reported in literature, this was an unusual case as the lesion was presented as a superficial, ganglion cyst like lesion on the bottom of the foot. • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Ali S, Griffin NL, Ellis W, Meyr AJ It is important to have a full appreciation of lower-extremity anatomical relationships before undertaking diabetic foot surgery. We sought to evaluate the potential for communication of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon with other pedal tendons and plantar foot compartments at the master knot of Henry and to provide cadaveric images and computed tomographic (CT) scans of such communications. Computed tomography and subsequent anatomical dissection were performed on embalmed cadaveric limbs. Initially, 5 to 10 mL (1:4 dilution) of iohexol and normal saline was injected into the FHL sheath as it coursed between the two hallux sesamoids. Subsequently, CT scans were obtained in the axial plane using a multidetector CT scanner...

  • Symptomatic Os VesalianumA Case Report and Review of the Literature.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: We report a case of a 19-year-old girl with chronic weightbearing pain proximal to the base of the fifth metatarsal of her left foot. She first experienced exacerbated pain on increased loading when she started professional training as a shop assistant. Because several months of nonsurgical therapy failed, the decision was made to surgically excise the accessory bone from the peroneus brevis tendon via a longitudinal incision and a simple tendon-to-tendon reconstruction. Postoperative treatment consisted of using a walker to avoid weightbearing for 6 weeks, followed by a gradual return to full weightbearing as tolerated. At final follow-up, the patient was fully asymptomatic and was able to return to work. Citing this case, this article discusses differential diagnoses and treatment option...

  • Treatment Algorithm for Chronic Achilles Tendon LesionsReview of the
Literature and Proposal of a New Classification.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Buda R, Castagnini F, Pagliazzi G, Giannini S Chronic Achilles tendon lesions (CATLs) ensue from a neglected acute rupture or a degenerated tendon. Surgical treatment is usually required. The current English literature (PubMed) about CATLs was revised, and particular emphasis was given to articles depicting CATL classification. The available treatment algorithms are based on defect size. We propose the inclusion of other parameters, such as tendon degeneration, etiology, and time from injury to surgery. Partial lesions affecting less than (I stage) or more than (II stage) half of the tendon should be treated conservatively for healthy tendons, within 12 weeks of injury. In II stage complex cases, an end-to-end anastomosis is required. Complete lesions inferior to ...

  • A Case Report of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Diagnosed in a
           Podiatric Medical Patient.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
      Abstract:
Authors : Amin K, Mckay D Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), which is also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is a group of related disorders characterized by the development of arteriovenous malformations. These malformations occur in almost all organs but predominantly in the skin, intestines, liver, lungs, and brain. This is a case report of a patient with cutaneous manifestations of HHT in the lower extremities as diagnosed by his podiatric physician. To our knowledge, the literature does not present any case reports in which cutaneous manifestations of the lower extremities followed by a further work-up allowed a diagnosis of HHT.            Measure Leg-Length Discrepancy.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: This new method (the DMG) is useful for diagnosing leg-length discrepancy and is related to the ASIS-external malleolus measurement. The DIMG is significantly inversely proportional to the degree of pronation according to the FPI. Conversely, determination of leg-length discrepancy with a tape measure from the ASIS to the malleoli cannot be performed interchangeably at the level of the internal or external malleolus.            Phalanx of the Foot Causing Complex Regional Pain SyndromeA Case Report.
    • Authors: Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association
Abstract: We report an unusual case of adenocarcinoma of the lung metastasizing to the proximal phalanx of the third digit in a 56-year-old woman with overlying complex regional pain syndrome. The patient was initially treated for neuroma, fracture, and neuropathic pain with no improvement over a 4-month period before presenting to the emergency department for left third digit pain. Radiographic imaging showed substantial osteopenia and mottling; magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an aggressive lesion to the proximal phalanx. The patient underwent excision of the lesion, revealing metastatic moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma.
